Book Description
Munich, notorious in recent history as the capital of the Nazi movement, is the site of Gavriel Rosenfeld's stimulating inquiry into the German collective memory of the Third Reich. Rosenfeld shows, with the aid of a wealth of photographs, how the city's urban form developed after 1945 in direct reflection of its inhabitants' evolving memory of the Second World War and the Nazi dictatorship.
In the second half of the twentieth century, the German people's struggle to come to terms with the legacy of Nazism has dramatically shaped nearly all dimensions of their political, social, and cultural life. The area of urban development and the built environment, little explored until now, offers visible evidence of the struggle. By examining the ways in which the people of Munich reconstructed the ruins of their historic buildings, created new works of architecture, dealt with surviving Nazi buildings, and erected new monuments to commemorate the horrors of the recent past, Rosenfeld identifies a spectrum of competing memories of the Nazi experience.
Munich's postwar development was the subject of constant controversy, pitting representatives of contending aesthetic and mnemonic positions against one another in the heated battle to shape the city's urban form. Examining the debates between traditionalists, modernists, postmodernists, and critical preservationists, Rosenfeld shows that the memory of Nazism in Munich has never been "repressed" but has rather been defined by constant dissension and evolution. On balance, however, he concludes that Munich came to embody in its urban form a conservative view of the past that was inclined to diminish local responsibility for the Third Reich.

From the Publisher.......2005-11-13
"As a young man, Maurits Cornelis Escher (Dutch, 1898-1972) briefly studied to be an architect. When he abandoned architecture in favor of graphic art, it was certainly a good thing for the art world; and given his penchant for designing buildings in which stairs ascend to the bottom and walls behave like Mobius strips, it may have been a relief to the world of architecture as well.
"Escher used the earthly media of wood (for engravings), stone (for lithography), watercolor, pencil, and ink to set free his playful, awesomely imaginative creations. This book of postcards features thirty of his finest works.
"Pomegranate's books of postcards contain thirty top-quality reproductions bound together in a handy, artful collection. Easy to remove and produced on heavy card stock, these stunning postcards are a delight to the sender and receiver. Note: postcards are oversized and may require additional postage. ISBN: 0-7649-1757-9; size: 4 3/4 x 6 7/8"."--© Pomegranate

Book Description
The theater of sensual dreams
The Czech Republic has long been a land of mystery and magic, home to alchemists, artists, and the original bohemians, all of them weavers of spells, creators of fantastic worlds of the imagination. Internationally famous Czech photographer Jan Saudek is no exception, and equally as uncompromising in pursuit of his own unique vision. For over four decades Saudek has created a parallel photographic universe, a two-dimensional home full of longing, peopled with the most extraordinary characters and colored by desire. The timeless strength of his hand-tinted photographs lies in their poetic compositions and their forcefulat times ribaldpictorial language, with its overtones of medieval genre pictures and Baroque mythology. Rejecting the traditional beauty in his famous nude photographs, Saudek shows the distinctively different: old women, fat women, children; real people in tableaux vivants that remind us of everything from surreal early movies to fin-de-siecle carnival nights. They exist outside time, a uniquely colored and almost mythical theater of dreams. Covering his debut in the 1950s through his lesser-known work to recent images, this dazzling collection offers us the true "velvet revolution," fertile and unsettling images from the dreams we might still have.

wow! what a bargain! don't this this one!.......2007-06-06
this is an amazing collection of photographs by saudek who i accidently discovered on the internet one day. there really is no one else like him...way more poetic and ultimately way more creatively satisifying than joel-peter witkin...just beautiful stuff. and this is a huge book for a very good price...buy it now before you have to pay 10 times this much on ebay for a copy.
art and image.......2007-06-04
The photo book of Jean Saudek, with the selection and conception of Daniela Mrásková, edited by Taschen, is of a unique beauty. It shows the trajectory of this original, creative and audacious photographer that make art out of his work, providing unique emotions to our eyes and yet many times unquiet, as poems of singular strength, taking us to extremely human toughs. Fully illustrated, with a remarkable graphic and print quality, this is a indispensable book for the lovers of art and photography.

Cheaper by the pound.......2007-02-05
This is a very heavy book, printed on heavy stock. For Saudek fans, this book is a must. The book has background information, and then is divided into thematic sections. Unlike previous books, the pages have the entire photograph on them. And by that, I mean the borders. When one buys a Saudek print, it poses problems for the framer, as Saudek has a lot written on the margins of the photograph, which you want to display. The pictures in this book show the notations. And since the final print is hand colored,it is interesting to see when the print was taken and when it was finished. That sometimes is years apart. And a quirk of Saudek is that he puts the finished date 100 years earlier than the actual date.
There are a lot of classic prints that have appeared before, but there also are a lot of new prints. This book is a very worthwhile addition to one's Saudek collection.
It's Not What You See, It's What You See..........2004-01-29
I ran across this publication in a used book barn and thumbed through it. What I saw made me wonder what kind of a violent lunatic Jan Saudek is, and what kind of a sadistic perverted mind would create such photos? But something about the book peeked my interest. I reminded myself that I am an artist, so I at least owed it to the photographer to objectively evaluate his work, so I did...two more times, from cover to cover, and quite thoroughly. What I discovered was a myriad of hidden and intwerwoven themes, many which had almost no relation at all to the photos themselves, and which all tied into one central theme. Whether this is a collection of political, moral, ethical, and social issues can only be known for sure by Jan Saudek, but all these things can be deduced if you put forth the effort and see with an artist's eye. Perhaps my favorite two photos in the entire book is one where a nude woman is sitting upright with her legs folded behind her head as she peers through a set of binoculars, and a photo of an overweight woman standing naked with large dark freckles and rosy cheeks painted on her face. They are humorous but quite thought provoking if you get past the initial images and attempt to interpret what the artist is saying. I can almost assure you that nudity or eroticism are not the issues at all. Another set of photos shows Jan lighting a cigarette. His head is shaved. In the opposing photo a woman has a pistol in her mouth. Both are killing themselves, but in different ways. It really appears to go much deeper than that, but I do not have time to explain all that I and a friend interpret from those photos. Two others that hit a sore spot, however, are: one where Jan is walking off into a rainbow with a stick slung across his shoulder and a small rag full of his bare necessities suspended from the pole. Someone who appears to be his wife is inside a barren house. She appears to be crying as she peers through a window and watches him departing. The other photo is of Jan kissing a woman as they both lie in a field, while in the distance another woman is hanging by her neck from a tree branch. These two photos spoke clear messages to me...the man leaves his true love for happier days and greener pastures, not understanding that his quest for selfish satisfaction is killing the one who truly loves him and with whom he has the most promise of happiness. These, of course, are only my own interpretations. I HIGHLY recommend you take your time viewing this book, and avoid being overly judgemental of it at first. It is truly not what it seems, and is certainly one of the best marriages of art and photography on the market.
If you want to creat a stir..........2000-12-08
Put this beautiful book of Saudek's hand-colored photographs on your coffee table and wait for an unsuspecting guest to pick it up! That is exactly how I was introduced to the equisite artistry of Jan Saudek. Rarely seen outside of Europe, Saudek's imaginative and erotic photos are at once sensual and disturbing in composition.

Customer Reviews:
KCF will always be cookin'.......2006-12-20
KFC has a great history and its development is a wonderful addition to any study of the fast food industry. I recommend this book in conjunction with Behind the Arches. For those who love the Colonel and want to learn more about the man, the myth, and the legend they can get it all here. The growth of the company and strategy for deployment are all clearly explained. IT is very well written and I enjoyed the anecdotes along the way.
Colonel Sanders and the KFC Empire.......2006-06-23
Secret Recipe is a book that offers a good, historical breakdown of the Kentucky Fried Chicken company and the individuals who built the restaurant into the thriving business that it remains today. Darden tries to cover all the important bases, from the original restaurant that opened in Corbin, Kentucky, all the way to the present day business, owned and operating by Tricon, Inc.
I really enjoyed all the facts that this book contains. Until I read this book, I did not know that it was Pete Harman who thought of the name, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and I didn't know that Harman dreamed up the idea of selling buckets of chicken. Like most people, I assumed that the Colonel himself deserved credit for these business discoveries. After reading about the naming of the restaurant, I sure am glad that Harman had the necessary business sense to reject the restaurant name "Utah Chicken". It just doesn't sound right. It makes about as much sense as the "Utah Jazz". This is just oen of many facts discussed in this book.
Throughout the pages of this book, the author includes important quotes that are highlighted in a gray box, set aside from the regular text. There are also a few lists of facts here and there such as "Early Franchise Holders" and "The Colonel's Appearances on Television". You can also find text boxes on many pages titled "Pete's Words of Wisdom", which include quotes from Harman on successful restaurant operation.
One other important note to make about this book is that it was written as a historical summary of the KFC business as a whole. It isn't a biographical sketch of Colonel Sanders. Author Robert Darden does make frequent mention of the Colonel, as he should. But there's just as much coverage given to Pete Harman and other people who were instrumental to the success of this business.
Colonel Sanders has been gone now for more than two decades. Much of his original vision of what a restaurant should be has changed over the years. Even the name of the restaurant has changed from Kentucky Fried Chicken to the abbreviated KFC. But one thing that hasn't gone by the wayside is the image of Colonel Sanders. His familiar, smiling face remains a part of the KFC restaurant chain and is displayed on KFC merchandise and around each KFC store unit. It's a tribute to the man and the legend known as Colonel Harland Sanders. His finger lickin' good original recipe of herbs and spices has satisfied chicken lovers all over the world for more than half a century. And this book is equally satisfying, full of trivia and historical accounts of the KFC company and its rise to the top of its restaurant class.
KFC in SLC.......2002-03-06
This book provides great insight into the real story behind KFC. Especially entertaining for those that are familiar with KFC, the organization, the franchises, and the restaurant business. Goes into the philosophies of Pete Harman, the first, biggest and most influencial franchisee. Talks alot about the company, the growth, the growing pains, and what made the company successful.

Book Description
Framing a Domain provides fascinating insights into why women choose to sell real estate and why they have come to dominate the profession. Based on in-depth interviews with women realtors, carried out through the 1990s, Carol Wharton's work places this white-collar service occupation within the larger context of women's lives. It offers a unique case study of the gendered practices that infuse the workplace, and the ways women negotiate these practices to successfully weave work with family obligations.

Drama in the sky.......2001-01-01
This story is very involving and very dramatic, I enjoyed the bravery of the main character, fighting in disadventage with the nature and trying to make the impossible come true. It's a very emotional story from the beginnings of the aviation and the dangers of a night flight in these early years of the plane

Book Description
For more than a century, people have been emigrating from countries of the Mediterranean basin - Spain, Italy, Sicily, Greece and parts of the Near East - to the New World of America and Australasia. This emigration has formed an important part of the international movement of population which is one of the features of the modern world. This book is concerned with one specific movement, that of emigrants from Lebanon who have established communities in North and South America, the Caribbean, Australia and West Africa, and more recently in the Gulf and other parts of the Middle East. The book is a collection of essays based on papers delivered at a conference on Lebanese Emigration organised by the Centre for Lebanese Studies in Oxford. The chapters are written by historians, economists, sociologists and political scientists, coming from various backgrounds and disciplines. The attempt to evaluate the impact of the emigrants from Lebanon on the host societies, the process of integration, their economic, political and cultural significance, as well as their relations with the home country and their contribution to its development. The book also touches on the more recent emigration during the recent war in Lebanon one of the pressing problems facing the country at present. Issues discussed include the effects of the war on the established immigrant communities. This is perhaps the first comprehensive attempt to make a comparative study of the life of an immigrant community of common origin in different continents and cultures.
Customer Reviews:
Review of book "The Lebanese in the World".......2002-08-17
This book consists of a comprehensive collection of scholerly studies of the Lebanese diaspora over time. It includes socialogical, political, and personal studies of a dirverse group of people and the differant coping skills and strategies that come into play (likely) for any people. In so far as that is the case the book should have broad appeal to any people interested in studies of diaspora. The studies are particularly good because there are comprehensive records for that group and it is fairly recent in history and ongoing. Further, the Lebanese have settled in every continent and under such a vast set of circumstances that this study is of great value from a comparative point of view. In a time when population genetics has become a growing field and with it questions of cultural diffusion are more pressing this study can add insight into such issues that arise in that field of study. Besides the scholerly importance of this book many of papers are of a compelling human interest. It is not just a study of one people, but owing to the great cultural, religious and ethnic diversity of the Lebanese and the wide and varied circumstanve of their migrations this book must touch the hearts of all peoples. Their entry into many countries that were only seeking agricultural laborors and for which their material success provoked laws to ban them and later following their success in many countries by use of the label "asiatic" to prevent them from entry at some point into much of North and South America, and at some point even the United States these facts are things that many of us must be familier, Jews, Chinese, Japanese, Italians, Blacks and so on. The spirit to persevere comes over also as a triumphant one and for that reason this book is of value to us all. I recommend it to all and at the very least to schools and libraries. I bought the book for about ... but presently the book does not appear available anymore or at a used price much
higher then the original price. I hope that the publishers will remedy this problem.
Fantastic for Dinner parties.......2001-04-06
