5 out of 5 stars A classic that is unfortunately out of print..........2006-04-07

This beautiful book full of striking photographs takes you everywhere from a nobleman's Alpine retreat to a humble Slovak village home. The creative building styles, combined with the trappings of everyday life along the Danube - make for a very engrossing read. It's like a National Geographic story, only in book length. Unfortunately this excellent book is out of print, but hopefully it will not remain so.

Book Description

In this lyrical collection of more than 130 works, each artist expresses a particular mood through his or her art. Happiness, anger, sorrow, triumph, despair, joy-all are here, presenting the wonderful range of human emotions in a showcase of paintings from some of today's finest talent.

What does it mean to create expressive watercolors?"To imbue a thought, a word, a sign, or symbol with emotion-to use values and color, playing them off each other as a musician plays different chords of music, choosing them as carefully as poets choose their words. As we sit before our subject, we forget all else; we are one with our subject. All we have are colors, lines, and values. We add mediums, shapes, and forms in pictorial space to make a composition. We have color choices to make-how light, how dark, which ones to place next to each other. We're so careful about how they touch, the wonderful edges they make. We are in a different world, the world of painting-and all of us have our own world, and this is how we put it down…" --from the introduction by Betty Lou Schlemm, AWS-DF

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful collection, lots of varitey,inspirational.......2001-06-12

This is a beautiful collection of watercolor paintings featuring a wide range of different subjects including nature, animals, people, landscapes and still lives. It will offer inspiration for years to come.

Each picture lists the artist, tile, size and paper used. A brief comment by the artist is also included. All images are placed one to a page. Contact information for each artist is included in the back.

Some of my favorite paintings include a colorful, energetic landscape titled the Blue Shadow Side by Harold Gregor and a portrait of four little girls of various ethnic backgrounds by Judithe Randall. I liked the whimsical mushroom piece called Magical Forest VIII by Jerry Little and the nostalgic tricycle by D. Denghausen. I also enjoyed a polar bear by Colleen Newport Stevens called Midnight on the Ice, done mostly with a wet-in-wet technique.

This book is a great addition to any watercolor artists or enthusiast's library. It also makes a great gift.

Being a workaholic doesn't just mean being a hard worker, says Robinson, a psychotherapist and professor at the University of North Carolina who has been studying people's work habits for years. It means you've got a progressively worsening addiction like any other, in which work becomes the substance you use in an attempt to meet your unconscious psychological needs. Robinson calls workaholism the "best-dressed addiction," because it's often rewarded--at least in the short term--and is seen as a positive attribute by people who don't understand the destruction it can cause. Chained to the Desk provides worksheets to help you recognize whether you or someone close to you is a work addict, case studies that demonstrate workaholic ways of thinking, and treatment methods that involve the entire family. It sheds considerable light on a topic that mental-health professionals often don't recognize--in part because, as Robinson points out, many of them are workaholics themselves. --Ben Kallen, Personal Growth editor

              Book Description

              As Seen on ABC's 20/20

Americans love a hard worker. The man or woman who works 18 hour days and eats his or her meals on the run between appointments is usually viewed with a combination of respect and awe. But for many, this lifestyle leads to family problems, a decline in work productivity, and ultimately to physical and mental collapse.

In Chained to the Desk, best-selling author and widely-respected family therapist Dr. Bryan Robinson has written a groundbreaking book--the first comprehensive portrait of the workaholic. Intended for anyone touched by what Robinson calls "the best-dressed problem of the twentieth century," this innovative volume profiles the myths behind this greatly-misunderstood disorder and the inner psychological battle that work addicts wage against themselves. The book also serves as an inside look into the impact on those who live and work with them--partners, spouses, children, and colleagues--as well as the appropriate techniques for clinicians who treat them.

Portraying the many different kinds of workaholism, Robinson draws on hundreds of case reports from his own original research and years of clinical practice. From California to the Carolinas, men and women tell of their agonizing bouts with workaholism and the devastations left in its wake. Adult children of workaholics describe their childhood pain and the life-long legacies they still carry. The spouses or partners of workaholics reveal the isolation and loneliness of their vacant relationships and the terror of questioning their own sanity. Employers and business colleagues discuss the cost to the company when workaholism dominates the workplace.

Chained to the Desk both counsels and consoles. It provides a step-by-step guide to help readers spot workaholism, understand it, and recover. Robinson presents strategies for workaholics and their loved ones on how to cope, and for people in the workplace on how to distinguish between work efficiency and workaholism.

              Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Do not underestimate the value and necessity of reading this book.......2007-10-07

Depending on the clinician to whom one talks, between 50 and 85% of Western populations are workaholic, so "Chained to the Desk" should appeal to virtually every English-speaking Westerner. Few of us will, however, read it. This is a great tragedy because, if you suffer from an addiction to work, not only do you probably suffer from many other less "socially admirable" addictions that will undoubtedly be shortening your life and making it less enjoyable than necessary, you are probably also unwittingly spreading this very debilitating and serious disease and, moreover, will unwittingly be creating varying degrees of "hell" for your intimates. I know. I lost my family before I woke up to the family-and-life-threatening concomitants of this disease.

"Chained to the Desk" is extremely comprehensive, well-referenced, well organized, cogently argued, and replete with practical suggestions. Yet it suffers from a major flaw: it describes workaholics as "them" and leaves those of us who do not like to be described as "them" just as much "in the unknowing cold" as before. Nevertheless, if you can identify with Dr. Robinson's "them" without "turning off or away", studying this book will help you either escape or heal from workaholism. As for Dr. Robinson, well, since he was once himself severely addicted to work, he has another book to write for us in which I recommend his publisher insists that he substitute the words "we" and "us" for "they" and "them". Maybe then the Anglosphere will wake up to our gross, grievous, and ongoing failures to use technologies and techniques for the true and lasting benefit of both ourselves and our planet.

5 out of 5 stars Eye Opener about Workaholism.......2007-09-22

"Chained to the Desk" is an excellent book for both the layperson and the clinician on workaholism. It provides an informative and clearly articulated discussion of the symptoms of workaholism, the possible causes, and how to fight it. The book's discussion of the addiction's impact on spouses and partners, children, friends, and work colleagues is particularly instructive. The author also provides a simple test for determining to what degree, if any, the reader suffers from workaholism. I highly recommend this book for the individual who is prone to taking her blackberry on vacation or is otherwise "chained to her desk" and for the those close to her who must suffer the consequences.

5 out of 5 stars Chained to the Desk Review.......2007-03-29

The moment I got this book I could not put it down. It offered helpful information for a wife of a workaholic. It connected words with the feelings that have been felt, the frustrations and disappoints. It is a must read for anyone who is a workaholic, and who lives with one.

              5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book.......2007-01-25

This is an awesome book that describes the seriousness of the addiction. The biggest obstacle will be getting the workaholic to actually read it.

5 out of 5 stars A book that can change your life!.......2006-08-07

Begrudgingly I began to read this book at my wife's request, not expecting much - what a surprise I was in for. Chapter after chapter led to new revelations about my own work addition and how it impacts others. What the author presents is a way to overcome a sick work ethic and replace it with a new attitude that allows you to make your life rich and rewarding. Whether you are work-motivated by money or personal interests, this book is highly recommended for anyone who can't leave work in the office or believes that work is the most important part of their life.

"It's hard to imagine Derek Jeter or Tiger Woods heading to Iraq to join the U.S. Armed Forces. But in World War II no American man between the ages of 20 and 45 was too big to serve-except for the basketball players who exceeded the Army's 6'6" limits for recruits, a situation illustrated in this excellent book. Part log, part pictorial, and total history lesson, this book could be sent to school with your kids and used for social studies class. Riveting and moving." -Sports Illustrated

Painstakingly researched and profusely illustrated, DUTY, HONOR, VICTORY tells the stories of the well-known athletes whose onfield exploits brought another type of fame, but whose battlefield duty has long been overlooked. Here is football's Chuck Bednarik flying bombing missions over Germany, baseball's Bob Feller commanding an anti-aircraft gun crew aboard the USS Alabama; Warren Spahn wounded and nearly killed when the bridge at Remagen collapses, or Yogi Berra on a rocket boat in Normandy. Here are boxer Gene Tunney, ballplayer Bert Shepard. Winter Olympic athletes in the famed Tenth Mountain Division, black athletes in the Tuskegee Airmen.

DUTY, HONOR, VICTORY covers all sports, from tennis, golf, and baseball to football, and basketball. The well-known professionals, the lesser-known college athletes, and those who toiled in obscurity-they all performed their duty extraordinarily.

DUTY, HONOR, VICTORY covers World War II from the origins of Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan in the 1930s through their defeats in 1945-and extends into 1946 and the integration of major league baseball. DUTY, HONOR, VICTORY covers a wide range of athletes, whose love of competition served them well in battle: Dizzy Dean, Larry Doby, Enos Slaughter, Monte Irvin, Pee Wee Reese, Art Donovan, Pete Gray, Jackie Robinson, Gil Hodges, Hoyt Wilhelm, Emlen Tunnell, and scores of others.

              Customer Reviews:

              3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2006-12-28

This book wasn't at all what I thought it would be. I expected it to primarily address those "prominent" athletes who achieved some measure of distinction on the battlefields of World War II and to be more about those athletes and less about the war. Instead, I found the book to be basically a history of World War II which walked us through the battles in chronological order while interspersing the names of many "athletes" who participated in the various actions.

I put the word "athletes" in quotations because I had a little difficulty with what seemed to me to be the author's loose definition of an athlete. I realize that many career military officers played sports while at the military academies, but I somehow have difficulty in considering career military personnel to be "athletes." When I think of Generals George S. Patton, Omar Bradley or Dwight D. Eisenhower, for example, I don't think of them as athletes. I think of them as soldiers. The author also extended his definition of an athlete to include anyone who played sports in high school, college, or the pros, and to include a multitude of sports. This introduced a host of lesser names throughout the book, which served only as a distraction from the main theme, which seemed to be World War II.

To say that this book was extremely well researched would be a major under-statement. I was amazed. But still, I couldn't figure out why the author had written the book, or to whom it was addressed. To me, it is an extremely interesting and informative book when taken as a history of World War II. But I think it would have been a much better book if it hadn't distracted the reader by inserting the names of so many unknown "athletes," particularly just because they were there.

The belt of islands leading from Australia northeastward to Hawaii offers any number of choice birders' destinations: some 20 families (cassowaries, logrunners, and honeycreepers, for instance) are endemic, while another hundred or so are common, including most of the world's birds of paradise species and an astonishing variety of sunbirds, flycatchers, and nightjars. Wheatley, an accomplished birder and writer, offers a guide to some 200 destinations, with notes on endemic and characteristic populations, other regional wildlife, and lodging and other services. --Gregory McNamee

                Book Description

Where to Watch Birds in Australasia and Oceania is the fourth guide in a series that will ultimately cover the whole world. It describes over two hundred major sites in detail and many more in passing, from New Guinea to New Zealand and across the Pacific to Hawaii. Most important, it answers crucial questions you find yourself asking before you go: Where can I see birds that epitomize the region? Which country supports the best cross section of species and the most endemics, and which sites do I need to visit to see most of them? How long do I need, and when is the best time to go?

The layout of the book is practical, with countries, archipelagos, and islands treated alphabetically. General introductions to each country are followed by site details, which include bird lists under the headings "Endemics," "Specialties," and "Others"; a list of other wildlife if applicable; and the latest information on where to look for the best birds. Over one hundred maps and fifty line drawings complement the text. This guide will prove invaluable in both the preparation and execution of birding trips to any country, archipelago, or island in this highly varied region of the world.

As usual with the series, this book does a very good job at introducing the "essential" birdwatching sites of a huge region.
Much of it is, for better or worse, devoted to describing the two biggest and most visited countries, Australia and New Zealand. Coverage of these is good, but since there are also single country guides to them you could also use those.
Where this book really becomes invaluable is its coverage of the often little-known archipelagos of Oceania: Melanesia, Polynesia and Micronesia. Few of these countries are often visited by birders, yet even the remotest ones, like Pitcairn, are described. Since other guides to nature reserves of these island nations are basically non-existant, descriptions and maps of remote islands and forested regions are of interest to anyone with an interest in the fauna of the Pacific.
But of course, twitchers are well served too - with lists of endemics, key sites to see each one, suggested itineraries and the like.
A worthy investment for your trip!
