Inside Architecture is a concise, insightful examination of the role the modernist project has played in late twentieth-century building, as well as an attempt to reconcile the dilemmas and shortcomings of modern orthodoxy with a renewed vision of modernism.
Since the 1950s, Vittorio Gregotti has constructed a critical position that is probably without peer among practicing architects. Through his experiments with the neo- avant-gardes in 1963, his editorship of Casabella from 1982 to 1995, and his teaching, practice, and writing, Gregotti's voice has influenced almost every recent architectural debate. Inside Architecture, his first major work to be translated into English, balances a series of architectual themes concerning the theoretical debate surrounding modernism and tradition with the more practical affairs of the architect.
Gregotti first identifies the elements of mass culture and public institutions that have led to the deterioration of natural and man-made environments. He then investigates eight issues -- precision, technique, monumentality, modification, atopia, simplicity, procedure, and image -- that influence the activities of contemporary architects. Gregotti is particularly suspicious of the deconstructivist argument and its heavy reliance on literary models. And he provides an incisive critique of the recent interest in modernist aesthetics, warning against reviving the forms of an old movement without considering the cultural and social criteria that once gave it purpose and meaning.

Great book with the boldness of the simple. Calm and conscientious analysis of architecture today and it's commitment to history and the profession. One of the best books of criticism that I have ever read.

Common sense help.......2006-10-03
If you haven't updated your resume in awhile this text offers a number of updated formats and ideas. It includes excellent common sense check lists and strategies. The key to this book is that it emphasizes that you are selling yourself in your cover letter and resume and offers clear ways to do so. Overall I found it easy to read and implement.
Quite a Few "Starters".......2006-08-08
While I wouldn't say every resume in this book is top-notch, there are many of them that are quite well done. Two in my specific area of expertise gave me the "boost" to make my own resume look much better. I would say this book is definitely worth it if you find your resume not getting the response you had hoped for even though your skills are up-to-date.
There's also quite a lot of writing on how to position yourself better on your resume and in your cover letter. While a lot of this information is available on the Internet (and a few of the resources are outdated), it is handy to have it all together in this package as a "reinforcement."
Overall, worth a pickup if you feel stuck in your job hunt.

There are more typos per page than any book I have ever read. What happened to proof-reading? What happened to paragragh structure....topic sentence, supporting sentences? If the author has ideas to present, they are mostly lost, awash in grammatical errors. The Publisher "Publish America" has done a disservice to author and reader alike. The book is such a disjointed mess, it's hard to tell if this author has any ability at all. I can recall reading books of all sorts that I didn't like, for whatever the reason. But I can't ever recall reading a book which left me thinking;I'VE BEEN RIPPED OFF. I WANT MY MONEY BACK. This is what I get for not doing my research...BUT I STILL WANT MY MONEY BACK.

Whoever proofread this book should be court-martialed for dereliction of duty. Grammatical errors abound:incorrect verb tenses,punctuation,misplaced modifiers,unclear antecedents,typos,
spelling,missing/additional words,incomplete sentences,etc. Repetition of facts,changing focus mid=paragraph,contradictions. Examples: "drug" instead of "dragged","brung" instead of "brought","president"instead of"precedent","wonder" instead of "wander","hostilities" instead of "hostiles"...and all of this-and more- in the 1st 100 pages! But wait;there is more. JEB Stewart instead of "Stuart"(oh,come
on),"Rossier" instead of "Rossiter".Rossiter and Wheeler were not younger than George, and Custer was never a major as indicated on pg.63. Forget"Garry Owen","Taps" should be played over this book,and it should be buried as far from the LBH as possible. Oh yes,almost forgot--it is African "descent" not "decent"....Just finished the book. I'm asking for my $24.95 back.This book is an insult to the soldiers who perished, and an embarassment to the company that published it.PLEASE-do notwaste your $. This is my final entry as my position is being overrun by hostile, renegade literary forces.I'm saving the last bullet for myself.Farewell. Come to think of it-keep the $; use it to further either the author's or editor's language/research skills.

This book is not only a great read, but it is historical, factual, and spellbinding. I have read many accounts of this event, and none have captured my attention and won my praise to such a degree. I highly recommend this book!
