Book Description

By introducing the basics of architectural science, this book is an ideal reference that provides an understanding of the physical basis of architectural design. The knowledge gained from this book equips the reader with the tools for realizing the full potential of the good intentions of sustainable, bioclimatic design.

The text gives the reader the knowledge to design in order to control indoor environmental conditions: heat, light and sound. Into this discussion is introduced the problem that traditional energy resources are finite, and their use damaging, and governments and professional bodies demand increasing levels of sustainable design. An outline is provided for creating the required indoor conditions with little or no use of energy, other than from renewable sources.

Each chapter presents a quick outline of the basic and relevant physics of heat, light, sound and energy, followed by an examination of human requirements. The reader is then introduced to ways in which these elements can be controlled by the building and by its design.

* Links architectural science to the practice of sustainable design; essential knowledge for today's architects
* Accessible reference which introduces the relationship between technology and design decisions
* Unique source of information covering the full scope of the subject

4 out of 5 stars Bridges the gap betwen science & architecture.......2004-09-15

This is a real good buy. Prof. Szokolay is one of the prominent experts in the field. I was waiting for this book to be published .... to use it as the required textbook for a course I teach. It is a perfect content for an Architectural Engineering course on environmental control. Sadly, I couldn't require it for the course because it is all IS units. Still, I use it for my personal use.

                            Book Description

During the 1980s a dramatic change in the evolution of the modern corporation took place. The phenomenon, which has been labelled "refocusing," "de-diversifying," "de-conglomerating," or simply "getting back to basics," has changed the terrain of American business. Diversification, Refocusing, and Economic Performance empirically examines the causes and consequences of this phenomenon from a corporate strategy perspective, uncovering the full scope and effects of corporate refocusing, its strategic logic, and the resultant managerial implications. Two key findings are that every firm has its own limit for diversification, beyond which profits will decline, and that there are certain similarities among those companies who choose to refocus.

Starting right after the Second World War, many companies diversified widely, primarily in areas unrelated to their core businesses. In the 1980s, however, as corporate acquisitions and hostile takeovers ran rampant, this trend toward diversification and conglomeration began to reverse. Today, there is ample evidence that corporate managers are responding in significant numbers to takeover threats by shedding unlucrative divisions and subsidiaries and concentrating on boosting the core product lines that have been their company's bread-and-butter.

Drawing on a data set of 250 of the top Fortune 500 companies, Constantinos Markides measures the extent of the refocusing phenomenon, proposes reasons for its current popularity, delineates the characteristics of firms that are refocusing, and discusses the effects of refocusing on company market value, profitability, and organizational structure.

Shifting Fortunes takes on the long, often tumultuous history of the American labor movement in a concise narrative that follows organized labor's emergence in 19th-century mines through its glory days in the famous automobile strikes of the 1930s, right up to the decline symbolized by the firing of striking air-traffic controllers by President Reagan. Daniel Nelson, a professor of history at the University of Akron, keeps digressions to a minimum, concentrating on the big themes that keep the story moving. While designed as a general overview, Shifting Fortunes does offer a wealth of factual material; attention is paid to major organizations, such as the Knights of Labor, the International Workers of the World, and the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union, as well as individuals such as John L. Lewis and Samuel Gompers. And though the book's subtitle indicates that labor is in decline, Nelson does end his narrative with a look to the future that suggests American labor may well be resurgent. --Robert McNamara

A concise, original, and illuminating interpretation of the rise and decline of American labor from the 1820s to the present, focusing on the role of the autonomous worker, the threat of employer reprisals, and the influence of external forces. "This book should be read by all those coping with widowhood; those studying gender, aging, or social roles; and those providing services to widows." --Choice "This volume provides an overview of the major themes that have characterized the study of widowhood in recent decades. . . .There is a richness and depth to the discussion, which draws on a large body of research not only on widowhood but also on such related topics as later-life marriage, caregiving roles, friendship ties, employment patterns, and the changing roles of wife and mother. . . .This volume brings together Helena Znaniecka Lopata's insights and understandings based on nearly 30 years of research on widowhood in a variety of contexts. . . .The book is well anchored in its focus on widowhood as both a process of transition--involving the movement from wife to widow--and as a status--with certain characteristics, rights, and expectations--held by previously married individuals." --Anne Martin Matthews,

                                      Book Description

In this worthy addition to the Men-at-Arms series, Martin Windrow examines the history and uniforms of the French Foreign Legion from the start of the First World War to the end of the Second World War. The author's knowledgeable text covers such topics as a comprehensive battle history of the Legion on the Western Front 1914-18, the colonial campaigns in Morocco, Syria and Indochina, the Battle of France and campaign in Tunisia. This volume is splendidly illustrated throughout, containing a wealth of contemporary photographs and eight full page colour plates by Mike Chappell.

5 out of 5 stars Fine Overview of Fascinating Forces.......2002-01-24

The author has had a long and distinguished career in popular military history for over twenty five years.
Originally raised in the nineteenth century for pacifying the inhabitants of then Algeria, the so-called "romance" of the Foreign Legion has long fascinated the general reader around the world. The reality was much different. Not Beau Geste at all. Before the Great War of 1914, the Legion was composed of long service men most of whom had no other home. Their loyalty was pledged to the Legion not to France, thus they did not forsake their own nationalities. It was a hard and dangerous life but not without its satisfactions to the many hard men who joined it.
When the war broke out in 1914, nationals of many nations not directly involved rushed to enlist in the service of France. The political decision was made to enroll these men in the Legion, not in the French Army. This led to clashes of view between the idealistic new comers and the hard-bitten "old sweats". But this was finally smoothed out and the Legion earned its laurels. One unit was decorated so many times that it wore a double fouraguerre (a braided cord worn on the shoulder as an award of unit valor akin to an individual's award of the Croix de Guerre.) and they were told that if they continued to excell in bravery, the Army would continue to invent new insignia for them.
This work is a splendid example of the new emphasis of the publisher on producing comprehensive works in a handy inexpensive format compared with the earlier broad brush treatments which covered too much in too little detail.
The new emphasis is on sets and volumes covering various national armed forces in as much detail as is available, consistent with the current purpose of the works in the series, which have evolved from an original emphasis on serving the military miniature maker market into works intended to enlighten the general reader in enough detail to satisfy the merely curious and to point the way to further reading.
Most of us, including myself, have little need for, or the patience to read, voluminous studies, often in foreign languages, covering many eras and nations. My main interest is in the US forces, their allies and their enemies in the twentieth century.
That said, these works should be purchased as presented, in sets within the series. Since they are produced as a set, the volumes cover only relevent parts of the general history and the clothing and individual equipment is covered as it appears in each period. The French Army, US Army, British Army, and Italian Army series all have three volumes, covering the major theatres and time periods of the war. The German set has five.
This should be read along with the volumes on the French Army of the same period.
If you want an introduction to the fascinating variety of clothing and equipment of the forces covered, this set is for you.

3 out of 5 stars Not very extensive, almost a childrens book........2001-08-19

I thought this book would be a little more extensive. It had only a few color photos of hand drawn images from the author and the rest were black and white. It had a good explanation of the Legion's history but again, not as extensive as I thought it would be. Seems almost like a childrens book.

5 out of 5 stars Vive la France!.......2000-05-18

After reading this book, I plan to join the French Foreign Legion. For scholars of the time period, this offers a much looked-over perspective of the two world wars and the period between them. The Foreign Legion didn't just hang out in Africa, they traveled all over Europe and Asia as well, and this book is fantastic, as are all of the Osprey Men-at-Arms titles.

                                        Book Description

This is a true story of two unusual individuals: County, a robin, who chose to share her life with a human, and Linda Johns, an artist, whoi was happy to accomadate her. Through her dlightful and descriptive narrative, Linda Jones draws us into the mysterious realm of an intelligent and responsive creature. Throughout the harrowing experiences of bug-collecting, nest building, egg swapping and parenting, we begin to share with the author a growing respect for the resourcefulness of these tiny creatures and our commonality with them in the remarkable process called life.

A charming tale of adaptation, coexistance and wonder. I highly recommend this book to any bird lover and as a marvelous gift for Mother's Day or for any caregiver.

This is a most agreeable book, and the fact that its message is a radical one shouldn't put you off in the least.

First, the story. Long ago there was a meadow in which a bunch of horses lived an idyllic life, nibbling the grass here and there and playing in the sun. Mumkin, one of the horses, knows exactly where the best grass is, and shoos any other horse away that tries to move in on his area. This doesn't really bother the other horses, though; the meadow has plenty for all.

One day, though, Mumkin decides to build a fence to keep the other horses away from his precious grass. It's true that doing so keeps him awake at night, worrying about whether someone is going to break it down and sneak in, but eventually he gets to sleep. When he wakes up, though, he finds that everyone else has built fences around their territories, and life, which had previously been carefree, has become intolerable.

Mumkin climbs a nearby hill to try and find his own compound (which he had lost amongst the maze of new fences), and from the height he can no longer see the barriers--only the meadow itself, glorious as ever. He is filled with regret at his actions, and runs back into the valley to tear down his own fence. The other horses follow suit, and the story ends happily.

It is striking, to me, that the moral is quite different from that in most children's books. In most cases, children are invited to share; in this case, we might have expected Mumkin to open the gate to his new compound, and to invite his friends in to enjoy his grass. Instead, we are shown that the fences themselves are what has caused the problem. What's advocated isn't sharing, but a much stronger (and, to me, more attractive) version of community.

I'm aware that, by this review, I've probably turned off some potential readers, and that would be a shame. The book is in no sense a political tract, but is worthwhile purely as entertainment. (It's probably just a curse of mine to see everything politically! Incidentally, I've just looked at the dedication, and Cosgrove salutes "two great men. Together one day in Geneva they tried to see the world without borders of thicket and vine", which makes me wonder if his target wasn't, perhaps, nationalism and the creation of frontiers.)

I'm no expert in assessing readability, but I'd say this is a Level 3 book, which could be read by 8-year-olds, and enjoyed by much younger children who like to read about horses.

                                        5 out of 5 stars Mumkin.......2000-04-03

This is a great book amoung a series to teach important lessons and values. This is the second series I have purchased and this one I am donating to the school so that all the children can experience them.
