    Book Description

Applying the latest practices from critical theory and discourse to the built environment of early Renaissance Rome, Charles Burroughs sees the city as a field of visual communication and rhetoric. He explores the symbolic dimension of the cultural landscape and the operation of architectural and other visual signs in the urban environment. The result is a profound reconceiving of the implications for the study of Renaissance Rome of the notion of the city as "text." Central to Burrough's project is the articulation of a model of cultural mediation and production that is distinct from the standard notion of patronage as a unilateral transaction.

On one level From Signs to Design focuses on the production of social meaning in and through environmental process during the pontificate of Nicholas V, celebrated for his intimate links to the new culture of humanism and as an archetypal patron of the arts and literature. On another, it is an elucidation of the origins and the ideological impact of architectural and urbanistic motifs and conceptions of spatial order that were central to the Western tradition of monumental city planning.

Burroughs brings an especially wide range of explanatory models - from social history, cultural anthropology, iconology and semiotics - to bear in his analysis of urban reform and the shifts in architectural design that emerged in early Renaissance Rome. He focuses in particular on the material basis and context of these shifts, which he studies through the examination of contrasting neighborhoods, social milieus, and institutions, as well as of individuals prominently involved with important building projects or with the general maintenance and improvement of urban facilities and infrastructure. Burroughs provides a concrete and differentiated picture of the intersection of papal/ecclesiastical and local interest and initiatives, placing this within the context of marked political changes. And he devotes extensive discussions to the artistic expression of papal agendas and concerns in Nicholas's private chapel and in Alberti's Tempio Malatestiano.

Charles Burroughs is Associate Professor of Art History at the State University of New York at Binghamton.

Contents: Urban Pattern and Symbolic Landscapes. Interior Architectures: Discordance and Resolution in the Frescoes of Nicholas's Private Chapel. Far and Near Perspectives: Urban Ordering and Neighborhood Change in Nicholan Rome. Middlemen: Lines of Contact, Mutual Advantage, and Command. The Other Rome: Sacrality and Ideology in the Holy Quarter. Mirror and Frame: The Surrounding Region and the Long Road. Epilogue: The River, the Book, and the Basilica.

There's a less-than-subtle message in the latest edition of this venerable handbook: Get wired. Join the revolution. An index to digital markets highlights those taking advantage of the latest technology; however, a helpful listing of websites is too brief, and curiously excludes any mention of such newsgroups as rec.photo.misc or alt.journalism.photo. Pulitzer prize-winning photographer Eddie Adams--in one of many "insider" interviews designed to make this annual marketing guide more accessible--applauds the creative possibilities of the new media but decries colleagues who have allowed computers to take over their minds.

5 out of 5 stars Not just a list of publications..........1999-05-14

This book has some really detailed how-to information for those submitting their photographs to various kinds of publications and organizations.

You could probably live without a copy, but not if your goal is to make a living as a photographer.

4 out of 5 stars Great reference for any photographer's library........1999-03-07

This book is a wonderful reference for beginning and experienced photographers alike. Anyone wishing to make money from his/her photography needs this book. In addition to the staggering list of markets and individual sources, this book covers basics such as copyright law, license types, taxes, etc...

Although it's not a novel, I have, on occasion found myself reading each entry page by page. It's almost a lesson in itself on what to expect from a given market, and how to approach it. An indispensable tool.

5 out of 5 stars This book gives you a choice !.......1999-03-01

This book gives you a choice of places to sell your photos to different cities and publications. You may stick to just magazines and books or choose postcards and greeting cards. This book is definately well worth it. It not only tells you where to sell and who to contact, but what to do before even thinking of submitting your photos to a particular company. To go along with this book, I also recommend Sell and Resell Your Photos by Rohn Engh. It goes wonderful with it.

                  Book Description

Written by leading authorities from Europe, the Americas and Asia, this path-breaking work develops an innovative and original theorization of global political economy. While most approaches theorize global political economy from the perspectives of power and production or states and markets, this work argues that what feminists call social reproduction is a more basic framework, upon which most forms of power and production, and states and markets, must necessarily rest.

                          Book Description

"Whether in regard to the economy or issues of war and peace, class is central to our everyday lives. Yet class has not been as visible as race or gender, not nearly as much a part of our conversations and sense of ourselves as these and other `identities.' We are of course all individuals, but our individuality and personal life chances are shaped—limited or enhanced—by the economic and social class in which we have grown up and in which we exist as adults."—from the Introduction

The contributors to this volume argue that class identity in the United States has been hidden for too long. Their essays, published here for the first time, cover the relation of class to race and gender, to globalization and public policy, and to the lives of young adults. They describe how class, defined in terms of economic and political power rather than income, is in fact central to Americans' everyday lives. What's Class Got to Do with It? is an important resource for the new field of working class studies.

4 out of 5 stars Class is power not money.......2004-06-28

This collection of essays addresses an often overlooked aspect of American culture: class. The introduction makes a good case that class is really more about power than money, but the other essays do not always pick up on this theme. The essays do cover a lot of ground, so consider it an introduction to the topic. Except for the last powerful essay by Barbara Jensen the authors of the book seem to be addressing an academic audience, and perhaps college students will get the most out of it. Jensen's essay is both personal and practical. She tells us what it's like for a working class woman in college to feel both the positive and negative effects of class. She opened the eyes of this middle class reader to see, without guilt, how the world can be viewed differently under the lens of class. Everyone, regardless of their class, has something to learn from this book.

                                Description:
This article presents a case study of academic language instruction in a high school ''English Learner Science'' course. It illustrates how a teacher's understanding of academic language affects her instruction and students' opportunities for learning. We examine a transcript of classroom discourse for the ''didactic tension'' that exists between this educator's teaching of science vocabulary and students' development of conceptual understanding in science. We assert that the teacher's emphasis on vocabulary serves to obscure important semantic relationships among the phenomena she is teaching about in her lesson, as well as ignores the linguistic resources needed to express those relationships. We propose that the social action accomplished by this didactic tension may be to produce an economy of discourse for English Learners which, contrary to the goals of academic language instruction, serves to withhold from them opportunities to not only to talk, but think, like scientists. We use our findings to call for further research into teachers' beliefs, practices, and discourse related to academic language instruction and the impact of these on students' language as well as content learning.

                                      Book Description

This is the only comprehensive account of the American victory at Plattsburgh, New York, on the shores of Lake Champlain in 1814, the first full history of one of the most decisive battles in American history.

2 out of 5 stars A Good Story Poorly Told.......2006-04-03

The story of Lt. Gen. Sir George Prevost's 1814 Lake Champlain offensive, and how it was thwarted by Commodore Thomas Macdonough's squadron in an improbable naval battle fought within the confines of Plattsburgh Bay, is certainly worth telling. Unfortunately, Col. Fitz-Enz tells it rather poorly here. He has presented some interesting, new information which he obtained from Sir George's descendants - including the so-called "secret orders" for the campaign - but his book is neither particularly well organized nor particularly well written. It contains many factual and technical errors, as well as not a few gramatical and even spelling errors that should have been caught by even a cursory job of editing.
The principal value of the book is to rescue an important chapter of American history from ill-deserved obscurity for readers who otherwise might never have heard of it. Perhaps it will inspire more careful historians and more capable writers to more competently address the same topic.

5 out of 5 stars History with a Sense of Humor.......2002-11-11

Colonel Fitz-Enz has demonstrated an uncanny knack of combining the historical with the humorous. War isn't funny, of course, but small tactical events with editorial comments make for an excellent and interesting book. The book also shows how very close the US came to losing it all. An excellent read.

3 out of 5 stars Decent History of a Little Known Campaign.......2002-08-15

The author clearly did his homework before writing this account
of the 1814 British/Canadian attack on Plattsburgh, NY. Had it
succeeded, things might look differently today in terms of U.S. territory and we would have another humiliating defeat to look back on.
The events leading up to the combined land/sea battle are well laid out and the battle itself is described in rousing detail, particularly the bloody Naval conflict on Lake Champlain. All the events in the book are also put into perspective with the invasion of Washington DC and Baltimore which was part of a recently discovered British grand strategy.
A few minor omissions and errors keep the book from being great history but don't hurt the overall narrative too badly. The newly discovered Prevost papers ( he was C.O. of the invasion and Governor of Canada ) lend new light on the subject but seem to have biased the author toward Prevost. Prevost was overly cautious in his approach and abandoned a partly successful attack with a huge numerical superiority at Plattsbugh. Worse still, he abandoned supplies and equipment in a hasty withdrawal which was not pursued. The author goes to some length to justify this even the Prevost was court martialed for it.
The Niagra Campaign on the other side of N.Y. state is not mentioned at all despite the mistaken withdrawal from Plattsburgh of most of the U.S. regulars to fight in it. The author also errs in reffering to the Royal Americans as the 62nd foot- they were known as the 60th for most of their career and also gives the imppresion that the Washington DC invasion force suffered much fewer battle casualties than in an accidental explosion. This is untrue, read "by Dawn's Early Light" by Lord to get a good picture of this battle.
Overall, other than omitting the Niagra campaign, these are minor quibbles that don't lessen the fact that this is a well written history of a neglected chapter in American History and a great victory by American arms during a dark hour.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Final Invasion.......2002-08-05

I bought the book because it won the Distinguished Writing Award. Different from any other history book I have read because it is written from the British prospective more than the victors. Easy to get through,it tells a story that I have never heard before. How did I miss this important event in our country's history? To think that we were attacked on September the 11th once before. If we had lost this one, we could have lost it all.
It is a must read for every American.
