    Book Description

"This fresh look at Los Angeles is clearly framed as a study whose subject has national implications... Magnetic Los Angeles is the first authoritative study we have on how the professionalization of planning... affected practice, on how the idea of decentralization became a major force in shaping the environment, and on the intricate details of the process of community building... Hise underscores how rich a yield studying Los Angeles can bring." -- Richard Longstreth, American Studies International

Magnetic Los Angeles challenges the widely held view of the expanding twentieth-century city as the sprawling product of dispersion without planning and lacking any discernable order. Using Los Angeles as a case study, Greg Hise argues that the twentieth-century metropolitan region is the product of conscious planning -- by policy makers, industrialists, design professionals, community builders, and homebuyers -- in direct response to political and economic conditions of the 1920s and the Depression, the defense emergency, and the immediate postwar years.

"Hise postulates a thesis that is as revolutionary as it is straightforward... Hise's narrative is well written and clearly structured, as he nimbly guides the reader through various informational thickets... Magnetic Los Angeles is bound to initiate a whole new direction in planning research." -- Robert Wojtowicz, Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians

"Hise has written a fascinating history of L.A. and the thought process behind its developments. He deflates the myth that this megalopolis grew without rhyme or reason." -- Jack Kyser, Los Angeles Times

"This is an important book and should be read by anyone interested in the history of the city, the homebuilding industry, and the twentieth-century western landscape." -- Stuart McElderry, Western Historical Quarterly

"Hise's synthetic perspective is state-of-the-art: he breaks important new ground in the analysis of metropolitan structure... [and] affords us an alternative view of postwar urbanization, one that can easily be translated to other urban settings." -- Robert Hodder, Journal of Planning Education and Research

"A welcome and bracing dose of reality." -- Harold Henderson, Planning

"Hise makes a compelling case for L.A. as a product of middle-class dispersal from disquieting ethnic centers, the Progressive Era's proselytism of the social hygiene in suburbs, [and] 50 years of federal housing policy based on home ownership and segregation." -- D. J. Waldie, Los Angeles Times

5 out of 5 stars Thoreau and Gatsby Toast Rattazzi.......2000-08-09

Priscilla Rattazzi's beautiful little book celebrates the simple joy of family, ocean, sun and sand which originally attracted New Yorkers to the Hamptons and which still exert a much more fundamental attraction than bimbos, Boxters and benefits. Rattazi captures the passage of the seasons over Georgica where the force of the hurricane surge, the frozen pond in winter, the dawn bending of the bayman over his eel traps resonate far more deeply than the mansions which hunker over the banks of the pond.

                        Book Description

The author examines the theory and practice of government interventions in the financial sector of two newly industrializing countries, Brazil and South Korea. Findings from this study help to explain the widespread use of such interventions despite the generally negative predictions (of inefficiencies and general failure) which derive from more prominent and traditional theories. This work contributes a political-economic exploration of how, when, and what kinds of financial regulations can be successful. Historical and institutional analysis of the use of capital controls, credit controls, and economic planning in Brazil and the Republic of Korea illuminate the ways in which strategic use of specific financial controls facilitate these countries's efforts to industrialize rapidly, and solve the problems of capital creation, productivity, preservation, and disciplined management.

From the supplier: Statistics from the Bureau of Labor show tightening competition among home improvement store applicants. The bureau reports that 1.8 million retailing jobs will be available for the period 1994-2005, but for 1994 alone, 3.8 million salespeople were employed. In addition, although there were three million cashiers in 1994 alone, only 1.8 million jobs will be available for the period 1994-2005. Competition for the most productive retail sales personnel, clerks, cashiers and even key retail managers is expected to further escalate.

                                        Book Description

The purpose of this volume is to seek out, describe, and explain the shared commonalities of stress, fatigue, and workload. To understand and predict human performance response, we have to reach beyond the sterile, information-processing models to incorporate the emotive, affective, or more generally, energetic aspects of cognition. These facets of behavior surface most readily when the individual acts under stress, is faced by significant cognitive workload, or is in the grip of fatigue. However, energetic characteristics are pervasive and exert a vital and ubiquitous influence, even when they are not obviously in play as in extreme circumstances. Indeed, one cannot hope to understand behavior without their inclusion and integration into models and theories. This text addresses such theoretical questions as one of its main thrusts. However, in addition to the drive for scientific understanding, there are requirements in our progressively more utilitarian society which generate the need for a more fundamental understanding of this particular topic.

                                            Book Description

A report from the front lines of the dating world-Stacy Kravetz goes undercover in search of the soul of love.

With the abundance of dating strategies, technologies, and services available on the market today, is it any easier to find love? In this hilarious and heart-warming book, Stacy Kravetz samples the merchandise and discovers that-impressive technological advances aside-the search for true love is never simple.

From "lock and key" parties, where men try their keys in women's locks until-well, you get the picture-to "date doctors," who, for a fee, will evaluate your techniques and tell you where your sales pitch is going wrong, Kravetz takes readers on a fascinating tour of the world of twenty-first-century romance. Drawing on interviews with a host of men and women currently grappling with finding a mate, as well as her own experiences out in the playing field, Kravetz explores what our dating lives reveal about us and our culture. And all the while, she vividly captures how-though the landscape of love is forever changing -the human heart remains a wildly mysterious thing.

3 out of 5 stars It would've been more objective had she been single..........2006-04-18

I do agree that it was silly of her to go "undercover" in the dating scene when she was married and could only go so far in her "research." However, I did find the book hilarious. Whether hearing about nutcase dating coaches like "Rhonda," and silly seminars on flirting, it cracked me up. It was disappointing that the book made people who needed "help" in dating come off as "losers" for partaking in these methods...the book would've been better if it focused more on the pros and cons of these methods as opposed to just knocking them all.

                                            2 out of 5 stars So what's the point?.......2005-05-10

I don't get this book at all.
A married woman, who has no intention whatsoever of finding a real date, or a getting into a real relationship, or meeting anyone by being truthful, decides to "investigate" all kinds of ways/means to date?

She's rather condescending about the people she lies to in order to reel them in and get them to share their stories. Everything she tells them about "herself" is untrue from the get-go-- perhaps the intelligent men sensed a total liar and treated her as such.

This book was dry, boring, very smug, and offered no real insight into anything. Her point is what? That it's hard to meet someone you like? That all single people out there trying to meet someone nice are all a bunch of losers?

Well, I suppose if you're a married woman and aren't really "looking" but rather, working on a little science project, your results may not pan out. Hey----I'll write a book on bungee jumping, though I have NO intention of ever actually doing it.

I've seen much better articles on this topic in a typical woman's magazine, without the smugness, without the disdain for singles, and without the hypocritical attitude.

Here's yet another case of two reviewers (C. Robertson and Jason Galvin) creating an Amazon account to write rave 5-star reviews on this book, and this book ONLY, no other books prior, and no other books since. How strange. But what will be stranger is that there will be another 5-star review posted about 3 days after mine, guaranteed.

This was a library book (no cost to me), and with so many other "relationship" or "self-help" books on dating available, you can skip this one.

                                            5 out of 5 stars A great read.......2005-03-14

Stacy Kravetz has done a fine job of keeping me entertained, which I believe were her intentions. I did not pick this book up believing it was a "how to" guide, and it is not. Rather, it is an insider's perspective of the modern trial and tribulations of dating. I laughed out loud on several occasions, thought 'wow' at certain points, and overall truly enjoyed this quick read. My hat's off to the author for putting together a fine piece of work.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Miss The Dating Race.......2005-02-01

Stacey Kravetz's The Dating Race gives the reader - whether a former, current or future dater - an inside view of the dizzying array of options available to those seeking that special someone. Consistently entertaining and unexpectedly poignant, The Dating Race shows us that the modern obsession with maximizing options often creates the very anxiety it is supposed to allay. Interspersed with the deadpan descriptions of Kravetz's undercover adventures in modern dating-including her hilarious encounters with personal coaches and professional matchmakers-are the real stories of earnest singles. But where a less deft writer might have resorted to irony or even sarcasm, Kravetz tells their stories with compassion. Told with great verve, The Dating Race is a very funny book about our most serious personal pursuit.

                                              Book Description

Can we achieve justice during war? Should law substitute for realpolitik? Can an international court act against the global community that created it?

Justice in a Time of War is a translation from the French of the first complete, behind-the-scenes story of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, from its proposal by Balkan journalist Mirko Klarin through recent developments in the trial of Slobodan Miloševic. It is also a meditation on the conflicting intersection of law and politics in achieving justice and peace.

Le Monde's review (November 3, 2000) of the original edition recommended Hazan's book as a nuanced account of the Tribunal that should be a must-read for the new leaders of Yugoslavia. "The story Pierre Hazan tells is that of an institution which, over the course of the years, has managed to escape in large measure from the initial hidden motives and manipulations of those who created it (and not only the Americans)."

With insider interviews filling out every scene, Hazan tells a chaotic story of war that raged while the Western powers cobbled together a tribunal in order to avoid actual intervention. The international lawyers and judges for this rump world court started with nothing--but they ultimately established the tribunal as an unavoidable actor in the Balkans. The West had created the Tribunal in 1993, hoping to threaten international criminals with indictment and thereby force an untenable peace. In 1999, the Tribunal suddenly became useful to NATO countries as a means by which to criminalize Miloševic's regime and to justify military intervention in Kosovo and in Serbia. Ultimately, this hastened the end of Miloševic's rule and led the way to history's first war crimes trial of a former president by an international tribunal.

Hazan's account of the Tribunal's formation and evolution questions the contradictory policies of the Western powers and illuminates a cautionary tale for the reader: realizing ideals in a world enamored of realpolitik is a difficult and often haphazard activity.

                                                          Book Description

New World Blackbirds is a comprehensive guide to the 103 members of the family Icteridae, also known as the icterids or troupials. The icterids are a diverse family, ranging throughout the Americas from Alaska to the Caribbean and south to Cape Horn. Despite the name "blackbird," the group contains such highly colored birds as the orioles. It includes common and intensively studied species--the Red-winged Blackbird and the Brown-headed Cowbird, for example--and such rare and obscure birds as the Colombian Mountain-Grackle and the Montserrat and Martinique Orioles. Two species in the family, the Selva Cacique and the Pale-eyed Blackbird, were not described at all until as recently as the 1960s and 1970s.

The thirty-nine highly detailed plates in this book depict all the species and many subspecies and age types never illustrated before. The book also contains over one hundred color range maps as well as black-and-white illustrations to aid identification. The extensive text summarizes the characteristics and natural history of each species, giving details on behavior, nesting, geographic variation, distribution, vocalizations, and in-depth plumage descriptions for all age types. Clearly written and exhaustively researched, this book will be the standard reference work for this major family of birds.

I found this book very easy to read, the information just flowed from the pages. My interest in Blackbirds has been sparked and I'm eagerly awaiting the next book by this great team of authors. Mr. Burke's illustrations were uncanny and Mr Jaramillo's writting clearly reflects a vast knowledge of the Icterids. I highly recommend this book.
