Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A good book for the beginner........2002-02-14

This book is a good book for the beginning woodworker, or someone who wants to make a few frames for their photos.

It offers step by step instruction for building standard mitred frames, cutting mats and glass, and construction techniques.

If you want to simply make some traditional frames this book will definitely help you out.

On the down side the book hasn't been updated since 1958 and as such it's woefully out of date. It uses and describes all hand tools, some of which are not even available any longer.

There is no information about the benefits of a power mitre saw, radial arm saw, or any other power tool which would greatly help in making frames.

Additionally I was hoping that the book would outline some non traditional frames, such as mortice and tenon jointed frames. It did not, only standard mitred frames.

Overall I would recommend this book for someone totally unfamiliar with frame making. But if you have a basic understanding of woodworking and understand mitre cuts then this isn't the book for you.

3 out of 5 stars How to Make Your Own Picture Frames.......2000-04-07

Excellent book for the beginner (me!). Clear and concise. Excellent step-by-step instructions with photos for each and every step. This book covers all aspects of frame construction, painting, mats, glass-cutting and usage. A great book to trigger your own ideas to create custom frames.

Drawbacks: Original publication is 1958, and the tools and techniques used are pretty old (e.g., use of a hand saw and miter box versus an electric miter saw or radial arm saw). Photos are all black and white, so some detail is missing.

                            Book Description

The Legacy of Wildness: The Photographs of Robert Glenn Ketchum is the first major retrospective of a world-renowned landscape photographer whose artistry is equaled only by his commitment to the environment.

To activist photographer Robert Glenn Ketchum, art and advocacy go hand in hand. Whether depicting the rugged grandeur of the American countryside or the mournful beauty of virgin wilderness violated by progress, his landscapes reject sentimentality. Instead, they document his deep respect and compassion for our irreplaceable natural resources.

With a preface by Robert Redford and an essay by distinguished ecologist and author John Perlin, The Legacy of Wildness is a work of great innovation and integrity.

                              Book Description

The blood-shot and maniac grinning face on the front cover (by Mark Gibbons) leaves no doubt as to the content of this supplement. As part of the same series as the previously released Fir Domain, The Sessair is packed full of history, background and good solid game information designed to expand the characters of any player who hails from this tribe. The supplement kicks off with the History and Traditions of the Sessair including their myths, methods for choosing kings and the place of war-wives among the fighting men (alternately hurling abuse and compliments, they encourage their men to fight to ever greater degrees). Known as the Tribe That Stands Up, there are few that can stand in the way of a determined Sessair. The Tribe That Stands Up chapter covers new options for characters born into the tribe, and so will be eagerly devoured by players of the Slaine RPG. Character concepts, first introduced within the Fir Domain now include the Hermit, Mediator, Ideal Warrior, Swan, Wanderer, Hunter, Cattle Rustler, Murias Fisher, Plains Chariot Racer, Rath Grainne Noble and Devotee of Epona. Magic of the Sessair details new spells available to anyone, though they all originated with this tribe and are most commonly used in its lands. They range from the peaceful Sign of the Salmon to the rather gruesome Preserve Head - always useful in blessings. The supplement is polished off with Sessair Reference Tables, giving the GM a ready range of characters (such as a Red Branch Warrior or Headman) to use at a moment's notice or as the basis of a detailed NPC.

                                  Book Description

Russian Banking considers the rise of commercial market-oriented banks in Russia, their links with government and non-financial companies and their role as intermediaries in the provision of finance for investment.

The contributors explore the legacy of the Soviet past and current functions of the Russian banking system, contrasting these with those in other post-communist societies and describing peculiarities such as informal networks and corruption.

The book also discusses the economic and global aspects of Russia's reform, focusing on financial crises, foreign depositors to Russian banks and the implications for Russian foreign debt.

This up-to-date and comprehensive account of commercial banking in modern Russia will appeal to those concerned with the economics of transition or comparative banking. Political scientists and sociologists with an interest in forms of capitalism and the roles of banks will also find the book to be a fascinating read.

                                        Book Description

For two hundred years, the economic engine of capitalism helped make the United States a nation where almost anyone willing to take initiative, work hard, and save money could lead a comfortable life, raise a family, and assume an active role in the community. Since the 1970s, however, a gulf has opened between the wages of low-paid workers and those of the middle class. With this decline in their reward, workers' job attachment has weakened, thus reducing employment. The entitlements of the welfare state have magnified the effect. The effects in turn on crime rates, drug abuse, and other indicators of social breakdown are costly for everyone.

Edmund Phelps underscores the importance of earning a respectable wage to foster self-worth and responsibility. He shows that earning such a wage has been increasingly hard for those at the low end of the wage distribution as productivity has come to rely more on knowledge and skills and less on brawn and hard work. A crucial task for our economic and political system, Phelps asserts, is to devise methods to help less productive workers draw a reasonable wage, thereby reintegrating them into the economic mainstream. Phelps's solution is a graduated schedule of subsidies to enterprises for every low-wage worker they employ. As firms hired more of these workers, the labor market would tighten and pay levels would rise. Ultimately the program would be largely self-financing, because its cost would be offset by reductions in the cost of welfare, crime, and medical care--as well as by formerly unemployed workers who would then pay taxes.

Rewarding Work is an essay on what could be called economic engineering--in this case, the engineering of wage structures to help low-wage American workers achieve self-sufficiency and self-respect.

Since the 1970s a gulf has opened between the pay of low-paid workers and the pay of the middle class. No longer able to earn a decent wage in respectable work, many have left the labor force, and the job attachment of those remaining has weakened. For Edmund Phelps, this is a failure of political economy whose widespread effects are undermining the free-enterprise system. His solution is a graduated schedule of tax subsidies to enterprises for every low-wage worker they employ. As firms hire more of these workers, the labor market would tighten, driving up their pay levels as well as their employment.

                                              Book Description

This compendium provides an orientation to basic issues of child and family policy. It includes an overview of the recent history of child and family policy in the United States; an exploration of several political economic conditions underlying changes in these policies; a historical survey of policies toward "dependent" children; and case studies of selected local, state, and federal policies. The case study approach helps to discern patterns in successful and unsuccessful policies, clarify assumptions and values that underlie them, and develop evaluation criteria. Policy formation is the focus in analyses of the federal Family and Medical Leave Act; family support initiatives in Kentucky, Missouri, and Maryland; and municipal policies for homeless families in Atlanta, Denver, and Seattle. Examinations of the federal "Baby Doe" regulations and AIDS education policy in the Cambridge, Massachusetts, public schools highlight policy implementation. An account of the Massachusetts Day Care Partnership Project concentrates on the third phase of policy analysis: policy evaluation. The concluding chapters stress the importance of considering race, class, and gender in defining social problems, setting policy agendas, and structuring and evaluating policies and programs. They then provide an analytic framework for assessing future responsibilities for U.S. child and family policy.
