Book Description
A hands-on resource for applying regenerative design technologies
Regenerative Design Techniques provides practical and applied information on sustainable and regenerative principles, as well as techniques for analyzing and implementing these principles into the design of a structure or site. Written in a clear and accessible style, this book enables readers to easily and immediately apply all the material presented.
Environmental concerns that affect design are covered, along with issues such as water and waste, as well as information on energy and shelter. Specific topics examined within these broad issues include:
- Water quality, harvesting, runoff, and gray water
- Solid waste, recycling, reuse, and treatment
- Heat transfer, solar energy, and sun control
- Foundations, greenhouses, and indoor air quality
- Shelter design using overhangs and passive heating
- And many more
Complete with a companion Web site (www.wiley.com/go/melby) providing supplemental images, text, calculations, and additional resources, Regenerative Design Techniques is an invaluable resource to landscape architects, architects, environmental engineers, planners, and civil engineers, as well as students in these disciplines.

Sadly, nothing like "the best so far".......2003-06-20
For more detail, see my forthcoming book review in Landscape & Urban Planning, or the recent review (not by me) in Landscape Architecture Magazine.
As an author whose main focus is on sustainability in landscape architectural practice, I go out of my way to encourage anyone with similar expertise. However, Regenerative Design Techniques (RDT) will disappoint anyone whose focus is landscape-specific. More than 2/3 of the book concerns buildings exclusively, on topics such as solar water and space heating or indoor air quality. It is not a bad book on green architecture, and contains much useful (although already widely published) information, but is definitely NOT primarily about landscape architecture as claimed by its title. Of its landscape-specific information, some is actively misleading, such as the claim that automatic-control irrigation uses 75% MORE water than a handheld hose (true only if the controller is maladjusted and the hose-holder is exquisitely attentive). The single review on Amazon that praises the book so highly is written by someone from the same university as the authors.
If there were no solid landscape-specific information available, this book might have been a first step. However, that information is available from a wide range of sources including (but by no means limited to) my own books and articles for Landscape Architecture Magazine. Again, as a book on green BUILDINGS, RDT is not bad; as a title on landscape architecture it is extremely limited.
Best Sustainable Design Book Yet!.......2002-10-15
The book Regenerative Design Techniques by Melby and Cathcart is a welcomed contribution to the field of sustainable design. The book has everything needed for a textbook except problems, yet is so smoothly constructed that it can be read straight through from cover to cover. For most of us in the field, it will be one of the first general reference books available.
The book begins by painting a broad view of the need for highly integrated sustainable design, not limited to only water or energy. The chapters then work their way through the general areas ? water, energy, shelter, waste, and landscapes. The approach used for each specific topic is highly effective. The concept is introduced, with general concepts and drawings. Then specific information for construction is offered and engineering tables for actual designs. Most importantly, sample calculations, drawings, and photographs of actual cases are incorporated.
In a field that has been strong on ideals and short on details, this is a rich addition. It makes one realize how much we have been missing up until now.

Book Description
The popular Mexican cartoonist makes his American debut.
Best-selling Mexican cartoonist Jis (Jose Ignacio Solorzano) makes his American debut in Cats Don't Exist. With a childlike mastery of the obvious, an inspired sense of mischief, and hilarious insight into the human divine, Jis' comics at once recall the sensibilities of both Jules Feiffer and Terence McKenna. They are penetrating and baffling, honing in on the utter astonishment one must feel at having been born human, offering simple, earthy insights in a cosmically foreign landscapeor vice versa.
Deceptively minimalistic, Cats Don't Exist collects a handful of comic stories and individual drawings that will nudge the lucky reader gently into a dissonant universe. Included in this collection are the title story, "Cats Don't Exist," which introduces us to a world where cats replace aliens as the boogeyman of the human psyche; "To Our Dear Enemies," a thank you note to the censors for infusing boring old sex with intrigue; and "Guilt as an Aphrodisiac," wherein the author discusses his lust for rat witches and expresses his desire to snore shamelessly. Jis' work is an evolution in psychedelia, with a visionary sense of absurdity and humanity that will render you incapable of wiping that silly smirk off your face.

surreal splendour.......2006-01-06
One of the most imaginative art collections i've seen in years. Especially likely to interest fans of Jim Woodring (the "Frank" comics). B&W art, with 7 pages of colour in the center. Content runs from humourous to profound, includes some adult content. Some multiple page stories, a few 2-panel strips, and Lots of single illustration statements (packed together tightly with many to a page); very low white space quotient. I Highly recommend.

Book Description
Against the backdrop of a robust economy, hundreds of thousands of people in this country remain out of work for long periods of time, causing economic and psychological hardships for entire families. Hardest Times examines in depth what happens to men, and to their families, when they remain out of work for longer than six months, a period the government designates as long term unemployment. Cottle examines long term unemployment as a traumatic event, which creates in those who experience it conditions resembling symptoms of loss and post-trauma. Through the words of men who have experienced long term unemployment, he demonstrates that work is crucial to the formation of a man's identity, and that without work, many men often find no purpose for living. The in-depth studies that Cottle undertook reveal here why some men abandon their families or, in some instances, are driven to commit murder or suicide in the face of lingering unemployment. These often heart wrenching stories encourage readers to consider the implications of long term unemployment for the men who experience it, the families who endure it, and the society that tolerates it. Cottle's approach demonstrates that unemployment cannot be examined strictly in statistical terms, but that ultimately it must be explored in human terms, for it affects both the unemployed worker and his family. Instead of treating long term unemployment as simply another social problem, Cottle argues that it must be treated as a serious, often life-threatening, disorder, whose cure is clearly discernible. By reading the words of these men, the reader will understand how, even in this time of shifting gender roles, men in large measure still define themselves by the work they do, rather than the relationships that they cultivate. This unique approach to the problem of long term unemployment gives a human face to the problem and encourages readers to rethink the nature of working and not working and its special importance to men.

Hardest Times: The Trauma of Long-Term Unemployment.......2007-01-11
I purchased this title as part of an effort to understand what happened to my family when my father was fired and was subsequently unable to replace his job. The book was almost unbearably sad to read, but it rang absolutely true to the way I remember this crisis and its effect on my father and our family, especially the overwhelming sense of shame we all lived with. Mr. Cottle lists his research and statistics in the first chapter, and then he simply tells stories of trauma experienced by the various men he interviewed. The stories haunt you long after you've put the book back on the shelf. They make you wonder how to really help these men and their families. And you're also left with a more compassionate view of the long-term unemployed. They aren't lazy, useless folks to be disposed of, but human beings with souls who have experienced what amounts to a life tragedy. They need our compassion, not our judgment.

Forget about Ferber.......2000-05-22
After years of trying to get my son to sleep through the night and not liking Dr. Ferbers theories at all, I read this book and had my 5 year old sleeping through the night, in his own bed, in 2 weeks. This books breaks down the sleeping problems into several different chapters, With different methods for different children! This book gives helpful advise for bedtime and also gives advise on how your daytime attitudes are effecting sleeping habits. I recommend this book to anyone with an older child who doesn't sleep.
Book Description
The Hostage Rescue Manual is a comprehensive, illustrated source on the dynamic operations which have saved hundreds of lives in hostage situations around the world. It is based on strategies that have proved successful in numerous incidents, including the landmark SAS rescue at Prince's Gate, London, and is compiled by an author with intimate and practical knowledge of the field. The success of a rescue is often determined in the hours leading up to confrontation. Once an incident has been contained, a large share of the responsibility for a successful conclusion rests with the hostage negotiator, whose job it is to save the lives of both hostage and hostage-taker. But if negotiations fail, it becomes necessary to send in the hostage-rescue team to resolve the situation by force and skill. The Hostage Rescue Manual explains the complex factors that determine the entry methods undertaken by a team, with discussion of the pros and cons of stealth versus dynamic approaches, plus the significance of distraction in securing successful site entry. Operations in widely differing locations, from nuclear power plants to airliners are detailed, as are the range of special weapons available to the men and women tackling each incident. We learn of the multiple roles played by participants, such as the use of snipers as intelligence sources. With vivid photographs and diagrams of rescue units in action, Hostage Rescue Manual is the complete reference work on counter-terrorist procedures all over the world. This revised edition brings the book completely up to date with an entirely new section devoted to developments in hostage rescue, among them operations in Russia and Iraq, since first publication.
Customer Reviews:
What to expect in a publicly available book.......2007-07-22
In a "manual" available to anyone, one cannot expect magic on the pages. This book covers the basics, which any operator knows, all advanced training IS mastery of the basics. No book, manual, video, or seminar makes one a super SWAT/SEAL/Ninja/Ranger/Sniper/HRT man. For a new team starting off, this is a decent manual to outline the realities and requirements for hostage rescue. Leroy Thompson has spent more time in the field than most operators have spent in service. I enjoy his articles and books and you should too.
Really Disappointing.......2005-12-28
This was bought for me as a gift so I can't complain about the price, but the content is sadly lacking. Black and white photos and no substance. If you have ever been in the military or in law enforcement, you already know whats in this book if not more. This is more for archair commandos and wannabees then professionals. And it is certanily not, a how to manual.
Not more but a short overview.......2003-05-15
This book actually covers most topics concerning hostage rescue. It is well written and easy to read.
But it doesn't offer any details, just some short overview.
E.g. it deals with hostage negotiation for about 3 pages, whereas I got a professional book that has almost 300 pages just about this topic.
If you are a professional already, or if you will rely on many other sources of information, than you should consider buying this book in order to have a nice summary of all main topics.
But don't get the idea, this book alone will help you doing your job - it'll be lethal!
I personally am really disappointed and will send it back to amazon!!
Mediocre overview.......2003-01-16
This book provides only a shallow overview of some of the many aspects of hostage rescue and dynamic entry. It may be suited to give an outsider a brief glimpse of what's involved in hostage rescue, but it has little to offer to anyone in the business. Billing it as a `manual' is somewhere between an overstatement and outright false advertising.
Hostage Rescue Manual- not really!.......2002-12-07
Well I say like someone else "more of an outline than an actual manual" and that is true. If you looking for room entry-tactics, well then this is not the book. It show basic information of what is needed to do on a HRT operation but still not enough. It show veichle and bus takedown but only basic, and if you have read other books on the subject then you will problably know how to do this. Don't think you can start a HRT group after reading this. I learn some things but not worth buying the book for.

Book Description
B> Beginning with the establishment of the Indian National Congress in 1885, and concluding with the first years of independence, this is the story of India's struggle for independence, with Gandhi as its central figure. Books in this Seminar Studies in History series consist of a brief "Introduction" and/or "Background" to the subject, valuable in bringing the reader up-to-speed on the area being examined, followed by a substantial and authoritative section of "Analysis" focusing on the main themes and issues. There is a succinct "Assessment" of the subject, a generous selection of "Documents" and a detailed bibliography. The pivotal question posed by the book is how a valued and seemingly permanent imperial possession - the "jewel in the crown" - came to be given its freedom only sixty years after the establishment of the Congress. On the face of it, decolonization seems to have been the direct result of nationalist pressure, but Ian Copland suggests that the reality was more complex - he gives the full social, political and economic context up to the transfer of power in 1947. Helpful features include a biographical guide to the main protagonists and a chronological outline of the main events Readers interested in the history of India, history of Imperialism or British history.

Book Description
Alfred Deakin (1857â1919) is recognised as an architect of Australian Federation and served three terms as Prime Minister. Though his life has been well documented, no previous biographer has studied the intense spiritual life of this would-be poet, preacher and mystic. Drawing from volumes of Deakinâs private journals and prayerbooks, Al Gabay presents us with a complex man who had a profound sense of history and who, being convinced that his political life had a divine mandate, yearned for an understanding of his true duty. Throughout his life he was absorbed and influenced by the Occult and this book reveals the implications of this private spirituality for the political history of Australia. This illustrates not only the intellectual climate of Deakinâs era but Victorian ideas of religious doubt, evolution, and reform.
