Muy bueno. Very good........2007-10-02

Product Description
This Elibron Classics book is a facsimile reprint of a 1865 edition by Longman, Green, Longman, Roberts, & Green, London.
Book Description
For nearly fifty years, the Popeil Brothers' and Ronco's high-energy commercials have been familiar intruders into the living rooms of America-and most homes bear evidence of their seductive visits. Countless VegOMatics, SealAMeals, Kitchen Magicians, Pocket Fishermen, and other gadgets sit tucked away in many a cupboard, giving silent testimony to the power of their broadcast salesmanship. This dynamic, colorful, and amusing volume tells the classic rags to riches story of this fascinating business whose name has become synonymous with the word "gadget." Through a witty, informative text complemented by a wealth of colorful vintage advertisements, stunning product package art, and photography that cooks, business students, graphic and industrial design mavens, and fans of popular culture will love, this book examines the inventiveness and ubiquity of Popeil products through a range of special visual and editorial features. These include: an encapsulated history of the company; annotated celbycel recreations of the most popular commercials; amusing anecdotes about the inventions; transcripts of the alluring, rapidfire sales pitches; humorous quotes; and entertaining facts.
Just like the inventions themselves, this volume is "amazing!"

A walk down memory lane viewing the many O'Matics........2006-11-28
The commercials were furious in the speed of their delivery and at least a few decibels louder than the shows they sponsored. Each of them pitched one or more "inexpensive" gadgets that were "guaranteed" to make some task in your life simpler. The products they demonstrated were "Ronco" and "Popeil", and they still resonate through my long-term memory decades after they ceased to be aired. And I also must confess that I did buy a few of their products to use as Christmas gifts.
The late, great Johnny Carson used the commercials as a model for his "Art Fern" character on the "Tonight" show. His beautiful sidekick Carol Wayne made him appear even funnier because she was so soft and sedate compared to his hyperkinetic delivery.
This book is the story of the people who created the products and what the products were. Without question, the highlights of the book are the pictures of the products and the captions explaining them. Starting on page 51 you see
*) The Chop-O-Matic
*) The Dial-O-Matic
*) The Veg-O-Matic
*) The Corn-O-Matic
*) The Mince-O-Matic
*) The Peel-O-Matic
*) The Whip-O-Matic
Ah, the memories this brings back!
However, my favorite gadget of all is the "Popeil Sit-On Trash Compactor." It is exactly what the name implies. You placed a garbage bag in the device and then when it was full, you literally sat on a plunger that compressed the garbage. No electricity was needed, just a hard and ample behind.
If you were old enough to understand television in the late sixties and seventies, then you could not have avoided seeing the "Ronco" and "Popeil" commercials. Reading this book is a way to travel back in time and revisit some of the most amusing pop culture and commercialism of the era.
Read it for what it is........2006-02-15
I see that many reviewers, rather than reviewing the book, are choosing this forum to indict Ron Popeil. Let me preface by saying that I am NOT a blubbering couch potato who buys any gadget that is zestfully presented on an infomercial. In fact, most of them drive me nuts. That being said, I cannot bring myself to say anything disparaging about Ron Popeil. He is who he is, a gifted inventor and a charismatic salesman.
The publisher's review makes reference to gadgets sitting silently in a closet. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. I still use my Pocket Fisherman I bought in the '60s. My Showtime Rotisserie cooks delicious meals for my family. And although better tools have come along since, even my Veg-O-Matic served a long and useful life. I have Ron's knives and while they are not the pretentious (and expensive) "French Chef" knives my daughter has, they stay sharp and are very utilitarian. I could go on, but suffice to say that EVERY one of Ron's products has worked as advertised and are as robust as advertised. That is not to say that every gadget Ron invented or improved was a great idea (e.g. egg scrambler), but he had the will and nerve to make them and put them out there. This is no small feat, as any inventor or developer will tell you.
But then, this IS about the book, isnt it? The author did perhaps used a little literary license when crediting Ron. But, like BASF, even if he didn't originate all these ideas, he MADE THEM BETTER! I found the book to be a welecome walk down memory lane. It was well laid out and informative. Don't pick this book apart when you read it. Look to it rather for the entertainment value, much as many of us look to Ron's infomercials.
A funky look back.......2004-07-09
This bright and colorful book is a great, easy read and guaranteed to make the reader smile. (or your money back?) It doesn't pretend to be anything more than it is....a look at the enormous success of the Popeil family over many decades and the dozens of products associated with them. The star, of course, is Ron Popeil and when I see him on a TV infomercial hawking the Showtime Rotisserie he ALMOST makes be believe I should buy one.
The author, Timothy Samuelson, introduces the Popeil family and neither minces words about the inter-family problems nor the bankruptcy Ronco was forced into in 1984. Yet, this book is really a walk down memory lane for those of us old enough to remember the chop-o-matic and the veg-o-matic. The book's illustrations (mostly photos and drawings of past products) are terrific and my only real criticism is the use of annoyingly small narrative print.
Lastly, "But, Wait! There's More!" is a testament to the staying power of Ron Popeil. An ingenious inventor, he has re-invented himself many times over....and he's still out there trying to convince us (...)
Popeil the truth stretcher!.......2003-03-16
Popeil surely has a place in gadgetmania history, but to take credit for the work of others is an insult to the reader. Most TV gurus know that even the title " but wait theres more " is the work of the GINSU Guys. If we can't even believe the title, perhaps we shouldn't trust much after we open it. Despite Ron's attempt to take credit for just about everything except the discovery of the polio shot, I found this book amusing. But only if I were to buy it from " Buck a book"
The story of the O-Matic boys........2002-12-21
An interesting, visually exuberant, book about Ronco and the Popeil family. Essentially the book is a twenty-four page essay by author Samuelson with the remainder of the pages taken up with pictures and captions describing the various products they sold on TV.
Samuelson writes a rather sympathetic history of the Popeil's and the bizarre collection of household wares they pitched to gullible consumers, who can forget the 'inside-the-shell egg scrambler' (1978) or the 'GLH formula number 9 hair system' (1992) most likely everyone who bought them. He also writes that the products had 'unusually high quality product design', looking through the photos of the products this judgement seems way over-the-top. Still, folks bought this stuff by the million thanks to Ron Popeil's excellent marketing hype and fast pitched delivery. This came about because the FCC limited TV commercials to two minutes or less and the Popeil's had honed their pitch for the Veg-O-Matic (1956) to four minutes and could not bear to leave anything out so the only answer was to speak faster.
I was surprised by the design of the book, square in shape with three large circular holes in the cover (they reveal three photos on the first page) and pages of product photos, vintage ads, stills from TV commercials, colored panels and text all mixed up but in a nicely controlled way. There is an index in the back. But, wait! There's more, although this book concentrates on Ronco and the Popeil's you can see a whole load more (dubious) TV advertised products in 'As Seen On TV' by Lou Harry and Sam Stall.
Don't forget, never say battery operated, it's cordless electric. Isn't that amazing!

Awesome reference book with real strategies that work!.......1998-06-30
This is a great reference book for anyone considering part-time and even for those that are already doing it. I have worked both part-time and in a job-share and this topic is a passion of mine. I find the information in the book helpful, accurate, objective and well-balanced. It's presented in a positive fashion - not like an unrealisic fantasy - more like "if you want it bad enough you can get it, but you need to be persistent, open-minded and creative - and here are some strategies that really work." The book spans different industries and professions, which brings even more ideas to the table. The interviews and real life experiences are both inspiring and comforting.

Excellent Book on Stress related depression.......2006-02-28
This book accurately describes those most at risk from stress-related depression.
In contrast to many books on depression, this text takes the view that those most susceptible to depression are people with strong personalities. Being naturally conscientious and reliable, they tend to carry on under great stress, where weaker people would simply give up. In the end the burden becomes too much and they succumb to depression rather like a rubber band which will snap if stretched too far. The work attempts to explain the cause of depression and how it can be treated - by looking after yourself, antidepressant treatments and talking therapies.
An excellent book and, unlike many on this subject, is not based on some crack-pot personal theory, but simply sensible advice that will be compatible with your medical treatments.

CONFEDERATE NAVAL HISTORY AT ITS BEST .......2007-10-04
THE NAME STILL IS A SURE FIRE GUIDE TO GOOD WRITING OF GOOD HISTORY. THIS BOOK ELEVATES HIS REPUTATION. THERE ARE A NUMBER OF OTHER WORKS ON THE IRON CLADS BUT THIS GIVES A CONCISE AND VERY READABL ACCOUNT OF THE BUILDING OF THESE WSHIPS IN A CONFEDERACY STRAPPED FOR CASH, MEN ND MATERIAL.
THIS BOOK SATISFIES THE NAVAL CONSTRUCTION ENTHUSIAST, THE READER INTERESTED IN THE PERSONALITIES INVOLVED, AND THE HISTORIAN OF THE CONFEDERACY. A GREAT READ FOR EVERY HISTORIAN AND ADVENTURIST.
Great narrative of confederate armorclad naval history.......2007-09-19
In this 1971 study, author William N. Still, Jr. recounts and analyzes the brief history of the homebuilt Confederate ironclad fleet.
Dr. Still provides a fine review of the military and political settings that led to the strategic naval programs of both sides. He then proceeds with a mostly sequential retelling of the ironclad history in each theater/region.
The author seems fair in his treatment of the principals and of both efforts. One can't help but recognize the demoralizing loss of the early ironclads after a promising start. The early program included ironclads that were intended to be seaworthy. But after the loss of all the early ironclads, the domestic strategy transitioned to construction of harbor/river defense vessels rather than oceangoing vessels.
The book reveals a chaotic naval building program operating under great adversity. Distributed construction programs, lack of time, labor, iron and plate were key recurring problems, but so were poor design and horrendous mechanical issues. Most ironclads were never completed due to lack of time and resources. Of those that were, few could achieve reasonable speeds or had other insurmountable problems. Several, such as the CSS Georgia, Tuscaloosa, and Huntsville, ended up serving as floating batteries. The propulsion was so weak or poorly designed that these-like the CSS Louisiana-could not even hold their ground in moderate current. The CSS Mississippi would have almost definitely suffered the same fate had it been completed.
With inevitable, foreseeable battle damage (such as riddled or missing stack) even the best were nearly crippled. Engine or steering failure contributed to the loss of some of the most storied boats including the CSS Tennessee and CSS Arkansas.
Dr. Still reviews how costly engineering errors prevented a few vessels from ever rendering effective service. The CSS Jackson (Muscogee) drew too deep a draft as a paddle wheeler and had to be rebuilt with a screw. The CSS Columbia was so structurally deficient that she failed after striking a snag, breaking her back. The CSS Louisiana's two in-line paddlewheels and screws were so inefficient that they made her both unsteerable and unable to resist the current under her own power. Another problem was green lumber and unsheathed hulls: the CSS North Carolina sank at her moorings due to a worm-eaten bottom.
To be fair, the US Navy's ironclad program had its share of engineering fiascoes, but it could afford far more mistakes than the resource strapped Confederacy. Despite many painful failures, losses, and waste, the CSN ironclads created great problems for the US Navy, and at times for the US Army.
The Confederate casemate ironclads did have some advantages compared to monitors. The angled shields could deflect a harder blow than vertical surfaces such as the center of a monitor turret. The CS Navy's Brooke rifles with wrought iron projectiles had more potential for piercing armor than the cast iron shot from the heavy smoothbores of the monitors. The larger casemate rams tended to be able to bring several times more guns to bear and maintain a higher rate of fire, and monitor turrets were susceptible to jamming due to battle damage. However, the key selling point of the casemate was that the CSA possessed the means of building them, while at the time more mechanically complex designs were infeasible for the CSA from a manufacturing and maintenance standpoint.
Unlike William Still's "Confederate Ship Building" which was too brief, this narrative's text is 231 pages, including seven maps and eighteen other illustrations. Following the text are a helpful bibliographic essay, bibliography, and an index.
This is a great reference and interesting read for those trying to understand the role and history of the CS ironclads. (Note that this does not include foreign built armored vessels such as the Laird rams or the CSS Stonewall.)
The standard of Confederate Naval history of the Civil War.......2001-01-03
W.N.Still's book is rightfully called the standard of Confederate Naval history. Accurate and objective accounts of the major and most minor engagements with Union forces are combined with extensive background information. The newer editions have an enlarged section of historical drawings and sketches. Mr. Still explains the political background that gave rise to the Confederate Ironclad program and his research is impeccable. An exhaustive literature listing rounds out this excellent book. While strictly scientific the inclusion of historical eyewitness accounts and the always fluent style make this book a joy to read. This book is a great starting point and goes very well with Maurice Melton's more subjective and somewhat dated book on the same subject. Also very interesting to compare with Ivan Musicant's 'Divided Waters'.
A must for every Civil War student!
Customer Reviews:
at the time, almost a masterpiece of political analys.......2001-01-07
Satin, who now edits an extraordinary political newsletter out of DC, made his first stab in this book at a "grand scale" assessment of what ails the human species. More importantly, he made a valiant attempt to understand how a new person-centered and planetary-conscious politics could heal the damaged psyche and stimulate creative action. And he descibed, in some detail, what that politics would look like. The book was so potent that a political movement began to form around it, taking shape in the New World Alliance. While Satin might be embarrased today to read what he considered then to be the "essence of politics", it is still a pretty powerful document worth reviewing for some potent ideas applicable to our precarious situation today.
