1 out of 5 stars Misleading title: NOT UP TO DATE.......2007-08-09

As one reviewer notes, this book is now in print 7 years, which makes it somewhat older than that given the time taken for preparation and publishing.

Some of the information is useful. But the cameras that were new way back then are not new now. Used film camera prices vary according to collectability, usability for those who choose to use film at least on occasion, and sometimes for no good reason. But there's no connection to anything that was true when this book was published.

Digital cameras are largely replacing film, like it or not. A book published about higher end digital cameras today would be largely out of date in 18 months and incomplete well before that.

The primary value of this book is that it's almost a historical short book on the value of cameras that one author considered worthwhile in 1999-2000. It gives you a picture of reasonable camera outfits. Otherwise, virtually useless.

              4 out of 5 stars book review.......2006-03-16

The book is well organized & easy to use but as it was printed in 2000, the values indicated for the nikon equip i wish to sell are, when researched via ebay & other sources useing AS SOLD values McBrooms values are 75-100% too high. In view of the new situation regarding the advent of the new DIGITAL acitivity McBroom is due for a new issue.

2 out of 5 stars Why does this book exist?.......2005-12-30

I really can't see the purpose of this book for either buyers or sellers. McBroom gives very little information about the cameras themselves, certainly not enough for anyone to make a decision about whether to buy a particular camera -- in many cases he gives only a price. Moreover, he restricts himself to only relatively common and recent cameras for which more accurate pricing information is readily available from eBay.

5 out of 5 stars McBroom Writes a Most Useable Book!.......2002-04-26

I bought my first McBroom Price Guide to Modern Cameras in 1991, and have added subsequent updates as they have become available.
He gives information about readily available equipment and accessories, with prices.
It is a valuable guide to everyone who enjoys buying and using cameras. If you are interested in older cameras that are still available, they also are described here. Armed with this book, you can shop for cameras with confidence.
              I recommend it highly!

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, useful, and recommended!.......2000-06-20

I have found this book to be very informative, helping me to appraise, buy and sell with confidence. I have noticed that some of the prices for rarer items are somewhat inflated in the book, as well as items in the book being priced to low compared to real-world (like eBay) prices, but, that is how the market is. Overall, if not for the prices, the specifics of each camera model covered are well worth the price!

This book is a must for the used equipment buyer. The equipment is critiqued by the author and the book well written and easy to understand. I buy and sell gear and use this book as a realistic price guide and for reference. There are many makes and models of cameras. When choosing a camera it is hard to determine what to buy and how much to pay. McBrooms Camera Bluebook helps you make an informed decision. I am anxiously awaiting the new edition.

4 out of 5 stars An antidote for neo-classical economic ideology.......2002-03-19

As is pointed out by Paul Ormerod [1] in ‚The Death of Economics', neo-clasical economic theory self-destructed in 1968 when Roy Radner proved that infinite computational capacity would be required of rational expectations agents in General Equilibrium Theory [2]. In spite of that the truck keeps running without wheels, gaining in influence in law schools and in US court cases. Why this is so, how a theory without data (and, in eonometrics, data without theory) can survive and even prosper is a historico-sociological question, no easier to answer than are analogous questions about the persistence beyond the middle ages of Aristotelian theory, or the emergence of the Taliban in our own time. However, as the following quote (on microfoundations) suggests, Professor Dosi brings his criticism and ideas to us with exceptional wit and humor:

„...I mean the construction of the dynamics of micro constituents of a system (be they molecules, ..., firms, cells,..)which yield the dynamics of some aggregate variables of the system.....the issue of microfoundations is in principle separate from that of ‚microintentionality', although obvioulsy in social sciences the relationship between the two is a tricky problem. However, contrary to the prevalent opinion amongst economists, I think it is healthy to keep the two matters separate. ... no physicist in a right mind would claim that molecules tend in probability to some energy state because they ‚maximize their utility', so some partial decoupling might also help investigators..."

The theme of microfoundations of aggregate phenomena is taken up in chapters 12 ans 23. As Paul Ormerod [3] has taught us, neo-classical individual demand curves do not apply to aggregate phenomena other than maybe cornflakes (indeed, Osborne [4] has taught us that they do not even apply to individuals!). Furthermore, the neo-calassicists themselves proven that, given a textbook individual demand curve, the aggregate demand curves can be anything at all [3].

The reader in search of recent work on modern topics will find much food for though in the 23 chapters of reprints by Dosi and collaborators. Among the topics covered are evolutionary models, many chapters on path dependence, some on computability of models, and ‚stylized facts' (a phrase that I am still not comfortable with).

Nearly nothing is known about aggregates, making modelling there all the more difficult. The neo-clasical answers, Dosi correctly informs us, are too close to pre-Galilean reasoning (a theme that has been developed elsewhere, for good measure [4]). Also with foresight, Professor Dosi argues in several chapters that ‚knowledge' is not equivalent to sheer information, which leads us into the topic of this era, the economics of information (here, he mentions the work of Arrow, Aoki, Ackerlof,, Stiglizz, Radner, Hurwicz and others).

In Substantive and Proceedural Uncertainty (by Dosi and Egidi) a distinction is made between information incompleteness and knowledge incompleteness. Also interesting is that the authors recognize and emphasize the difference between the nature of probability in ordinary gambling and in economics. In the former cases the number and nature of bets placed cannot change the outcome: preferences, states of nature, actions and consequences are easily separable. In this case there is an information gap (we don't know in advance wihich face of a die will show when tossed) but not a competence gap. In economics and finance, in contrast, the ‚events' are not ‚states of nature' but are an inseparable part of the decision process, are not independent of agenmts' actions. We read further that ‚innovation implies nonstationarity..' and that ‚rational procedures' may quickly run against the computational constraints of individual agents. E.g., Nash equilibria may ‚exist' mathematically but may not be recursively realizeable (may not be algorthmically computable-for algorithmic computability in nonlinear dynamics, see [5,6]). On rational choice, they write that empirical evidence on individual behaviors is messy and subject to perturbations. Especially under uncertainty people may make mistakes anticipating expected probabilites and may not maximize. Even in 2-person games winning strategies exist mathematically but may require uncountably-much knowledge in the form of the infinite binary game-tree...

For historic background that is helpful in understanding Dosi's choice of approach to economic theory, see Mirowski's 'Machine Dreams'.

                Book Description

This book is a synthesis of the author's ideas and research concerning the monetary consequences of trade flows, and the relevance of conventional balance of payments adjustment theory. These ideas are considered mainly in the context of developing countries, many of which suffer from deep structural difficulties and severe foreign exchange shortages.

Mainstream economic theory regards the balance of payments to be self-adjusting, meaning that the impact of the balance of payments on the growth and development process is neither considered nor analyzed. In contrast, the author emphasizes the importance of integrating monetary considerations into trade theory and argues that the balance of payments consequences of trade policy need to be carefully addressed. This approach has a number of implications for important issues such as: the sequencing of trade liberalization; the role of the exchange rate in equilibrating the balance of payments; the case for protection; and the way in which the importance of export growth is articulated. Some of the ideas expressed have a long and distinguished ancestry, but they are not part of the mainstream orthodoxy and need airing in a world increasingly divided into rich and poor countries. The author also considers the case for a new international economic order which would better serve the needs of developing countries, particularly by stabilizing primary product prices and controlling speculative capital flows.

Trade and development economists and policymakers concerned with economic growth and development will appreciate the original and illuminating research in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Recommended reading for women in the business world.......2002-09-09

Collaboratively written by experienced business woman and public speaker Linda Breakeall and certified professional image consultant Anna Wildermuth, Unlocking The Secrets Of Successful Women In Business is a thoroughly "reader friendly" how-to, self-help guide written especially for women seeking to develop an effective and successful business career for themselves. Individual chapters offer a wealth of tips, tricks, and techniques about everything from basic business etiquette, to pointers that help women be taken more seriously (lower your voice, be wary of smiling too much, avoid starting sentences with uncertain phrases such as "I think", and more), to maintaining a professional image, to job interview tips, and much, much more. Unlocking The Secrets Of Successful Women In Business is very highly recommended reading for women in the business world from the novice entry-level beginner to the seasoned corporate executive seeking to rise even higher within the corporate environment.

3 out of 5 stars Basic Content, Commercial.......2002-08-11

Every once in a while we find a book that is well-meaning, has lots of good information, but was written by consultants who were just a bit too commercial. It's obvious that Anna Wildermuth wants to help you with your appearance and Linda Brakefall wants to help you with your empowerment, professionalism, and effectiveness. Their addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses are easy-too easy for this reviewer-to find in the book. OK, let's get past the commercial and the authors introducing themselves at the beginning of the book. Let's get into the meat.

The book is organized into 26 Keys for success. Each key is a chapter with text written by the authors and a wide range of guest columnists-cameo appearances, if you will, by people with expertise in the subject matter. These contributions, in a smaller type size, are a bit of a stopper as you read the book, but build a sort of sense of community. Hmmm. Stopper. Like a speed bump or a curve in the road.

Actually, the whole book is designed with curves and speed bumps that slow the reader's pace so more can be absorbed. The pages are filled with tips and quizzes and quotes and questions to answer. Quite a bit to absorb-like the authors mixed a stew and threw everything in that would add to the "body." The "body" of this book is loaded. It's a potpourri of information and advice about being taken seriously, rising to the top, charm and charisma, personal and professional style, approachability, color, clothing, business travel, image, and working with your shape. You will find helpful information on business make-up, hair and grooming, business etiquette, interviewing for a job, presentation skills, and public speaking.

The authors cover a wide range of topics, though I'm not sure that I agree with all they suggest. Being a man, I asked a couple of businesswomen to look at this book with me so I could be sure to be fair. Their response included words like "inconsistent," "unprofessional," and "very basic."

There's a section in the back of the book offering resources for additional learning. By category, you will find what I believe are book titles and authors. There is insufficient detail for those who might want to access additional information, but readers could use search engines on the world wide web to do their research.

The authors are, no doubt, fine professionals in their fields. Unfortunately, while it offers valuable content, this book is not as professional as it could be. Advertisements at the end of every chapter is a bit much. The publishing of this book was managed by The Jenkins Group, says a statement on the back cover. They should have been more deeply involved to keep this stew from becoming stone soup.

I've been in the mortgage business for over 15 years, and I've been to many seminars, but this book seemed to bring it all together. It's good, practical advice for people that want to advance in their careers. Very common sense - where the light bulb goes on above your head and you think - "Why didn't I think of that!" I would highly recommend it!

                  4 out of 5 stars Book is a keeper.......2005-08-01

I ordered this book a couple of years ago and ended up buying it for all my employees. I still think it has lots of valuable advice for most people who want to be successful. In fact,I'd like to see it expanded...some of my younger employees could use all the advice they can get.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible, Just Terrible.......2005-07-12

I glanced through this book briefly, and most of the advice looks poor. Or a lot of extra work. If all of these "suggestions" are truly necessary for success on the job, it's no wonder people are starting their own businesses in droves - anything to get away from these hoops rather than jump through them!

5 out of 5 stars Great place to turn.......1999-10-22

This book has been really good for me. It's easy to read, yet tackles the kinds of problems I face almost every day on the job. It's sort of a guide for the working person. And it's a great reminder that we can empower ourselves to steer our careers in the direction we want and take steps to ease the daily grind. I recommend it.

This is a book everyone should read. Bruzzese shows new ways to look at your work and yourself. She uses humor, great examples, and personal insight, as well as input from the many experts she interviewed. The book is practical, giving you steps you can take and ideas you can apply to your own job and career. The book is easy to read, and the examples make it easy to remember the good ideas. Anita's insight will help you feel better about your work, find ways to improve your performance, and look forward to developing your career.

                        Book Description

The HMMWV, better known as the Humvee or Hummer, has set the world standard for army tactical vehicles since its introduction into the US Army in the 1980s. Designed to be the successor to the jeep of World War II with a greater load-bearing capacity, the Humvee has proven to be adaptable to a wide range of roles, including weapons carrier, missile launcher, command vehicle and other specialized types. This book traces the development and use of the Humvee and its variations, including the latest families of armored Humvees used in Iraq in 2003-05, and its adoption in a peacekeeping role the world over.

                            Book Description

This volume uses a series of portraits of 'imperial lives' in order to rethink the history of the British Empire in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It tells the stories of men and women who dwelt for extended periods in one colonial space before moving on to dwell in others, developing 'imperial careers'. These men and women consist of four colonial governors, two governors' wives, two missionaries, a nurse/entrepreneur, a poet/civil servant and a mercenary. Leading scholars of colonialism guide the reader through the ways that these individuals made the British Empire, and the ways that the empire made them. Their life histories constituted meaningful connections across the empire that facilitated the continual reformulation of imperial discourses, practices and cultures. Together, their stories help us to re-imagine the geographies of the British Empire and to destabilize the categories of metropole and colony.

                            Book Description

Bridging gaps between intellectual history, biography, and military/colonial history, Barnett Singer and John Langdon provide a challenging, readable interpretation of French imperialism and some of its leading figures from the early modern era through the Fifth Republic. They ask us to rethink and reevaluate, pulling away from the usual shoal of simplistic condemnation. In a series of finely-etched biographical studies, and with much detail on both imperial culture and wars (including World War I and II), they offer a balanced, deep, strong portrait of key makers and defenders of the French Empire, one that will surely stimulate much historical work in the field.

                            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars assessment of top French colonial administrators.......2005-01-26

Singer and Langdon, both university professors, reassess French imperialism; which along with the imperialism of other Western nations, has been negatively portrayed in the colonial and postcolonial studies of recent decades. They do so through biographical and historical studies of key French proconsuls in French colonies in Africa and Asia. They do not try to make the simplistic point that French imperialism and colonialism was good, or even desirable. But they aim to balance the picture of this colonialism, and by extension all Western colonialism. While not trying to gloss over brutalities and atrocities committed by colonial masters, the authors note that colonialism also worked to "reduce feudal inequalities, abolish serfdom, establish constitutions, build roads...and extend educational opportunities." This was seen by France--and other colonial powers--as "civilizing backward peoples." But it could also be seen as raising the living standards of the inhabitants of the colonies. Shedding a light on French colonialism by biographically and analytically looking at the specific colonial officials of Thomas Robert Bugeaud of Algeria, Louis-Hubert-Gonzalve Lyautey of Southeast Asia, and others, the authors inject a human dimension, with all of its aspirations and faults, into the subject. This is a scholarly work which reads almost like history for the general reader for dealing with historical characters and seeing historical issues in terms of their personalities and actions. With its balanced, broader view of French colonialism, "Cultured Force" restores an ambiguity to its subject, thus making it a subject of true history and human enterprise rather than an ideological or myopic one.

                              Book Description

In the heyday of Empire just before the First World War, Lord Cromer was second only to Lord Curzon in fame and public esteem. In the days when Cairo and Calcutta represented the twin poles of British power in Asia and Africa, Cromer's commanding presence seemed to radiate the essential spirit of imperial rule. In this first modern biography Roger Owen charts the life of the man revered by the British and hated by the Egyptians, the real ruler of Egypt for nearly a quarter of a century. A member of the famous City banking family of Baring Brothers, Cromer in his youth seemed set to be, if not the black sheep of the family, distinguished mainly by lack of academic ability and a taste for the fashionable pursuits of his day. His first military posting, to Corfu, was welcomed by him on account of the excellent shooting to be had in the region. Roger Owen shows how, almost imperceptibly, his commitment to public service grew, due in part at least to his relationship with Ethel Errington who, after long delay, became his first wife. From the island outposts of the old British Empire, to India, the jewel in its crown, and finally to the new Empire in Africa, Cromer represented the might of Britain's Empire. Few imperial administrators had either his range of experience or his long practice of ruling different non-European peoples, at a time when the whole notion of Empire itself entered more and more into the metropolitan political debate. Roger Owen makes extensive use of Cromer's official correspondence, family papers, memoirs, and the personal letters of his friends and colleagues to explore all aspects of Cromer's life in imperial government. He examines his innovative role in international finance and his energetic re-engagement with Britain's troubled political life following his formal retirement in 1907. Finally, he assesses the sometimes bitter legacy of imperial rule left by Cromer.

In Married to the Empire, Mary A. Procida provides a new approach to the growing history of women and empire by situating women at the center of the practices and policies of British imperialism. Rebutting interpretations that have marginalized women in the empire, this book demonstrates that women were crucial to establishing and sustaining the British Raj in India from the "High Noon" of imperialism in the late 19th Century through to Indian independence in 1947.

                                    Book Description

Alan Lennox Boyd served as Colonial Secretary from 1954 to 1959--a decisive period in the history of British decolonization. A towering figure both in terms of his place within Conservative Party history and his influence on Imperial history, he represented a particular trend within the Party, flirting with fascism and holding the Empire in high regard. He gained a reputation as an impediment to consitutional reform in the colonies, yet during his period of office he played a key role in a number of major decisions, including the decolonization of Cyprus. Tracing the development of his highly idiosyncratic brand of right wing politics, this biography presents a portrait of a highly complex man and a challenging reinterpretation of British colonial policy at this time.

                                        Book Description

Based on the author's letters and writings during a career that spanned World War II and the end of empire, and included service in Nigeria, Eritrea, Singapore, Malaya, the Gold Coast and a spell in the Royal West African Frontier Force, this book describes the life and work of a colonial officer. The author argues that the typical district officer in the post-war period was a man free from Kipling's aspirations, accepting and trying to smooth the path to independence.

                                          Book Description

Sir Philip Mitchell has a distinguished career in the British Colonial Service during the latter stages of Empire. He was Governor of Uganda and Fiji, High Commissioner of the Western Pacific and finally Governor of Kenya. During World War II, he administered the former Italian territories in East Africa and had the rank of Major General.

Mitchell was in the forefront of educational, economic, social and political reform and believed that human relations - especially race relations - were the key to progress in the Empire. However, his final years in Kenya were overshadowed by what appears to be a faulty reading of the political situation - a failure to appreciate the power of the Mau Mau. This book surveys his career contrasting the final years with the years of achievement, examines the problems that beset him and defends his record.

Frost is the author of a study of Kenya, Race Against Time.

                                            Book Description

"Birders have shown that they want and need regional avian distribution books such as this one. This book will fill a gap in the effort to accomplish this sort of regional guide for all areas of Texas. The Trans-Pecos is a popular destination for birders-making this ever more important."

—Greg W. Lasley, Editor, Texas Region, Field Notes

The Trans-Pecos, that huge region of Texas west of the Pecos River, is richer in recorded bird species than all but three of the United States. Hundreds of birders come here each year in search of species such as the Colima Warbler which are rarely if ever spotted in other parts of the country. Yet, until now, there was no comprehensive birding guide devoted to the entire region.

Designed for intermediate to advanced birders, Birds of the Trans-Pecos provides an annotated checklist of all 482 species found in the region. The species accounts include seasonal distribution, documentation of nesting, most likely habitat, and the bird's status as a "Texas Review Species." The authors also describe the geography and bird habitats of the Trans-Pecos; federal and state parklands in the area (including Big Bend and Guadalupe Mountains), with the species that occur in each; and the mountain-breeding birds and species of special interest.
