This mini-book for the gnome's coffee table contains superb color photos, plus occasional color artist's renderings, of Wright's exteriors, interiors, and accessories from all periods of his life; it even includes items from his art collection.

Informative mini-essays in each of 7 chapters plus Introduction precede the pix; includes glossary and index. Lotsa pages in this "Big Little Book" format -- a sleeper!

      Book Description

This book offers a novel approach to the analysis of democracy, and an application of that approach to a variety of democratic institutions, including elections, representation, political parties and the separation of powers. Standard economic approaches to politics concentrate on the design of institutions and the role of individuals motivated by self-interest. The authors incorporate a broader view of political motivation, assuming individuals are moral as well as rational, and provide a wide-ranging discussion of the design of democratic institutions.

      Download Description

This book offers a novel account of key features of modern representative democracy. Working from the rational actor tradition, it builds a middle ground between orthodox political theory and the economic analysis of politics. Standard economic models of politics emphasise the design of the institutional devices of democracy as operated by essentially self-interested individuals. This book departs from that model by focusing on democratic desires alongside democratic devices, stressing that important aspects of democracy depend on the motivation of democrats and the interplay between devices and desires. Individuals are taken to be not only rational, but also somewhat moral. The authors argue that this approach provides access to aspects of the debate on democratic institutions that are beyond the narrowly economic model. They apply their analysis to voting, elections, representation, political departments and the separation and division of powers, providing a wide-ranging discussion of the design of democratic institutions.

      5 out of 5 stars "Implications of Norm-Following Behavior".......2001-08-16

Excerpted from The Independent Review (Summer 2001) by Roger D. Congleton.

My main complaint about Geoffrey Brennan and Alan Hamlin's new book is its title, which supplies a nice alliteration but seems a bit misleading. The title might lead the reader to expect a book about democratic intrigue at the turn of the twentieth century, when the high tide of democratic ideology gave rise to widespread suffrage movements and electoral reforms. Instead, what the reader finds is a very interesting rational-choice analysis of how constitutions should be designed if individuals can and do choose to follow normative rules-none of which seem, strictly speaking, to be intrinsically democratic. A helpful subtitle might have been "Implications of Norm-Following Behavior for Constitutional Design," which would indicate an issue on which the book does make a good deal of progress.

I have only very minor quarrels with the authors' basic argument, which on the whole seems to be very reasonable-and indeed many of their points have been mentioned, as they point out, in classic works on constitutional design.

Overall, the evidence suggests that ethical behavior in politics occurs, but it may be of more limited significance to voters than the Brennan-Hamlin analysis seems to imply. However, to their credit, Brennan and Hamlin expressly claim only that norm-following behavior does occur and may be relied on in some circumstances. This much all but the most diehard skeptics would surely acknowledge.

Even those who doubt this more modest but still significant claim, however, will benefit from considering the path-breaking analysis Brennan and Hamlin develop in this book.

          Book Description

Variational inequalities proved to be a very useful tool for investigation and solution of various equilibrium type problems arising in Economics, Operations Research, Mathematical Physics, and Transportation. This book is devoted to a new general approach to constructing solution methods for variational inequalities, which was called the combined relaxation approach. This approach is rather flexible and allows one to construct various methods both for single-valued and for multi-valued variational inequalities, including nonlinear constrained problems. The other essential feature of the combined relaxation methods is that they are convergent under very mild assumptions. The book can be viewed as an attempt to discribe the existing combined relaxation methods as a whole.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a book that cuts through the BS and tells it like is.......2002-08-25

In the competitive world of today's business world where bottom line and results are often the sole focus of business management, the real foundation of the company - its people and culture - are too often overlooked. Author Fromm, using vivid examples from his own business, and often some from his client's, illustrates how shifting the focus internally by treating employees like royalty and facilitating their efforts instead of creating obstacles, results in richer bottom lines, improved production, and better customer service. Fromm goes on, in an attitude rare among top execs, to state that a prime responsibility for any manager is to "cut through the red tape" that hinders top performance by an employee.

Overall, a very well written book that is remarkably free of techno-talk and useless clutter. Fun to read and gripping in insights, this book should be on the table of every manager today.

            4 out of 5 stars Practical Man-Management Tips....but Universal?.......2001-02-02

The focus of this slim book is people management - employees and customers. It explores various ways of boosting employee morale and thereby productivity. Written in a very engaging and endearing style, the book is full of practical and down to earth tips for managers to make the workplace enjoyable in a service oriented industry. But the problem is that many of these tips are too wacky to be implemented in an environment other than advertising, to which the author belongs. I seriously doubt if such methods will work in large manufacturing set-ups. Nevertheless there is enough wisdom in these pages, which can be adapted by the discerning students and practitioners of man-management.

5 out of 5 stars This book dares to remind us of our powerful role.......2001-09-26

This book brings us back to the absolute roots of our America. An idea that has been lost in a mass of individualism and consumerism.
In fact, this book actually got me through the recent Sept. 11, 2001 events in NYC. I read it under the instruction of my College English Professor. At first it seemed overwhelming, but before long there was a feeling of hope.
The United States over the years has faced phenomenal obstacles...time and time again we have come back and stronger than ever each time. It focuses on how people, like you and me have taken an initiative for positive change and have succeeded, time and time again. Using actual historical events to back the ideas presented.
This book is intense, yet simple. It proves without a doubt the important role each of us plays directly affects the outcome as a whole of this our United States.
              I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars The State of Work: The Loss of Shared Experience in America.......2000-10-16

Boyte and Kari articulate the breakdown of citizenship in America, emphasizing the decline of shared experience and ownership in American public life. The dynamics of modern work, have taken people away from collective experiences, creating a contemporary society that places little value on individual contributions to the greater society. Boyte and Kari explore the relationship bewteen work and democracy, which they believe are both on the decline in America.

Much of what Boyte and Kari write of, to me, reinforced the mainstay of Roosevelt's New Deal policies of putting people back to work -- which ultimately restored their dignatity, created identity as people contributed to society, and restored faith in American Democracy. This was an unparalled time in American History, where the people believed in their leader, accepted common values, and reuninited a fractured nation -- all on social-psychological terms based on collective participation in public life.

I found this to be a very interesting and informative book. The book is relatively easy to read, and reframes the the problems of public work and democracy from a historical context -- which from my eyes makes it a very educational and worthwhile work.

4 out of 5 stars Restoring Public Life in America, Rediscovering Citizenship.......1999-12-21

Boyte and Kari illustrate in vivid terms the challenges of our current political dilemma: America has become a nation of consumers at every level of our economy, government, and even the non-profit/volunteer sector. Citizens no longer see themselves as distinct actors, involved in the day to day toils of sustaining public goods and public life in general. Instead, this book travels through American history with up to date examples to make the point that a pattern of "citizens as consumers" leads to "cut my taxes, increase the spending" whining, with an overall erosion of public trust in our government and other public institutions. Boyte and Kari point to "work" as a central tenet of American democracy, as opposed to democratic self-governance as simply voting (at best) and consumption of public services.

If you have ever felt angry or disillusioned about government as an increasingly larger service provider, the disproportionate power of experts and political professionals in our government, and the growing cynicism and lack of faith in American politics, then this book will replenish your energy with historical references from the Abraham Lincoln to Martin Luther King Jr, and offers a number of contemporary, hands-on examples of how democracy is being revitalized throughout the United States.

                    Book Description

The Age of Wars of Religion saw navies, armies, armed merchant companies, and mercenaries battle one another and local potentates in many lands and along numerous shores. Wars of religion were fought in and between all the major religions and civilizations, from Europe to China, in Africa, and in the isolated Americas, mixing motives of knightly idealism, mercenary greed, and competing claims of divine sanction. This unparalleled work traces the extraordinary upheavals of the period in military technology, competing theologies, and civilizational change that were brought about by, or impinged upon, military conflict. It offers nearly 2,000 discrete but cross-referenced entries on cultural, military, religious and political history, as well as geography, biography, and military literature. Close to 2,000 entries offer detailed information on the major events, places, battles, figures, technologies, and ideas one must know to begin to make sense of the past six centuries of global conflicts. Though especially ferocious and intense, the Wars of Reformation and Counter-Reformation fought by Europeans from the 15th through 17th centuries were hardly unique in world or military history. The Byzantine Empire, bastion of Christian Orthodoxy, staggered to the tortuous end of its long conflict with the Ottoman Empire, the Great Power of the Sunni Muslim world. The Ottomans, in turn, were still engaged in an equally ancient intra-Muslim war, between Sunnis and Shi'ites. In India, the Hindu Rajputs and Marathas, and also the Sikhs, organized armies around religious communities to throw off the "Muslim Yoke" (Mughul Empire), and also fought against Christian invaders from Europe. As for the isolated Americas, ideas of divine kingship sustained by powerful priesthoods and religious warfare also prevailed, as exemplified by the Inca and Aztec empires. Features Include:

                              Book Description

With equal measures of wit, scientific wisdom, and homespun common sense, Alan Pistorius makes his lifelong love of birds come alive for anyone who wants to take up birding as a hobby or merely gain more pleasure from the birds around the home, cottage, or camp. With diagrams, illustrations, and full-color photographs throughout, this is a completely revised and updated version of Pistorius's popular Country Journal Book of Birding and Bird Attraction. The author advises readers on how to make their back yards havens for local birds, what constitutes proper food for birds, what to look for in well-designed feeders, how to build appropriate houses, and how to make baths that birds will actually use. Pistorius's style is lighthearted and humorous, and he's never averse to directing a little gentle humor at the foibles of fellow devotees when they begin to take themselves and their hobby too seriously.
