Book Description

Mies van der Rohe ranks alongside Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier as one of the most influential and important architects of our century. He was not only an accomplished and groundbreaking architect but also a first-rate, long-term lecturer and organiser of architectural events. It is thanks to his most important European building projects, the German pavilion for the Barcelona World Fair (1929) and the Villa Tugendhat in Brno that modern architecture was able to emerge from his experimental phase into full maturity. This book documents Mies van der Rohe's oeuvre as furniture designer and architect in the context of his three major European projects in Stuttgart, Barcelona, Brno.

5 out of 5 stars God is in the work of Mies van der Rohe.......2001-03-05

Okay, si I'm biased. My ideal home would be something like the Farnsworth House with all the furniture designed for the Barcelona expo.

So, for me, this is an excellent book which acts as a showpiece for the selected works of the timeless brilliance of Mies van der Rohe.

The book covers his architectural, interior design and furniture design work with a fairly balanced distribution of illustrations and written content.

5 out of 5 stars Women of Candelaria.......2005-05-26

If you enjoy the Guatemalan hand woven fabric, then this is a must read. The author takes us into the daily lives of these women living in a small mountain village. Included are beautiful photos of each woman and her story. Also are several photos of the village children, animals, and more. Reading each person's story is fascinating and surprising. These Guatemalan women have incrediable endurance, strength and courage. Yet with their hard lives, they still somehow make time to weave threads into beautiful designs as their way to express the artist and beauty within themselves.

          5 out of 5 stars A Workable Vision of A Better Society.......2004-04-24

Yet another great book from Robin and Michael decribing a post-capitalist economic system which avoids the pitfalls of market socialism and is more in-depth and coherent than other post-capitalist economic visions (guild socialism, anarcho-syndicalism, etc.).

I highly recommend this book, along with all of Albert and Hahnel's other works.

Also, I'd like to respond to the previous reviewer's horrified proclamation that "this study involves the author's absolute ignorance regarding the freedom of musicians and artists." In actuality, both Albert and Hahnel have written extensively about this particular problem. Both authors have differing viewpoints in regard to the role of artists in a participatory economy.

Albert says, basically, that the work of an artist should be treated like any other kind of work. And they should have balanced job complexes just like everyone else (gasp!). They must, in the previous reviewer's words, "participate in menial, rote labour in an effort to further enrich society as a whole and close the gaps between [classes]."

Yeah? And? Doesn't that just make sense? If we want an egalitarian society, we can't have certain individuals doing all the meaningless, rote tasks and others living lives filled with enriching and empowering work.

Albert replies to the question of whether "parecon would limit individual artistic creativity by what art to produce by referendum or committee"...

"Do you think this because artists, like producers of vehicles, get resources to work with (outputs of other people's efforts) or are allotted income for their work (and a claim on the social product) only insofar as their work, overall, is respected in the economy? I don't see why.In fact, quite the contrary. By (1) elevating diversity and self management parecon greatly promotes exploration and attitudes conducive to it, and (2) by allocating resources and tools and time self-consciously, it removes the impact of power or misdistribution of (voting rights) on the allocations, reducing the built-in tendency for "popularity" to outweigh "innovation" without any real assessment being made of the value of innovation. If you mean to point out that it would be within the purview of society to decree that some type innovation is unwanted or unlikely to be successful and that resources shouldn't be given over to it - yes, that is true - for art as for innovation in, say, how to electrocute people better, or for that matter, how to make better ladders, say, or whatever. But the assumption that in a parecon the population would not want musical and artistic innovation pursued by those with talents and creativity, in their own manner as they evolve their dispositions and talents, seems to me very very dubious. I should think the opposite would be true, overwhelmingly. What people currently like would be part of the issue in parecon - for sure. But it isn't the whole of it, as you are about to indicate, I bet. For one thing, smaller groups can like things a lot, making them very worthwhile even though not widely appreciated. But also, at a moment in time, much of what is pursued - not only in art, but in many dimensions of life, say science, engineering experimentation, etc. - is not yet appreciated beyond those who are trying to explore it (maybe not even entirely by them). Art is not special in this respect, in fact. So there is need for exploration and elaboration of art, music, and ideas and information and innovation more generally, that moves out beyond where taste currently is. Sure. But there is nothing about parecon that precludes or even impedes this relative to any other model I am aware of, much less capitalism...quite the contrary. Imagine a workplace for musicians. Society respects this workplace and includes it as part of the economy because it values music, including innovation. To work at this institution (and in different parecons we can imagine different instances, etc.) one has to be hired which likely entails demonstrating certain knowledge, talent, etc. The institution's budget is allocated internally to various activities, by its members, and therefore certainly not only to what a mass audience outside already likes. It really isn't much different in that respect than a workplace investigating new products, if you think about it."

So, I don't think they are ignorant of this problem. I think their solution simply makes sense, in a better economy. By the way, you don't submit your art to "the masses" but, instead, to committees of your fellow artists (whereas, in capitalism, you have to submit it to publishers, record labels, etc... who are generally only concerned with making a profit).

          Anyway, buy the book.

          5 out of 5 stars Anarchist visions..........2000-06-26

Looking Forward is the introductory manifesto of the participatory economics movement. The book is meant to give anarchists, socialist-libertarians, and idealists in general a positive alternative to capitalism, centralized economies, and market socialism.

It is always interesting how one can draw comparisons between the far right and the far left. Milton Friedman, in Capitalism and Freedom, told us that the way to preserve freedom is to centralize information and disperse power. This is the essence of participatory economics.

Power is dispersed among all citizens, even to the extent that all have equally empowering job complexs (referring to the amount of authority and conceptual work). This way there is a double check against the libertarian fear of power players-- equal access to resources and equal empowerment.

And, the more novel feature of this system, information is centralized and avaliable to all. This is for the purpose of planning one's consumption bundle and work proposal. If, for example, I discover that there is a shortage of steel, I might postpone the purchase of a car, in order to get a better (artificially determined) price next year and also to relieve the strain on the workers in the industry.

But why would anyone care about the workers? This is one of the key contrasts between PE and capitalism. Hahnel and Albert argue that if people have the information and the power to help and consider others, then it will be done. In capitalism, we need know nothing about the conditions under which most of what we consume is made. Under PE, we would. By removing the disincentives to human compassion, our social nature is allowed to flourish.

While Looking Forward gives a clear outline of PE, it is too ambiguous at points. Hahnel and ALbert seem to respond to difficulties with generalizations. They do, however, refer the reader to other works meant to fill the gaps-- The Political Economy of Participatory Economics, Liberating Theory, and The Quiet Revolution in Welfare Economics.

If you want to know what the modern anarchist ideal looks like, in which poverty is no longer "necessary" and human sociality is cultivated, read this book.

5 out of 5 stars any other ideas than capitalism?!.......1997-12-31

If you want to learn how an anarchist economy would work, and this even for the best of us all, then Alberts and Hahnels book is definitely for you. encouraging, pragmatic, plausible, convincing after all. It offers an interesting alternative model for a world where capitalism is the ruling fundamentalism of the elites. many people have lost their intellectual weapons against this. here is a possible refill.

A smart and savvy look at the way unions can help in managing our lives. Dr. Clark adds a touch of class to the usual ho-hum union research books. This one is a keeper and one that every student in labor studies and industrial relations should keep on their bedside for moments of clarity in which unionization becomes the clear answer in their lives.

                      Book Description

Details how Osama bin Laden and other al Qaeda fighters slipped out of Afghanistan during the battles of Tora Bora and Operation Anaconda. The author also charges that Western media outlets, eager to satisfy their audience’s thirst for revenge, lost their grasp on journalistic objectivity while covering bin Laden’s pursuit. Blinding patriotism and reliance on Pentagon press releases led them to portray events not reflecting reality on the ground. He contends that to satisfy the press and the public’s need for vengeance, the Bush administration pushed to achieve early, highly visible successes to the detriment of long-term strategy. Impatience at the top forced a rush into a war aimed primarily at “regime change,” which left the U.S. military largely empty-handed.

5 out of 5 stars Philip Smucker's Gripping Story: Journalism students ought to read this.......2006-01-06

Philip Smucker's account of the Battle at Tora Bora is the culmination of much journalistic and personal bravery. Surprisingly, what happened at the battle itself (when Osama Bin Laden is said to have escaped, navigating through the mountains) is not the most intriguing part of Smucker's story. Rather, it is Smucker's commitment to seeking out the heart of the story, and delivering it in a thought-provoking, purposeful manner. All around, a very good read.

4 out of 5 stars Why OBL got away.......2005-12-06

This is a journalist account of the eastern quadrant of Afghanistan during the intial operations of the invasion. Included are detailed discussions of Tora Bora and Shah-i-knot (AKA Anaconda). A couple things emerge from this account:

                      1) Pakistan did nothing to help the US anti-insurgent operations, and it was probably stupid to rely on them to seal their border. This permitted insurgents easy escape routes (an underground railroad) whenever operations soured, and created conditions for a revival of the insurgency (which we're facing now).

                      2) The chief of special forces and the top military officer on the ground in Afghanistan did not consider capturing OBL to be a top priority. His orders were to overthrow the Taliban and weaken support elements like Al Queda. Getting OBL was a secondary consideration.

                      3) Tactical operations had small troop formations. Anaconda was the biggest operation and used about 500 American troops, plus 700 Afghans who disappeared after being strafed in a friendly fire incident. Al Queda had about 1,000 men on the mountain. That our forces were not decimated is a testament to their skill and courage.

                      4) Al Queda was pervasive around Jalalabad, the author never seems to have trouble finding AQ members or sympathizers with whom to start trouble. AQ seemed to move in small units- 2 - 5 men, and could have been controlled by a strong military presence. It's hardly suprising that guerillas move in small units, but why was there no strategy for containment? The US had no option because of their small force (they had maybe two dozen men on the ground at Tora Bora, our best shot at getting OBL). The fact that the US had no such presence backs up Scheuer and his contentions about the overall competence of command.

                      5) The CIA seems a bit goofy. In an anecdote Smucker talks about how his guide was courted by the CIA to work undercover. The CIA backed off when they realized he worked with a journalist- a fact no one seemed to try to conceal. So the CIA basically made him an offer without doing even a preliminary check on what he was currently doing. The journalists were a huge boon to the economy of that region so basically everyone there was working for the media, a warlord, Al Queda, or some combination of the three. You'd think the CIA might want to know whose side their informer was on?

                      6) The Tora Bora operations were wasted from the beginning because Tommy Franks and Dick Cheney announced the operations in advance on public TV. Kind of hard to surprise anyone doing that...

Quick read to get nitty gritty on operations most people have already forgotten, but which were in retrospect our best chance to capture Bin Laden.

2 out of 5 stars Decent but sloppy and in dire need of a better editor.......2005-09-18

I have to admit being somewhat disappointed by "Al Qaeda's Great Escape." The fundamentals of the book are sound, as Philip Smucker and his translator Lutfullah Mashal trail Afghan tribal leaders and American soldiers through the mountains of Afghanistan, roundly condemning the American aversion to committing ground troops to the conflict and giving a jaundiced view of the members of the media covering the events, including himself.

Unfortunately, the book suffers from numerous obvious mistakes, which have persisted into the paperback edition. Some of these are gramatical or spelling mistakes (one does not "caste" suspicion or blame, as the book does on two separate occasions) and some may simply be typos (the NBC correspondent Mike Taibbi is referred to as "Mike Tiabbi" and there is no F-17 aircraft in the U.S. Air Force arsenal). However, there is at least one factual error as Smucker gets Air Force Pararescue Jumper (PJ) Jason Cunningham's name wrong, referring to him as "P.J. Cunningham" instead. The fact that SrA Cunningham was killed in action during Operation Anaconda makes this error even more upsetting. I can understand how the mistake was made, but that doesn't make it any less sloppy.

By themselves, none of these errors are serious, but there are quite a few of them, and all of them are the sort that should have been caught by a fact check or a decent editor. That so many foolish mistakes made their way into the final draft of the text forces one to wonder what other, less obvious errors slipped through. To me, these errors nearly call the credibility of the entire book into question, even if I happen to agree with many of Smucker's conclusions.

However, the book is quite a page turner and seems to get things right at least on the broad-strokes level. It's not a bad book, but I would be very wary of using it as a single source of information.

                      5 out of 5 stars Evil-doer Redux.......2005-04-03

This book conjures up a litany of incompetencies. In the immediate aftermath of the attacks on the WTC and the Pentagon, our commander-in-chief vowed to take down the chief perpetrator "dead or alive." Despite the mild rebuke he received at the time from his wife, the President stuck with his determined sounding language. The fiasco that unfolds for us to see in "Al Qaeda's Great Escape," exposes both hubris and hypocrisy. After vowing to get bin Laden, the White House did not bother to coordinate a military plan that would have concentrated our forces -- conventional and special forces -- on the senior AQ leadership that masterminded 9/11. Mr. Smucker provides convincing evidence that AQ was goading for a major ground confrontation with US troops in Afghanistan. When, instead, we unleashed a massive aeriel campaign, the AQ leadership decided to pack it in, slip over the border into Pakistan and hope to fight another day. Ironically, the expanded Islamist insurgency -- with bin Laden still at the helm -- has found what it was after in the Iraqi theater. The argument put forth by Pentagon officials -- Rumsfeld in particular -- that a major infusion of US forces into Afghanistan risked alienating the Afghan population no longer washes. Afterall, we've now become bogged down in a country that had no dog in that attack. And since several thousand US infantry made it to the 2-mile high battle of Anaconda a few months after Tora Bora, the Pentagon/White House warning of a "logistical nightmare" that would ensue if we sent in thousands to surround the old Soviet redoubt doesn't fly either. The American public is still paying for strategic mistakes at Tora Bora to this day. Beyond that, the Admin's contention that bin Laden might not have ever been there is rendered moot with the testimony of the Green Beret commander, Col.Mulholland, within the text of this book, not to mention the massive amount of circumstantial evidence provided by eyewitness testimony of AQ and Afghans. I noticed that the other day, Pentagon lawyers actually used as "summary evidence" to hold one Gitmo prisoner his complicity in helping bin Laden escape Tora Bora. So apparently the Pentagon is now convinced enough that he was there -- despite vehemently denying it for over 3 years -- to use it as proof to detain the enemy. Given all we've learned -- and with the help of this fascinating and gritty account -- one wonders how the incompetents managed to escape a broader rebuke from the US public for their gross errors of judgement. No wonder that when pressed to express his regrets of his first term, Mr. Bush now lists the statement "dead or alive" as something he might not have said given a second chance.

A wonderful rendition of the battle at Tora Bora and our mistakes that allowed Osama bin Laden to escape, from someone who was actually there. A great story teller who weaves the personalities of the terrorists, warlords, correspondents and goverment officials into a book that is almost impossible to put down. A great read!

The author of the acclaimed Gods, Graves, and Scholars tells the dramatic tale of the Hittites, an Indo-European people who became a dominant power in the Middle East. Their struggle in Egypt with Ramses II for control of Syria led to one of the greatest battles of the ancient world. The fall of the Hittite empire was sudden, and historical records were scarce--until the discovery of cuneiform tablets yielded a rich store of information on which this work is based. "...a saga richly charged with dramatic twists and with enthralling accounts of scholarly detective work."--The Atlantic.

C.W. Ceram's book is dated in places, but still an excellent account of the archeology which unearthed the ancient Hittites - one of the great empires of the near east - and allowed them to speak to us today. This is a story mainly about archeology and those who brought the Hittites alive once more. This book should be understood as such - a blend of history of both Hittites and the scholars who struggled to find them again. Those who wish to read solely about the Hittites can still glean much good information from this book, but as an addition to other works.

4 out of 5 stars The Discovery of an Ancient Empire.......2000-06-27

Rivaling Egypt and Babylon at the zenith of its' power, the Hittite Empire was so completely destroyed that only the tiniest pieces of a large mosaic remained, erasing their centuries-long sway over Asia Monor from the memory of man. Ceram's book looks at both the Hittite Empire and its' discovery in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Both tales are equally compelling. Among the first Indo-Europeans to appear in history, they established themselves as a warrior aristocracy in Anatolia ca. the 19th century, B.C. Ruling a polygot collection of ancient kingdoms, they 'went native' as regards religion and culture to a great extent. Their decentralized system resembled a confederacy, and their early government featured a limited monarchy, ruling jointly with a proto-Senate (the Pankus). Ceram is at his best in tracing the unravelling the silence that shrouded them from the time of the Fall of Troy until the 19th century. He shows how the accidental discovery of their capital, Hattusa, by explorers led to debates as to who built it. Next, the cuneiform libraries of their kings yielded another suprise: They spoke an Indo-European language. The work of Friederich Hornzy, an Austrian who deciphered the language as his likf's work, is a compelling vingette. The identification of this ancient empire with the Hittites mentioned in the Bible sparked intense controversy, but proved to be true. Proponents took one reference, from II Kings 7:6, in which the kings of the Hittites come before the kings of the Egyptians in precedence, to infer their existence as a great power. Ceram leaves us with other tantilizing questions, such as: was the Attasyrias who raided the western shores of Asia Minor the Atreus whose sons, Agmamenon and Melemeus, sacked Troy? A highly readable, yet rather scholarly account of one of archaelolgy's greatest triumphs, written almost in the style of a mystery novel. -Lloyd A. Conway

                        4 out of 5 stars A well-woven tale of Archaeology.......2000-04-15

In terms of revealing information on the Hittites themselves, I was not impressed by the author's presentation of historical fact. However, this book does reveal an astounding image of what it took to begin to uncover the mystery shrouding this long sought after Biblical people.

If you enjoy the history being made as much as the history being uncovered, I would highly recommend this book.

                                    Book Description

Birding is the fastest-growing outdoor pursuit in America. This landmark volume, Oklahoma's first breeding bird atlas, offers both amateurs and ornithologists a wealth of information about Oklahoma bird species and their distributions. Lavishly illustrated with over 200 color photographs and 200 color maps, the Oklahoma Breeding Bird Atlas is as attractive as it is informative.

During the years 1997-2001, more than 100 volunteer birders and professional researchers surveyed nearly 600 locations across all regions of Oklahoma. Their careful records form the basis of the maps in this volume, which show at a glance the breeding distribution of bird species both common and rare in Oklahoma. Detailed species accounts, illustrated with stunning photographs as well as maps, provide information on plumage, habitat, nesting habits, eggs, and the young.

An invaluable reference for birders, ornithologists, and natural resource specialists, the atlas will be useful both today and in the future for understanding changes in bird population over time.

The Oklahoma Breeding Bird Atlas is the result of a cooperative effort between the Oklahoma Biological Survey and the Sutton Avian Research Center.
