Good over view book of photography.......2006-04-08

This is a nice book, it covers all the basics of photography that can help make you pictures photos and not just snapshots. However one warning, while the infomation is great, its presented in a very dry format. I found myself getting very sleepy while reading it at some points and I read a lot of photography books. However there are some neat idea in this book as well as some ideas that don't get covered in other photography books like how to take ultra-violet photos.

This book's subtitle is: "How any photographer can take world-class photographs". A lofty goal, but unfortunately one that this book fails to deliver.

Amherst Media, the publisher of this book, seems to have a problem with their releases. They all have great titles, the kind to make you want to pick up the book, but they all seem to waffle when it comes to who's their target audience. Is it the housewife who just picked up her first point and shoot? Or the professional looking to improve their craft? In the end, the publisher tries to appeal to every spectrum and fails to satisfy anyone. This book is no exception.

So what's wrong? WAY too much filler, for one. Mediocre photos for another (this IS a book on achieving the ultimate image, after all... I guarantee you right now that your portfolio contains better images than most of the examples in this book).

Consider the chapter headings. Is this what you expect from a book with this title? Or rather one entitled, "So you've bought your first real camera":

Chapter One: Film or No Film?
Chapter Two: Films for the Ultimate Image Quality
Chapter Three: Selecting the Film Format
Chapter Four: Camera Features
Chapter Five: Camera Operation For Image Quality & Effects
Chapter Six: Lenses for Creating the Ultimate Sharpness
Chapter Seven: Effective Use of Lenses & Lens Controls

I could go on, but you get the idea. A basic photography book, rather poorly executed.

Wildi provokes inspiration.......1999-12-03

Ernst Wildi is a consummate professional who has a unique ability to teach through his writings and demonstrate fundamental concepts of art and photography. Wildi is admittedly a proponent of Hasselblad camera equipment, yet he goes to great pains to be as generic as possible in presenting his beliefs in techniques, equipment, and that's the point of the book. This book would benefit anyone contemplating serious photography, or those contemplating the plunge into medium format films and equipment. Anyone considering "thinking square" should buy this book. Wildi presents the comparisons of ideas in such a way as to challenge the reader to think and see differently. The reader can only guess what equipment and format was used, and the serious amateur will puzzle over the images and ask "how did he do that in 6x6?" Did he?

The diagrams and technical explanations are presented in a lucid way, and not baffling. The photographs are very well-done, but Wildi never disappoints from my experience! Yes, I'm a Wildi fan because his teaching style always pleases me and in a distant way, he has become a great reference even though I'm not currently a Hasselblad devotee. Wildi uses the camera system as a tool to create beautiful images, and this book reflects his craft and ideas!

Wildi tries to provoke creativity.......1999-12-02

Ernst Wildi is a consummate photographer, loves Hasselblad and its native format, and any aspiring medium format photographer should read this book with an open mind. Wildi's work is exemplary. Most of his concepts are readily adaptable to any film format, so he focuses on equipment, films, prints and digital issues in a generic way. He is admittedly biased toward Hasselblad, yet the 6x6 format is so flexible, the concepts are presented in a comparative way and the reader has a difficult time determining which format is used. Beautiful! Wildi, therefore, tries to get the reader to open up to concepts and approaches to visual situations and "see" differently. In other words, ponder the possibilities! The author does cover various equipment necessities and many fundamentals of "how-to" deal with certain situations. This book does deal with certain technical issues in an understandable, yet technical way. The book is not thick, and has many, well-done pictures and diagrams. I will confess to being a Wildi fan. His writings and ideas have been an inspiration to me, and anyone contemplating an investment in "thinking square" will find his concepts educational, no matter the equipment used. Buy this book!

Useful study on how to aviod strategic blunders.......2001-04-01

U. S. academic Dave Rogers wrote this book while based at the London Business School. It follows an earlier study on the US banking system. The focus here is on the so-called `Big Four' British commercial banks - Lloyds, Barclays, Natwest and Midland and in particular how they navigated their way through the radical restructuring of the banking system in the mid 1980s called the `Big Bang.'

Roger's interest is in explaining how the culture of organisations impacts on the strategies they develop. His work is not heavily quantitative and it is largely based on personal interviews with senior individuals in the banking sector. Most remarkable about the strategies of the Big Four in the 1990s was that three of them had no strategy at all. Barclays', Natwest and Midland raced to expand into providing a full range of financial and brokering services as soon as deregulation allowed. Cumulatively they lost billions of pounds, destroyed shareholder value and failed to achieve their aim of becoming international `global banking' firms. Lloyds was the only exception, choosing in the 1980s and 1990s to emphasis commercial (retail) banking and in the process becoming the most successful and highest capitalised of the British banks.

What was the key difference? In Roger's terms Lloyds' succeeded because they alone of the big four developed a rigorous strategic plan to direct their policies by emphasising doing only those things that made money. In contrast the big three spent hundreds of millions of pounds in doubtful acquisitions and disastrous loans, none of which were based on careful strategic planning. Copying behaviour, a competition to be `number one' in the UK and - one is forced to conclude - sheer stupidity led these banks into loosing billions.

Rogers is a very able writer and although an academic study his subject matter makes for fascinating reading. The book will be valuable to anyone interested in the importance of strategic planning and how it intersects with organisational culture. At this price, though, try getting your library to order a copy.

One of the Great Civil War Diaries.......2006-06-07

There are many diarries and personal recollections of the Civil War. There are a handful of these that rate as classic writings that can be used as reliable first hand accounts of the war, and this is one of them. Possibly the best diary from the Army of the Potomac. Great detail, well written and very intersting.

A Diary of Battle.......2002-10-28

Gets low marks for editing. The editor has excised parts he thinks are repetitive or boring, but in some cases these clearly dealt with the technical details of handling artillery, and would have been of great use to the reader.

The colonel of the 1st NY Artillery, Wainwright is interesting as an anti-abolitionist and a fan of McClellan up to the very end. His comment that he wouldn't trust Massachusetts or Pennsylvania not to secede if conditions were reversed (p. 207) is interesting, reflecting the strong allegiance to state in the North as well as the South. His views on the cynicism of abolitionists are intriguing as well; he believed that the radicals were deliberately prolonging the war to gain political power. His account of the fighting on Culp's Hill at Gettysburg is quite detailed.

In Discovering Birds, Paul Lawrence Farber rejects the view that eighteenth-century natural history disappeared with the rise of nineteenth-century biology. In this penetrating case study of the history of ornithology, Farber demonstrates interesting continuities: as natural history evolved into individual sciences (botany, geology, and zoology) and specialties (entomology and ichthyology), the study of birds emerged as a distinct scientific discipline that remained observational and taxonomic. Ornithologists continued to see one of their primary tasks as classification, and they found no need to alter their approach.

Their efforts were greatly aided at the end of the eighteenth century as colonization and exploration brought new dataa plethora of exotic and previously unknown birds. By the mid-nineteenth century, ornithology had become a scientific discipline with international experts, a large empirical base, and a rigorous methodology of watching and cataloging.
