Book Description
The Myth of Property is the first book-length study to focus directly on the variable and complex structure of ownership. It critically analyzes what it means to own something, and it takes familiar debates about distributive justice and recasts them into discussions of the structure of ownership. The traditional notion of private property assumed by both defenders and opponents of that system is criticized and exposed as a "myth." The book then puts forward a new theory of what it means to own something, one that will be important for any theory of distributive justice. This new approach more adequately reveals the disparate social and individual values that property ownership serves to promote. The study has importance for understanding the reform of capitalist and welfare state systems, as well as the institution of market economies in former socialist states, for the view developed here makes the traditional dichotomy between private ownership capitalism and public ownership socialism obsolete. This new approach to ownership also places egalitarian principles of distributive justice in a new light and challenges critics to clarify aspects of property ownership worth protecting against calls for greater equality. The book closes by showing how defenders of egalitarianism can make use of some of the ideas and values that traditionally made private property appear to be such a pervasive human institution.

Information Rules: A Strategic Guide to the Network Economy
ASIN: 0324261306 |
Book Description
This textbook brings modern I/O analysis to the undergraduate level. Consistent with modern analysis, the authors focus explicitly on the nature of strategic interaction and make extensive use of game theoretic tools. At the same time, they never lose sight of the policy motivation behind much IO analysis. Formal analysis is combined with many practical applications, and the presentation does not assume familiarity with calculus, rather it relies on the ability to work through algebraic equations.
Customer Reviews:
Not very clear.......2007-08-10
I had a very hard time following what's going on because the language is not very clear and too verbose. The book focuses on the beauty of language rather than how to express the ideas in a clear and understandable manner. Makes simple stuff a lot harder than it should. Translating equations into words is sometimes confusing, and the concepts are too ideal that they can hardly apply to the real world situations.
do not touch.......2006-12-26
the book is filled with typo. Given that this is third edition, the author doesn't seem to pay much attention to the hw. I was a TA for this class, and it took me some times to figure out what i did wrong because the hw questions are wrong. The theories in this book can only be applied in the context of the book's examples; some of these theories are not general and can't be applied in a broad sense.
Induvitably excellent book!.......2003-11-04
Above all, it enraptured me with its practical orientation,
which really builds the economic sense at the reader. Numerous, straight superior and often also heartbreaking examples make theory well comprehensible. There doesn't lack nor more complex mathematical assecession for more serious study. 1A

Book Description
Financial markets are given to instability, but some financial systems are more crisis-prone than others. Natasha Hamilton-Hart's historically grounded investigation of central banks, governments, and private bankers in Southeast Asia helps explain why. Focusing on Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore, she shows how the long-term development and internal attributes of central banks and state financial institutions shape their interactions with private bankers and influence their ability to manage the financial sector.
The politics of finance in Southeast Asia is understudied, Hamilton-Hart contends, and central banks themselves virtually ignored. Yet central banks play a pivotal role in determining a country's vulnerability to regional and global financial pressures such as the currency and financial crises of the late 1990s. Southeast Asian central bankers were major players in the events surrounding these upheavals. Countries in the region experienced the economic chaos in different ways, however, as the central banks of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore drew upon different institutional capacities and legacies.
Asian States, Asian Bankers brings new case material to the field of political economics and delineates the operation of central banks and their roles in the monetary and financial policies of three Southeast Asian states. In addition, Hamilton-Hart's work bridges two areas that have often been studied apart from each other: the national-level politics of financial management and the transnational orientation of many bankers in Southeast Asia.

Book Description
Earthenware is the most important material in Southeast Asian archaeology, yet there has been little published work aimed at understanding and dating earthenware artifacts and materials on a regional basis. A framework for understanding earthenware would help enormously in creating a more nuanced image of the cultural history of pre- and early historic Southeast Asia.
This volume draws together essays from Southeast Asia's top archaeologists, and includes contributions from every country in the region. In addition to providing a baseline of information on what is known of earthenware across the region, strong analytical work here yields new understandings of the origins of the prehistoric tripod vessels of the Malayan Peninsula, and the role of earthenware from a kiln site in southern Thailand in the regional trade of the 11th to 14th centuries, among other subjects.
Though we are still some way from being able to write a textbook on the earthenware of Southeast Asia, this volume is an important step towards such a synthesis. It is fully illustrated with diagrams, photographs, illustrations and maps.

Book Description
Greek and Roman warfare differed from other cultures and was unlike any other forms of warfare before and after. The key difference is often held to be that the Greeks and Romans practised a 'Western Way of War', where the aim is an open, decisive battle, won by courage instilled in part by discipline. Harry Sidebottom looks at how and why this 'Western Way of War' was constructed and maintained by the Greeks and Romans, why this concept is so popular and prevalent today, and at whether or not this is an accurate interpretation. All aspects of ancient warfare are thoroughly examined - from philosophy and strategy to the technical skills needed to fight. He looks at war in the wider context - how wars could shape classical society, and how the individual's identity could be constructed by war, for example the Christian soldier fighting in God's name. He also explores the ways in which ancient society thought about conflict: Can a war be just? Why was siege warfare particularly bloody? What role did divine intervention play in the outcome of a battle? Taking fascinating examples from the Iliad, Tacitus, and the Persian Wars, Sidebottom uses arresting anecdotes and striking visual images to show that the any understanding of ancient war is an ongoing process of interpretation.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting Essay.......2007-06-23
This is not a conventional military history. Readers interested in detailed accounts of military techniques, major campaigns, and battles will be disappointed. Sidebottom provides a broad discussion of the role of war in Classical Greece and Rome, how war was conceived by the Greeks and Romans, the experience of war, and even some historiography. Sidebottom draws also on a broad variety of sources, including the traditional literary sources, epigraphy, and artistic depictions of warfare. Well written and illustrated, this is a good introduction to warfare as a part of classical history as opposed to the classical world as part of military history. There is an excellent bibliography.
As a prior reviewer comments, Sidebottom does deal with the concept of the "Western Way of War" though more with how the Greeks and Romans thought of their way of making war than Victor Hansen Davis' theory. There is some appropriate criticism of Hansen Davis' ideas though readers interested in a thorough critique of Hansen Davis' theory should read John Lynn's very good book Battle.
Ancient Warfare.......2007-04-17
'Very Short Introduction' is a very good name for this series. This book looks at 'ancient' (almost entirely Classical and especially Roman) warfare from a number of points of view, including the roles of gender, religion, and the individual in war. I bought this book shortly after I first took an interest in ancient military history about two years ago, and it suited its purpose as an introduction very well.
Victor Davis Hanson: A Very Short Rebuttal.......2006-08-16
Victor Davis Hanson has written several books, "The Western Way of War," "Carnage & Culture," "An Autumn of War," and others, positing a specific mindset and a historical tradition for a "Western Way of War." Sidebottom doesn't agree, and without ever mentioning Hanson's name, engages in an extended rebuttal of Hanson which both misses the point and spends a lot of time giving highly subjective "art critic" style descriptions of ancient artwork depicting warfare. Hanson sets forth a constellation of factors which he says makes up the "Western Way of War." Sidebottom deals only with the factors of heavy infantry and decisive battle. You can't refute a complex theory by rebutting only one or two components of that theory. You should at least try to deal with all of the components.
Ever since reading about the Battle of Thermopylae as a child, I have had an interest in antiquity, and I bought this book to learn a little about ancient warfare. I learned a little about ancient warfare and a lot about the author's preconceptions. If you want to learn more about the nuts and bolts of ancient warfare, there are much better books out there (Hanson's "The Western Way of War," for example, or F.E. Adcock's "The Greek and Macedonian Art of War"). If you want a book with a theory-to-fact ration of 3 to 1, this is the book for your.
A "new history" of Ancient Warfare.......2005-09-09
First, let me say up front, this is a very good overview of the context of Ancient Warfare, but it falls more into the realm of the "new military" history vice the traditional descriptions of battles, tactics, or weapons. In fact of the book's seven chapters only two are related to warfare: Chapter Five is on strategy and Six on "Fighting." There is nothing wrong with this; in fact I believe it is the book's strength. If I were just beginning research into ancient warfare I would want to begin with this book before moving on to more focused studies. Given the limitations placed on the subject by the concept of the "Very Short Introduction" series, Sidebottom does a good job of presenting important factors in society that impacted war and in summarizing some of the current arguments in the field, such as whether or not "strategy" existed in the ancient period or the concept of a western war of war. The book's strength is its discussions on the idea of a western way of war, and its weaknesses are its focus on Rome and Greece, with peripheral discussions of their enemies, and a disjointed chapter on strategy.
