    Book Description

The ideas and writings of famed architect Le Corbusier on modern furnishings, houses, and cities are still, 35 years after his death, persuasive and extremely influential. He considered the objects of daily life (a built-in cabinet, a chair, a bottle) as "tools," elements whose form and function could be rationally resolved. His own furniture, designed in collaboration with Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand, was based on strict conceptions of utility and typology that nevertheless resulted in elegant and luxurious pieces. Le Corbusier: Inside the Machine for Living, a focused exploration of the furniture and interiors of Le Corbusier, sheds new light on a relatively little-studied aspect of the great Swiss-French architectís career.

Le Corbusier's rational approach was modulated by human experience and had a poetic and complex relationship to the built and furnished environment. George H. Marcus's authoritative text analyzes this relationship as it informed Le Corbusier's domestic interiors and furnishings, from the revolutionary Esprit Nouveau pavilion of 1925 and the celebrated villas La Roche and Savoye to the controversial unitÈ d'habitation in Marseilles. Marcus also details the seminal pieces of furniture created by Le Corbusier's studio (including the famed grand confort armchair and chaise lounge) documenting the conditions surrounding their conceptualization and design. Extensively illustrated with new color photography, archival photography, and the architect's sketches and drawings, Le Corbusier: Inside the Machine for Living offers fresh insight into the achievement of this 20th-century master.

4 out of 5 stars Review of Looking at Prints, Drawings and Watercolours.......2007-08-26

This is an informative glossary containing terms pertinent to works of art on paper but as the author Paul Goldman notes the book only briefly treats photomechanical processes and contemporary trends in printmaking. The illustrations are all drawn from the Getty Museum or the British Museum collections so readers can go directly to the online digital sites at those institutions for more information. This make the book valuable as an introductory text for a course on the History of Prints and Drawings. It is also a "must read" for emerging collectors and for art lovers who desire a deeper appreciation of the complexities of the graphic arts. Used in conjunction with Linda C. Hults, The Print in the Western World (U. of Wisconsin Press) and Ursula Weekes, Techniques of Drawing (Woodstocker Books) it provides a sound overview. Unfortunately the book omits some important terms and slights the history of paper making, but again it is a handy reference and not a definitive one. While the bibliography will point readers to many valuable printed resources, a list of relevant web sites would be a useful addition. The book is printed on quality paper and the binding appears sturdy. The second edition contains basic information on conservation issues. Those seeking more information on prints should consult the website at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (N.Y.) which gives extensive technical information and many digital examples. Lynne N. Reno, Assistant Professor, Edinboro University, Edinboro, Pa.

3 out of 5 stars OK, but hardly complete.......2007-08-04

What's here is good material. It lists a fair range of terms used in art on paper, with many reproductions of art showing the effects of different tools or materials. The book itself if well printed, on heavy paper that shows the sample artworks very clearly. And, as a parting benefit, it offers a helpful bibliography.

It's what's not here that's the problem. A book twice this size might have been adequate for either drawing or watercolor, and a printmaking would have needed a lot more than that by itself. What's here is good, but possibly not enough to justify this book for most collections.

4 out of 5 stars more, and less, than I expected.......2002-01-02

I had hoped this book would incorporate aesthetics with art history, but that is not quite the author's intent. Instead, it is similar to a dictionary, being a 63-page volume of alphabetically arranged technical definitions, from aquatint to wood-engraving. It is also more than a dictionary, having more than 60 examples to illustrate techniques and methods.

This book is neither historical nor biographical in focus, but you will learn a great deal of technical information.

        Book Description

In this exotic, boldly colorful book, famed photographer Hans Silvester points his lens at the inhabitants of a remote village in northwest India to create an engrossing view of a vanishing culture. From his marvelous photographs and from Catherine Clément's poetic and provocative essay emerges a moving portrait of a people—especially the women—who have little, yet appear to have found great personal freedom.

Living in houses made of earth and thatched with straw, with no running water or electricity, the women of this sand village in the harsh Thar Desert still manage to adorn themselves and their homes in a dazzling palette of colors that reflects their inner joy. This engrossing view of a never-before-photographed people will engage anyone interested in India or women's issues.

4 out of 5 stars History and Banking Education.......2004-08-03

Yes -- the book IS long and sometimes excruciatingly painful in detail, but it presents material from the mid-1800's to 1990s. Most emphasis is 1960s-1980s. So, give yourself a lot of leadtime! If you want a book for its perspective on a parcel of American History, its a great educational tool to understand the evolution of Banking, particularly Post-WWII Fed policies, Glass-Stegall,the battle for laissez-faire regulation, and related internal management challenges to business development. But if you want a book that gives current insights or reads like promotional materials from Goldman Sach's "The Culture of Success" and "House of Morgan", its downright uninspiring and lacks any heart-pounding climax like a biography or fiction. The writer's large volume of work is matched by his understanding of management and banking jargon and issues. For instance, he understands matrix'ed management structures, credit approval processes, and reasons for organizational resistance to external consultants like McKinsey. He also avoids protraying, as model-citizens or perfect CEOs, Wriston or Reed, who probably gave their cooperation to the book. One could argue that his version of root causes to problems like Penn Central or CREI were incorrect, but equally, one would agree that his facts were mostly complete. His style of writing is better than recent books such as Enron's "Smartest Guys in the Room" and others which are written by magazine/newspaper journalists -- which read like an extended articles. However, he does succumb to problems in overlapping info that seem redundant at times -- probably needed more cross-chapter-reference editing. In summary, I'm buying this book for that part on my book shelf covering American History. Its not going into the shelf with Forbes, Peter Drucker, or Jack Welch. Citibank has had a wonderful place in American Capitalism and History as a leading-edge bank with entrepreneurial talent and limitless ambitions -- like those others that have made our country great. The book is a testament to the competitive spirit of America and success driven by people unafraid to fail but always willing to try.

Too long, too boring and poorly written. I had hoped that this would be an interesting history and Walter Wriston. Instead, I found it to be a self-serving saga of an insecure man.

1 out of 5 stars Overlong, lacking in analysis and insight.......1998-11-24

This ponderous tome provides is a lengthy assemblage of facts about Wriston, but fails to offer very much in the way of insight or analysis.

                    Book Description

"They flirted with men, and with death." In The Women Who Lived for Danger, acclaimed historian Marcus Binney recounts the story of ten remarkable women -- some famous, some virtually unknown -- recruited to work behind enemy lines as secret agents during WWII. Part of Winston Churchill's Special Operations Executive, formed in 1940 to "set Europe ablaze," the women of the SOE were trained to handle guns and explosives, work undercover, endure interrogation by the Gestapo, and use complex codes. Once in enemy territory, theirs was the most dangerous war of all, leading an apparently normal civilian life but in constant danger of arrest and execution. Passing themselves off as country wenches by afternoon and chic Parisiennes by night, these women put service to Britain and the Allied forces above all concerns for personal safety -- they organized dropping grounds for arms and explosives destined for the Resistance, helped operate escape lines for airmen who had been shot down over Europe, and provided Allied Command with vital intelligence.

The exploits of those chronicled in The Women Who Lived for Danger form a new chapter of heroism in the history of warfare matched only by their legacy of daring, determination, resourcefulness, and ability to stay cool in the face of extreme danger.

It has been said that 'it is through what we risk that we find out who we are and what we are made of'. This book demonstrates in detail the strengths of women who took extreme risks in the course of carrying out duties as agents in occupied countries and in doing so proved what they were made of. What makes these women so interesting is that they had the ability to turn what generally started out as an exciting adventure, into a job that had to be done. They could be so confident, strong, communicative and sometimes seductive while on a mission. Unlike men who play to win, these women played not to lose and it is this ability that most impressed me. Even when being put under pressure as events closed in on them they were able to remain totally engaged in what they were doing. Give me a Virginia Hall or a Noor Khan any day -or- in todays world give me a Hillary or Condoleeza!

I read this history having some background; while he does cover the facts, the battles and dates and so on, he has what I'd characterize as a disdain for non-European culture, and while the glory of the caliphate was in the 7-11th century, he sort of quickly closes out the recent history without much depth or understanding.

                              Book Description

"A longtime hunter in the coastal range of Oregon takes stock of his favorite prey, the band-tailed pigeon," reported The New York Times in the summer of 2003. What made Worth Mathewson's writing about the western wilderness pigeon newsworthy is not his elegant evocation of the damp, spicy scent of a Pacific Northwest river valley or his keen observations of bandtails flying high and fast over a canyon. Rather the press took note of an avid hunter blaming overhunting and bad management for the devastation of a species. Wary by nature yet brave under fire, the magnificent bandtail has long thrilled the sportsman. Some attribute the bird's decline to habitat loss, but Mathewson, in this complete natural history, carefully builds his case to the contrary. While trichomoniasis and spraying of broadleaf trees may contribute, the human factor is paramount: a persistently callous attitude toward Patagioenas fasciata may keep it in a downward spiral. If modest protections are lifted at the first signs of recovery, its fate may be sealed. With drawings by noted wildlife artist David Hagerbaumer, color photographs by the author and Margaret Thompson Mathewson, and an extensive bibliography, this finely rendered, affecting portrait of a wild bird with a troubled past is nothing short of a call to action.

I love the way the band tailed pigeon spreads its wings, upside down, and clings form the branches of trees if it thinks that's the best way to catch a recalcitrant berry or acorn. The author, who took almost thirty years to write this book, knows his stuff, and he interviews old folks, some born as far back as the 1800's, to gather their memories of a long-forgotten day when the "blue rock" pigeon was as common as an ordinary housefly. One dignified elderly lady remembers trying to avoid flocks of bandtails because her horse would get a-skeered of their sudden movements in the cane. Matthewson is not only a hunter, but he knows the other side of the story too. As Shakespeare says, the Canadian woods are becoming "bare ruined choirs where late the sweet birds sang." Not that the blue rock was ever famous for its singing voice! But those who have heard the rustle of its wings would not exchange that experience for a whole host of Renata Tebaldis.

The pigeons in question are sometimes mistaken for parrots or parakeets, based on their strange manipulative powers. They can grab just about anything and wrest it away, like taking candy from a baby. If they have been able to survive, even when a whole nation of hunters were given carte blanche to decimate them. Now, with overhunting, only a few remain, and every time you see them in action it's a red letter day.

Mathewson proffers his opinion, delivered in his casually understated way, that "Overall, in my opinion, an adult male bandtail on an emerald green Douglas fir bough is about as beautiful a bird as the Northwest has to offer." May I say that out of all the angler naturalists who are still writing handbooks, that a good passage by Worth Mathewson is about as inspiring a paragraph as the Public Library has to offer you. The bandtail, however, isn't even his favorite looking pigeon (that honor goes to the white crown pigeon, the placid bird my grandfather used to refer to as the "chef with the white hat"). Buy this one together with his famous biography of the rogue wildlife photographer, William Finley.
