German Architectural Theory and the Search for Modern Identity

This book presents for the first time in English an overview of the theoretical debates on architecture in nineteenth-century Austria and Germany. Drawing on a vast number of writings by architects, historians, philosophers and critics, Mitchell Schwarzer offers an exhaustive history of the principal debates on style, industry, nationalism, iron technology, and artistic expression, all of which inform modern architecture. He argues that the history of architecture in the modern era cannot be explained according to the simple evolution or progression of structural, functional, or artistic forces. Rather, he establishes modernity as a series of debates on the parameters of architectural knowledge itself and the identity of the architectural profession in a rapidly industrialising world. Describing theory through its conflicts and unresolved questions, Schwarzer uncovers the complex nature of modern pluralism, one that is still relevant in the late twentieth century.

This book examines poetic adaptations of painterly techniques in works by writers such as Guillaume Apollinaire, Pierre Reverdy, Andre Breton, Frank O'Hara, and John Ashbery--all chosen both for the experimentalism of their poetry and for the quality of their critical writings on art. Close attention is paid to essays on painters identified with Cubism, Futurism, and Dada-Surrealism in France and with Abstract Expressionism and New Realism in the United States. Selected poems are examined in light of the critical essays and are taken either as illustrations of a new plastic poetic or as novel hybrids of plastic and literary strategies. Although the parallels between modern poetry and painting go beyond avant-garde techniques, this book emphasizes such innovations as collage, chance operations, and automatism to demonstrate the shift in aesthetic attention from finished products to creative processes.

At the second district police station, black faces among the white reveal that in 1878 racial integration had come -- temporarily -- to the nation's capital. (Sixty-five years later, marchers would demand the hiring of black bus drivers to help win the "fight against fascism.") At the Treasury Department in 1910, men in white shirts work as engravers while women count the newly printed currency; in an adjacent photo, a lone black man bends over a washtub in the "Cuspidor Washing and Sterilizing Room" of the Capitol.

Everywhere in these photographs is a richness of detail that captures a bygone moment with startling precision. Ancient tools and pipes surround a workman in the "plumbing room" somewhere in the depths of the Capitol. A pair of young girls stand, smiling, in a Depression-era back alley, every brick and paving stone sharp and clear. Assembly line workers in an eerily lighted loft peer out from behind a row of artificial limbs. A boy leans down for a better look at the well-stocked candy counter of a black-owned grocery store.

Here are Washingtonians at home and at work, at restaurant tables and lunch counters, in schools and churches, dancing the jitterbug and going to the movies, cheering the Redskins, the Senators, and the Homestead Greys. In the accompanying text, Miller and Gillette invite readers to enter into an intimate "conversation with the past," offering insightful commentary on the images of people whose faces cannot fail to captivate.

A Must Read.......1999-12-23

This is a must read for anyone who would like a deeper understanding of the Philippines. In my 8 years in Manila, I had the opportunity to travel extensively and frequently throughout the island nation. While I appreciate the wonders and potentials of the country I have seen its darker perimeters in many forms. Don Kirk has done a masterful job of research and reporting. There are of course two sides to everything and, when it involves Asia, it is difficult for the casual or transient observer to see beyond what they believe they understand. Author/Correspondent Don Kirk is clearly not a casual transient observer.

Good review of the Philippines and its epidemic corruption........1998-12-27

As an American who has lived in the Philippines for 20 years, I enjoyed the author's, Mr Kirk's, rendition of the background to and events attending the US military's turnover of the bases to the Philippine government. The looting that took place around Clark AFB was blatant and horrendous and the author did justice to the facts. One of the sources that Mr Kirk used was a friend of mine, Frank Hilliard. Mr Kirk borrowed the "History of Camp John Hay" (by Laubenthal) from Hilliard and did not return this book, which is long out of print and impossible to replace. Mr Hilliard therefore requests that the Mr Kirk return the book forthwith, c/o the Hotel where he met and interviewed Mr Hilliard.
