        Book Description

By 1970, Leon Levinstein’s photography had been included in several important exhibitions, from Photography Then and Now at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1952 to Harlem on My Mind at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York in 1967, but widespread recognition for the artist did not follow. Now, only after his death, Levinstein’s work is finally beginning to receive the attention it deserves.

Leon Levinstein is the catalog for a major exhibition of his photography opening at the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa on February 10, 1995 and at the Museum of Modern Art, New York on July 20, 1995. Featured in this handsome book are 66 photographs taken on the streets of New York’s Lower East Side, Coney Island, Times Square, and Central Park and from Haiti, Mexico, and India. These images present in intimate detail the personal struggles and alienation of their subjects as well as Levinstein’s own untempered vision of life on the street.

Bob Shamis chronicles Levinstein’s career as a layout artist in advertising, his aesthetic development, and his relationships with his family, fellow photographer Lisette Model, mentors Sid Grossman of the Photo League and Alexey Brodovitch of the New School for Social Research and Harper’s Bazaar, and curators Edward Steichen of the Museum of Modern Art and Helen Gee of the Limelight Gallery. In a second essay, noted critic Max Kozloff discusses Levinstein’s place in the milieu of New York street photography. Kozloff writes that "Levenstein’s jolting approach and the raunchy world reported in these photographs . . . is very local, unmistakably New York."

          Book Description

Why do even the best companies struggle to become as profitable in international markets as they are at home? Because they've fallen for the "mirage" of a truly global market. In fact, the world is comprised of hundreds of intensely local markets that are becoming more fragmented with each passing year. In The Mirage of Global Markets, David Arnold reveals why multinationals are actually losing market share--and how the world is rapidly accelerating towards "segments of one." Next, he offers you a comprehensive new blueprint for maximizing profitability in a world of local markets. You will discover why international marketing has become radically different from conventional marketing, and you will learn how to cost-effectively localize all the decisions that matter most: decisions about market entry, product mix, distribution, promotion, communication, strategy and more. Simply put, The Mirage of Global Markets shows how to globally manage the intensely local marketing programs that are now utterly crucial to your success.

                  Product Description

The latest edition of this casebook on banking and financial services regulation takes a problem-oriented approach to the subject. With its focus on the interactions and crossovers within the financial services industry, it gives students and professors an opportunity to explore the issues that are defining regulation in this area. Malloy covers supervision and regulation of the full range of the depository institutions industry - commercial banks, savings associations, and credit unions - as well as the intersection of this industry with securities and insurance. The book contains over 300 detailed problems and notes that are accessible yet challenging. The problems and notes have beeb repeatedly tested and refined over the course of twenty years of intensive teaching at five different schools. Malloy has included an extensive bibliography keyed to the subject matter of each chapter. The book works extremely well as a casebook for a standard course in financial services regulation and as a basic reading and resource text for an advanced seminar.

                  Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Banking and Financial Services Law.......2004-05-25

The text takes a very categorical approach to the law of banking. The book is filled with good case law that shows how banking has emerged from the depression and how a heavily regulated enterprise can still be good.

However, instead of publishing a new book the author chose to supplement the text. The supplement does contain the relevant statutes, but that is not the problem. The supplement contains whole chapters that have been revised. Half way through the semester, we were told to leave the book at home because all relevant textbook information was in the supplement. This wouldn't be bad, but it should have been in the 2nd edition, not the supplement.
Additionally, the supplement is almost as expensive as the book, and both are worthless without each other. This is very deceiving and costly. I paid 90.00 for the book and 70 for the supplement...all for a two-hour course. Congratulations to Mr. Malloy and Carolina Academic Press for really thinking this one through!!!

This book shows how to successfully manage aggressive behavior exhibited by youth in open, nonsecure settings such as schools, foster homes, shelters, and camps. It discusses how to prevent milder forms of aggression from escalating into serious, violent behavior and how staff can build relationships with youth. This book will help you understand the roots of aggressive behavior and how you can reverse the pattern and help youth develop positive relationships with adults and peers. The book describes how to build on the special strengths and qualities of youth and to teach them alternative ways of behaving.

Topics include characteristics, correlates, and risk factors of aggressive youth, setting tolerance levels, pinpointing aggressive behavior, relationship-building and Effective Praise, teaching alternatives to aggressive behavior, the short-term solution of crisis intervention, and the long-term solution of problem-solving.

                          Book Description

In a study that will radically shift our understanding of Civil War literature, Elizabeth Young shows that American women writers have been profoundly influenced by the Civil War and that, in turn, their works have contributed powerfully to conceptions of the war and its aftermath. Offering fascinating reassessments of works by white writers such as Harriet Beecher Stowe, Louisa May Alcott, and Margaret Mitchell and African-American writers including Elizabeth Keckley, Frances Harper, and Margaret Walker, Young also highlights crucial but lesser-known texts such as the memoirs of women who masqueraded as soldiers. In each case she explores the interdependence of gender with issues of race, sexuality, region, and nation.

Combining literary analysis, cultural history, and feminist theory, Disarming the Nation argues that the Civil War functioned in women's writings to connect female bodies with the body politic. Women writers used the idea of "civil war" as a metaphor to represent struggles between and within women—including struggles against the cultural prescriptions of "civility." At the same time, these writers also reimagined the nation itself, foregrounding women in their visions of America at war and in peace. In a substantial afterword, Young shows how contemporary black and white women—including those who crossdress in Civil War reenactments—continue to reshape the meanings of the war in ways startlingly similar to their nineteenth-century counterparts.

Learned, witty, and accessible, Disarming the Nation provides fresh and compelling perspectives on the Civil War, women's writing, and the many unresolved "civil wars" within American culture today.

                                  Book Description

This is the first comprehensive guide to the closely related families of wrens, dippers, and thrashers. The book covers 75 wrens, 34 thrashers, and 5 dippers, almost all of which are New World species. The wrens (Troglodytidae) display great diversity, occupying almost every kind of habitat in the Americas. The family probably originates in Central America where the greatest number of species is to be found. The thrashers (Mimidae) include the mockingbirds, catbirds, and tremblers. The dippers (Cinclidae) are river specialists, although they usually exhibit no obvious features for an aquatic existence. The book describes the various forms within each group, their distribution and breeding biology, as well as their flight, moult, behavior, and ecology. The text is accompanied by maps, diagrams, and color illustrations.
