5 out of 5 stars A Void That Needs Filling.......2000-06-21

I've long been a lover of books and prints illustrating what can be done with camera and film by a technically masterful artist. Craig Morey's illustrations were entrancing and wondrous to behold and I am the better man for having the opportunity to share them.

Like others before me, my copy of the book will be a treasured part of my library. Unfortunately, my copy was severely damaged when my home was flooded during the El Nino rains a few years back and I spend my time searching book repositories in search of a copy of this treasure.

One of the reviewers here suggests that this book has no value or merit yet there does not appear to be a copy left available. Perhaps this disgruntled reviewer would like to clear up some space on his shelves and would give me the opportunity to purchase his copy where it will hold a hallowed place on my shelves.

5 out of 5 stars An Instant Classic.......1999-11-25

Like Kedgemon, I, too, am a photographer of nudes, and when he gives *Studio Nudes* only 1-star, and offers comments denigrating the quality of the prints or reproduction(?), I have to wonder if he was looking at the same book which I regard as a treasure and one of the small handful of books I'll possess until the day I die, no matter how bad times may get.

By way of disclosure, I have to admit that Craig and I have corresponded via e-mail and exchanged prints with each other as well over the last several years.

While it's true that *Studio Nudes* uses the same setup for every shot, this approach is not unprecedented and does tend to focus attention on the subject matter. Let's not lose sight of the fact that this method applies to this particular project. Morey is quite capable of doing many kinds of photography, for I've seen portraits and even some color work, as well as some black and whites that were set up differently.

I can only assume that something happened to the book Kedgemon possesses. My own print is absolutely flawless and the prints exquisite even to the degree of almost having the patina of actual photographic prints.

I like Print 31 also, but it is far from the only good print in the book, and while I've gotten several prints from Mr. Morey, that was not even one of the ones I requested. This is truly one of those books where it is hard to pick favorites, since every selection is so outstanding.

I should add, I think, that this is not the case of likes defending likes. My own photography is about as different as it could be from his. We work in different formats, he in medium and I in 35mm. I also do a lot of color work, whereas (at least it's my impression) Craig is mostly black and white. Craig is pretty much a formalist, his camera on a tripod, whereas my own style is mise en scene and hand-held. Even so, I can't get enough of his nudes.

Truly if six stars were available, I'd have to give it six.

        5 out of 5 stars A extraordinary visual feast.......1998-01-12

"Studio Nudes" is one of the finest example of b&w erotic nude photography I have seen.

The photos balance on the fine line between classic nude imagery and explicit sexuality.

Morey captures the essence of the subject without resorting to trite coy expressions or overdone posing. The lighting is exquisite. Plates 12, 15, and 31 are true masterpieces of the genre. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the art of nude photography."

2 out of 5 stars Uninteresting, Sexual, B&W photos of Erotic Dancers.......1997-12-08

I am also a photographer af nudes. The reviewer above is correct about the best photo in the book. Plate 31 is extremely sensual, very beautiful. It is the reason I bought the book as well as one of those photographs I wish I had taken myself. Some of the others are attractive or thoughtful. However, the book as a whole was very disappointing to me. Each of the photographs is taken from the same perspective with similar lighting and identical background. While this tactic might well be used to draw the viewers attention to the subject, I found most of the book to be uninteresting at best. Many of the voyeuristic photos are very blunt and more sexual than sensual (perhaps indicative of Morey¹s work as a photographer for Penthouse magazine). Finally, of the 35 plates in the book, many are spotted as if there were dust on the negatives when they were printed. I am a perfectionist with my own prints and found the print quality in this book to be distracting.

5 out of 5 stars Stylized Sensuality Marries Art and Erotica.......1997-04-22

Mr. Morey's consistent use of a canvas-draped, minimalist set and careful lighting are such a strong presence in his black and white nudes that together with the female form they amount to a signature. Yet within these confines Mr. Morey achieves a powerful blend of the artistic and the erotic, a blend rarely to be found in modern art. At its best, his work creates images of indelible force, beauty and a beguiling mysticism, such as plate 31 in this book. I strongly recommend this collection

        Book Description

"Every few generations a great seminal book comes along that challenges economic analysis and through its findings alters men's thinking and the course of societal change. This is such a book, yet it is more. It is a "poetic" philosophy, mathematics, and science of economics. It is the quintessence of the thought that has been focused on the economic reality. Henceforce all economists must take these conclusions into account lest their analyses and scholarship be found wanting.

"The entropy of the physical universe increases constantly because there is a continuous and irrevocable qualitative degradation of order into chaos. The entropic nature of the economic process, which degrades natural resources and pollutes the environment, constitutes the present danger. The earth is entropically winding down naturally, and economic advance is accelerating the process. Man must learn to ration the meager resources he has so profligately squandered if he is to survive in the long run when the entropic degradation of the sun will be the crucial factor, "for suprising as it may seem, the entire stock of natural resources is not worth more than a few days of sunlight!" Georgescu-Rogen has written our generation's classic in the field of economics."—Library Journal

The enthalpy H=G+TS of a system is a high entropy energy, if the convertible Gibbs Free Energy G is much smaller than the energy TS, which already has been converted (entrepein) into heat (with TS being the product of absolute temperature and entropy, see also Entropy Demystified: The Second Law Reduced to Plain Common Sense). To put it simple: There is high entropy energy.

A system, which surely is interesting for humans, is the biosphere. It is an open system. but the openness is limited. ALL activities within that system increase the entropy. This entropy needs to be thrown out. Some activities within the system also may clog the interfaces, which the biosphere needs in order to throw out (to export) entropy. Therefore it is very simple to understand, that any economical growth, which is related to entropy production, has boundaries. Consequently the relation between entropy production (including interface pollution) and economical growth needs to be understood.

Sorcery and miracles often have the claim in common, that irreversible changes can be reversed. We now put our faith into the "invisible hand". Don't mess with markets, where the players need the negentropically unlimited self-healing power of cartoon characters. Roegen is the first economist, who at least started to question such witchcraft. That alone is a good reason to read the book.

It must be admitted that Georgescu-Roegen's understanding of entropy was flawed. He, along with many other authors including physicists, thought entropy was a measure of disorder. It is not. That entropy is not a measure of disorder is discussed in a recent scholarly article by chemistry Prof. Frank Lambert, who has a nice web site devoted to the topic. More to the point, it was also discussed in Beard and Lozada's book about Georgescu-Roegen (p. 88, "Economics, Entropy, and the Environment: The Extraordinary Economics of Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen"). It's not easy to say what entropy actually is, but it is straightforward for scientists to measure that, say, the standard entropy of one mole of iron (about 55.8 grams of iron) is 27.7 Joules per Kelvin.

While Georgescu wasn't completely right about all of entropy's aspects, his attacks on Boltzmann's H-Theorem, and on the "information as entropy" school, show completely correct understanding of other aspects of entropy. Furthermore, in his indictment of neoclassical dynamic economics, he was the vanguard of critics who decry slavish devotion to mathematical models which assume we know the future (at least probabalistically). Absorbing Georgescu's lessons would've spared Economics Nobel Laureates Merton and Scholes their disastrous experience running the failed hedge fund Long-Term Capital Management (described in the book "When Genius Failed"): change happens, the past does not always predict the future, and the consequences of one's actions sometimes cannot be imagined by anyone. When investing money, that's a good perspective; when talking about man's effect on the environment, as Georgescu was, it's a perspective that could save the planet.

1 out of 5 stars Good intentions no substitute for poor science.......2005-12-20

Georgescu-Roegen's intentions are laudable, as are many of his proposals. The thermodynamic basis of this work, unfortunately, is unsupportable. This is a pity, as it has left his critique of capitalism open to dismissal, and has contributed to a generation of obfuscation in social and environmental theory.

The problem, simply put, is this: while it sounds convincing to most lay-people (and even many physicists, chemists and engineers) to equate thermodynamic entropy with "disorder", this is based on a meaningless misinterpretation of the second law of thermodynamics. The second law of thermodynamics simply states that energy tends to disperse, if it is not hindered from doing so. It says nothing about "orderliness", and nothing about availability of matter.

Entropy is an extensive property of thermodynamic systems. It is not a property of energy, and certainly not of matter. It is nonsensical to speak of "high- or low-entropy" energy. It is even more nonsensical to speak of "high- or low-entropy" matter. Better to speak of energy quality ("the sun provides us with high-quality energy, and low-quality energy is re-radiated back into space"). Entropy is used to measure the "concentration" (I use this term for illustration only) and hence the usefulness or availability to us of energy, within a given system of matter and energy. The second law of thermodynamics tells us nothing about the tendency of matter to become more or less useful or available to us. There is no thermodynamic basis for reading inevitable decay onto physical, biological or social systems.

Dr. Frank L. Lambert, Professor Emeritus (Chemistry) of Occidental College, Los Angeles, has carried out extensive work over the past few years to demythologise the popular (and, all too frequently, specialist) misunderstanding of the second law of thermodynamics. For anyone contemplating reading "The entropy law and the economic process", I would strongly advise that you first look at Lambert's website: http://www.entropysite.com. He goes through this in detail in multiple format aimed at a range of audiences from lay-person to scientist and engineer.

This review is not intended to be disparaging, towards either Georgescu-Roegen, or others who share the common misunderstanding of the second law of thermodynamics. The problem is deeply entrenched and it will be a long time before the myths around entropy and the second law are dispelled. This is a start.

5 out of 5 stars A Law of Thermodynamics as it Applies to Economics..........2002-09-23

...entropy is the idea that there is a growing disorder to all systems, living and otherwise. Roegen is the social philosopher who originally, successfully tied the no limit-growth of capitalism to our decreasing natural resources, our increasing endangered species lists, and our decreasing resistances to a bunch of ailments...

I remember having to study passages of this book in college and my instructor said that there's no scientific data to verify what he's saying had any merit. And, now, today, mosquitoes and terrorists and brown outs have everybody up in arms. I can't say Roegen is prophetic, but his argument, to me, always did make a whole lotta sense...and, you know, the artists and the poets seem to have always intuited the validity of this great man's message.

What has really put things in perspective for me is my further readings... I've read works from EF Schumacher ("Small is Beautiful"), Rene Dubos ("A God Within"), Jeremy Rifkin ("Entropy"), and more recently, Derrick Jensen. And they all seem to speak to needing a more humane way of capitalism which doesn't seem bent on destroying everything in it's path.

There are many other authors who may be easier to read than Roegen, but you will find, if you are in anyway interested in the fate of the world, they all refer to his seminal work here.

                    Book Description

Can the "invisible hand" handle money? In this collection of essays George Selgin challenges the view that government regulation creates monetary order and stability, and instead shows it to be the main source of monetary crisis. br br The volume is divided into three sections. Part I refutes conventional wisdom holding that any monetary system lacking government regulation is "inherently unstable" and looks at the workings of market forces in an otherwise unregulated banking system. Part II draws on both theory and historical experience to show how various kinds of government interference undermine the inherent efficiency, safety and stability of a free monetary system. Part III completes the argument by addressing the popular misconception that a monetary system is unsound unless it delivers a stable output price-level.

Some people just shouldn't be managers. They somehow got promoted to management positions, but know nothing about the science of managing, and have no desire to learn.

"How Did You Manage That?" takes a "tongue in cheek" look at the characteristics of these misfits, while pointing out the serious nature of their management flaws. But more than that, "How Did You Manage That?" seeks to offer suggestions to the new or aspiring managers that will help them avoid the pitfalls which characterize today's management misfits.

Filled with interesting stories and examples, this easy-to-read book will be of valuable assistance to any readers who manage others, and seek to be good at what they do.

Professor Hart's book was written in 1989, which isn't that long ago, but the book is showing its age in that it only looks at political actors and does not spend much time analyzing the underlying economic background to the revolution.

He does have an intriguing chapter which shows the parallel revolutionary activity around the turn of the 20th century in Iran, China and Russia, as well as Mexico. Essentially, all these countries suffered from foreign control over capital availablity and resource extraction, facilitated by a complicit native oligarchy who maintained power through the rents obtained from selling off the resources to the highest bidders. That rent was then used to finance opulence instead of on the development of import substitution industries and agricultural and manufacturing sectors which would have provided jobs to the large underclasses.

Coupled with a lack of democratic safeguards by which to manifest their discontent, the bourgeois classes united with the working classes to foment revolutionary violence in all these countries.

Unfortunately, Hart spends too much time scapegoating US and European capitalists for making such inroads into Mexico's economy, instead of looking at how and why they were able to do so without much difficulty. Hart seems to follow the dependency theorist school, in which the late-industrializing countries are at the mercy of those which developed first, i.e. Britain, USA and France. This is not an incorrect assessment, but as more current research has shown in the work of such people as Doug North and Stephen Haber, this is not the whole story.

Hart also updated this work in 2002 with a new volume entitled "Empire and Revolution," which generally goes over the same territory, but looks even deeper at the damned gringos who were behind all of Mexico's misery. While I am not in complete disagreement with such an assessment, it is an oversimplification of Mexico's revolution and it is why I think that Hart's books on the subject are not aging well.

                                  5 out of 5 stars A classic.......2007-05-08

This book was originally Aptheker's PhD thesis and was written to de-bunk the idea that the enslaved Africans were docile and accepting of their lot. After reading this book, you will know that they were not docile or accepting of their lot and that slave revolts were more or less constant from the beginning of slavery.

It's not a fun read -- it's quite dry and mostly a carefully researched and documented listing of facts. But after you read it, your attitude toward how slavery affected the people enslaved will be different.

You'll know how the Ku Klux Klan came to be, how powerful the African-American people and culture were even while subjected to slavery, and you'll be able to spot so many lies that are being told today about slavery, black people in America, and white people in America.

Go ahead, read it. Yes, it's a little dry but it will change your life. It reads a lot faster if you skip the numerous footnotes.

5 out of 5 stars 200 years of slave insurrections.......2001-09-01

The author provides a "narrative of the numerous plots and rebellions that persistently rocked American slave society for over two centuries" (p.367). In so doing he hopes to dispel the generally accepted notion that the response of the American Negro to his bondage "was one of passivity and docility" (p.374). Behind this notion of docility lies the belief that African-American slaves were well treated by their masters, generally contented with their lot, and inferior to whites. Jefferson Davis asserted this notion of docility on January 10, 1861 in the United States Senate in "Declaring that he found the speculations as to whether 'our servants' would rebel or not 'exceedingly offensive' he went on to assert: 'Governments have tampered with slaves; bad men have gone among the ignorant and credulous people, and incited them to murder and arson; but of themselves - moving by themselves - I say history does not chronicle a case of Negro insurrection. (p.105)."

Herbert Aptheker's meticulous documentation of hundreds of cases of slave resistance, which often resulted in the death or grisly punishment of the slaves, easily refutes statements denying African-American discontent and rebelliousness. His collection of materials is quite remarkable, for slave state newspapers censored most accounts of insurrections. "The particulars, we are constrained to observe, must be withheld for the present, from motives of precaution (p.158)" typically wrote one Virginia newspaper. To achieve his narrative, Aptheker drew upon "government archives, personal letters (sometimes published in distant newspapers), journals, diaries, and court records (p.159)." The Aptheker book should be a standard reference work for anyone exploring this topic.

In arranging his materials, the author first discusses slave insurrection according to major themes, and then he describes the insurrections in chronological order. This reader sometimes felt overwhelmed with example after example of insurrection, especially when they were treated chronologically.

The thematic chapters on: "The Fear of Rebellion", "The Machinery of Control", and "Exaggeration, Distortion, Censorship" were particularly rich in materials that highlighted the American slave society's predicament. Many slave owners had valiantly fought in the Revolutionary war and championed republican principles. Yet, slave ownership was driving them away from these same principles by requiring them to place increasing limitations on free assembly, free speech, a free press and jury trials. Slave society began to live in a general siege atmosphere, especially after the Haitian revolution. Aptheker quotes one Virginian on the possibility of a slave insurrection; "I wish I could maintain, with truth ... that it was a small danger, but it is a great danger, it is a danger which has increased, is increasing, and must be diminished, or it must come to its regular catastrophe (p. 49)". In such a growing atmosphere of fear, the white inhabitants of the slave society felt themselves increasingly threatened and moved to curtail civil liberties. Abolitionist ideas could be "infectious" and possessing an abolitionist document was a crime. Free Negroes could not travel to other states without losing their right to return home, and they could not possess weapons. Vigilance committees began to replace the police and court systems. Slavery was no longer a topic that could be openly discussed by citizens. It would appear that removing the topic from discussion had the unfortunate consequence of undermining the republican institutions necessary for managing social change.

Aptheker's narrative is replete with fascinating historical tidbits. He carefully documents how religious instruction was aimed "to inculcate meekness and docility" in slaves (pp. 56-59) and quotes from a white preacher's sermon to slaves on why whippings, called "corrections", should be suffered patiently. The preacher goes to great lengths to demonstrate how any whipping is merited and concludes: "But suppose that even this was not the case - a case hardly to be imagined - and that you have by no means, known or unknown, deserved the correction you suffered; there is great comfort in it, that if you bear it patiently, and leave your case in the hands of God, He will reward you for it in heaven, and the punishment you suffered unjustly here shall turn to your exceeding glory hereafter. (p.57)". Another item describes John C. Calhoun's concerns about the loyalty of federal troops if they are called upon to suppress a slave revolt. The Secretaries of the Navy and Army were required to report on the numbers of Negroes, free or slave, in the U.S. military. Here it was reported that a regulation "forbade over one-twentieth of a ship's crew to be Negro (p.68)."

Woven throughout Aptheker's narrative are numerous references to maroons, or fugitive slaves who live in relatively inaccessible, generally swampy, areas and periodically prey on local residents. "Reports, no doubt greatly exaggerated, were current that two or three thousand Negroes were hiding in the Great Dismal Swamp ... (pp.307-308)." I suspect that assessing the relative prevalence of maroon activity is problematical and to his credit Aptheker carefully avoids such speculation. Aptheker simply cites maroon activity as further evidence of general slave discontent. I found less convincing Aptheker's attempt to identify periods of greater or lesser slave insurrectional activity, but this analysis is not crucial to the book's narrative. For example, while Aptheker uses this analysis to establish a causal link between increasing insurrectional activity and periods of economic stress, common sense might do just as well.

This reader admits to having approached this book with some reservations and a bias. Herbert Aptheker was an active member of the US Communist Party for a number of years. Quite a few years ago I completed a serious graduate school course in Marxist-Leninist thought, which required me to read all of the important original documents of Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin and Mao. I find it difficult to imagine that an intelligent person can read these materials and still become a Marxist-Leninist. I would like to think Dr. Aptheker was too busy doing his path breaking historical research to read all of the Communist classics. His American Negro Slave Revolts contains none of the turgid prose and convoluted theorizing that I associate with Marxist historians. We're spared discourses on the labor theory of value, class struggle, increasing concentration of capital, etc. As for its accuracy, I confess that I didn't check his footnotes. Curiously, I don't see this work widely cited. I wonder how many American historians are afraid to cite a Communist work, even when it's good research.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've ever read and worked........2000-02-13

I've been working about slavery for years, and that made me read lots of books that can be called an "ecologic murder". This book is the best that you can find about slave revolts in the United States. It fulfills two purposes, the first one, tell the truth about a subject that've been full of lies for more than 200 years. Second, make people think why this subject' been full of lies for more than 200 years. An accurate bibliogrpahy helps to understand all things that matter about slavery in the states.

2 out of 5 stars Narrative account gives to much credence to biased sources.......1998-11-28

Davis's book seeks to make the history of the events of 1741 more engaging by presenting them in a sort of narrative form. Unfortunately, this method does not allow for the necessary critical analysis. The major resource available to historians studying these events is a journal of the proceedings written by one of the judges in the case, and he wrote his journal for the explicit purpose of defending the proceedings against criticism. While Davis shows some skepticism in his handling of the sources, making the history into a narrative forced Davis to take his biased source a little too much at its word. Nonetheless, it is a fascinating subject and well worth exploring.

Davis has done an excellent job of painting a word picture of 1740s New York City, and its white residents' fears and concerns about slavery. The story of the uncovering of the "plot" and the subsequent executions of 34 people (white and black) is at one once a scholarly piece of work and an adventure tale. My only complaint was that Dr. Davis did not speculate as to the motivations of some of the white "plot leaders." Were Hughson and his wife merely tavern owners who tried to use Blacks for their own personal gain, or were they sympathetic with the plight of the slave and abolitionists 125 years before it was popular? Being a descendant of John Hughson, I was particularly interested in this question. None of my calls to Prof. Davis were returned.

                                            Book Description

"This book definitely provides material that is otherwise unavailable in a concise format on Texas birds. . . . For this reason, I think it will be an important resource for professional ornithologists, as well as birders." --Mark Lockwood, Secretary of the Texas Birds Records Committee, Texas Ornithological Society Whether it's the sudden, plunging dives of Brown Pelicans, the singing and aerial displays of Northern Mockingbirds, or the communal nesting of Purple Martins, innate and learned behaviors are some of the most fascinating things to observe in Texas birds. Even casual birdwatchers eventually ask, "why do they do that?" while serious birders and ornithologists seek to understand all the behaviors involved in feeding, flying, mating, and rearing young. But until now, it has been hard to find this information in one handy source. In this comprehensive, yet easy-to-use book, Kent Rylander distills data from many sources to provide an authoritative guide to the behavior of Texas birds. He begins by explaining the principles of animal behavior and illustrating how they can be applied to interpreting bird behaviors in the field. The majority of the book is devoted to accounts of more than 400 species of birds that are most likely to be encountered by Texas birdwatchers. Each account describes such behaviors as feeding, courtship, parenting, and other behaviors that are significant for that species. References to interesting and important articles from scientific journals are incorporated in the species accounts where appropriate, and line drawings illustrate some of the behaviors described. Kent Rylander is Professor of Biological Sciences at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

5 out of 5 stars A must own book on bird behavior.......2003-02-01

Rylander, a student of the famous Austrian animal behaviorist Konrad Lorenz, put forth considerable effort to extract noteworthy examples of innate and learned behavioral traits in Texas birds. All students of Texas birds and bird behavior should add this book to their library.
