Longtime Japan resident Amy Sylvester Katoh and photographer Shin Kimura have created a fascinating and educational masterpiece in Japan: The Art of Living. More than 300 pictures of rooms, furniture, table arrangements, stylish windows, and more enliven its pages as they guide the reader on a "photographic tour of exquisite homes in the Tokyo area, focusing on ... antiques and folk crafts."

Katoh counsels readers to break free from some of the rules that govern Japanese style and design and experiment with their own brand of panache--or Japanache, as Katoh calls it. Instead of simply cataloging stylish homes, the author presents a design element, such as tansu chests, with a dozen options and alternatives, providing both ancient ideas and their modern updates. In addition to the superb photos and engaging text, there is also an index of places to buy the featured antiques, textiles, washi paper, screens, and other items, both in Japan and in 11 states in the U.S. If you were a fan of Japanese design before, this book will make you a fanatic. --Jhana Bach

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars expecting something different.......2002-12-16

If you are looking for examples of the zen and minimalist aspects of Japanese style, then this is the wrong book for you.

Pluses:
Some of the pictures are interesting, and I liked many of the cultural aspects of the book.

Minuses:
Some of the pictures reminded me of the elaborate and glitzy decor of some Westernized Asian restaurants.

Recommendation:
If you are interested in all aspects of Japanese style, this book might interest you. Everyone else should avoid buying this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Sourcebook for Japanese Interior Design.......2000-12-15

Regardless if you want to have a Japanese Tea Room, a Japanese touch, or just like looking at great photographs of Interior Design, you should buy this book.

I normally don't like books which take elements from one Style, in this case Japanese, and then adapt it for Western use, but here it works very well, thanks to superb and tasteful examples. The authors are also very up-front about it, as the sub-title which does not appear on the cover is "A Sourcebook of Japanese Style for the Western Home".

In hundreds of excellent photographs we are shown in sections with such titles as: "Light and Space", "Traditional Furniture" and "Japanese Textiles" just how easy it is to give rooms and areas of your home a Japanese touch or feel. I personally like the Style very much because it is subdued, almost austere, yet elegant, and makes much use of natural materials. The book is full of really clever examples of what one can do with space, and the best part is, that for the most part it can be done without great expense. The list of sources of where to buy materials at the end of the book is unfortunately out of date. The copy of the book I have was published in 1990, but many sources should be readily available on the Internet.

Along with the excellent book "Japanese Style" by Suzanne Slesin, et.al. (at the time of writing out of print), "Japan: The Art of Living" is all you'll need to go Japanese. And lastly before I forget, the price is right.

            Book Description

In 1928 New York native Muriel Earley Sheppard moved with her mining engineer husband to the Toe River Valley —an isolated pocket in North Carolina between the Blue Ridge and Iron Mountains. Sheppard began visiting her neighbors and forming friendships in remote coves and rocky clearings, and in 1935 her account of life in the mountains—Cabins in the Laurel—was published. The book included 128 striking photographs by the well-known Chapel Hill photographer, Bayard Wootten, a frequent visitor to the area.

The early reviews of Cabins in the Laurel were overwhelmingly positive, but the mountain people—Sheppard's friends and subjects—initially felt that she had portrayed them as too old-fashioned, even backward. As novelist John Ehle shows in his foreword, though, fifty years have made a huge difference, and the people of the Toe River Valley have been among its most affectionate readers.

This new large-format edition, which makes use of many of Wootten's original negatives, will introduce Sheppard's words and Wootten's photography to a whole new generation of readers—in the Valley and beyond.

                      Book Description

A very net, very clear and very persuasive explanation of why Hawaii should pursue a strategy of becoming a center of technology-based business and what that strategy should be.

                      Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Blue Wave Millennium: NOT A Future for Hawaii.......2002-03-05

This book affirms that Hawaii's economy is in trouble and that changes are required. The author proposes that high-tech is the best, if not only, means to develop a sustainable economy in Hawaii.

The need identified is a fundamental truth to be embraced: Hawaii must be able to function in the New Economy.

A central premise of the book is sound: that, in the new millennium, knowledge and communications are the primary engines of growth.

The author's Blue Wave Millennium strategy (BWM)is that Hawaii be "a center for specific types of R&D and technology related business." While this concept has appeal and prospect, the book does not credibly present BWM as a plan for sustainable economic development.

The "traditional vision" is defined as reliant on a tourism industry that has stalled and is self-limiting. The author provides a clear synopsis of Hawaii's excessive reliance on a non-sustainable visitor industry and asserts, "Tourism won't be, can't be, and shouldn't be the main source of our economy's growth."

It is stated that agriculture "will never again have the strength that sugar once had" - mistakenly equating the fate of Hawaii agriculture with the fate of sugar. Sugar has lost, forever, its position as king of the island economy, but Hawaii agriculture is in resurgence. In 1980's and 1990's, the sugar industry declined due to reasons the author articulates well. During this same period the value of diversified agriculture increased by 200%.

The author faintly acknowledges the merit of agriculture contributing to Hawaii's economy via import substitution. The actuality of this taking place and the potential of a larger contribution is disregarded. Such disregard is unfortunate in the context of a discussion of high-tech, since agriculture in the new millennium is utilizing high-tech and will continue to do so at an increasing rate.

As the author points out, coffee, macadamia nuts, and exotic tropical fruits are all grown elsewhere, so that Hawaii is one of many competitors. This is also true for computer technology - it is produced elsewhere and any new entrants into this market will be one of many competitors.

In critiquing components of the Hawaii economy, the military sector is not mentioned. An informed analysis of Hawaii's economy, as it exists today and in the near- to mid-future, requires including the impact of the military.

The high-tech successes of Ireland and Bangalore, India in the 1990's are given as examples for Hawaii to follow.

Contrary to what is implied, Ireland being an island does not make it analogous to Hawaii. That Ireland is further from the US than Hawaii fails to prove that Hawaii's remote location is not an impediment to establishment of a high-tech economy in the islands. Ireland is close to, part of, and has special market access to, the European Union, a large market.

Bangalore does not, as the author claims, prove "that the Blue Wave Millennium is achievable." The author praises policies that made Bangalore a high-tech economic success, particularly the Indian government's approach to getting high-tech parks built. Would industry development policy from Bangalore be suitable in Hawaii? A notorious case of industry development in India was the location of the worst chemical disaster in history: the 1984 gas leak at a chemical plant in Bhopal, India. Does Hawaii want to use as a role model, industry development policies that resulted in such a catastrophe?

There is a fundamental economic reason that emulating Ireland's and Bangalore's leadership in the high-tech boom of the 1990's is unlikely to replicate their successes in Hawaii. An entrepreneur, company, or community contemplating investment must recognize that early innovators capture high returns and followers compete to sustain lower returns. Being a follower will not result in Hawaii having sustainable prosperity in the twenty-first century.

BWM would have Hawaii become "a place where high-tech gets done." Perhaps, instead, Hawaii should be a place where high-tech gets used. High-tech (computer technology), properly utilized, reduces the cost of activities. This cost reduction comes from two sources: gains in efficiency realized by those who use high-tech, and, in the year 2002 and beyond, a declining price for computer technology. It is preferable to pay a low price for and then use cost-saving technology, instead of investing in an industry that produces low priced technology.

The steps to BWM include improved quality of education; private sector alliances; partnership between government, industry and academia; competitive government; financial incentives; tax reform; support from large corporations, entrepreneurs, and the public; and venture capital. All of these steps represent good ideas. None are new ideas and none are unique to high-tech.

The BWM selling point is that "Hawaii has unique advantages in lifestyle, telecommunications facilities, existing expertise, and time zone." These advantages, properly exploited, can make Hawaii more attractive for business investment. However, they are not so unique as the author implies.

The author alludes to biotech, but emphasizes computer technology. More elaboration on what biotech has to offer Hawaii would have been good.

It is imperative that knowledge become the engine for Hawaii's economy. The challenge for Hawaii is not to duplicate a model that has been successful for another place, at another time, with another set of circumstances. The challenge for Hawaii is to create and use knowledge, including high-tech and biotech, as an economic engine to do what no one else has done. This would be the way for Hawaii to create a sustainable social and economic future in which the health of the natural environment is constantly improved.

4 out of 5 stars Technology in the Tropics.......2000-11-09

Hawaii ought to be as vital a center of high technology (albeit smaller in scale) as Silicon Valley or the Miracle Mile in Boston, or Fairfax, VIrginia or even Bangalore India. Hawaii has a climate that is wonderful, natural beauty all around, a time zone break that lets you talk in real time to New York and Tokyo in the same business day and (big secret here) is one of the most wired states in the country. You can surf in the morning, be at your computer by 10 a.m., work, catch an afternoon of golf or sunset tennis, work some more. On the Big Island of Hawaii you can do all that and add skiing. Lifestyle is perfect, housing prices are lower that Silicon Valley and forget the smog and traffic congestion. It has not happened (with a few exceptoins, like the astronomy center atop Mauna Kea or the Super Computer on Maui, etc.) but why? Tony Clapes explains why -- in a word, most people still stuck in the Old Economy of tourism and even plantation agriculture. And he tells us what needs to be done about it. Nothing short or a grass roots crusade, he says. There is lots to argue about here and Blue Wave Millennium is a great way to get the discussion started.

                            Description:
Mercury, a toxic metal known to have several deleterious affects on human health, has been one of the principal contaminants of concern in the Great Lakes basin. There are numerous anthropogenic sources of mercury to the Great Lakes area. Combustion of coal, smelting of nonferrous metals, and incineration of municipal and medical waste are major sources of mercury emissions in the region. In addition to North American anthropogenic emissions, global atmospheric emissions also significantly contribute to the deposition of mercury in the Great Lakes basin. Both the USA and Canada have agreed to reduce human exposure to mercury in the Great Lakes basin and have significantly curtailed mercury load to this region through individual and joint efforts. However, many important mercury sources, such as coal-fired power plants, still exist in the vicinity of the Great Lakes. More serious actions to drastically reduce mercury sources by employing alternative energy sources, restricting mercury trade and banning various mercury containing consumer products, such as dental amalgam are as essential as cleaning up the historical deposits of mercury in the basin. A strong political will and mass momentum are crucial for efficient mercury management. International cooperation is equally important. In the present paper, we have analyzed existing policies in respective jurisdictions to reduce mercury concentration in the Great Lakes environment. A brief review of the sources, occurrence in the Great Lakes, and the health effects of mercury is also included.

In this path breaking study, social economist Naila Kabeer examines the lives of Bangladeshi garment workers in Bangladesh and Britain to shed light on the question of what constitutes 'fair' competition in international trade. Kabeer argues that any attempt to devise acceptable labor standards at the international level which takes no account of the forces of inclusion and exclusion within local labor markets is likely to represent the interests of powerful losers in international trade at the expense of weak winners.

                                      Book Description

In this absorbing story of how child abuse grew from a small, private-sector charity concern into a multimillion-dollar social welfare issue, Barbara Nelson provides important new perspectives on the process of public agenda setting. Using extensive personal interviews and detailed archival research, she reconstructs an invaluable history of child abuse policy in America. She shows how the mass media presented child abuse to the public, how government agencies acted and interacted, and how state and national legislatures were spurred to strong action on this issue. Nelson examines prevailing theories about agenda setting and introduces a new conceptual framework for understanding how a social issue becomes part of the public agenda. This issue of child abuse, she argues, clearly reveals the scope and limitations of social change initiated through interest-group politics. Unfortunately, the process that transforms an issue into a popular cause, Nelson concludes, brings about programs that ultimately address only the symptoms and not the roots of such social problems.

                                      Book Description

There have always been women among pirates and sea robbers. Metaphors of mysterious and destructive femininity may have perennially been assigned to the sea and its dangers, but the real women who sailed on ships steered them, sank with them, commanded them, even commandeered them have been ignored by a history written by and for patriarchal men.

Ample evidence of women pirates and even feminine piracy nonetheless abounds: beginning with ancient legends of Amazon sailors in several cultural traditions, and continuing uninterrupted through a wealth of confirmed historical figures, down to the present.

Women Pirates and the Politics of the Jolly Roger is an account of piracy through three millennia, in histories of women and men sailing on four seas: the Chinese Straits, the Mediterranean, the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean. Writing with passion and humour, but without romanticizing, or ignoring the unsavoury side of some of their heroines, the authors turn history on its head. Nor do they forget the practical details, even including genuine recipes for shark and other delights.

The volume is introduced by Gabriel Kuhn's essay on anarchism and piracy, "Under the Death's Head." Considering the history of Caribbean piracy and drawing on Stirner and Foucault among others, Kuhn describes a breaking out of structured obedience, an escape from perpetual supervision, a plunge into unpredictability, danger, "everything that makes strong, free action."

"The stories are lively and exciting. You'll definately be able to taste the sensation of piracy, as the authors have included a number of actual recipes prepared on the high seas. This book is by far not the best book that I have read on pirates. It is written more for a woman who is feeling bad about her sexuality. The book is an effort to list every woman, fictional and otherwise, that has ever had a role in maritime history. The book starts out by talking about ancient gods (yes, female gods) that related to the sea. This discussion is better saved for a book on mythology because it was a good summary of female gods but it did not pertain to pirates. The book moves on and talks about female pirates through the ages all over the world. While this is somewhat informative I believe that the significance of these woman pirates in history is way overstated. Female pirates were very few and far between, and many really shouldn't be considered pirates. The best part of the book was the discussion of the most netorious women pirates, Mary Read and Anne Bonny. These two chapters were interesting and informative but they were also burried in the book. I would suggest a book that includes but is not limited to woman pirates because the fact is that there were very few woman pirates in history. The last quarter of the book focused on the politics of the Jolly Roger. This section helped to save the book but it often repeated and contradicted the first part of the book. I noticed a few inaccurate statements in this section, but on the whole this section was well done. This book is not a total waste of time, but it gets off topic and overstates things in my opinion. Women have played a huge part in world history, just not as pirates.

                                            Book Description

Take a hike in the desert, turn any street corner in the West, and you will find the plump silhouette of the Gambel's quail. From the dry desert floor to gift shop collectibles, these endearing birds are often found in a graceful convoy, waddling along with their young trailing behind. In Gambel's Quail, a new addition to the Look West series, we will find that while these birds, looking quite snappy with their plumed topknots, exude a quiet sense of elegance, they can be quite obnoxious with their loud and boisterous clucking and crowing.

These social birds always travel in a group and use different vocalizations for different behaviors. In Gambel's Quail, learn how to invite Gambel's quail into your yard, how to encourage nesting in your prized pot, and how to interact with them. 30 photos & illustrations.

About the series: Look West: What do you find? Wide, wild landscapes...extraordinary plants and animals...rugged people rich in history...ghost towns and working ranches...ancient pueblos and ultramodern urban areas. In the West, coyotes howl. Native Americans endure and flourish. Kokopelli, the mythical humpbacked flute player, prances across the cliff dwellings and into popular culture—and thousands of curio shops. Every small, handsome book in Rio Nuevo Publishers' new Look West series presents a unique aspect of the American West. Using words and pictures, each volume explores a special Western topic or phenomenon, and all have been written and illustrated by regional experts. Each of these attractive 6 x 6-inch hardcover books contains 64 pages of text, illustrations, and photographs. And each one allows the reader to capture the spirit of the West in the palm of a hand.

From the supplier: A captive female Gambel's quail was observed to be molting into partial male plumage in the summer of 1996. The bird was at least two years old and had previously exhibited female plumage only. It had long, wide and black plumage usually found on male quails. It also had striking rusty head patch but the posterior area had rusty and gray feathers similar to female quails. It is hypothesized that the captive bird has abnormal estrogen levels since sexually dimorphic birds, such as shown in pheasants, have plumage that are estrogen-dependent.

From the author: Male Gambel's Quail (Callipepla gambelii) have strikingly ornate plumage. Yet, captive experiments indicate that removing multiple ornaments does not necessarily alter patterns of female mate choice of male-male competition. To test these unexpected results, I observed a wild population of banded quail for three seasons to determine ornamental and body size traits associated with pairing date and winners of male contests. I also documented mating behaviors (e.g., pairing date, mate fidelity, brood size). Consistent with captive studies, male mass, rather than ornate plumage, was the primary feature related to winners of male contests and early pairing. Heavier males paired earlier, regardless of age, but did not exhibit significantly larger ornaments. Adults of both sexes were heavier and paired earlier than yearlings. Early pairing also correlated positively with brood size, suggesting that heavy, early nesting birds experienced greater fitness. Mating behaviors were flexible across seasons. Social monogamy decreased from 83% in 1996 to 30% in 1998, while polygamy (sequential, long term pairings) increased, particularly among yearlings and adult males. Adult females were equally likely to exhibit social monogamy or polygamy each season. They also exhibited the highest frequency of early pairing and the greatest keel scores (a general measure of condition), suggesting their capacity for breeding was high. At least two adult females abandoned their first mate after hatching and re-paired, in an apparent attempt to double brood. Received 31 August 2002, accepted 28 February 2003.
