Re-Thinking Green is published by The Independent Institute, which claims its "program adheres to the highest standards of independent inquiry and is pursued regardless of political or social biases and conventions." The reader, therefore, hopes for a balanced and varied discussion of environmental policy and government regulation. Re-Thinking Green, however, turns out to be a series of articles by anti-regulatory ideologues that are variations (with only the slightest variation) on a theme. The theme? Regulation is bad. Market is good.

It is not difficult to take pot shots at regulatory failures and bureaucratic stupidity -- its child's play really. But the authors of Re-thinking Green seem to have worked themselves into such an anti-government frenzy that they cannot see straight. Having concluded that regulation equals damnation and markets equal salvation, the authors were generally not inconvenienced by half the facts. Every scenario became an argument for more market and less market interference. The Independent Institute should be known as the INDEPENDENT FROM ANY KIND OF MARKET INTERFERENCE INSTITUTE. Read this book and you will get one side (and therefore a lopsided view) of the regulation vs. market debate.

If you are looking for a book with balance and depth start with Everything For Sale by Robert Kuttner. Kuttner's book discusses both the virtues and limits of markets. Unlike Re-Thinking Green, Everything For Sale truly is an "independent inquiry pursued regardless of political or social biases and conventions."

For thirty years, labor unions have been in a slump. Private sector membership has eroded steadily and dramatically. Hostility toward unions among politicians and the general public has increased. Economic globalization, new technology, and changes in the workplace have compounded the resistance of employers to unions. Unions face substantial legal obstacles when attempting to organize and then gain an initial contract with employers. And, in some unions, scandals continue to obscure reform efforts. Recently, the Twentieth Century Fund/Century Foundation convened a task force of business executives, labor leaders, academics, and others who care about the well-being of the American workforce to reconsider the future of unions. Under the chairmanship of former Ohio Governor Richard Celeste, the task force explored provocative questions: Are labor unions outmoded anachronisms? Or do they have the capacity to revitalize themselves and regain an important role in the U.S. economy and political system?

This book argues that labor unions have proven to be the only consistently effective mechanism for enabling workers to express their concerns and exert significant influence in the workplace. It also documents the extent to which unions have benefited not only members, but the workforce as a whole. The report also includes a variety of new ideas for regaining membership, rebuilding public popularity, developing greater flexibility in the workplace, and shaping government policy.

In keeping with their mission of examining economic and political issues and policies, The Century Foundation convened a task force of labor union officials, industrial relations academics, lawyers, businessmen, and others to analyze the "grim" slide of labor unions from representing thirty-five percent of the U.S. workforce a half-century ago to barely fourteen percent at the end of the twentieth century. As might be suspected, the nonpartisanship of the Foundation and the differing perspectives of the task force members resulted in rather limited, even inconsequential, findings as to what direction the labor movement should take to reverse their slide.

This report established the unremarkable finding that unions at sufficient density raise members pay relative to the non-unionized segment, reduce the possibility of extreme pay differentials, increase the rate of health insurance and pension coverage, and tend to increase political participation. Of course, the task force uniformly agreed that unions need to rebound to continue to receive these benefits. One of several side recommendations calls for unions to strategically organize through targeting organizable sectors, to consolidate unions, to promote unions as assets in high-performance workplaces, to ally with their global counterparts, and to raise labor's voice on behalf of all working people. The task force fails to mention that the labor movement has considerably stepped up these efforts over the last few years with quite modest results.

Other members focused on labor laws and their interpretation by courts and the National Labor Relations Board as a major hurdle for unions to overcome to organize new members. The basic labor law of the land permits employers to dominate the process by which workers supposedly are free to choose who will represent them. Under the current legal regime, employers can use both coercive and illegal tactics to prevent the establishment of a union with little concern for punitive measures being taken against them.

But there is no chance that the legal situation will change for unions and working people unless a wholesale transformation occurs in public thinking; there simply will be no political mandate. A task force member, Nelson Lichtenstein, declares that "trade unions will need to engineer a political and cultural breakthrough that sways the hearts and minds of millions and millions of people who today see the unions as irrelevant, or even hostile, to their interests." A "classwide insurgency" will be required.

Lichtenstein also presents a background article on the labor movement since the 1930s. It is clear that through the vehicle of labor unions a sizeable portion of the working class gained substantial economic and political citizenship. But equally clear is the fact that the labor movement facilitated those gains at considerable costs. Labor unions were expected to police their memberships in accordance with the provisions of collective bargaining agreements and to eliminate class-based militancy from within their ranks. In an era of an alleged labor-management accord, the labor movement lost the social and political power necessary to respond to the various forces that became seriously arrayed against them by the mid-1970s. The slide has been continuous since that time. A more complete picture of the slide of unions is available in Lichtenstein's recent book: "State of the Union."

This task force as a whole was unwilling to squarely admit that class warfare has occurred in the U.S. over the last thirty years and that the working class lost and is losing. Organizing a few pockets of workers here and there, coordinating with some foreign labor bodies, and running slick political ads do not constitute a labor turnaround. The working class must adopt stances of militancy, insurgency, and participatory democracy to even think about turning around their situation. But beyond isolated cases of such resolve, there is virtually no evidence that a significant revival is even remotely imminent.

I got this book without concluding that if Dr. Ruth cowrote it it would have to be focused on sexual intimacy. While sexual intimacy and gratification are thoroughly discussed, there is much more to the book (and to sex by the way).
All women and couples need to remember their sexuality during pregnancy and prepare for the changes that pregnancy and parenthood will bring. You can't expect to take sex out of a marraige and pick up a year later exactly where you left off. So many couples complain about how having a baby ruins their sex life or puts a major strain on it but it doesn't have to be that way if you are prepared!
This advice is so important it is shameful that hardly any pregnnacy books address these issues. This book has the best advice on nutrition I have found in any of the more mainstream and popular pregnancy books I have read. It is even better than what I have heard from Dr.s and midwives who only seem to have vague or terribly rigid and unscientific biases about nutrition.
This comprehensive book is very medical and takes you from preconception to labor. The most beautiful thing about it is the importance and validation it places on the couple who are growing into a new life stage together as parents.

Most pregnancy books provide you with dry and boring information. This book co-written by the famous Dr.Ruth with Dr.Grunebaum, a New York ObGyn, provides you with refreshing and medically accurate information. It's different than other books because it addresses issues that other books won't even talk about like sexual positions, masturbation, and orgasm. Highly recommended.

Less about sex, more about how to be a patient.......2000-04-08

I bought this book in hopes of finding discussion of various positions for sex during pregnancy, coupled with emotional information and guidance about sexuality. While there is a bit of that information, the bulk of the information in the book is how to be a good OB patient. With line drawings of episiotomies, forceps deliveries, and a few dismissive paragraphs on home birthing and other birthing alternatives, Drs. Westheimer and Grunebaum strive to keep women in the dark about the culmination of the sexual act: the birth itself. If you need help in choosing an anesthesiologist or deciding which surgical procedure should be performed on you at birth, then buy this book. If you're looking for good information on intimacy during pregnancy, keep looking.

Not bad, but certainly not the best.......1999-12-23

After having read "The Unofficial Guide To Having A Baby", this book just didn't compare. In only the first few chapters, there were references to "hanging from the chandelier"! I admit, the idea of that was funny, but not what I was looking for at that particular point in time. And things such as that caused me to lose interest in this book - and fast! The "Unofficial Guide" mentioned above is a much better, more informative book in my opinion. Dr. Ruth's was so/so, but as I said - NOT THE BEST.

Throw away "What to Expect .....".......1999-09-01

Everyone, I mean, everyone buys "What to expect when you are expecting" for pregnancy. But have you ever read it? Well, I have, and I have read Dr.Ruth's book, too. And Dr.Ruth has really "done it", so to speak. Clear, concise, to the point. With enough pictures to get the point across. Pregnancy can be fun again.

If you want to find out what a tremendous event was all about--famine, pestilence, war--read the poems written about it. Ever since Homer, or the book of Judges, war poems have been written to tell us what happened, to whom, why. Richard Marius's fine selection, with his introduction to it, opens today's reader to the Civil War's horror, pathos, loss, and the emotions which are easy to forget, or worse still, to romanticize. It's a broad selection, from "John Brown's Body" and "Dixie" to today's meditations, in Derek Walcott's "Arkansas Testament," on the legacy of hostility toward blacks, North and South: the Civil War, to Walcott, is still to be won. We purchased this for our 4 year old daughter and our whole family has learned a great deal about birds! The book is simple yet informative for the beginning bird enthusiast. The birdfeeder stays on the window well UNTIL squirrels try to climb in it. It is very difficult to keep squirrels out of this kind of feeder - they are tenacious and quite agile. Buy a copy of Outwitting Squirrels by Bill Adler if you want to contend with them. We have given this book and feeder as a birthday present to adults and children and everyone has loved it. Great price and quality.

I am in no way an expert birdwatcher, but this book and birdfeeder are so much fun to use. Like another reviewer, I was skeptical of birds actually coming to the feeder. In less than a week, they had not only found it, but were fighting to get inside it! The book is small, but well written and very informative for all ages, especially if you know very little about birdwatching. It makes the common birds you will see easy to identify. The feeder is great because it can be attached to a window pane, making up-close viewing possible from inside your house.

I purchased this book just after my son was born. I saw it in a flyer I received in the mail and thought it would be a great educational experience for my son to see the birds right outside of our window. Not long after he turned 2, I installed it on our living room window. A few days went by and I was afraid the birds weren't going to visit it. Boy, was I wrong! They absolutely love it! It is not the only birdfeeder that I have, but it certainly is most popular. The smaller birds absolutely adore it. In bad weather, they hop right inside and eat and sit a spell. It has brought much joy to our family. My son thinks everyone sees birds up close and doesn't realize what a gift this is!

If you are looking for flat black and white pictures of birds held by a person's hand with uninspired prose accompanying the bad pictures, this is the book for you.
