The practice was formed in 1976 in New York, and rapidly made its mark on international architecture with buildings such as 333 Wacker Drive in Chicago (1979-1983) and DG Bank Headquarters in Frankfurt (1986-1993). Many rare Lennon portraits.......2004-05-02

There are a few books with better rare Lennon photos, but ths is still an excellent effort and a worthy purchase for die hard Beatles fans. So many Beatles-related books trot out the same photos, again and again. You all know the ones I'm talking about. But this book is decidedly and refreshingly different. I have many Lennon biographies in my library and this book contains many previously unpublished photos of John, especially ones from his childhood and in the period 1975-1980. The paper quality in the book is exceptional and is thick, glossy material which results in a stunning display of black and white vibrancy. The text is incidental but adds flavor and gives you the year each photo was taken.

The photos of the Beatles are a little weaker, and contain many previously known shots. But the individual pictures of John are outstanding. Consider the beautiful profile view on the cover of the book, taken in 1967. This is just a sampling of what this treasure trove has to offer. There are many other such nuggets within the covers. Any serious fan of John Lennon will adore this book and get many hours of pleasure perusing these photos of a great cultural and musical icon. John himself would scoff at such a description, but it's oh so true.

As the need to confront unplanned growth increases, planners, policymakers, and citizens are scrambling for practical tools and examples of successful and workable approaches. Growth management initiatives are underway in the U.S. at all levels, but many American "success stories" provide only one piece of the puzzle. To find examples of a holistic approach to dealing with sprawl, one must turn to models outside of the United States. In Green Urbanism, Timothy Beatley explains what planners and local officials in the United States can learn from the sustainable city movement in Europe. The book draws from the extensive European experience, examining the progress and policies of twenty-five of the most innovative cities in eleven European countries, which Beatley researched and observed in depth during a year-long stay in the Netherlands. Seperates truth from fiction.......1999-11-08

The Trade-Off Myth: Fact and Fiction About Jobs and the Environment (Eban Goodstein, Island Press, 1999) Goodstein looks at several claims about jobs and the environment, and finds them all to be false: that regulations cause economy wide loss of jobs, that they devastate local economies, that they create pollution havens, that environmental regulations will generate large numbers of new jobs, and that efforts to control global warming will cause massive losses of jobs. Well written and highly recommended.

How does a democratic government conscript citizens, turn them into soldiers who can fight effectively against a highly trained enemy, and then somehow reward these troops for their service? In Doughboys, the Great War, and the Remaking of America, Jennifer D. Keene argues that the doughboy experience in 1917--18 forged the U.S. Army of the twentieth century and ultimately led to the most sweeping piece of social-welfare legislation in the nation's history -- the G.I. Bill.

Keene shows how citizen-soldiers established standards of discipline that the army in a sense had to adopt. Even after these troops had returned to civilian life, lessons learned by the army during its first experience with a mass conscripted force continued to influence the military as an institution. The experience of going into uniform and fighting abroad politicized citizen-soldiers, Keene finally argues, in ways she asks us to ponder. She finds that the country and the conscripts -- in their view -- entered into a certain social compact, one that assured veterans that the federal government owed conscripted soldiers of the twentieth century debts far in excess of the pensions the Grand Army of the Republic had claimed in the late nineteenth century.

World War I Did Change American Society.......2001-11-21

Americans have largely forgoten the United States war effort during World War I. There are obvious reasons for this -- the larger role played during World War II, the failure of the politicians to live up to the rhetoric of lasting peace, the limited combat exposure and comparatively low casualties suffered by US troops, etc. But World War I did more than prepare the US for World War II, it fundamentaly changed a whole generation of Americans (Stein called Hemingway and company the lost generation because of World WarI) and as Keane effectively argues changed the way the Army works and the nature of the social contract between citizens and the government. Along the way Keane discusses changes in Army procedures and, somewhat disapointingly, the precarious nature race relations during the war. This book exposes little that is relavatory to those who study American history, but by skillfully aranging the facts and details that are known or obvious Keane carefully builds an air tight case in support of her thesis: The soldiers who served during World War I paved the way not only for the GI Bill but for a wider acceptance of government aid to those in need. The modern concept of Entightlements began with the veterans of the "War To End All Wars."

Love those shore birds !!.......2001-04-18

This is the first book of this type for shore bird decoys that I have seen. Other books generally deal with floating decoys and shore birds as secondary. Photos are great. Nice book.
