Book Description
What will the office look like in the future? How will it operate? These were the questions posed by the Architectural Association's Design Research Lab three years ago. Corporate Fields is the response: a series of projects that propose new kinds of highly collaborative and responsive working environments evolved from an experimental use of technology.
In look and feel, Corporate Fields resembles a software manual. It is a piece of design information, offering step-by-step rigorous explanations of the projects through every stage from initial analysis to completed design. The sharing of information is one of the trademarks of D[R]L, a new kind of graduate program that seeks to reinvent post-professional design education by capitalizing on new design networks and today's interconnected design systems. The visual presentation of the work is rounded off by a discussion of its practical and pedagogical implications in essays by Brett Steele, Mohsen Mostafavi, Christopher Hight, Patrik Schumacher, Tom Verebes, Mark Cousins, and Andrew Benjamin.

Book Description
Most of us know him as one member of the band Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, but what you may not know is that at the same time Graham Nash was rocking the world, he was also pursuing a parallel career in photography and digital imaging. Nash Editions—the world’s premier fine-art digital printmaking studio, which Graham co-founded with R. Mac Holbert—represents the pinnacle of those efforts. This book uses thought-provoking essays and glorious artwork to sum up not only Nash Editions’ achievements but also the state of fine-art digital printmaking. After a brief history of printmaking, you’ll reach the heart of the book: an essay by Holbert on the genesis of Nash Editions and fine-art digital printing (which details the studio's interactions with major artists like David Hockney); an essay by MoMA consultant Henry Wilhelm (which includes a technical comparison of traditionally and digitally prepared prints); and commentary from Nash Editions artists. The book’s more than 100 illustrations include Nash Editions artwork, photos of artists in the studio, images of the machines used in digital printing, and illustrations of the proofing process.

Inspiration Through Examples and History .......2007-06-16
With respect to the nature of this book's content and message Eric Burrows' review title hit the nail on the bean: "Not how to do it but how it happened". Don't buy this book with the expectation of learning technical tricks for printing. Rather, "Nash Editions; Photography and the Art of Digital Printing" is a retrospective look at the pathfinding inkjet printing work of Mac Holbert and Graham Nash. The book actually consists of several essays by various authors, including Mr. Archival Permanence himself, Henry Wilhelm.
I found this book to be a fascinating stroll down the relatively short (to-date) path of fine art inkjet printing. But I also found it strangely inspiring. After spending a couple of hours with this book I felt compelled to devote even more effort to my own printing.
A must have book, but ..........2007-06-14
Nash Editions deserves all credit for kick starting the fine-art/inkjet revolution but I'm not sure this book adds much to what is already well known. For sure there's lot of great images herein, but the presentation is a bit sloppy. We hear the same story over again from multiple participants and (in my copy at least) the more interesting narration from Holbert ends mid sentence. If you're interested in the history of the inkjet, this is a book you'll have to have but the lack of care/thought in its presentation does seem a little like exploitation.
High expectations.......2007-05-06
Just a few years ago the terms "art" and "inkjet print" weren't tolerated in communal context. Now, as with many media evolutions, sensibilities have to a large degree changed. One of the forces instrumental in altering the art community's entrenched mindset against the inkjet process has been a small digital fine-art inkjet photography studio by the name of Nash Editions. Through the collaborative pioneering of a handful of deep-pocketed, influential, and very determined artistic entrepreneurs, Nash Editions helped develop, refine, and establish broad acceptance for the digital fine-art inkjet printing. This is their story.
At first blush this lavishly printed (and expensive) book promises a consuming elegance that sweeps you away. It has star power too, with one of the leading personalities none other than Graham Nash of Crosby, Still & Nash fame. It also includes rich and very personal histories of the birth and labored growth of the digital printing service company, of permanence in various photographic media, and of photography itself as a medium of expression. The book also includes images by a broad selection of visual artists spread throughout in an eclectic smorgasbord.
But there are a few elements that detract somewhat from the book's rich objectives. With several authors contributing, certain parts of the story get repeated - several times in fact - and the tone at times begins to sound slightly obsequious and self-lauding, to the point that one is led to the impression that Nash Editions (the company) was pretty much the sole entity that dragged digital printing from practically nothing in the early 1990s to it's high level of sophistication and acceptance today. While Nash Editions can certainly claim historic "firsts" in several categories within the digital printing revolution, a thoughtful person might wonder if there weren't just a few other significant contemporaries working toward the same goals. And on a purely technical note, one of the sections of the book ends in the middle of a paragraph, leaving the reader guessing as to the intended conclusion; perhaps a little tighter editing would have been helpful.
So, should you buy this book? Yes, if you're a photographic artist interested in the history of the digital printing process or the concept and science of photographic media permanence. And of course it will serve too as visual stimulation and a contemporary two-dimensional artwork study; one can learn a great deal by looking carefully at other artist's work.
Not how to do it but how it happened.......2007-03-31
Although I knew roughly of Graham Nash's involvement in the early days of digital printing I did not know the detail. Having been fooling around with digital printing about as long as Nash, but without his money or expertise, I found the book fascinating. This book will not tell you how to get the best print, but it does tell the story of the people who had the vision and knowledge to start it all off. A good read with some good essays by photographers who were involved. I think that it is a worthwhile addition to my photographic library. An eye opener to those who just push the button and a good print comes out.
A beautiful work..........2007-01-15
Most of the time when you view photography, you think about the image and composition, not the process of how the image is put on paper. In Nash Editions: Photography and the Art of Digital Printing by Nash Editions, you'll think more about the printing process than usual. And there's some really stunning photography, to boot!

Index
This book consists of four essays centered around the process of image creation on paper. Nash Editions focuses on the creation of high-end digital image printing, and as such has learned a lot about the process and history of how photos are transferred to paper. From the chemical-heavy techniques of the early days of photography to the digital printing processes of today, you'll gain insights into issues such as color fidelity and permanence. I now know why all those pictures of the sixties faded out so badly... The more visually stunning part of the book consists of the large number of images throughout the book. From black-and-white landscapes to portraits to abstract compilations, each page turn gives the reader another treat to ponder and enjoy. Very beautiful compositions... If this were a hardbound book, it'd be a classic "coffee-table" book. As a paperback, it doesn't have quite the same outward impact as other books similar to this. But it definitely holds its own in terms of content.
This is a book that any serious photographer would enjoy owning...

Gary Dorsey's Silicon Sky tells the engrossing tale of a private company's quest to develop the world's first low-earth-orbit commercial satellite--a momentous accomplishment that paved the way for everything from reasonably priced GPS navigational receivers to pay-at-the-pump credit-card terminals at filling stations. Dorsey tackles the true story of the emerging world of "microspace" in a manner reminiscent of Tracy Kidder's pioneering The Soul of a New Machine, using an interesting combination of first-hand observations, critical analysis, and literary techniques usually found in novels. By sticking close to Orbital Sciences Corporation's extensive cast of characters working in the early design stages in 1992 through the product launch in 1995, Dorsey brings readers into the labs and boardrooms as the fledgling operation grows into a booming company that entered 1998 with $3.9 billion in orders already in its books. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
A classic American tale of ingenuity and hard work, guts and glory
For more than a decade some of the world's most powerful defense companies have raced to launch the first low-earth-orbit commercial satellites. The prize? An explosive global market for personal communications worth billions of dollars. Fresh out of Harvard Business School, David Thompson entered the fray with an insane idea: to build his own rockets, satellites, and a multi-million-dollar corporation that could go head to head against the big guys. The story of his electrifying grab for the heavens-huge start-up costs, mind-blowing technical obstacles, and dark tangos with investors-is told by acclaimed writer Gary Dorsey, who was there reporting from inside. Silicon Sky reads like fast-paced fiction, and traces the advent not just of a single company but of a quickly emerging technological industry.
Silicon Sky: How One Small Start-Up Went Over the Top to Beat the Big Boys won the 1999 award for Distinguished Literary Contribution" from IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.).
Customer Reviews:
Captured Well.......2000-01-29
As someone who worked at the 'old' OSC during the time that this book covers, I knew a lot of the characters portrayed here and am acquainted with the Orbcomm story. It's not only accurate but it also tells a lot more about the engineering team and the management of the project than most people in the company knew at the time. Some people fault the book for only covering the time period to the '95 launch, but for the three critical years of the start-up's story, he captures every significant facet. I'm sure some engineers might not be happy with how they're portrayed, but this is not a technical book. As a story about entrepreneurial guts and the essence of engineering it's one of the best. The recent award from IEEE was highly deserved.
Beyond Nerd Chic ..........1999-10-02
One of the most inspiring business books of the past year tells how a little company full of big ideas, Virginia-based Orbital Sciences Corp., got into the business of putting commercial satellites into space. In Silicon Sky: How One Small Start-Up Went Over the Top to Beat the Big Boys into Satellite Heaven, author Gary Dorsey chronicles the progress of a pipe dream as it has evolved into a company with 1998 revenues of $734 million. Orbital founder David Thompson gave Dorsey unfettered access to the company's inner workings -- from the beginning of its efforts to design a commercially viable communications satellite in 1992 through the first launch in 1995. The author clearly identifies with Thompson's entrepreneurial ardor, contrasting Orbital's culture of discovery with the 'feudal,' unimaginative culture of old-line aerospace companies addicted to government contracts. What Dorsey lacks in objectivity, he makes up for in clarity. From his fly-on-the-wall perch, sitting in on company meetings and peering over the shoulders of workers in the lab, he has observed and distilled into concise prose the details that made Orbital's success possible. Dorsey explains the technology behind the business so fluidly that it hardly seems like rocket science. BOOKPAGE, June 1990 REVIEW BY E. THOMAS WOOD
The incomplete and microscopic look at Orbital.......1999-08-09
Having worked at Orbital during the period this book covers, I was shocked at the inconsistency throughout this book. The author writes as an authority on Orbital, but in reality, he has had a very small slice of insight into what went on during that time. Critical events affecting the company as a whole which almost everyone at the company would know about did not show up in this book. For instance, two highly publicized failures of the Pegasus Rocket which occurred prior to the flight of Orbcomm were not even discussed. These failures definitely had some impact to the Orbcomm project. When you talk about Orbital, you talk about an end to end space company. That includes building the satellite, launching it, and providing the infrastructure to control it. The attempt was made at getting this across, but it really did not do justice to that topic. The book should be described as the incomplete history of the design of a satellite, not a history of Orbital. I do have to say that management personalites were described rather accurately. The engineers in the story are really depicted as an inexperienced bunch of kids who came right out of school with their "license to learn" (degree) and were directed to design a satellite system with nothing but their egos. Quite a bit of the book describes the long hours they worked and the stress involved in getting it done. This wasn't a superhuman abnormality in the engineering world at Orbital, as the author would lead you to believe. He could have told us about it in maybe 3 sentences, not 300+ pages. With that out of the way, the author could have brought this history of Orbcomm into recent history, instead of stopping before the constellation was launched. In summary, I have to say this book was a big disappointment. It doesn't do justice to Orbital or provide a consistent picture of the Orbcomm constellation development.
Disjointed, poorly written, and disappointing........1999-08-06
I agree completely with the reader from Monument, CO. This book was very disjointed and poorly written. The only favorable reviews I see on this page are from people involved in the satellite business. One five star rating comes from a guy who has not read the book! This book pales in comparison to one of my favorites, "The Soul of a New Machine", by Tracy Kidder. The characters in Silicon Sky are sketchy and at times superficial. For example, all we really learn about Grace is that she sings pop songs while walking and loves to get in the face of the contract manufacturers - even though she was apparently an engineer of some importance. Dorsey also does a rather poor job at documenting how various technical obstacles are overcome. How exactly was the "last great obstacle", the problem with the satellite's batteries overcome? We'll never know. The last thing Dorsey talks about is some experiments with some mysterious shielding material. Did the material work? Or did the engineers have to come up with something else? Instead we are treated to coverage of engineers howling when they found out their board does not work because the MCU is placed wrong. I've designed boards for embedded systems for years. The only time I've had an error of this nature I found I had mislabled the board's silkscreen. Takes a tech about three minutes to fix with a hot-air rework station. Sorry, I really wanted to like this book. But it appears that Dorsey does not have enough technical expertise to determine the relative importance of projects and engineers to really make this an informative and entertaining book.
Accurate portrayal of people and technology.......1999-06-08
It is almost invariable that stories that I have personal knowledge of are conveyed with glaring errors and omissions. I am happy to say that Gary Dorsey's book is a notable exception.
I joined Orbital in 1996 and worked on the subsequent Orbcomm constellation, which started after the completion of the book. Of the principals who worked on the original Orbcomm and stayed for the constellation development, Mr. Dorsey captures the character of each with incredible precision. Mr. Dorsey also gets the technical details right. He has a real knack for picking up how engineers talk to each other and how technical problems penetrate their equilibrium.
My only issue with the book is that it's episodic in nature and fails to follow specific technical problems and their human actors to resolution.

A focus on the fringes for big-time problems.......2002-07-25
This book is another in a spate of books produced by labor academics, activists, and officials, mostly spurred by changes at the top of the AFL-CIO in 1995, that attempts to deal with the precarious state of labor unions or the labor movement as they are inclined to say. It is the ability of transnational corporations (TNCs) to avoid labor unions by diversifying globally, especially in terms of production, and the changing ethnic composition of work forces in such locations as Miami and Los Angeles to which labor unions must adjust for their very survival according to these authors.
With the passage of NAFTA the pace of jobs being shifted to Mexico has accelerated. Transnationals, mostly in the automotive, textile/clothing, and electronic/electrical industries, have now established nearly 4000 factories in the maquiladora zone in Mexico with wages at about one tenth those in the U.S. Increasingly, labor unions in the U.S. have realized that global focus and actions are essential in dealing with global firms. The essays suggest and detail all sorts of cross-border alliances and contacts at both federation and union levels, as well as worker-to-worker interfacing, designed to pressure and support organizing efforts. Many readers would be familiar with the unfavorable publicity campaigns that some U.S. retailers have been subjected to as a result of cross-border collaboration. Another strategy described is the cross-border pressure that local unions of one transnational employer can apply in assisting one another.
It is fairly clear from the essays that organizing successes as a result of cross-border initiatives are few and fleeting. Though the problem is not totally ignored by the authors, widespread solidarity among workers with different languages and cultures and separated geographically is more of a pipedream than a real possibility. None of the essays even attempts to quantify overall levels of cross-border labor alliances and their impact. The authors do note that appeals to the labor laws of Mexico and the bureaucratic nightmare that describes the labor side agreements of NAFTA are of limited utility. It seems pretty evident that the taming of the forces of globalization will require far more than cross-border alliances between labor, or labor-like, organizations.
Two essays demonstrate that the family and community orientations of urban-based immigrants, if properly drawn upon, can be powerful forces in organizing unions, especially in lower-end service work. The essays show that flexible and progressive leadership that is sustained is key to immigrant organizing. But such an adjustment for craft-based unions, or any union that focuses mostly on contract administration, seems to be quite difficult despite any obvious decrease in members or loss of market power. The history of exclusion and privilege for a select group of workers is hard to overcome.
A recurrent theme in the essays is the necessity for the labor movement to become "social movement unionism (SMU)." It is a most nebulous concept, but one notion of SMU seems to require labor unions to become a part of community activities and concerns. One author claims that neo-liberal restructuring (NLR), which maquiladora zones are a part of, leads to SMU in contrast to business unionism. SMU advocates seem to be unwilling to squarely confront the fact of the scattering of specific workforces across vast metropolitan areas, a fact hardly conducive to SMU.
Along the same line of thought, but perhaps more interesting, is the notion that unionism should draw upon the themes of citizenship, which in a democracy implies participation. The author does not seem to know where to go with his concept, however, with a proposal that central labor federations provide coordination. Citizenship opens the door for much more. For example, those on the left in the labor movement eschew worker participation in managing corporations. But, it could be contended that any concept of participation in a democracy that does not provide for worker input into decisions that affect his economic destiny is pretty weak stuff. Surprisingly, the author does not touch upon the German legal mandate for works council and supervisory board participation.
This is not a big idea book. Cross-border initiatives are on the fringe as far as union participation or any significant yields for the labor movement. Organizing immigrants when and where possible is a no-brainer. The notion of citizenship for workers starts to get the picture right. It is fundamentally a political concept. It will be through substantial political power that workers' "voices" in workplaces will be guaranteed, union or no union. Furthermore, trade policy can begin to disallow imports built on the backs of those who have had to sacrifice their economic and physical health. The concept of "free trade" will be forced to take into account the real costs. But that is another book. The essays in the book are informative and useful, but for the most part the authors are tiptoeing around the fringes of large problems for the working class in the U.S. and their neighbors.

Customer Reviews:
Highly recommended for newly diagnosed diabetics (like myself).......2007-04-05
This is the first book about diabetes that I read, after being diagnosed with the condition myself. It was a useful, tough-love experience. The authors discussed all of my excuses for not doing the right thing by my pancreas, and talked to me gently but firmly about monitoring my glucose levels, exercise, and nutritional therapy. A long chapter is devoted to the link between depression and diabetes, and the emotions that a patient plays through when first diagnosed. I didn't even think about the psychological effects when my various friends were diagnosed with the disease--one of them has had diabetes for over 20 years and is now giving herself insulin shots.
Sorry, Jan, CJ, Dennis, and Cathy. I had to learn the hard way about dealing with the psychological aspects of a diagnosis of diabetes. This book helped me through the various stages--I didn't stay in denial very long (evidently some diabetics pass away before admitting that they have the disease and need to treat it), but the authors did talk me out of blaming my grandmother (deceased these twenty years) for `bringing' diabetes into the family.
Incidentally, the chapter on "The Genetics of Diabetes" is fascinating. Type II diabetes (the kind you usually get when you're old and fat) is actually "much more strongly determined by genetics than is Type I." (Thanks, Grandma).
This guide was first published in 1997, before the glucose level for diagnosing diabetes was dropped from 125 mg/dl to 100 mg/dl, but the authors were already using 115 mg/dl as the criterion in their own practices. They hint that a new diagnostic specification is coming, then get on with the book. Both Type I and Type II diabetes are fully examined, along with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (which has a whole chapter to itself).
The causes of diabetes, its symptoms, and the goals of treatment are explained in very clear language--you might not like what you're reading (diabetes is for life), but you'll be able to understand it. If the book makes you too cranky, be sure to check out the part about what happened to diabetics before insulin was discovered and extracted from pancreatic beta cells. The hardest chapters for me to read were the ones on diabetic complications, e.g. "Diabetic Eye Disease," and "Hardening of the Arteries."
The information on "Living with Diabetes," "Families Who Live with Diabetes," and those dealing with health care professionals, the U.S. Health Care System (or lack of one), and "Employment and Diabetes" will probably prove to be the most useful in the long run, but I recommend reading the whole book. If nothing else, I came out of it with a whole new (and much improved) attitude about monitoring my glucose level.
Facing Your Fears.......2004-01-02
_Fear is sometimes a positive force. In moderation, it can motivate people. Realistic fear of complications can strengthen your resolve to take the best possible care of yourself...The key to making your fears work for you..is to keep reminding yourself of the positive. The power to control blood sugars...improves everyday_. (p217)
Two months ago, I was diagnosed with diabetes. Since then, THE JOHNS HOPKINS GUIDE TO DIABETES has been my handbook and I feel fortunate that Christopher D. Saudek, M.D. and his staff have developed such a valuable tool. It is extremely easy to use, yet covers completely the topics associated with successful living with diabetes.
The Preface states, _This book grew out of our experiences in caring for people with diabetes, particularly at the self-managment program of the Johns Hopkins Diabetes Center. Much that we discuss in this book is drawn from the material used in our teaching sessions -- and indeed, from the material taught by diabetes educators throughout the country_.
I appreciate the self-management program promoted in this text. _A central theme of this book is that [I] can live a long and healthy life with diabetes, but it is a dangerous disease to ignore_. (p4) I learned that the diagnosis of diabetes is objective and ammoral, based solely on the level of glucose in the blood. Knowing that it really does not matter how my blood glucose levels got to be the way they were helped me to accept that something needed to be done to control them. I was able to adjust to daily life with diabetes, learning that I can in fact cope with it.
Understanding Diabetes is the first part of this book and the first part of successfully controlling this disease. The bulk of this book is in the next part, Controlling Diabetes. Their approach to goal setting is representative of this book's healthy attitude:
_We are talking about redefining the quality of life. We admit to looking through rose-colored glasses, downplaying the things you can't do or eat that you used to love. There's no denying that some things ought to be avoided some of life's patterns ought to be adjusted. But none of this has to impair your quality of life. You have the choice. You define quality. You set the goals._ (p36)
If you are interested in controlling your blood glucose levels, this text can show you how.
There is a strong spiritual component that comes into play when changing behaviors. The task of accepting the realities of diabetes; turning from destructive behaviours and turning to life-affirming behaviours is at the crux of repentance. Moving from denial to acceptance requires an element of faith. Faith in the diagnosis, faith in the cure, and faith in ourselves that we are able to take up the task day after day with a fresh re-commitment. My experience with diabetes has strenghtened my own spiritual confidence. The hard won changes to my glucose levels has given me confidence that I will be able to control other parts of my life.
PEACE
Important information - helpfully organized.......2002-05-21
If diabetes has entered your life because of your own health or the health of a loved one you need to get a lot of information in order to control the disease as best as you can. This book is a GREAT place to start.
The book provides a good overview of what diabetes really is and why it is so destructive. But MUCH MORE important is the help it gives us in understanding how the disease impacts the way one lives. If the diabetes is responded to constructively the situation can be improved. Depending on the severity of the condition it can be improved a little bit to, in a mild case, something like normality. Most are somewhere in the middle.
The danger is to ignore the condition. This book can help make clear all the good things that can come from responding positively to the condition and gives helpful information on how to do that. And you can find specific information very quickly because the book is so thoughtfully organized.
All eye disorders and health issues are covered here.......2001-11-11
An excellent basic reference and a recommended pick for both public and school libraries, the large print edition of Dr. Christopher Saudek, et.al.'s Guide To Diabetes assures that audiences who need it will be able to read it. From handling psychological problems to dealing with daily maintenance routines, this is packed with practical information. The large print edition of Dr. Cassel's will reach a wide audience and will prove a listing contribution to libraries. All eye disorders and health issues are covered here, with treatment options and symptoms thoroughly surveyed in an easy-to-understand manner. Highly recommended.
A wonderful reference for everyone with diabetes.......2000-03-29
I can not say enough about how wonderful this book is. As an individual recently diagnosed with this chronic illness I found this book to be an invaluable resource of very factual and practical information for anyone who is looking for a comprehensive guide to understanding their illness. It is presented in a very easy-to-understand format. The authors provide detailed information about practical solutions in which to understand and deal with the many issues surrounding living with a diagnosis of diabetes. I also found the psychological emphasis of the book very refreshing and helpful. Out of all of the self-help guides available for diabetes this is the one book no diabetic should be without. Full of timely and up-to-date reliable information. It is the best guide you can spend your money on.

Book Description
Despite Wellington's success against Marmont's army at Salamanca in July, the year of 1812 ended in bitter disappointment for the British. However, a year later Wellington's series of brilliant manoeuvres threw the French onto the defensive on all fronts, culminating in the final victory at Vittoria: 90,000 men and 90 guns attacking in four mutually supporting columns. The French centre gave way and both flanks were turned, their army finally breaking in flight towards Pamplona. Any French hopes of maintaining their position in the Peninsular were crushed forever. On 7 October the British set foot on the 'sacred soil' of' Napoleon's France.

The African Wild Dog: Behavior, Ecology, and Conservation (Monographs in Behavior and Ecology)
ASIN: 1560987170 |
Amazon.com
For millennia, Lycaon pictus, the wild dog, roamed the savannas of sub-Saharan Africa. A highly social scavenger, much like the wolf of the Northern Hemisphere, the wild dog served an essential function in the grasslands ecosystem, culling sick and injured ungulates from once-vast herds. With the advent of large-scale farming and livestock production, however, the wild dog was seen as a threat to progress and was hunted out. Only some 5,000 individuals survive today, making Lycaon pictus Africa's most endangered carnivore. This heavily illustrated look at the life of the wild dog makes a well-reasoned argument for its preservation.

Wonderful, Wonderful, Wonderful.......2001-12-31
A terrific book for all types of nature-loving readers. If you like pictures, they're here. If you want the best information available about African Wild Dogs and efforts to save them, it's definitely here. All people who are fascinated by wild animals will find this book to be a treasure. The photography is beautiful...It's the next best thing to being there. Leave this book on your coffee table and I guarantee that every guest will pick it up.
These animals truly are in trouble. McNutt does a good job explaining exactly why these dogs are endangered (or should be classified as such).
Like most books published under Smithsonian, this one is a keeper.
This is a great book!!.......1999-05-02
Hi, I'm an OAC biology student (that's grade 13 in Ontario) who is doing my ISP on African wild dogs. This is the best book I have ever found on wild dogs and probably the best ever written. I could not believe my luck when I found it. It is an excellent, coffee-table-type book with lots of beautiful pictures that you would like even if you were not specially interested in wild dogs. You will be surprised at how similar the dogs look in the pictures to your own dog.
A fascinating look at the ecology of the African wild dog.......1998-10-30
Are you fascinated by wolves? Do you dream of going on safari in Africa? If you answer yes to either question then this book will be of interest to you.
I had the good luck to see a pack of 10 wild dogs while on safari in Botswana in September of 1998. Being a wolf enthusiast, I was very interested in the similarities and differences between the American grey wolf and the African wild dog. This book was in the library of each safari camp I stayed in so I had the pleasure of studying about the wild dogs while in their native habitat. As you'll learn from this book, wild dogs are extremely social, even more so than grey wolves, and very efficient, successful predators.
The photographs in this book are fantastic and the text is well written, well organized, and aimed at the general public rather than the scientific community.
The author continues his African wild dog research in Botswana. The fate of these fascinating predators is very precarious due to their small population and the relentless persecution by people, similar to that experienced by the grey wolf in America earlier this century.
A well-researched, fascinating look at the African wild dog.......1998-03-29
This is an excellent treatment of the ecology, behavior and endangered status of the African wild dog (Lycaon pictus). For the past several years, the authors have studied African wild dogs in one of their last remaining strongholds, the Okavango Delta in Botswana.
The well-written text and superb photography provide important insight into the natural history and the current plight of African wild dogs. This species has been maligned and persecuted by humans, partly because of unfortunate myths about them. The authors address and dispel these myths, they examine the causes of the drastic decline in African wild dog numbers, and they discuss possible approaches to save this endangered species.

Birds of Botswana.......2000-04-12
For a birder traveling to Botswana, there are two books that should be considered -- this one and Birds of Southern Africa by the same author. The larger book is similar to the Peterson or Audobon guides familier to US birders, with large drawings of species, text descriptions and maps. However, it is large, including a thousand or so species. And complex. Many types of birds in Africa have no counterpart in the US. Thus, finding a species in the larger book can be difficult until you become extremely familier with its basic layout and structure. Enter the Birds of Botswana. It is small -- only 80 pages, covering 250 birds. It is lightweight. Most common birds are much easier to find. It has fairly complete text; in many cases nearly identical to the text in the larger book. Its downside is that its pictures are quite small, it has no maps, and it is limited to the most commonly identified species. Due to the lack of maps, it is impossible to say how useful this book would be in neighboring countries. Frankly, we're taking both on our trip this summer. I expect that when we field test them, we will find that whoever has the smaller book in hand will identify the vast majority of birds first. On the other hand, I also won't be surprized if we have to turn to the larger book for some identifications. Summary: This is an excellent book for novice or beginning birders, and a good companion book for more experienced birders or for those who are not familier with African birds. Finally, if weight or size is you principle criteria, this one is small and would serve most needs.

An Incredible Experience.......2000-10-20
I ran into this book in my library. Since I love to read of books about individuals sharing their lives with wildlife, I eagerly checked Last of the Free out. I was not disappointed! Gareth truly came across as a very caring human being! His views on the "system" and his frustration at trying to accept the way people are is interesting. He seems to be taking over for the lions for George Adamson when he died by poachers/bandits!
What a difficult life he has chosen for himself but a very rewarding one. I love reading about the antics and learning experiences of animals and this time it was with lions! I am so envious of Gareth and so glad that he's doing all that he is. I have found his homepage and plan on keeping abreast of what he's doing. The poor lions and elephants need a voice and they have one! Thank God!

Patterson is a GODSEND!.......2000-07-29
Gareth Patterson is a saint! He is doing what needs to be done concerning the lions. Humanity is a cancer and that cancer is destroying everything in it's path. Buy this book and jump on the band wagon to save the lions!
ALSO: One of the major problems we face is misinformation. One example is Jennifer Henderson's review of Gareth's book "Last of the Free." The book does not begin with Batian's murder, but end's with it. And in the book, Furaha nor any of her cubs get executed! What is wrong with people? I really wish people would read these books prior to writing reviews!
One last thing: If you buy these books and enjoy them, please do your part to help the Tuli Lion Trust.
Here is an idea. If you live in the Tuli area, become a vegetarian! It is the meat industry and cattle ranching that is the bane of lions today. If we can put the meat industry out of business we can save the lions... and some nice cows as well!
truly amazing tales.......1999-03-11
This story reveals the coruption and selfishness of the human race and highlight the work and lives of The Adamsons, truly amazing people that fought so selflessly for Lions and the African Wildlife
