Book Description
Despite Bill Brandt's fame and considerable influence on the development of modern photography, the photographs in this book are a little known body of work and have never been previously published. The work was carried out between 1939 and 1943 when Brandt worked on a commercial assignment for the Bournville Village Trust. The photographs illustrate living conditions and form distinct picture stories where direct contrasts are made between slum and municipal housing. Many books and articles published around this time sought to address the issue of the living conditions of the working classes and photography played a key role.
2004 sees the celebration of Brandt's centenary year. Major collections of his prints are held by MoMA and Rochester's International Museum of Photography.
Customer Reviews:
Let the sunshine in.......2006-06-01
A fascinating book of Brandt photos contrasting English slums with planned municipal estates. This was the kind of assignment that he loved: the chance to put across a social point-of-view using real people and places. The sixty-three photos (beautifully printed with 200dpi) are probably the best of visits he made to Birmingham and London for the Bournville Village Trust.
There seems to be a continuing mystery about these photos though because they were discovered in the Trust's archives as a series of seventy-seven prints mounted on cardboard with the negatives (but actually missing eight of these). It would be rather unusual for a commercial photographer to hand over negatives to the client because additional income could be made by doing extra prints and the print quality could still conform to the original supplied prints. Brandt said of the commission that it was "...a job well done".
An interesting essay in the front of the book reveals how Brandt manipulated the artificial light in the slums to contrast with the brighter better homes where sunlight through open windows is the light source. Frequently a semi rural location is shown outside the windows. There is a stunning shot on page eighty-four of a young boy looking in a window at his parents eating a meal (with full plates) heavy shadows on the tablecloth from the bright sun and trees in the background. Compare this with a family eating in their dark slum living room on page twenty-nine, cups of tea and sandwiches possibly the main meal of the day.
As well as the sixty-three photos, one to a page, there are the eleven cardboard mounts shown that had the original prints, again one to a page, and three essays about Bill Brandt and his approach to photojournalism. A worthwhile photobook in my view.

Le sous-titre demeure ambitieux : A Complete Introduction to Thorstein Veblen's Economics.
Book Description
Most economics programs no longer require the study of the history of economic thought or the philosophical foundations of diverse schools of economics. Introduction to Political Economy brings those ideas back into the economics curriculum.
This second edition covers the works of four of the most influential economists of modern times - Marx, Veblen, Keynes, and Galbraith - who are simply ignored in most graduate and undergraduate economics courses. The authors examine such concepts as social class, misleading mainstream assumptions about human behavior, psychological and other dimensions of human behavior, and the key role of government in taming capitalist economies. The authors also consider the Swedish model as a "middle way" between capitalism and socialism.
Customer Reviews:
Good intentions, but comes up short.......2002-12-04
The chapter on Swedish social democracy (I was surprised how much better than manage their economy than the U.S.) is quite informative, and by far the best part of the book; however the chapters on Galbraith, Keynes, and political economy, among others, tend to be a little too short to do their subjects justice.
Having said this, this book is still a good effort, and would go far in a classroom to give an alternative to a subject too often biased toward the right.

Excellent resource, entertaining activities.......2001-05-22
As the mother of four inquisitive and creative children, I am always looking for fun ways to celebrate holidays and special events with the kids. Memories in Moments has provided us with hours of entertaining, fun-filled activities. There is something for everyone and for every possible occasion. The reindeer cookies were a hit at Christmas; the generational photograph with a picture of Grandpa and Dad playing ball next to a picture of Dad and the kids playing ball is a real conversation piece; and the kids haven't stopped talking about the tooth fairy's trail of stardust. Each activity is coded so you know in a glance if it has to do with baking, decorating, games, gifts or simple gestures. Some of the activities take a few minutes, some can take hours to complete. There really is something for everyone. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has chidren - be it parents, grandma and grandpa, babysitters or teachers. Get your copy and let your creative juices flow!
Unique ideas to create special moments in your life.......2001-04-15
Have you ever wondered how to take the terror out of your child's first lost tooth? How about leaving a trail of stardust from your child's windowsill to her pillow? What about a few tricks to avoid overeating on Thanksgiving? How about setting up a big jigsaw puzzle to provide an alternative activity while dinner is cooking? This book is chock-full of interesting ideas to make every holiday and event unique and memorable. It makes a great gift for new parents and grandparents, new neighbors and new friends. It's the kind of gift book they will remember you for, because they will keep on using it. It's a great idea for Mother's Day and Father's Day too. Highly recommended.
Five seasons of magical memories.......2000-03-12
This book is a super choice for Mothers and Fathers, Aunts and Uncles or Grandparents. It is filled with hundreds of fabulous inspirational ideas. The ideas are referenced well and easy to implement. There is something to spark your interest at any time of the year. This book will inspire you to orchestrate an unforgetable repertoire of magical memories with those you love!
Customer Reviews:
Unconventional Warfare.......2001-05-25
I was involved in the Iran hostage rescue attempt in 1980 and retired in 1982. I attended a reunion at Fort Bragg some years later and was shocked to see the growth in size and prestige of the SOF community. One of my former mates had just been promoted to 4-star and appointed CINCUSSOCOM.
Until I read this book I didn't understand how we got from Desert One to having our own CINC. This is a great effort by Ms. Marquis, meticulously researched and footnoted. Anyone interested in the evolution and the future of Special Operations Forces must read this book! Hats off to the author!
Great insights into the world of special ops.......1999-01-24
Unconventional Warfare skips the heavy-handed agenda of many books on special ops. Covers all American special operations forces including Special Forces, SEALs, and Air Force spec ops. Good history of U.S. special operations forces plus an explanation of how this critical military capability was nearly lost after Vietnam and then rebuilt because of the heroics of true believers. A surprising page turner given the thoroughness of the research. Great work!
Pretty good, but..........1998-11-21
The author did a thorough job of research and documentation, except in one area...Special Tactics. She nearly completely overlooked this SOF force. Additionally, she was completely off track when she stated "the primary mission of pararescue is emergency medical treatment". The primary mission of pararescue is PERSONNEL RECOVERY! Our job is combat and peacetime rescue...we are rescue technicians and specialize in TRAUMA medical treatment. We are not "medics". This is stated in numerous doctrine documents (both Air Force and Joint Doctrine)...how or why this happened is beyond me. ST is a continually overlooked force (both by design and circumstance) but to have this statement included in a book like this (dedicated to SOF) is unforgiveable...a serious lack of research in this area, and a serious hole in the literature. Overall the book was well written and right on target in so far as the "overall" SOF picture, but to nearly exclude ST is at best, unfortunate, and at worst, brings her other ideas and conclusions into question. Special Tactics Group is not even our designation...that is our "functional" headquarters...we are Special Tactics Squadrons.
An in-depth view of modern U.S. special operations.......1998-11-02
Susan Marquis does the special ops community a service by bringing us this account of its rebirth after the failed hostage rescue mission in 1980. Though some of the book seems burdened with detail and lacks the action-packed dialogue of most special operations literature, "Unconventional Warfare" brings to light the budget battles and turf wars that have always been the curse of U.S. special operations. Whether the conventional services like it or not, special operations will play a vital role in the future of U.S. foreign policy and war-fighting. If we are to avoid the mistakes of the past, we would do well to read "Unconventional Warfare" and heed the lessons it contains. John Lance, AFSOC pilot

Book Description
The birds of Sulawesi, Indonesia, are unique. Nearly 100 species are found nowhere else in the world - this high rate of endemism serves as a magnet for bird watchers world wide. This book is the first illustrated bird book for Sulawesi and it provides an introduction to the remarkable wealth of birds. Of the 278 species found there, 161 species are described, with brief reference to another 88. 142 species are illustrated in colour, 22 in black-and-white. Written in non-technical prose, distinguishing features, behaviour, voice, and habitat are covered. A complete checklist is included.
Customer Reviews:
good, but wanting book.......1999-05-14
although this is a landmark in that it is the very first book published on birds of sulawesi, it is incomplete and rather amatuerish. the illustrations are fairly good and the text is okay, but a book like this should list and descrtibe all the birds that occur on sulawesi, endemic (which there are nearly 100) and widespread. There is no mantion of the sulawesi drongo Dicrurus montanus or the Lompobattang Flycatcher (Ficedula bonthiana. the style seems as though it was intended for children rather than serious birdwatchers.

Description:
Unprecedented deforestation is currently underway in Southeast Asia. Since this trend is likely to continue, it is critical to determine the value of human-modified habitats (e.g., mixed-rural habitat) for conserving the regional native forest avifauna. The impacts of ongoing deforestation on the highly endemic avifauna (33%) of Sulawesi (Indonesia) are poorly understood. We sampled birds in primary and secondary forests in the Lore Lindu National Park in central Sulawesi, as well as the surrounding plantation and mixed-rural habitats. Species richness, species density and population density of forest birds showed a consistent decreasing trend in the following order: primary forests>secondary forests>mixed-rural habitat>plantations. Although primary forests contained the highest proportion (85%) of a total of 34 forest species recorded from our point count surveys, 40-yr old secondary forests and the mixed-rural habitat showed high conservation potential, containing 82% and 76% of the forest species, respectively. Plantations recorded only 32% of the forest bird species. Fifteen forest species had the highest abundance in primary forests, while two species had higher abundance outside primary forests. Our simulations revealed that all forest birds that were sensitive to native tree cover could be found in areas with at least 20% continuous native tree cover. Our study shows that although primary forests have the highest conservation value for forest avifauna, the potential of degraded habitats, such as secondary forests and the mixed-rural habitat, for conserving forest species can be enhanced with appropriate land use and management decisions.

Description:
Relatively few studies have focussed on the relationship between resource use and rarity. Rare species could differ from common species in two ways: rare species may utilise resources that are themselves rarer or rare species may utilise a narrower range of resources than common species (i.e., they are more specialised). I investigated the relationship between local abundance and patterns of food resource use for an assemblage of 19 frugivorous birds in the tropical lowland rain forest of Sulawesi, Indonesia. Over a 10-month period I collected data on two measures of rarity, the local abundance and monthly variability in local abundance of each bird species, together with data on their feeding ecology including dietary specialisation, resource availability, resource overlap and habitat use. These measures produced 18 ecological variables, 17 of which I correlated with the two measures of rarity using univariate correlations and minimum adequate multiple regression models. These were carried out using the original data and independent contrasts that controlled for potential phylogenetic bias. Both measures of rarity were most strongly correlated with measures of resource availability. In both the original data and independent contrasts regression models of the temporal variability in bird abundance, only temporal fruit availability was included as a significant predictor. In the regression models of bird abundance, the strongest significant predictor was the amount of rare fruit in the diet (a negative relationship). Both models also included measures of resource specialisation, however, these were not significant in the absence of the measure of resource availability. On Sulawesi, rare frugivorous birds utilise rare resources. Specialisation, however, might be an important factor in species persistence once they become rare. The generality of the findings need to be tested.

A Good Guide.......2003-11-14
A good bird guide to a fascinating region (my favouirite part of the world) which has among the highest number of unique, endemic species anywhere.
Some of the drawings could be better - and the "cutting off" the birds' tails on many pages is a weird thing!
Also, some information on the birds' behaviour could have made the book more informative.
But it is still an impressive guide, and in any case the only one around.
It is a pity that it's not available here - but it is still sold as a new book on Amazon's UK site!
