    Book Description

The profession of architecture is increasingly characterized by divergent architectural ideas and divergent political, social, technological, and economic agendas. Much of current practice focuses on the process of architecture (its how) rather than its meaning, effect, or reason for being (its why). This issue of Perspecta--the oldest and most distinguished student-edited architectural journal--explores the practice of architecture after the breakdown of consensus. Designers, theoreticians, and scholars investigate an architectural landscape devoid of a dominant ideology or ethos. Their essays take specific points of departure--globalization, urbanism, pedagogy, irony, as well as form, theory, and ideology--to address broader questions about the social, economic, and political fallout from these modes of practice, considering whether the lack of an overriding ethos in architecture is liberating or limiting for the profession. And, after all, is it conceivable, or desirable, to return to an architecture derived from a single, dominant mode of operation?

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-05-12

I have read Monster, Home of the Body Bags and My Bloody Life, which I feel were excellent books. I feel that this book was excellent also and very informative in depicting the gang lifestye.

5 out of 5 stars Had me on my feet!.......2007-05-02

They say that every book has a hidden message. This story hit it on the mark. The editing could have been better but the story was simply remarkable. King Macho fit the profile of many involved in the street life. A roller coaster ride for sure. Wonderful story and very informative of what state of mind some of the young kids of society are in. Looking for "LITTLE MACHOS REVENGE" can't find it!

        4 out of 5 stars great book....poor editing.......2007-03-04

This was such a heartfelt story. It really was on the money to what my kids tellme about their life and how they got where they are (I am a social worker). So sad that he died, but that is the life----Once you are in, you are in. I could not put this book down.

        1 out of 5 stars Unintelligible..........2007-01-12

Though I appreciate what the author was trying to achieve by writing this book, he seriously needed a copy editor. My students who are hardcore fans of the Reymundo Sanchez books were absolutely appalled by the poor grammar and spelling used in this book! As a matter of fact, many of them had a difficult time getting through the story because, as not-so-good readers, they could not get past the horrific way it was written. I just feel like a really good story got lost between misplaced commas and paragraphs that were never quite finished. I applaud the effort, but it just isn't good enough. :(

5 out of 5 stars BRANDON CORY FOR PRESIDENT!!!.......2006-08-12

ADC 360 STRONG. Brandon Cory went all out on this one. Fiction my a** lol,,,,It was hot... Loved it ... The reys and reynas on the cover is hot. I could not put it to rest Until i was at the end of the story.. King Macho kept it superficial in this story. FIVE STARS ALL THE WAY!

                              Book Description

This important new study presents a systematic and definitive critique of Ronald Dworkin's highly influential theory of liberal equality. Focusing on the connection Dworkin attempts to establish between economic markets and liberal egalitarian political morality, the study examines his contention that markets have an indispensable role to play in the articulation of liberal ideals of distributive justice, individual liberty, and state neutrality. Subjecting the central tenents of this theory to sustained critical analysis, the author argues that Dworkin's attempt to establish deep affinities between the market and equality is unsuccessful and his proposed solutions to some central controversies in political theory are seriously flawed. This powerful examination of the work of America's leading public philosopher reveals some timely lessons about the hazards and limitations of the market as a device for the articulation and realization of egalitarian justice.

                                Book Description

This book presents the contributions of the 20th century to economic theory in a mathematical language and in historical sequence. General equilibrium is the focal point of the book; but also a number of macroeconomic models, especially with respect to the first half of the century, are considered. Dynamic models are extensively studied per se, and not merely as extensions of their static counterparts. The book with its extensive bibliography gives a broad view over the developments in mathematical economics and is therefore an invaluable source of information for researchers and students working in this field.

                                  Book Description

This book examines contemporary legal and policy issues facing banking and micro-finance supervision and regulation in Zambia. The book sets out an interdisciplinary exposition of the law. It provides an interface of financial services law and practice. Relevant aspects of business management and economic theory are examined as well. The book attempts to permeate intellectual spheres that have not been explored in depth before. In essence, this is not a simple textbook on the introductory aspects of a particular field of law, as is often the case with many books that have titles such as "Introduction to Business Law" or "Fundamentals of Tort Law", and so forth. By contrast, the book breaks new ground in the area of financial services regulation. Indeed, a law in context approach is presented, giving added value to the field of knowledge in the book.

You probably won't get a raise in 7 days just because you read this book, but it helps to have someone explain how your boss ('power') sees the issue of a raise ('money): how to talk money to power. The authors also provide some useful information on patterns of compensation and the whole psychology of HR departments. Recommended (but don't expect a raise, ok?)

'Dr Cracknell's book reads convincingly, coming as it does from a pioneer in the field. Here is a useful and readable guide to the way evaluation, in the past two decades, has emerged from the shadows. Read it, and make your own evaluation' - Developments

'The book is well written, clear and reasonably concise.... I would have no hesitation in recommending it as a textbook or basic instruction on the topic of evaluation in development aid.... It is likely to be a major reference source for me for some time' - Impact Assessment and Project Appraisal

`Clearly this is a most valuable volume for those interested in development assistance' - John MacArthur, Journal of Agricultural Economics

This book is a 'must-have' for all development professionals. Basil Cracknell begins by reviewing the state-of-the-art of development aid evaluations, including the history, the basic concepts, the methodological problems associated with the choice of techniques, the differences between monitoring and evaluation, the role of evaluation in organizational learning, how to ensure that evaluation findings lead to action, the need for evaluation reports to be user-friendly, and the role of automated data systems.

He then considers the key issues and problems in aid evaluation, such as the trend towards impact evaluation, the importance of sustainability, stakeholder analysis, and special problems associated with sectors such as research and development, poverty alleviation and structural adjustment.

He explores how aid evaluators can reconcile the requirements of accountability and objectivity with the growing realization that some kind of participatory approach is essential if one is to really understand the impact of people-centred projects on the intended beneficiaries.

In Generation Risk: How To Protect Your Teenager From Smoking And Other Dangerous Behavior, Corky Newton reveals the extent to which the tobacco industry seeks to entrap adolescent children into addiction. These insidious efforts are abetted by a teen's immaturity, access to indulgences (especially through the Internet), and the mixed cultural messages generated by entertainment and peer group pressures. Corky goes on to inform concerned parents what they can do to help their teenage son or daughter respond to the formidable forces of their peers and culture in order avoid entrapment into addictive and self-destructive behaviors and fads, foremost of which is smoking, drinking, and the use of drugs for recreational purposes. A very highly recommended addition to personal and community library parenting reference collections, Generation Risk combines solid psychological strategies with hard facts and data, outlines highly useful "refusal" skills; and will enable a parent to communicate effectively and persuasively with their son or daughter.

5 out of 5 stars A must for parents and grandparents of teens.......2001-02-03

Corky Newton speaks with an authentic and knowledgeable voice, as a mother, and as a tobacco company executive. Transcripts of interviews conducted with teenagers across the country helps us understand these baffling and alien people that we nevertheless love, cherish and pin our hopes for the future on. Her description of the sensual pleasures of opening a fresh pack of cigarettes and taking a first puff made this ex-smoker nostalgic.

Todays's teenagers face an ever increasing array of real and dangerous risks. A friend of mine's teenage son was offered drugs for sale three times one Saturday afternoon in San Francisco, and she was with him! The portrayal of teenage behavior in the movie Traffic is tragically real for some.

Ms. Newton shows us how to communicate with our teenagers, with honesty and integrity being one key, and avoidance of the word "don't" being another. From her own experience she tells of how she reacted to finding cigarettes in her son's backpack and learning of her daughter's tongue piercing, over the telephone. She discusses clearly the facts about smoking, addiction and disease although these in and of themselves are not effective in preventing many teens from smoking.

Her final chapter contains twenty-seven suggestions to help prevent teenagers from smoking and engaging in other self-destructive risk taking behavior. I wish I could send them to every parent. I have to my daughters for my not yet teen grandchildren, and to my friends with teenagers. I encourage them to share this remarkable book with their teenage children.

                                      Book Description

Between December 1941 and May 1942, the British Empire suffered a series of humiliating defeats in the Far East. Three years later the Japanese were defeated by British and Commonwealth forces at Kohima and Imphal and in the battles for Burma. This transformation in the fortunes was in large part due to the development of jungle warfare doctrine and the resulting improvements in training, tactics and equipment. This book examines British Army conventional forces that fought in the Far East, showing how the dissemination of doctrine improved training, and helped 14th Army's infantry divisions secure victory.

                                      Customer Reviews:

                                      3 out of 5 stars A Bit of a Disappointment...........2005-10-11

When I picked up this volume on the British Army in the Far East in 1941-45 and saw that Alan Jeffreys, a curator at the Imperial War Museum, had written it, I expected a first-class product. Alas, I was a bit disappointed by this volume due to the sparse coverage of the first two years of the war in Asia and the inadequate amount of detail on unit tables of organization and equipment (TOE). While the writing style and information that is presented are decent enough, it seems that the author only wanted to primarily focus on the last year of the war, i.e, the phase that the Commonwealth troops were winning. While one certainly does not expect an encyclopedic coverage in an Osprey title, this volume does not appear to present the type and amount of detail found in other Battle Orders titles (indeed, this seems more like an effort for the campaign series). Even the author's conclusion that the British adoption of a jungle warfare doctrine was a major element in reversing the Commonwealth's fortunes in South Asia seems to ignore the fact that US air and sea operations had virtually isolated the Japanese forces in the Burma-India theater from receiving further reinforcements after mid-1944.

The introductory section of this volume follows the series format, with a brief discussion of the combat mission of British forces in the Far East, which notes that the defense of the naval base at Singapore was the main operational focus. The section on training is lengthy, including noting that the British had one unit in Malaya - the 2nd Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders -that was fairly well trained in jungle warfare tactics. Unfortunately, the author's overly brief coverage of the Malayan campaign presents only a few tactical snippets of that unit's activities, making it difficult to assess what value this unit had. The section on division organization provides a short history of each British, Australian and Indian division in theater, but only a few of the line and block charts go below division level and none go below brigade level. Unlike other Osprey Battle Order volumes, there are almost no charts listing personnel or equipment holdings, except for one chart that shows artillery holdings across the four different types of Commonwealth divisions. Armored units - beyond a simple table listing numbers of tanks in theater in 1944 - are virtually absent from these pages. Given that Indian and Australian units often had non-standard TOEs, the author should have made greater effort to clarify unit structures - as is expected in this series.

The volume includes eleven 2-D maps: Japanese strategic plans in the Far East; Training sites in Southeast Asia; dispositions of Commonwealth forces in Malaya, December 1941; the Battle of Slim River; Commonwealth dispositions on Singapore; 1st Arakan campaign; the capture of Mandalay; the Japanese offensive at Imphal-Kohima; opening moves at Kohima; the British counterattack at Kohima; the British counteroffensive in June 1944. Unfortunately, the author does not provide anything like a theater order of battle for Commonwealth forces at any particular date, so trying to determine "the big picture" is futile with this volume. The author does provide a 2-page bibliography and a campaign chronology.

I was really stunned that this volume has virtually no mention of the 11,000 Commonwealth troops (6 battalions) lost at Hong Kong in December 1941 and no mention of the Commonwealth OB in Burma in December 1941. Nor is there any significant mention of British troops who fought in the Dutch East Indies (where I believe several thousand were captured) or China. Even the author's skimpy coverage of the forces available to Percival in Malaya is difficult to follow (must read division thumb-nail sketches). The First Arakan offensive in 1943 is also covered very briefly and the Chindits are almost ignored. It is clear that this author wanted to skirt quickly past this string of disasters and get to Imphal-Kohima, where he can recount the jocks of 2nd British Infantry Division giving the Japanese Army a sound thrashing. The author concludes his campaign narrative with General Slim's boast that his forces had given the Japanese "the biggest defeat in their whole history." Given the catastrophic defeats suffered across the board by the Japanese after mid-1942, it seems rather a tad absurd to single out the defeat of only three of their divisions as "their greatest defeat ever."

Readers attempting to digest the changes in the Commonwealth forces in the Far East between 1941-45 will find this volume of little help, since so little information is provided on the initial force structure. The author's labored dissection of the evolution of British jungle warfare doctrine, while perhaps illuminating for some readers, seemed tedious and with little point. The Commonwealth forces won at Kohima-Imphal because they had vastly superior firepower and were close to their base of supply, while the Japanese troops were virtually out of supply. Jungle warfare doctrine didn't help the Chindits much - essentially a waste of three infantry brigades - and Slim's victories in '44-45 were due more to combined arms tactics than any "jungle tactics." Indeed, it was the ability of Commonwealth (and US C-47s, which the author ignores) logistic troops and engineers to build roads through jungles and over mountains and cross wide rivers that contributed most to victory in Burma.

                                        Book Description

Drawing on their unrivaled field experience in Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa, authors Mark Beaman and Steve Madge have combined forces with some of Europe's finest bird artists to produce the region's most comprehensive guide ever. This is the first book to cover every species to have occurred in the region, including vagrants and accidentals--nearly nine hundred species in total. Color illustrations depict each bird and its main plumage stages and subspecies. An extensive text explains all aspects of identification, status, and habitat, while full-color maps within the text offer detailed distributional information.

During the compilation of this book, Beaman and Madge traveled throughout the region, from Iceland and Siberia to the Cape Verde Islands, Egypt, and Georgia. Their field experience is reflected in the breadth and accuracy of the information presented in this guide and in the thorough treatment of difficult or little-known groups. The innovative design of the book makes it accessible to beginning and expert birdwatchers alike. The Handbook of Bird Identification for Europe and the Western Palearctic is the ultimate reference guide for every birdwatcher interested in the region.

4 out of 5 stars If you want a field guide buy a field guide.......2002-12-20

The previous reviewer criticised this for being too heavy to take to the field. That's hardly what it's for! To get 900 birds and this much information into a field guide you had to have had a free magnifying glass to read it. As to complaints that some of its political geography is outdated, Pshaw! A book as good as this takes years to prepare, it's never going to be able to follow the fast changing countries of Eastern Europe. It's irrelvant if Czechoslovakia doesn't exist as a single political entity anymore, everyone knows what area it refers to.
This is a superb achievement but it needs to be judged for what it is not what it doesn't try to be!
If you want a good European bird field guide, the recent Collins book is probably the best field guide for any region ever.

3 out of 5 stars The ultimate guide for identification?.......2000-02-02

I was a little disappointed when I finally got my copy, since I expected more based on the ads and the book's price. I can recommend this book for those collectors who want to have ALL the nice bird books, but a non-European would find it way too heavy to carry in the field, and citizens of almost every European country would find outdated (i.e 10 years old) information on the distribution of several species. Even the country boundaries are representing pre-1990 status in the Eastern part of Europe (Czechoslovakia does not exist as one country any more etc.). While two thumbs down for the distribution maps, the text is OK (although not free of mistakes, either) and the pictures range from mediocre to very good. If you are on a tight budget buy only Svensson et al's Collins Bird Guide (under a different title in the US though) for less than half of this book's price but has excellent pictures and a perfect size for your pocket.

5 out of 5 stars An excellently detailed one volume book.......1999-05-13

This book has a well thought out format with beautiful, detailed illustrations of the species in their different plumages. It is the only current one volume presentation of the birds of the western palearctic. It is thoughtfully written and the distribution maps are nicely detailed and easily understood.
