Beauty AND brains.......2003-06-19
Decor books suffer from a terrible split personality problem. If they have great photos and idea rooms, they often have text that is trifling and badly written, usually with no good advice either. Or, they have good design tips and inspiration, but it's packed into a bad-looking, text-book like tome.
This book is neither. It's a rarity-well-written, full of good ideas, and illustrated with lovely photos. From a wall of common keys that somehow look like art to an inspired table of topiaries, these are easy-to-emulate, high-impact designs.
A section of how-to-tips at the back (a rod with which to hang a kimono on the wall, easy shelving projects) also makes this book a keeper.
Highly recommended for collecters, as well, since The Art of Display has plenty of ideas for dispaying collectibles without cluttering up a space.

Book Description
Witness Iraq: A War Journal, February April 2003 presents compelling, provocative images of the war, as seen through the eyes of world-renowned independent and embedded photojournalists belonging to the most well-known and respected photo agencies. The books begins with the assassination attempt of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein and continues through the massive roll out of tanks and troops in the desert, and on to the fight of the Kurds in the North, and finally culminating in the fall of Baghdad. Witness the desperation of Iraqi soldiers as they attempt to surrender. Witness an unpublished and more telling view of the jubilation in Baghdad when the famed huge statue of Saddam Hussein is toppled. Feel the empathy of a US soldier as he cradles an injured Iraqi child. Although this has become history's most photographed military conflict, most photographs in this book have not been seen before. These images take you inside the war and show the courage, tragedy, humor, and compassion, portraying the chaos of conflict as well as the respect and empathy for human life. Through these images, you will witness not only the horrors of war but also the triumph of the human spirit.
Customer Reviews:
Dont know what they are talking about!!!.......2005-08-24
This book is very good. It is not afraid to show you the hell of war. Like in one of the pictures it showes a Marine shot and dying. I recommend this book and do not know what the peeps above me were talking about!!
Shock and awe in Iraq........2005-06-19
This is a picture book on the war that toppled Saddam from his dictatorship. As one of the previous reviewers have already noted, it is a coffee table book. The pictures are great as they show the reality of war--innocent civilians including children being wounded and killed. Not surprisely, I found the book to be pro war and anti Saddam. The period detailed was the initial invasion and the aftermath. People were generally pro-American and welcomed the Americans, and this shows in the pictures of U.S. soldiers being kissed. Much has changed since this book has been published. At present, it does not demonstrate the true feeling of Iraqis or Americans about the war now.
There is not much to read in this book. There are a few slivers of info, but overall a person will not gain any great insight into why the war was fought. The pictures are great, and this would be the only reason to purchase the book.
NOT SO ENGAGING.......2004-07-20
there isn't much good to say about this book .. the quality of the images is poor abd the narrative is non existent. There are far better books out there addressing the war in iraq. This one just misses.
Not pretty, somewhat delusional..........2003-08-31
This coffeetable book contains graphic images of the Iraq war.
Its visually engaging, I will give it credit for that.
Its also a clear warning to any country that would like to
threaten the USA.
Where it goes wrong is that it paints an overly rosy picture of the aftermath of the war. This is war the way Bush the Junior and Rumsfeld would like you to see it. The book shows grateful Iraqis hugging and kissing US soldiers. I think we know by now that not everybody in Iraq is that happy to see us there and we face a potential Vietnam-like quagmire unless we can assemble a coalition of nations to secure and pacify Iraq.
The book graphically shows the results of Saddam's megalomania and his total disregard for his own people. Too bad we only have to look to North Korea to find another despot all too eager to throw his own people "under the bus".
Plagarisim.......2003-08-13
While many of the photographs in this book are excellent, I need to point out the the acompanying text with this book has been mostly plagarized from various on-line web diaries. It's likely that the photographers who contributed to this book would probably scream bloody murder if someone lifted thier work from the internet and published it for profit under someone elses name. It's a shame that they can't show the same respect to a text author who's work happens to appear on-line. Just because something is written on a web page instead of in a newspaper or magazine does not mean that the work is in the public domain. Shame on the editor & publisher of this book. I hope they get sued for a zillion dollars.

Customer Reviews:
Corporate law guide?.......2005-09-14
I ordered the book seeing that it was a guide to law firms(top 100).
What it is geared towards is corporate law, NOT a guide for simple peons like me that need good attorneys from time to time.
The title of the book does miss-lead.
A good book for corporate I must say.
Not useless, but not much more than useless.......2005-06-23
After having clerked for a judge for a year after law school, I began researching future job options. But from an outsider's view, all the big firms seem the same. They all pay about the same, and they all demand extreme hours. I was vaguely aware that certain firms had more "prestige," but had little idea why that should matter to me.
Naturally I turned to Vault. But it didn't help. Even after reading about a dozen descriptions, they all still sounded exactly the same. Every entry states that the firm is highly selective in who it hires, and has such and such clients, litigated such and such recent case. Then there's a quote by one associate who says the firm is great and one that says it sucks.
Things I would like to have seen but did not:
1) partner to associate ratio
2) attrition rates
3) percentage of first years that make partner
4) how frequently they hire laterals or judicial clerks
5) what associates of this firm do when they don't make partner -- i.e., realistic information concerning what will actually happen to me if I get a job here
I suppose that given the importance of choosing a law firm, any small amount of information helps, so you should buy this book. But don't expect any real insights.
This Book is a TTT.......2004-06-24
Vault is just one of many entities that profits from the insecurities of law and pre-law students.
Some info one might want from a guide to law firms:
1) Average hours worked.
2) Average length of time to partnership, and other related info.
3) How far into the class a firm will recruit at your law school.
4) What makes firm A different from firm B.
5) Et cetera.
None of this info, unfortunately, is contained in this book. Every description is essentially the same, and equally useless: Firm X worked on the following big cases... Associate 1 says the work is great. But, adds associate 2, the hours can sometimes get to you and the partners aren't always friendly. Blah, blah, blah.
Save your money. This book is a waste of paper.
Order it from Vault.com.......2002-08-20
This is a great book, but if you need it right away and don't want to pay a special handling fee order it directly from Vault.com. The eBook version is also available there as well as the new 2003 edition that is not available yet in bookstores.
a superb book and the only one of its kind.......2001-09-11
i don't normally write reviews as i'm too busy slaving away as a lawyer...but i must add my $.02 this vault guidebook is astonishingly good. my fellow lawyers and i can't get enough of "The Buzz" which tells what lawyers are saying about various firms. this is the ONLY resource that tells it like it is in the arduous, sometimes rewarding, sometimes nauseating world of BIGLAW

Customer Reviews:
A Solid Effort!.......2001-04-24
Dr. Deborah Bright describes an eight-step program for gaining more control over your life, both every day and in the long term. She discusses becoming more aware of your level of control, and assuming more responsibility for your own direction. She advocates being a "pro-achiever," with a positive "take control" attitude. Although the book's strength resides in stories drawn from personal interviews, the basic principles are very familiar in success and self-help literature. Dr. Bright coins some new phrases, but her advice is not new. However, the self-help audience always seems to welcome a new look at these ideas, restated and repackaged in different ways. We [...] recommend this book to those who want an extra boost in exerting control over their lives, to readers who like strong personal anecdotes, and to beleaguered junior execs who have not yet consulted a basic life management text.
A winner.......1999-03-14
This book is readable and full of practical advice that has really helped me understand how to better manage time and stress. I strongly recommend the book.
a great book which helped me with my diet and work problems.......1998-11-30
Easy to read and really helpful in getting me on track to achieving what I want like losing weight and getting a promotion.

Book Description
B> Childhood Motor Speech Disabilities provides a comprehensive, up-to-date outline of all childhood motor speech disabilities.
This book also gives readers a complete picture of the major nervous system disorders associated with dysarthria, presents the five types of childhood dysarthria, and clarifies the classification of childhood dysarthria. The eight years since the publication of the first edition have seen an increased interest in the nature and habilitation of the controversial disorder known as developmental verbal dyspraxia (DVD). The heated controversy and intense interest in DVD is questioned and put in perspective by pointing out that it is a low frequency pediatric phonological disorder compared to the widespread phonological delay of unknown origin. Childhood Motor Speech Disability also reviews and critiques a three-part research study by JSHR and two major textbooks that have been published since the first edition.
For readers interested in childhood motor speech disabilities.

Book Description
An explosive story of colonial life, nineteenth-century science, and the mysteries of sexuality, Rachel Holmes's
Scanty Particulars transcends the genre of biography. Through prodigious research and vivid storytelling, Holmes brings to life one of the most enigmatic figures of his time.
In the 1820s, Dr. James Barry burst into the English establishment from nowhere. He landed in Cape Town and became the leading military doctor in the South African colony, working tirelessly to improve the conditions of free and enslaved women, lepers, and the indigent. Barry's further travels included postings to the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and Canada. In his career, he collided with some of the leading figures of the age, and his exploits were regarded with fascination by Mark Twain and Charles Dickens.
Barry was a flamboyant bon vivant: fashionably dressed, flirtatious, and always accompanied by a poodle. Wherever he went, he sparked gossip, made enemies, and inspired relentless curiosity about his identity--curiosity that erupted into international scandal upon Barry's death, when his maidservant discovered the truth about this brilliant but mysterious icon of the Victorian age.
Customer Reviews:
Dandies!!!.......2003-12-16
Nothing like a good "dandy" scandal to heat one's blood!!!!
A Dandy Medical Reformer with a Secret.......2003-02-18
With the attention that we pay these days to sexual issues, and sexual inclinations, and with the increasing realization that there are anatomical and psychological gradations in the spectrum between strictly male and strictly female, it was a sure thing that someone would be retelling the story of Dr. James Barry, one of the truly unique characters of the Victorian era. Rachel Holmes has done so in _Scanty Particulars: The Scandalous Life and Astonishing Secret of Queen Victoria's Most Eminent Military Doctor_ (Random House). Barry's story would have been worth retelling anyway; he was a crusading medical reformer who insisted on novel ideas about health and the running of hospitals that we now take for granted. He made plenty of friends and enemies, many highly placed, and no one seems to have known his secret when he died, although there were those who came out afterwards to say they had known all along. Holmes hints at it throughout her fully researched biography, but does not reveal it until after she has told all that can be known of Barry's eventful life; there will be no explicit spoiler in this review.
Barry was born about 1790 in Edinburgh, the "about" being necessary because his origins are murky and part of his secret. He was a precocious medical student at the University of Edinburgh, which was then at the height of its international prestige for its practical and academic study of diseases. He graduated from the university in 1812, and then served his apprenticeship in London. He was a fashionable dandy, dying his hair red, sporting the longest dress sword he could find, and wearing boots with the highest heels. He was a flirt with all the ladies, and he never seems to have courted any of them. He never married. He was posted as an army doctor in a series of far-flung outposts of the British Empire. He eventually became a medical inspector, with the power to report on the treatment of prisoners and lepers; he refused to accept the hellish accommodations offered such outcasts and would not back down in his reports. His reforms included an insistence on fresh air, good diet (he advocated vegetables especially, as he was a vegetarian), and cleanliness. He extended his protection to slaves, prostitutes, children, and the mentally ill. Holmes says that he was "a radical and progressive modernizer in an age of quacks and mountebanks."
In 1865, afflicted by diseases he had himself picked up during his long battles against them, he died in retirement in England. His tutors before him had decreed that their bodies be given up for autopsy and dissection, and Barry would have been expected to have done the same. However, he repeatedly had insisted that he simply be wrapped in whatever sheets he died upon and buried with no ceremony. (A maidservant, however, saw the body, and her report led to sensational, and naturally erroneous, claims in the press.) He had also been reluctant to be examined by any medical men, and had been fussy about being seen while dressing. Holmes's findings on the truth about Barry are consistent with his life devoted to science and anatomy. There will be no sure answers to the sexual riddle Barry poses, Holmes admits, but her speculations based on Barry's writings, especially his medical writings, are satisfying. _Scanty Particulars_ gives an eventual answer to the puzzle of Barry's "astonishing secret," but even without this key, it is an entertaining biography that includes fascinating details of colony life and of medical practice of the time.

Book Description
Six million-- a number impossible to visualize. Six million Jews were killed in Europe between the years 1933 and 1945. What can that number mean to us today? We can that number mean to us today? We are told never to forget the Holocaust, but how can we remember something so incomprehensible?
We can think, not of the numbers, the statistics, but of the people. For the families torn apart, watching mothers, fathers, children disappear or be slaughtered, the numbers were agonizingly comprehensible. One. Two. Three. Often more. Here are the stories of thode people, recorded in letters and diaries, and in the memories of those who survived. Seen through their eyes, the horror becomes real. We cannot deny it--and we can never forget.
`Based on diaries, letters, songs, and history books, a moving account of Jewish suffering in Nazi Germany before and during World War II.' Now that youngsters are acquainted with the horrors of slavery, they are more prepared to consider the questions the Holocaust raises for us today.' Customer Reviews:
YOU Will Never Forget.......2007-03-05
This is a true story of hate and ignorance, prejudice and misery that cost many millions of lives. Within a period of seven years six million Jews were starved to death, shot or gassed. It is a fearful and inhuman story--mostly heart-breaking, but with inspiring accounts, too, from the survivors and of the dead, of bravery and resistance. You'll never forget the Jews of the holocaust. (Suitable for junior high and up.)
wonderful, accesible history for young adults!.......2000-04-27
Meltzer writes the story of the Holocaust from an interesting viewpoint. Becuse he is a young 15 year old American Jew, watching the events of the war from afar, he brings a passion to the delivery of the historical information that makes it more engaging and powerful. The organization of the book into chapters according to chronology makes it easy to read as a whole, or a reader can use it to research a particular aspect of the Holocaust. As a teacher of middle schoolers, books that are so accessible and interesting are hard to find. I would recommend any reader interested in the subject to start here- you won't find much better!

Customer Reviews:
As Told To A Bird.......2005-06-01
Whitney Dough is a cool writer and his book, The Hymn Writers, is *the* reference book if you're ever interested in looking up the bare facts about the lives and works of the male and female writers of your favorite church hymns. They were a varied lot and quite talented, with more quirks than you'd expect! ANDY is even more upfront about its eccentricity. In the Bible there are not very many crows, whereas there are ravens galore, perhaps because the weather conditions of the Middle East prevented crows from thriving whereas it was good for ravens? Most of the time you find "crow" in the Bible, it's as a verb: for example, "Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The `rooster' shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice."
Whitney Dough is a religious man and the story of his life with Andy is an amusing one, for all its sadness. There's something about living with a bird that makes you seem kooky to others, but those of us who have had this experience from the inside know that there's something sacred about it. Not for nothing is the Holy Father continually compared to a pet owner, nor we the sinners a flock of birds. Remember Bede's story of human life as a bird darting into one window of a lighted house, on a dark night, then flying back out again into the darkness?
I don't know why the other reviewer gave this book only a few stars; maybe because it was too personal and revealing, and not enough ornithology. But there are many books about crow life, and hardly any about spending two decades of one's life with one, and so this is a cherishable book in which you will find tools and tips for appreciating your own pet in (and finding your spiritual side as well).
Not enough crow information, mostly personal observances.......1999-07-06
This book wasn't what I expected. 24 years of living with a crow should amount to much more interesting experiences than a handful of personal observances of how this crow felt and how it schemed, which seemed too one-sided.
