Rather, institutional features of the polity and the welfare state determine the extent to which the economic and political pressures associated with globalization produce Welfare state retrenchment.

This book argues that the post-1970 rise in international capital mobility has not contributed to the retrenchment of developed welfare states. Nor has globalization reduced the revenue-raising capacities of governments and undercut the political institutions that support the welfare state. Rather, institutional features of the polity and the welfare state determine the extent to which the economic and political pressures associated with globalization produce welfare state retrenchment. In systems characterized by electoral institutions, social corporatist interest representation and policy-making, centralized political authority, and social insurance-based program structures, pro-welfare state interests are favored. In nations characterized by majoritarian electoral institutions, pluralist interest representation and policy-making, decentralization of policy-making authority, and liberal program structure, the economic and political pressures attendant on globalization are translated into rollbacks of social protection. Globalization has had least impact on large welfare states of Northern Europe and most effect on small welfare states of Anglo nations.

This elegantly written book argues against the conventional wisdom that prevails in academic and official circles. According to this essentially neo-classical theory, the rate of interest depends solely on the amount of savings with respect to investment needs. It is implied that the level of interest rates is not an economic policy problem but a fact of `nature' - unpleasant, perhaps, but unalterable in the short term without heavy costs. The alternative perspective offered in this book is a Keynesian one, in which the explanation of economic facts can never be separated from the role of economic policy. This view posits interest rates as a `conventional' phenomenon, rooted in perceptions and expectations of the financial markets. That is, they are self-fulfilling rather than inescapable costs. The essential economic facts of the last twenty years bear out the truth of the Keynesian approach to interest rates, and are at odds with neo-classical (Fisher-Wicksell) theory. The implication, then, is that the world is not condemned to a high rate of interest, with the risk of low investment, rising public indebtedness, stagnation, and unemployment. Conscious economic policies, coordinated at the international level, are capable of turning this largely conventional price towards non-inflationary growth. Such policies are necessary if the world is to come out of recession.

Best IMF/Bank Case Study.......2007-08-09

This book was somewhat difficult for me to get through, however, the knowledge taken is priceless. When it comes to the activities of the IMF and World Bank, this is the best case study out there. Even beginners will take a lot from the book, both by the book's brief, explicit explanation of the origin and function of the two multilateral organizations and by the reader's ability to carefully treat this instance as a microcosm for other IMF and Bank activities. Broad uses tons of internal documents and accounts to compile a great sense of the Fund's and Bank's activities in the Philipines, but also to show that this happens everywhere.

Developing nations seeking independence from major world powers in post-WWII had two options: either become communistic or industrialize as fast as possible. For the countries that chose the second option, they had to either nationalize industry (which has often led them to be called communistic, if the nationalizing hurts Western interests) and/or take out loans to cover the industrializing. Broad shows how the functions of the IMF and Bank have changed over time, so that they became the ones dishing out these loans,however, with conditions attached. According to the IMF and Bank these conditions have been attached to increase "competition" so that developing nations can enter into the world market, however, Broad does well pointing out the falacies of the policies used to make the Philipines "competitive," as well as the collateral damage (especially to lower wage workers). The IMF and Bank have a one-size-fit-all solution to every developing nation, regardless of different political economies and in general these solutions seem to support a more western world order.

Also mentioned is the impact this had on the fall of Marcos, and although published in 1988, the reader can contextualize the political change that occurred shortly thereafter (specifically the expulsion of the U.S. from the island in 1992).

Adaptation: The Way Wars are Won.......2007-07-24

Although only 50 pages in length, these books are enough to fuel the imagination and tell you about planes with enough detail that you feel like you understand a little more on the arifights that went on during WWII (or other actions, depending on the books you pick up). The "in action" books are good that way - they give you a synopsis of the plane that includes a (1) a why, (2) a when, (3) a where - as in the theatre of combat, and even (4) the how much. The B-25(NA-62) contract that was award was worth 11.771 million dollars, for instance, and called for 184 airplanes. You then have the models that were available - basically adding in the upgrades - and you have other information that adds up until you know quite a bit about one flying machine.

I personally liked that because I always have liked the sky.

Another thing the book has are pictures, lots of pictures, showing you the machine as it does its thing. Each model of it is represented, many of which have been personalized by crews to give them that "bombed in" sheen, plus explanations that one needs when they want to know things like "what is a ventral turret" or "what is a dorsal turret." I enjoyed these so much because they go along with my footage on various wars and on what was there and what it did, with some pictures even showing the planes low-flying across bodies of water or skimming mountains to stay low. Combine this with color montages on what they would've looked like (which is good because of all the black and white footage presented in video formats and even in this book) and you have a great deal of understanding on the machine you are looking at.

While this is only 50 pages and it is lorded over by pictures, you have to remember that this is only one machine being looked at and the different models of it that found their way into battle. So, you have a lesser variant of the microscope, but more depth than you would ever get if you were simply flipping through a book on war. Even a book of vehicles wouldn't show so much depth, so it really is interesting IF this is what you are into.
I found it refreshing and, along with books that cover aircraft, armor, weapons, and warships, a way to gain a more complete picture than I really thought possible.
Very underestimated and well worth a look.

Fine "In Action" title........2006-11-16

Typical of this publishers In Action series. Good photographic coverage with basic text describing different versions of the aircraft; all for a reasonable price. It's certainly not meant to be the final word on the B-25 but it is a good introduction.
