The Dark and Bizarre Underside of The Lone Star State.......2004-08-23

After this book and the work was published, Winogrand was no longer welcome in the state of Texas. Pick it up and you'll see why. It reveals a bunch of beady eyed bubbas and bubettes enjoying The Fort Worth Stock show, all presented as archetypes of the Texas myth. You'll cringe, you'll laugh, but the only way to do that is to buy this book.

This book, first published in 1973, takes up an important approach to capital which had gone out of fashion. It is being reissued in paperback in recognition of the recent renewed interest in this approach. The 'Austrian' theory of capital concentrates on the inputs and outputs in the productive process, and has an advantage over more modern theories of economic dynamics in that it is more naturally expressible in economic terms: the production process over time is taken as a whole, rather than disintegrated. However, this approach had been largely abandoned because it seemed to be unable to deal with fixed capital. Sir John overcomes this problem here by allowing for a sequence of outputs, and the consequences for dynamic economics are profound and novel.

The Meaning of Greatness.......2003-01-26

A while ago I reviewed Israel Kirzner's excellent introduction to von Mises published by ISI ("Ludwig von Mises"). That work focused mostly on Mises's economic thought. If you would like to get an appreciation of the full scope of Mises's thinking, including political philosophy and sociology, this is a good place to start.

"The Meaning of Ludwig von Mises" contains eleven essays, hitting on all the key areas of Mises's thought. David Gordon's essay "Ludwig von Mises and the Philosophy of History" is excellent. If the basis of your sociological thought is methodological individualism, then any attempt to come up with "laws of history" as taught by the likes of Spengler and Toynbee is futile. Dr. Gordon then shows that Marxism is equally vulnerable. Nonetheless, I think Dr. Gordon's analysis is too sweeping. He concedes that Spengler and Toynbee made "insights." In fact, Dr. Gordon ends this essay by praising von Mises's suggestion that nationalism is largely explainable by economic interventionism. Hence there seem to be certain "patterns" in history, even if one doesn't wish to call them laws.

The essay I found most enjoyable was Leland Yeager's discussion of utilitarianism. Von Mises - in spite of his Kantian epistemology - was an advocate of utilitarianism. Rothbard broke with his mentor in this area, making sweeping statements about what a utilitarian can and cannot logically believe. Prof Yeager takes issue with Rothbard's understanding of utilitarianism and the theory of rights derivable from it. In particular, he makes some good arguments against Rothbard's view that blackmail should be legal. For example, according to Rothbard, Mr. A is free to tell Mr. B that he will spread lies about B's business unless B pays A money. Rothbard's conception of rights was excessively limited to property and contracts to transfer title to property. (For what it's worth, I put some comments about Rothbard's theory of rights in my review of "The Ethics of Liberty".)

I have read many books on the Duke of Marlborough, and this is hands-down the best. Lengthy discussion of logistics, strategy, and tactics are boiled down to a manageable and lay-man-accessible size. Fair and balanced evaluation of costs of battles and judgement on the part of the commanders involved, this book is first-rate!

Listed in A-Z encyclopedia format, this book has thousands of entries that collectively define and describe Judaism, past and present. Well written, concise, balances maximizing its informative tone with staying readable. Not over the average person's head at all. A very good reference volume. Worth owning by anyone.

Under the editorial hand of Geoffrey Wigoder in Jerusalem it has been compiled with contributions from many hundreds of Jewish scholars from throughout the Jewish world. In a single, very portable volume, it covers everything from mysticism to contemporary Jewish authors, from cookery to historical figures. It is an enormous achievement and an invaluable aide to the researcher and the casual reader. The ample illustrations are an added bonus.

Parrot Finches.......2002-05-06

This book is far from complete, even when first written, was out of date then and, it goes without saying that it is still out of date today.

As this is the only book on this particular subject, it is considered as the 'bible' but it can be, and is, very misleading to the newcommer and gives the reader very little insight into keeping and breeding Parrot Finches.
