The Pragmatist Imagination. Thinking about Things in the Making
Manufacturer: Princeton Architectural Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1568982879 |
Book Description
What would it mean today to think or to imagine, to design or to construct, in relation not to "things made" but to "things in the making"? This question, first posed by the philosopher William James, was the point of departure for "The Pragmatist Imagination." The volume brings together position statements, theoretical speculations, and critical commentary by 33 leading thinkers and makers from over a dozen disciplines. Based on the proceedings of an international workshop held at Columbia University under the auspices of the Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture in spring 2000, a preamble to the much-ballyhooed conference at the Museum of Modern Art in November, 2000, the contributions traverse a set of burning questions about the future, ranging from the relationship between art and experience to the impact of new technologies on human consciousness, from transformations in everyday life to problems of public space, and from the destiny of the nation-state to emergent forms of transnationalism. The authors include Stanley Aronowitz, Marshall Berman, Casey Nelson Blake, Sandra Buckley, Teresa Caldeira, Jean-Louis Cohen, Jonathan Crary, Rosalyn Deutsche, Kenneth Frampton, Gerald E. Frug, Peter Galison, Elizabeth Grosz, Andreas Huyssen, Isaac Joseph, David Lapoujade, Reinhold Martin, Brian Massumi, Mary McLeod, Paul Miller a.k.a. DJ Spooky, Chantal Mouffe, Joan Ockman, John Rajchman, Martha Rosler, Hashim Sarkis, Saskia Sassen, Sandhya Shukla, Richard Shusterman, Abdoumaliq Simone, Anders Stephanson, Bernard Tschumi, Nadia Urbinati, Mabel Wilson, and Gwendolyn Wright. The book includes an introduction by John Rajchman and an afterword by Casey Nelson Blake.

The Little iDVD Book, Second Edition
Bob LeVitus Manufacturer: Peachpit Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0321197747 |
Book Description
Learning a new technology can be an intimidating prospect, even when the tools are as straightforward as Apple's iDVD 3. If you've been hesitating to take the step into DVD production, wait no more—there's no gentler approach than that offered by Peachpit's best-selling "Little" book series and noted Mac columnist Bob ("Dr. Mac") LeVitus. In The Little iDVD Book, Second Edition Bob helps you conquer your fears and get down to the exciting business of creating interactive DVDs with iDVD 3 and Apple's tightly integrated iLife applications, iTunes, iPhoto, and iMovie. Through jargon-free language and step-by-step instructions, he shows you how to share movies, music, and pictures on DVD. In these pages, you'll learn about all the features that are new to this version of iDVD, including the dozens of new menu "themes"; support for iMovie chapter markers, which lets viewers skip quickly from scene to scene; automatic creation of Scene Selection menus; as well as how you can access iTunes and iPhoto libraries directly from within iDVD. And if you're interested in using iDVD software to archive or share other data (such as AppleWorks, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel files), you'll find that info as well.Customer Reviews:
Great intorduction to iDVD.......2003-09-08
Chris Seibold MyMac.com Book review.......2003-02-12
iDVD is not an overly complicated program, it's (as are most of the iApps) fairly straightforward. iDVD is basically getting media in, record media onto disk, thanks for using Macintosh. You can do it without an instruction book, which is nice because Apple includes no manual for iDVD. Still, just because a program is fairly easy to use doesn't make the program fairly limited or, trust me, so easy to use you couldn't do with a bit of instruction and a little help. This is where The Little iDVD Book comes in, your most puzzling questions are answered with a quick trip to the index and hints for making a stylish DVD abound. The Little iDVD Book is easy reading and you won't regret the investment of time spent reading The Little iDVD Book or the 19.99 price of admission. Add to that that no matter incredibly lame your iMovie actually is if you follow Bob Levitus' advice it will at least have a very nice wrapper.
The Little iDVD Book is not perfect. The title does contain the word "little" and you would think that would entail ripping anything out of The Little iDVD Book not directly pertaining to DVD creation. Alas and alack this is not the case in Bob Levitus' pamphlet about DVD creation. Bob Levitus includes a goodly amount of iMovie tips, a fine idea but again I expect the word "little to actually mean something. This actually seems to be a failing of a great number of instructional books since iMovie was introduced, heck you can't pick up a book on COBOL programming without finding an admonition to create a storyboard of your movie before filming somewhere between the covers. The iMovie tips, while solid, are just as out of place in The Little iDVD Book as they are in the fictionalized COBOL book. My other complaint is purely superficial, Bob Levitus seems to love pictures of himself playing the guitar as much as Bruce Springsteen loves singing about cars. Hence every photo is of Bob Levitus in an OS X t-shirt strumming some conglomeration of wood and metal that I bet has a name (probably Rosabelle). I would've appreciated a little more variety in the visuals but this in no way detracts from the quality of the text.
Those small complaints aside The Little iDVD Book achieves that rarest of all feats for the consumer level instructional book: The Little iDVD Book is actually fun to read. Bob Levitus has a light touch and keeps a subtle amount of humor running throughout The Little iDVD Book's 189 pages. While being entertaining is not the bailiwick of most informative tomes (when's the last time you guffawed while perusing the Encyclopedia Britannica?) it adds to the readability of The Little iDVD Book thus ensuring that the reader will likely pick up more useful info from The Little iDVD Book than the large majority of instructional books I've had the pleasure/chore of reading.
Bottom line: If you're going to be using iDVD buy this book....
Not a technical Manual, an easy read that is a quick study.......2003-01-13

Kids at Work: The Value of Employer-Sponsored On-Site Child Care Centers
Rachel Connelly , Deborah S. Degraff , and Rachel A. Willis Manufacturer: W. E. Upjohn Institute ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0880993049 |
Book Description
Because of a variety of social and economic factors, including welfare reform and the Earned Income Tax Credit, a growing number of women found it necessary to enter the labor force during the past 25 years. This includes a dramatic increase in the labor force participation rate of mothers with young children. With this trend predicted to continue for the next two decades, parents and policymakers must ask themselves, "Who will take care of the children when the inevitable work/family conflicts arise?"This book examines one growing response to this dilemma. In Kids at Work: The Value of Employer-Sponsored On-Site Child Care Centers, Rachel Connelly, Deborah S. DeGraff, and Rachel A. Willis chronicle the trends in the growth in on-site child care programs and perform analyses that shed light on the value of employer-sponsored child care (ESCC) to employees. The authors note that employees may not be the only ones to benefit. Employers may be able to gain wage savings for the firm.
The authors employ two approaches in this study to seek answers to key questions concerning the benefits of ESCC including 1) Why do some firms choose to offer ESCC while most do not? 2) What is the value to the firm offering ESCC? and 3) What is the value to employees of a firm offering ESCC?
The first approach they use is an empirical study based on an analysis of three firms in the same industry. Two of those firms offer ESCC and the third does not. The primary contribution of this effort is to analyze the value of ESCC to the employee. The second approach to estimating employee valuation of ESCC uses a contingent valuation technique for eliciting the worth of the benefit directly from employees. Both approaches broaden our understanding of the benefit of ESCC to employees and, therefore, to the employer as part of a compensation package. Both approaches lead to the conclusion that employees derive substantial benefits from on-site centers beyond what they would receive from a community-based center, and that the benefits from ESCC accrue to other employees besides users of the on-site center. This leads the authors to conclude that "given the difficulty firms have in assessing the value of ESCC, we believe our strategy makes an important contribution in providing an example that any medium-sized or large firm could follow to assess the potential value of ESCC to its employees."
Connelly, DeGraff, and Willis also address the question of whether government should play a role in the decision of firms to offer ESCC as a benefit, first by reviewing current policy on child care, then by presenting several economic factors that could influence the government's decision to play such a role. Overall, the findings presented in this study will be of interest to human resources managers considering an on-site center and to policymakers evaluating possible approaches to helping parents cope with child care expenses.

A travesty of justice for U.S. soldiers................2003-03-12
Painstaking attention has been given and recorded to remove anyone's doubts of this books authenticity. The authors list a staggering record of POW's forever lost to our enemies, the names of prison camps and gulags where they were held, intricate dates and timelines of events, and eyewitness accounts of vital information pertaining to U.S. soldiers forgotten by our govenment.
In the years following World War II, the Korean war, and Vietnam, the actions by our govenment to conceal data concerning our POW's and it's campaigns to silence anyone investigating the issue is absolutely apalling. This book will define for the reader the gross misuses of power, illegal tactics to manipulate and humiliate citizens seeking honest answers, and the use of outright threats and intimidation to bury the subject forever.
Great credit is due to the authors of this book for their courage and perseverance to expose the plight of our lost U.S. servicemen. This book is very highly recommended to everyone who would like an untainted and factual look into the heartbreaking saga of missing U.S. soldiers.
Readers may also be interested in "Kiss the Boys Goodbye: How the United States betrayed its own POW's in Vietnam" by Monica Jensen-Stevenson and William Stevenson. Excellent source material here that reiterates much information found in Soldiers of Misfortune.
