        5 out of 5 stars Kelly's funniest, a must-have for fans.......2000-12-07

Kelly is widely regarded as one of the very best comic-strip artists ever (along with folks like George Herriman of "Krazy Kat" and Al Capp of "Lil' Abner" fame). This Simon & Schuster reprint gathers 3 long out-of-print Pogo books. The books feature the characters from Kelly's daily strip, in a series of longer stories created just for these books, plus wonderful nonsense poetry and stories that don't use the characters from the strip (but are just as much fun). The artwork is gorgeous (even his lettering, much of it done with a paintbrush and in different typestyles for different characters, is masterful), the writing sparkles, and the emphasis is on humor (much of it with a topical spin, but without the pointed satire of Kelly's anti-McCarthy material). As good as it gets.

              Book Description

Banking in Transition Economies is a modern analysis of banking in the transition economies of Central and Eastern Europe and includes a detailed examination of banking in the first five years of transition as well as policy recommendations for banking reform in the region. This authoritative book presents an extensive investigation of changes in the structure of the banking industry and the progress of privatization, particularly in Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic. A comparative evaluation of the different approaches to banking reform and restructuring is presented for these countries and the relative success of each scheme is assessed. In addition, privatization and the restructuring of 'problem banks' are analyzed as well as the strategy for re-capitalization and bank failure. The authors assess the organization and design of the new regulatory structures and the evolving role of savings institutions. The role of foreign banks in bringing reform to the region is also analyzed. The book offers policy prescriptions for the transition from a passive banking structure to an active financial sector supporting the development of the industrial sector, and for the role of the state after privatization. This book will be of great importance to bankers in Central and Eastern Europe and economists interested in the process of transition, as well as financial and monetary economists.

This is a wonderful former dissertation that became a good book, especially important now as we witness the ruin of the US auto industry, with the full complicity of its inmates. Notably, the last people to jump the sinking ship will be the UAW leadership, not the Ford or GM bosses. The UAW bosses need to preserve their pensions, while the Big Auto bosses know they are not in business to make cars, but money. How US auto came to its zombie like state now is, of course, rooted in its past, and Meyer does a fine job getting us in at the start. From Taylor, who sought to strip the mind of the worker on the job and to replace that mind with the mind of the boss, to the Christian benevolent societies that sought to Improve the Foreigners by destroying their culture---and the carrots and sticks that made that possible---all of that is here in the text. And the finger story is worth the price of admission alone.

                        Book Description

During the late Middle Ages, the increasing expansion of administrative, legal, and military systems by a central government, together with the greater involvement of the commons in national life, brought England closer than ever to political nationhood. Examining a diverse array of texts-ranging from Latin and vernacular historiography to Lollard tracts, Ricardian poetry, and chivalric treatises-this volume reveals the variety of forms "England" assumed when it was imagined in the medieval West.

These essays disrupt conventional thinking about the relationship between premodernity and modernity, challenge traditional preconceptions regarding the origins of the nation, and complicate theories about the workings of nationalism. Imagining a Medieval English Nation is not only a collection of new readings of major canonical works by leading medievalists, it is among the first book-length analyses on the subject and of critical interest.

                          Book Description

Since the 1970’s, when Maxine Hong Kingston began publishing her prize-winning books, we have seen an explosive growth in Asian American literature, a literature that has won both popular and critical acclaim. Literary anthologies and critical studies attest to a growing academic interest in the field. This book seeks to identify the forces behind this literary emergence and to explore both the unique place of Asian Americans in American culture and what that place says about the way Americanness is defined.

The author is preoccupied with how the sense of the nation is disseminated through the practice of reading and writing, and he argues that Asian American literature is a productive discursive negotiation of the contemporary contradiction in American citizenship. By analyzing the textual strategies with which literary Asian America is represented, the book shows how the “fictive ethnicity” of the nation continues to exert its regulatory power and suggests how we can work toward a radical American democratic consent.

Through nuanced readings of exemplary texts, the author delineates how Asian American literary production has become a site for the creation of Asian American subjects and community. The texts range from Kingston’s enigmatic Tripmaster Monkey to the seductive cunning of Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club; from Bharati Mukherjee’s romantic Jasmine to the geocultural ambivalence of David Mura’s Turning Japanese; and from the transvestic subversion of David Henry Hwang’s M. Butterfly to the transpirational tropes of David Wong Louie’s Pangs of Love.

Imagining the Nation integrates a fine appreciation of the formal features of Asian American literature with the conflict and convergence among different reading communities and the dilemma of ethnic intellectuals caught in the process of their institutionalization. By articulating Asian American structures of feeling across the nexus of East and West, black and white, nation and diaspora, the book both sets out a new terrain for Asian American literary culture and significantly strengthens the multiculturalist challenge to the American canon.

                          Book Description

Exploring the emergence and evolution of theories of nationhood that continue to be evoked in present-day Japan, Susan L. Burns provides a close examination of the late-eighteenth-century intellectual movement kokugaku, which means "the study of our country.” Departing from earlier studies of kokugaku that focused on intellectuals whose work has been valorized by modern scholars, Burns seeks to recover the multiple ways "Japan" as social and cultural identity began to be imagined before modernity.

Central to Burns's analysis is Motoori Norinaga’s Kojikiden, arguably the most important intellectual work of Japan's early modern period. Burns situates the Kojikiden as one in a series of attempts to analyze and interpret the mythohistories dating from the early eighth century, the Kojiki and Nihon shoki. Norinaga saw these texts as keys to an original, authentic, and idyllic Japan that existed before being tainted by "flawed" foreign influences, notably Confucianism and Buddhism. Hailed in the nineteenth century as the begetter of a new national consciousness, Norinaga's Kojikiden was later condemned by some as a source of Japan's twentieth-century descent into militarism, war, and defeat. Burns looks in depth at three kokugaku writers—Ueda Akinari, Fujitani Mitsue, and Tachibana Moribe—who contested Norinaga's interpretations and produced competing readings of the mythohistories that offered new theories of community as the basis for Japanese social and cultural identity. Though relegated to the footnotes by a later generation of scholars, these writers were quite influential in their day, and by recovering their arguments, Burns reveals kokugaku as a complex debate—involving history, language, and subjectivity—with repercussions extending well into the modern era.

All in all, this book both clarifies and drastically changes one's ideas about kokugaku in Japan. The exploration of what are today considered "unorthodox" kokugaku scholars is interesting and really brings to light the complexity and plurality within this "school of thought" (if one may still call it that). And the comparison of different scholars' glosses on the first part of the "Kojiki" for what it tells us about their differing agendas is a masterful method. Really fascinating.

This would easily be a five-star book if it weren't for the inconsistent editing. For some reason Tanuma Okitsugu's personal name keeps on showing up here as "Okitsuga." Annoying typos and sentences bearing traces of incomplete revision further mar what is otherwise an excellent and exemplary piece of scholarship.

                            Book Description

One of the most powerful nationalist ideas in modern Europe is the assertion that there is a link between people and their landscape. Focusing on the heart of German romanticism, the Rhineland, Thomas Lekan examines nature protection activities from Wilhelmine Germany through the end of the Nazi era to illuminate the relationship between environmental reform and the cultural construction of national identity.

In the late nineteenth century, anxieties about national character infused ecological concerns about industrialization, spurring landscape preservationists to protect the natural environment. In the Rhineland's scenic rivers, forests, and natural landmarks, they saw Germany as a timeless and organic nation rather than a recently patchworked political construct. Landscape preservation also served conservative social ends during a period of rapid modernization, as outdoor pursuits were promoted to redirect class-conscious factory workers and unruly youth from "crass materialism" to the German homeland. Lekan's examination of Nazi environmental policy challenges recent work on the "green" Nazis by showing that the Third Reich systematically subordinated environmental concerns to war mobilization and racial hygiene.

This book is an original contribution not only to studies of national identity in modern Germany but also to the growing field of European environmental history.

                              Book Description

This book examines attempts to cultivate an Austrian identity based on a civic rather than an ethnic conception of a national community. It focuses on the ideas of Joseph Samuel Bloch, an Austrian-Jewish writer and politician who sought to cultivate a civic identity to unify the nationalities of multiethnic Austria. Bloch called for a hyphenated Austrian consciousness that respected the desire to protect pre-existing ethnic, cultural, religious, and linguistic bonds while building transethnic ties based on citizenship. This study also analyzes the ideas of his mentor, Adolf Fischhof, another Austrian-Jewish reform-minded politician. Finally, it compares Bloch's ideas to those of other Austrian reformers of various ethnic and political backgrounds in order to discover how they conceived of a supraethnic Austrian consciousness.

Imagining an Austrian Nation explores the meaning of nationalism and identity in a pluralistic society, issues that confound humanity as much in the twenty-first century as they did in the nineteenth.

                                Book Description

The concept of the nation is central to modern understandings both of political community and of personal identity. Notions of national distinctiveness and of international competition dominate the ways in which we think about history, about geography, about culture and economics and human character. The essays in this book seek to understand the complex ways in which nations are imaginatively constructed. Dealing chiefly with British and German examples, but relating these examples to wider conceptual and theoretical issues, they illustrate both the diversity and the potential of a cultural approach to nationhood and nationalism. The book is conceived in an interdisciplinary spirit, drawing insights from intellectual history, art history, geography, and literary studies, and tracing the implications of nationalist habits of thought across fields as varied as historiography, cartography, visual art, science and economic statistics. Taken together, the essays offer a wide-ranging exploration of the cultural, ideological and intellectual processes through which national identities are developed, debated and articulated.

Examining early African American literature from the perspective of a Black Nationalist literary critic, this analysis explores important novels from the 19th and 20th centuries. The discussion demonstrates that Black Nationalist themes were present in many early novels, prefiguring the themes that would become the centerpiece of the Black Power Movement. One of the few books that examines early African American novels, this definitive exploration of them adds to the discussion of black literature and literary criticism.

Hans Boos' name will not be as familiar to many readers of herpetology books as some of the more well-publicized worldwide authors whom he acknowledges and credits with helping him produce this book such as John Behler, Harold Cogger, and James Dixon; but Boos is nonetheless as towering and authoritative a herpetologist and as spellbinding a writer as can be found anywhere. Before his retirement, Boos made his life's work as curator of the Emperor Valley Zoo in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago where he spent thirty years collecting and observing the snakes of this tiny, two-island, independent Caribbean nation. Forty-seven species of snakes are currently known to occur on these two islands; only four of which are venomous, consisting of 2 coral snakes and 2 viperids (the fer de lance and the infamous bushmaster) that are found only on larger Trinidad. Of this number, 44 are found in Trinidad and 21 in Tobago, 3 of which are indigenous to Tobago. Note, by the way, that Boos points out that the venomous fer de lance is responsible for the majority of deadly bites suffered on these islands, while he attributes a relatively mild temperament to the reportedly sinister bushmaster which, it turns out, has never claimed a life on either Trinidad or Tobago in spite of its huge size and terrible reputation elsewhere in its South and Central American range.

A prime mission in life for Boos has been to educate the local population to treat their mostly non-venomous reptile neighbors with more respect and humanity. About 35 years ago, Boos co-authored a modest booklet mainly for local distribution and consumption to Trinidad and Tobago's schoolchildren to help bring about a much needed awareness of the value of the islands' herpetofauna and the need to protect it. A first of its kind for this tiny nation, this small work has planted the seeds of more enlightened and responsible attitudes in a new generation of these islanders towards their snake co-inhabitants. Boos states that he hopes his current book will help "halt the killing of one kind of animal because of unreasoning fear on the part of another" - a practice which sad to say is deeply ingrained in the local culture of this little twin-island nation.

Boos writes in the style of Ditmars, and it is pure joy to read his book, filled as it is with anecdotes and gripping tales of snakey adventure and folklore in the Caribbean. Scientific terminology is used throughout, along with multitudes of bibliographic references. It is really hard to put this engaging book down and it was a sad moment when I realized that I had finished reading this wonderful work. Boos deserves to be much better known and read, and I envy those who have not yet had a chance to read this book - a treat is in store for you. The scientific validity of this book is nonpareil, with the book being Number 31 in Texas A&M's "W.L. Moody, Jr., Natural History Series", and as such has passed a thorough, first class peer review.

The book contains an excellent and thoroughly enjoyable 30 page Introduction, followed by about 140 pages of Taxonomy and Species Accounts, 40 pages of Snakebite Antidotes and Anecdotes, and two 2-page appendices dealing with specific concerns of the largely snake-illiterate local population. The first of these two appendices deals with the locally popular "Belgian Black Stone" remedy for bites from snakes, dogs, bugs, etc. (Hint: don't bet the farm on using this stone to save your bacon.), and the second appendix is intended to help in "Identifying Large, Diurnal, Mostly Black Snakes in Trinidad and Tobago" (I guess I can be forgiven if I reveal that no matter how panicky the Islanders are about such sinister snakes, none with this appearance is venomous). After a basic 92-term glossary, the book concludes with nearly 700 thoroughly researched references, and an index of about 800 scientific and common names of snakes in English and Spanish. There is also an excellent section of 48 color photographs; albeit they are rather small, fitting six to the page.

It is noteworthy to point out that the Taxonomy and Species Accounts, which represent about one half of the book, not only contain the expected notes about locations of deposited specimens, description, range, local names, natural history, and folklore; but also as much anecdotal commentary as is available. This latter is engagingly written and highly entertaining as well as informative. For example, Boos relates the tale of "the Dominican boa, known as Tete Chien (dog's head), considered by the Caribs in Dominica as big, big, big, with a crest on its head, and able to crow just like a cock. A similar snake is said to inhabit the deep woods of Trinidad, a mythical serpent said to have a comb on its head like a domestic fowl and to crow like a rooster. It is difficult" Boos notes, "to ascertain whether this is a folk belief transplanted into Trinidad from the northern Antilles, or from West Africa, or a relict of tribal Arawakan/Cariban folklore". At the least, this anecdote reveals the strong West African presence in the culture of Trinidad and Tobago and helps explain the Islanders' casual insensitivity towards snakes which is firmly rooted in the West African origins of many of the islands' inhabitants where such attitudes have their origin.

I highly recommend this book as an entertaining read, never mind the extrinsic value it presents to learn all one wishes to know about the ophidian fauna of Trinidad and Tobago. Boos writes beautifully and this book should thoroughly entertain its readers as well as enlightening them. [...]
