shrigley is a witty and fun young scotish artist. he was essentially kicked out of the glasgow school of art for being too "cartoonish." his legacy lingered when i attended the school where cartoonish was not only accepted but encouraged. we can thank shrigley for allowing the wit of many of my classmates to be showcased and developed. shrigley was a ray of sunshine in the bleak scotish weather. i love this book personally but for a less expensive way to brighten your day buy any one of his books of postcards or invest in his other works. you won't be dissapointed.

          Book Description

History's first amateur photographers lived at the beginning of the 20th century, when photography was just one of many technologies that were dramatically altering the ways people related to themselves & to others. The people who lived in America then were part of social transformations of unprecedented scale. Technology dramatically altered the way they related to themselves & to others. Here, Chien has selected 89 images, printed on postcards & left by these anonymous photographers, weaving them together with beautifully crafted text to provide a poetic sketch of their lives & changing times. Their images lead us into an America not our own -- but one that we may recognize as part of us still -- about 85 years ago.

          5 out of 5 stars Ageless.......2003-02-02

After I finished the last page I found I was speechless. I read it once again and then I read it yet again. I think the author wanted the images he picked out to make us see people in the past that we could relate to. The images that we see in "85 years" show us people in the old Pacific Northwest that remind us of people we might see in our own neighborhood.. Instead of it looking B&W and faded they seem to take on a living hue in these photographs. You could esentially picture the scene. The people pictured were are all being themselves, and in a culture that is so youth oriented it is nice sometimes to be reminded that there are legions who have gone before us.

4 out of 5 stars Step into the daily past of ordinary folks..........1999-01-24

Contains beautiful day-in-the-life-of postcards from ordinary Pacific Northwest folk in the early 1900's. Author contributes a few sentences here and there to introduce the photos. It's more like looking at someone's photo album than a book -- light on words, heavy on postcards. But the photos are gold. Evoking a time and place long gone but not quite forgotten (thankfully). A must for anyone interested in real photo postcards of people, buildings, and social activities of the day.

            Book Description

The legitimate role of the state in relation to property and the justification of property institutions of various kinds are matters of increasing concern in the modern world. Political and social theorists, jurists, economists, and historians have taken positions for and against the property institutions upheld in their time by the state, and further dehate seems inevitable. This book brings together ten classic statements which set out the main arguments that are now appealed to and places them in historical and critical perspective.

The extracts presented here — all substantial - are from Loeke, Rousseau, Bentham, Marx, Mill, Green, Veblen, Tawney, Morris Cohen, and Charles Reich. A note hy the editor at the head of each extract highlights the arguments in it and relates it to the time at which it was written. Professor Macpherson's introductory and concluding essays expose the roots of some common misconceptions of property, identify current changes in the concept of property, and predict future changes. Macpherson argues that a specific change in the concept (which now appears possible) is needed to rescue liberal democracy from its present impasse.

Property is both a valuable text on a crucial topic in political and social theory and a significant contribution to the continuing debate

                Book Description

This is a work of historical critical exegesis. It aims to establish the influence of the Science of Logic (SL) of G.W.F. Hegel on the Grundrisse of Karl Marx. It is the first work in the history of Marx Studies to demonstrate that the Hegelian logic guided Marx's doctrinal development, and that the ordering of the logical categories in the SL is reflected in the ordering of economic categories in the Grundrisse. The Grundrisse are both a critique of political economy, and a critical appropriation of Hegel's SL.
Thus, the work establishes that Marx was cognizant of, and respected, the necessity of the development of Hegel's exposition of logical categories of scientific method. The Grundrisse can therefore be divided into three sections. Each is distinguished from the others based upon the peculiar logic that is used in the exposition of the particular subject matter that is treated in that section.
This work uses a particular form of historical critical exegesis that relies on "concept exegesis" ( Begriffsexegese). It attempts to establish that the ideas that are found in one text are related to ideas in another; and, to be more specific, that the logical form of one work is indebted to the logical form of another. The method that is used in concept exegesis is empirical. The text under scrutiny is first broken down into component parts, and further subdivided. The logical form of the argumentation in each part is isolated. It is then compared to the logical form of another text, for purposes of establishing an indebtedness.

                  Book Description

For years, consistent with its political and military policies, the American government has been feeding corporate America a line of malarkey about investing in Russia. To the extent convenient for its interests corporate America has been willing to listen, as long as the government GAVE them the money to make the investments with. Rare exceptions exist in oil and a few major industries. A few companies have sufficient money to 'buy" a foothold for the long term. It is not really an investment. It is an "ante' at the poker table, to have a seat. Russian bankers have realized this is not investment and that Russia cannot reconstruct its industrial output on the strength of these few billions. At the 1992 Yeltsin-Clinton Summit in Vancouver, during a discussion as to the amount that might be required, I suggested the figure $3 trillion dollars. president Yeltsin's response was. 'just about right".

The global corporate private business world knows well from market economy experience what it needs to conduct business in Russia and so do Russian bankers. Russian bankers have taken upon themselves the responsibility to act as catalysts in accomplishing this economic reconstruction. To do this Russian banks are undertaking the tasks of creating viable, reliable, dependable financial institutions to manage the currency of commerce which is the fertilizer of Russian economic life.

Both the Russian and U.S. government depend upon their populations for the financial support of the costs of government. The Russian banking industry understands that it is the people who support the government and not the governments that support the people. particularly in the United States it is the people who have the wealth upon which government is dependent for its survival. It is the banking industry's understanding that the essence of economic growth is to enable people to create and produce, that offers Russia its place in the the future global economy.

Russian banking is 'inventing' a new Russian social process for individual and small group entrepreneurial pioneering and providing people with new pathways for economic growth. Every decisive step in the history of economic development ha been the result of deliberate decisions to open up space and enable people to pioneer. This deliberate incubation of the free enterprise of ordinary people has always worked to produce great results. This is not nostalgic, not romantic, not greed. It is the simple principle of applying "opportunity" to the great driving hunger of millions of people to transcend their inadequate past

Many dwell on the negatives of this past which did exist. To proceed into the future, the Russian banking industry is finding and supporting the positive source of the strength of Russia: respect and enablement of the individual the "entrepreneurial' every-person, who collectively constitute "the unseen hand' of "the wealth of Russia", whose collective drive to transcend the past is the irreplaceable motive force of history.

Many in this generation have also written that the growth opportunity is gone forever. They would consign the Russian people to eternal political misery in grubbing over a perennially inadequate economic pie, which is constantly shrinking. far too "fashionable" are arguments that Russian resources are too limited, that Russian environment cannot handle rapid growth, and that most Russian must look forward to a diminishing quality of life in increasingly servile jobs. To these, the Russian banking industry says Humbug. These "reasoned arguments" are but the illusion of ignorance. Alignment with these arguments betrays the terrible struggle of Russian forebears to bequeath to Russia a world made more dignified for each and every individual.

The Russian banking industry believes that Russian resources are essentially unlimited and that for every obstacle there is a solution. It believes Russia has the capacity to re-entrepreneurialize all goods and services which have ever been made. In short it believes there are no arbitrary technical limits to Russian capacity for economic growth. Russian bankers believe it is true that they cannot grow the same way as in the past and that new ways must be found through which the limits of today can be transcended. Russian bankers believe that finding these ways is, in essence, the "job" of the Russian entrepreneur or, in its highest expression, the "profession" of the entrepreneur.

The task of Russian banking is to to design a coherent, integrated policy, a marketplace, if you will, for removing the barriers, all the barriers, to new venture formation, the principle one of which is trust.

Less than 30% of the population of Russia can presently make full use of its productive capabilities. The great entrepreneurial dilemma is reaching the point what sufficient tangible results have been created to interest formulae-oriented investment or loan capital. This in itself requires the Russian banking industry to act as spokesman for the Russian people in obtaining greater freedom, flexibility and logic in regulatory policies. As the Russian banking industry approaches the second decade of its participation in the development of a market economy it offers this description of its own pioneering efforts of the past decade. It is a blueprint motivated by hope and expectations which it dedicates to its customers, the Russian entrepreneur. Together they face the challenges of rebuilding Russia's economy.

Author drives home the need for preparation of script or outline. This book is not a pep talk nor does it have a motivational bent. It is well written. Did any of Ronald Reagan's speech writers not write a book. Different than most public speaking books, he leaves you to pick your own words and gestures for the most part. He focuses on being who you are and making the most of it. If you are a clear cut expert in the areas you intend to speak on this is the book for you because it is short and sweat and covers the critical basics without trying to make you over.

                    Book Description

The revised and expanded edition of Working Stiffs, Union Maids, Reds, and Riffraff offers 350 titles compared to the original edition's 150. The new book is global in scope, with examples of labor films from around the world. Viewers can turn to this comprehensive, annotated guide for films about unions or labor organizations; labor history; working-class life where an economic factor is significant; political movements if they are tied closely to organized labor; production or the struggle between labor and capital from a "top-down"—either entrepreneurial or managerial—perspective.

Each entry includes a critical commentary, production data, cast list, MPAA rating (if any), suggested related films, annotated references to books and websites for further reading, and information about availability of films for rental and/or purchase. This edition addresses both historical and contemporary films and features many more documentaries and hard-to-find information about agitprop and union-financed films. Working Stiffs, Union Maids, Reds, and Riffraff: An Expanded Guide to Films about Labor features fifty-eight production stills and frame enlargements. It also includes a greatly expanded Thematic Index of Films. Two new sections will help the reader discover labor films in chronological order or by nationality or affiliation with certain cinematic movements.

                        Book Description

"It is safe to write accurately only about the nuts and the bums." -Joseph Mitchell

Entering the Hotel Intercontinental in Amman, Jordan, is like entering an African safari lodge. You're just as likely to get into an argument over double-parking in the heart of Baghdad as you are on the streets of middle America. Seven hundred dollars in "assurances" might get you a room without a desk, bed, sink, toilet, carpet, lights, or even running water. And if you can't get a good quote through friendly conversation, swilling beer and trading insults generally helps.

These lessons, among others, are known to every seasoned correspondent. It takes an amateur, however, to take it all in-and truly appreciate how news stories get out from the war zone and onto the front page of The New York Times. In the spring of 2003, metro desk reporter Alan Feuer was sent to the Middle East to cover the U.S. invasion of Iraq. He was not alone: not only were forty correspondents from the Times dispatched, but hundreds of reporters from around the globe planned on locking step with the military, multitudes more following in their wake. This media swarm, along with the local opportunists, profiteers (zee Internet, anyone?), and "media fixers," are detailed here to brilliant, uncommonly funny effect.

Feuer shows to what extent improv, dirty jokes, slang, drinks, sarcasm, finger-pointing, more drinks, cheekiness, and notes taken down on missing pads have to do with the news we get. He also offers a profoundly fascinating-and morally serious-examination of one's responsibility to the truth, to one's country, and to the fear, pride, and ambivalence that inform every conflict, military or otherwise. Over There tells it all with a candor bordering on recklessness, and marks the debut of a major new literary voice.

"There is 'going to war' and going to war. Between the two exists an experiential chasm. Some journalists, in their inevitable accounts of 'going to war,' have blurred what, exactly, this difference is. But Alan Feuer understands the difference; indeed, this gripping, wonderful, and morbidly hilarious book is about that difference. One imagines it required real courage to write a charming, funny book about a charmless, tragic war, and genuine moral vision to do so without one speck of bullshit." -Tom Bissell, author of Chasing the Sea and God Lives in St. Petersburg

"There will likely be dozens, if not hundreds, of memoirs written by reporters who covered the war in Iraq. It's a safe bet though that this one will stand apart from most of the rest. . . . This is one war memoir that demands to be read." -Booklist

"Engaging . . . memorable. . . Feuer's first book helps us understand how the image of war is crafted, and for that alone it is welcome." -Kirkus Reviews

"A perceptive insider's account . . . It's also a trenchant, at times self-lacerating critique of the media itself and its shallowness and isolation . . . [written with] novelistic density and introspection." -Publishers Weekly

4 out of 5 stars I really liked this book.......2005-08-24

I found it very interesting to read this book! I have to say, I was delighted in his writing style, it made me laugh and think, and if he writes another book, I will buy it because I liked his style. It was very interesting to read a reporter write about what he (as a reporter) thought and did, especially in mid-war. How often do we get first hand accounts of the ins and outs of being a reporter? I had no idea how much lag time they suffered, nor had I thought about how intrusive the media can be, with the goal of telling a story to the world.I liked it!

1 out of 5 stars Aims high. Falls flat........2005-08-04

This author is obviously enamored with Hemingwayesque prose, but unfortunately it comes off in a sophomoric and self-absorbed way. I wish that he had more to say about the war and less to say about himself.

5 out of 5 stars Crossing lines rather than behind the lines .......2005-08-02

"Three journalists have died in Baghdad. . . American troops are killing journalists in a profoundly foreign country, under cover of a war being fought for savage, greed-crazed reasons that most of them couldn't explain or even understand."

This is a quote from the late "Gonzo Journalist" Hunter Thompson, and Alan Feuer's book captures the same sentiments. A reporter is nothing more than a voyeur, Thompson has said repeatedly, and in this New York Times reporter's case, he has peeped on the underworld of the Bronx Mafia by eavesdropping in Cafes on Arthur Avenue and peeped into the shanty tents of the homeless camped out under the Throgs Neck Bridge. Then he is sent to Bagdad - and thrust into the chaos and confusion of a war he barely understands himself. "Over There," is not a book about the ill-named "Operation Iraqi Freedom" because the author (TR) admittedly does not spend enough time in Iraq to label himself a war correspondent. It is instead a book about a journalist who is parachuted into a gritty warzone and finds himself confronting the same greedy motives he has found covering the mob, dirty CEOs, and hardscrabble, down-on-their luck thieves, back in NYC. It is also a look at the politics of the world's most respected paper and may prompt some high-brow readers who sniff they "only read the Times" to take the hardscrabble reporting of other newspapers just as seriously, if not more so.

                        4 out of 5 stars A Unique Perspective on a Mismanaged War.......2005-07-06

Due to the DOD's brilliant policy of "embedding" reporters, there have been very few books written by reporters discussing there view of the war in Iraq. (Where are you David Halberstam?)I was glad to see that Mr. Feuer was brave enough to write about his experience covering the war. Mr. Feuer's book is a classic fish out of water story. He writes an amusing, sarcastic and insightful book about his experience. His book does a great job capturing "T.R's" feelings as he unexpectedly finds himself in the action in Jordan and Iraq. If you are looking for a book that discusses the failures of journalists to adequately cover the war, this isn't the book for you. If you are looking for a great story about one man's journey into a confusing and awful situation, then buy this book.

This is nothing but poorly written drivel. A friend in publishing gave it to me. I am so glad I didn't pay for it. Amateur writing coupled with a huge ego. Bleah.
