Book Description
CAPTAIN FREEBIRD is a tightly woven graphic novel exploring the dark side of the American Dream. Purused by the evil Twilite Man, Cap drives the brutally scarred southwestern landscape with a pair of revolvers and a knack for getting into trouble. Despite his fondness for beer, remembering old friends, and saving damsels in distress, Fate has something far more cosmic in store for the star-spangled hero.

Excellent Satire.......2003-12-18
I think of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas whenever I read this richly illustrated novel. Captain Freebird is who Hunter S. Thompson would be if he were a superhero. He isn't the nicest guy, and he is very cynical, but deep in his heart he still believes in the dream that is America. Be prepared for a uncompromising look at the dark side of that dream, but be comforted in knowing that Captain Freebird is out there trying to make it a little bit better.

Cheaper by the dozens - a story of piece work.......2004-09-12
In "Frederick W. Taylor: The Father of Scientific Management - Myth and Reality" [1991] Taylor comes across as a son of the upper class, traipsing from one consultant engagement to another, stop watch in hand [or later on, stop watch somehow disguised so as not to upset the floor workers], a little humorous in his actions as he mucked about as something of an anthropologist going into the lost world of factories and loading docks.
I will always have a warm feeling for Taylor, who was played as a daft old clock-watcher with a ticker of gold by Clifton Webb in "Cheaper by the Dozen" -- that Saturday Night at the Movies perennial. The focus on the Frederick W. Taylor of Hollywood was different. It was on his home life, with a raft of children, and his attempts to bring Scientific Management to the home nest. The straightest path to job completion was his goal; the breakup of the job into streamlined tasks was his means. One recalls Webb deciding that the optimal way to button a man's vest was starting at the bottom and moving up. Brilliant!
Some of his critics pointed to Babbage and Coulomb as progenitors of time-study, but Taylor can place a fair claim on having invented it in 1881 as he studied the Mivale Steel Company lading process.
Was it really science? The evidence as I read it in this book by Charles D. Wrege and Ronald G Greenwood is that there was lot of pseudo science in Taylor's work, and a bit of fudging here and there. But he was on to something, and his followers, some of whom used that new invention, moving pictures, to break down and improve processes. Place Frank Gilbreth, author of "Cheaper by the Dozen," in this camp.
The book covers a lot of ground, but doesn't dig in much and analyze. For example, the Watertown Arsenal Strike of 1911, which was set off by workers less than enamored of piece work as promulgated by a Taylor protégé, is a pretty significant event, but it gets short shrift here. The book is really like a document, laying out the facts of Taylor's public life, and would thus be valuable to researchers, but the dust jacket promotion of the book as of value to the managers who would have interest in Drucker is not quite germane, in my opinion. The facts sometime seem to dispel some myth - but the work is that of an investigator who leaves it to the client to infer and conclude.

Okay with reservations.......2003-11-05
I've been a secretary for more than eighteen years. I did enjoy a lot of this book, and I sure wish that I had read it before I went to work for lawyers! LOL The author is spot on about them -- the worst tyrant I ever worked for was a lawyer.
However, I also felt the author had a negative attitude toward secretarial work. If she doesn't want to be a secretary, fine; be something else. Those of us who have chosen to make secretarial work a career chose it because we LIKE it. While I have worked for some lousy bosses, I have also worked for some terrific ones, and most of the people I have worked for have treated me with respect and appreciation. Truthfully, I find the stereotype of secretarial work being demeaning to be quite tiresome; but rather than refuting it, Ms. Sargent seems to be reinforcing it with her attitude.
By the way, I did the "Slam and Scream" on my tyrant of a lawyer boss almost three years before reading this book. LOL Osmosis? But a year or so later I landed my current position, as secretary to a religious official, and it is the secretarial job I intend to retire from.
Review from subversivesecretaries.com.......2003-02-12
Here is the book you've been waiting for. It lives up to its title. Who hasn't felt like slamming and screaming? And the slam and scream is actually a strategy that Carole recommends but only for dealing with lawyers who are used to confrontation and screaming as a way of communicating. She used it once with an attorney and got promoted. She has other more subtle strategies that won't get you fired for dealing with business executives.
She sees secretarial work as a sort of "Twins Syndrome" after the movie Twins in which one twin Arnold Schwarzenegger gets all the brawn, brains and success and the other twin Danny DeVito gets what's left over, which ain't much. DeVito's role is described as a sort of side effect -- when the embryo split, it left him with all the unwanted features. Carole feels the secretary's traditional role -- that of making the boss look good but obliterating herself -- is one in which the secretary gets be a sort of side effect. Carole notes the secretary's role is to help her boss get ahead but not to have any goals herself and that no other working partnership relationship "demands this of one partner. In every other employer-employee duo, the two work for their mutual professional advancement, [but] with the boss and the administrative assistant, the assistant stays behind while the boss gets ahead."
Her advice: Don't get into secretarial work in the first place. But if you're in it, find ways to work well in it. Like work for partners in a law firm and not associates. And never work for an office manager (they have no power). Go back to school. Pick up other skills. "You may already be out of your trap and just not know it. If you can imagine yourself doing something else for a living, you're most of the way there.... Remember that all you need to have a career instead of a mere job is a sense of where you want to go....Relentlessly promote yourself, give yourself a resume that looks like a professional, and, above all, try like the dickens....Don't give up...."
The cure for office politics.......2002-10-31
I've been a legal assistant at the same firm for seven years. The lawyers are actually okay but my boss is the office manager from hell. She is completely psycho. This book helped me figure why, and what to do about her. Read it!
Funny but somewhat exaggerated and misleading.......2002-10-16
I worked as an executive assistant for some years and got myself very nervous about the image of an executive assistant. However this book is somewhat adapated to some specific environnements rather aggressive.
The thing is that at the end, with this book, you might feel disgusted by your job as you rarely do it by passion. So, what I would say to somebody starting with this job: do not read this book unless you feel sure about your desires and you feel better than others. Should you not be self confident, this book could be a danger or a sake in some ways. You may take the risk... but this book remains very convincing in studying further to go out of this way ! This book is worth existing but can be misleading for unexperienced students starting their working life. You actually need to be pretty mature to read it as some advices are dangerous even if the author try to make people responsible of their decision-makings.
Great help for assistants, even if you like your job.......2002-02-16
This book saved my life. I have a great job at a trade association, and I don't want to give it up. But my boss left, and they "assigned" me to a woman who does not know how to manage people. She also doesn't stand up to the Exec. Director. This book says assistants are only as powerful as the boss we work for. She showed me how to get out by moving to another boss in a different department. Things are much better.
The reviewer below, Ms. Hunter, must not have read the whole book. There is a big chapter on how to keep your administrative job if you like it, and how to make it better.

Book Description
Led by Lieutenant Colonel Evans Carlson, the 2nd Marine Raider commandos were the celebrated "Gung Ho Battalion." In August 1942, as a diversion to the invasion of Guad-alcanal, the 219 Raiders traveled 2,000 miles by submarine to Makin Atoll. In one of the most daring attacks of World War II, they caused substantial damage to the Japanese-before making a nightmarishly hazardous withdrawal.
To an America badly in need of heroes, Carlson's Raid was the answer to a prayer. But the raid's long-term consequences were bloodier than anyone could have imagined. And, ultimately, the controversial Carlson's high profile would be his undoing.
This is the full story of that daring mission, its unforeseen consequences, and the decision made when the fighting was toughest-kept secret for fifty years-that would have brought a far different conclusion to the famous Makin Raid.
Customer Reviews:
Well Written Account of a Forgotten yet Exciting Action in the Pacific War.......2006-07-27
Smith is a pretty good writer for this style of book, essentially a regimental history. That genre, though used as source material is particularly excrable in writing style. But Smith pulls of a masterly work which could be claim of larger and more campaign-centred histories.
The essentials of Carlson's biography set up the mission requirements and the advent of this particularly class-less based fighting unit in WWII. Carlson has attracted a lot of controversy in life and death with his commando concept for the marines. In other countries such a figure as Carlson -- brash, socialist, schooled in guerrilla warfare by basically travelling with Mao's troops in pre-WWII China -- would not attract such attention. But the US with its particularly ideological slant on the world, anti-collectivist attitude, and mere fact that the US Marine Corps is perhaps one of the most conservative of institutions, it was inevitable that a man who believed in mythic leadership -- the notion that leaders lead by example -- would get under the skins of conservatives, turf defenders and those advocates of grander strategies.
Smith did not really cover too much of Carlson's ideology except to stated that he was no communist, but something worse -- "a socialist with a genuine fear of God." Such a man with a mission was dangerous in established institutions and went very far for the same reason a Orde Wingate -- he was a soldier that fights.
The book should be standard reading for any special operations person and tells the value of not only preparation, but how even the best laid plans can, and often will, go astray. Many people found fault in Carlson. I found his ability to improvise to be quirky and inspiring. I also found the fact that the raiders were not expecting snipers in trees also a glaring fault in their training.
I do not think there is much to be gained in arguing over the military value of the raid. It was paltry. Not even a blip on the screen of combat that presaged and followed. But it was a test run of a daring concept.
The value of the raider concept for combat in WWII is more controversial. There are those that argue you get greater bang for your buck by integrating these fighting men into traditional combat units. Certainly this was proved with the British-Commonwealth Commando raiding concept. It was also proved in Burma where clearly Orde Wingate's Chindits would have been better employed as a traditional British line divisions.
I like the book and rate it highly. I think it highly ironic that in 1943 the raider concept was ultimately crushed by the Marine "forces that be" and their units integrated into regular Marine Divisions. This contrasts with the obscene plethora of troops in the US Armed Forces who regard themselves as "Special Forces" -- to such a degree that the term has beome largely meaningless.
Factual histories reveal how messy reality is..........2006-01-05
Evans Fordyce Carlson was a loose cannon. The Raider concept was "emerging doctrine" (MilSpeak for "make up stuff as the situation develops"). Carlson's legacy is the modern Marine Corps fire team--a humble honor that Carlson would probably appreciate. As for the official record, "maverick" is an understatement.
George W. Smith begins "Carlson's Raid" with the events of Sunday, December 7, 1941 at Pearl Harbor. The author also gives a brief biography of Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, a key player in the Raider story. James Roosevelt, FDR's son and Carlson's battalion executive officer, and of course the President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt, were the reason that Carlson wound up with one of the two Raider battalions. The Marine Corps was bitterly opposed to forming any "special force" because the official dogma was that every Marine was special. (Note: in 2005 the United States Marine Corps finally recanted this long-held doctrine and established a presence in the Special Operations Command--SOCOM. "Carlson's Raid" was published prior to this event and only time will tell how this radical change will affect the Corps.)
The bulk of the book is about the Makin raid from preparation to aftermath. One chapter is devoted to Carlson's Raiders' Long Patrol and another is devoted to the disbanding of the Raiders. I like bibliographies and indexes because they allow me to go to other sources and quickly find things.
I came to the conclusion that the Makin Raid was a defeat for Headquarters Marine Corps because even after being organized and equipped specifically for raiding and undergoing extensive (for the time) training the raid was all but a disaster. This was an HQMC defeat because it proved that "ordinary Marine line companies" were NOT capable of conducting Makin Island type operations. The Raider companies themselves needed refinement in training and better equipment. Radios and outboard motors were not up to the task of keeping raid elements in touch with the mother ship or each other, and of crashing through the surf line. No wonder Raider units were "squandered" as line infantry on Guadalcanal and then disbanded! The Para-Marines were never used as parachute infantry, either.
I think that "Carlson's Raid" is great history because it shows how fouled up war fighting can be. Smith leaves me with more questions than answers, which is a good thing. There are gaps in the record on the Makin Island operation. George W. Smith put a lot of information into "Carlson's Raid" because military operations do not happen in a clinical, isolated setting. FDR's "interference" in "military operations" and the Hollywood connection (the movie "Gung Ho!") all cloud the issue of success and failure. In military operations the difference between defeat and victory is often merely a matter of opinion.
Gung Ho!.......2001-09-08
George W. Smith has done a superb job of chronicling WW2's 2d Marine Raider Battalion. He tells the true story of the exploits of the Raiders, and details the life story of their leader, Evans F. Carlson.
Far from being a dry account of the facts of the 1942 raid on Makin Atoll in the Pacific, this tale recounts the events leading up the the actual skirmish with the Japanese, and tells the story of the battle in riveting first person detail. From their disorganized entry onto the island, their successful assault on the waiting Japanese forces, and their almost disastrous exodus through fierce ocean waves back to the submarines, the reader is captivated by their unique tale. For the first time, the conclusion to the attack is laid out in all its controversial detail. It is a highly compelling story that has waited 59 years to be told in its entirety.
Kudos to Mr. Smith for an exceptional, factual account of a significant World War II battle, one that captures the attention of history buffs and laypeople alike.
Shakin' Makin With Peatross Too.......2001-09-06
I enjoyed the book, however, a lot more can be learned of the Raiders by reading Oscar Peatross' book Bless 'em All, which is out of print, unfortunately; however, excerpts are available at one of the Marine Raider websites. The chapter on The Long Patrol at the end of the book, is short and somewhat superficial, and a story truly deserving of a novel in itself. Imagine being on patrol and living in the jungles of Guadalcanal for 32 days. Ahoy Raiders! We are truly indebted and thank you for your sacrifices.
Marine Raiders Takin' Makin.......2001-08-23
This is a fairly brief(233pp.) account of the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion's assault on a Japanese held Central Pacific island in the first year of the Pacific War during WWII. The author outlines the formation of elite Marine commando units and the intra-service squabbling it entailed. He then takes you into the early career of the leader, Evans Carlson, and its influence on his philosophy of covert operations such as these units were tasked with. He later follows with a descriptive narrative of the preparation, training, and execution of the mission of invading Butaritari Island in Makin Atoll in the Gilbert Islands. I applaud his use of oral interviews of survivors of the operation. My only critique was the ineffective sprinkling of humorous events throughout which did not blend well with the flow of the story. Overall I highly recommend this book to those interested in learning more about one of the elite Marine units of WWII.

Book Description
This latest addition to the English Episcopal Acta series brings together for the first time edited versions of more than 170 charters in the names of the four bishops who held the see of Ely (comprising historic Cambridgeshire) from its foundation in 1109 to 1197. These four bishops - Hervey, Nigel, Geoffrey Ridel and William de Longchamp - were amongst the most distinguished in twelfth-century England and their charters bear on many aspects of the social, economic, legal, ecclesiastical and monastic history of this period. The charters especially illustrate the position of the bishops as feudal lords, and their complex and often controversial relations with the monks of their cathedral. Of the four bishops in office before 1197, two held important secular office alongside their episcopal appointments, most notably William de Longchamp, justiciar and effective regent of England while King Richard I was absent during the Third Crusade. Acta issued in connexion with these secular offices are included in the volume, and make an important contribution to the understanding of the delegation of royal power and secular government far beyond the diocese of Ely. An extensive introduction contextualises the acta in the development of the cathedral church and the diocese of Ely.

Book Description
“Nothing in the world prepares you for an eagle leaping to your arm,” says the author of this moving memoir. When Brenda Cox found Ichabod, a ten-week-old female bald eagle blown out of her nest, a profound relationship began. Cox experienced many exhilarating moments and more than a few close calls during the time she trained the bird for falconry and forged a deep bond with one of the most beautiful and elusive creatures. This story recalls that unusual relationship which spanned eight years.
Customer Reviews:
A Remarkable Relationship between a Lady and an Eagle.......2004-07-30
Conversations With an Eagle, is the fascinating story of author, Brenda Cox's unique and personally transformative quest to train a Bald Eagle named Ichabod, which was brought into the Orphaned Wildlife Center in British Columbia, Western Canada.
Brenda's single-minded dedication to Ichabod extended over a period of several years, during which time she was able to accomplish something that no human had ever done before...She adapted techniques developed over the centuries in the ancient art of Falconry, becoming the first person ever to train an Eagle to perch on her gauntlet and respond to the facconer's commands.
This is indeed a fascinating tale, which should appeal to anyone interested in birds of prey, and the complex interactions between humans and the Natural World. In her first literary creation, author Brenda Cox reaches out to the hearts of her readers with an honest and forthright style. The spirit of her beautiful story is perhaps best expressed in the quote by Loren Eisley, with which she opens her book: There are people who do not know who they are until they watch their reflection in an eye other than human. Ellott Maynard, Ph.D., President, Arcos Cielos Research Center.
For anyone with an interest in aviary wildlife.......2002-09-14
Conversations With An Eagle: The Story Of A Remarkable Friendship is the personal account of Brenda Cox, a woman whose unique bonding experience with a bald eagle was to affect the course of both their lives. Brenda first met the magnificent raptor when it was twelve weeks old, and cared for it at the wildlife rehabilitation center where she volunteered her time. Brenda trained the bald eagle with falconry techniques (something that few human beings have ever had the privilege to attempt, let alone succeed), and suffered deep loss when her raptor friend unexpectedly perished after moving to a private aviary. Conversations With An Eagle is an amazing, memorable true story, and highly recommended reading for anyone with an interest in aviary wildlife or unusual life stories.
Book Description
Greek art usually brings to mind magnificent statues and gleaming temples. However, the richness and variety of Greek designs, as represented in the drawings of this book, remind us of the many other extraordinary achievements of the Greeks. Borders framing vase paintings, friezes carved on buildings, emblems placed on coins and other ornaments are exquisitely designed. Patterns of plant forms are elegantly varied, meanders expanded, elaborated or curtailed, fish, fowl, mammals or monsters are organised into decorative designs. Curved or angular, geometrical or organic, the most successful formulations are used on a range of different scales from tiny designs painted on vases to large mouldings on architecture. A clear and concise introduction outlines the historical background to the designs, and touches on the many themes represented in vase painting, sculpture, architecture and coinage amongst others. Useful information is provided in the notes on the materials, techniques and sources of each design illustrated. This book is a wonderful visual reference to the myriad of Greek designs and sure to inspire and delight.
