Focusing on the restoration of movie theaters in Atlanta, Biloxi, Birmingham, Durham, Memphis, and Tampa, Janna Jones provides a record of the architectural history and preservation of the opulent urban picture palace. Reflecting our fascination with the past, she re-creates the magic of the early years of theaters throughout the southern United States, their demise in the mid-20th century, and their renaissance in the 1970s as the preservation movement swept across the country.

From the 1920s through the 1950s, the magnificent movie theaters of the South beckoned to millions of urban patrons. By the 1960s, however, many downtown districts had experienced profound cultural and economic crises and the wrecking ball destroyed scores of the grand old structures. Others barely survived by showing pornographic or racially exploitative movies. Those remaining today are often a critical component of downtown revitalization.

Jones discusses attempts to save, restore, and reuse the movie houses. She explores how and why people attempt to resurrect the past and reveals the complex layers of cultural memory. Based on her interviews with preservationists, she offers a cultural analysis of architectural preservation in the late 20th century by examining the practices, philosophies, and politics of preservation today, shedding light on the ways that nostalgia often guides--and misguides--their work.

Illustrated with black-and-white photos that evoke an era of glamour and fantasy and utilizing first-hand accounts from past and present employees and patrons of the theaters, this book is the first to detail both the decline and the revival of the urban picture palace.

A fine read.......2007-10-02

I found Jones's book to be informative and engaging from the start. While others find Jones's approach of only focusing on 5 theaters a disservice to the subject area, I find her method of focusing on distinct southern regions a great way to show the diverse economic and social lines that criss-cross throughout the South. The history of Southern movie palaces itself is quite broad; it covers nearly a century of film history, Old South/New South history, suburbanization after World War II, Civil Rights and downtown revitalization - just to name a few topics. Jones narrows her focus to five theaters and gives these topics a general overview helping the reader to understand the many facets that make up the history of the Southern movie palace. This book is by no means meant to be an end-all-be-all single source of information for the history of these culturally significant buildings. Jones is one of the handful of authors analyzing this topic and her work will only compliment the future study of the history of Southern movie palaces. I found the work to be informative, heartening (in her discussion of her love for the Tampa Theater) and a good addition to the historiography of this very important, cultural significant topic.

College Dissertation?.......2007-01-09

How do you make the history of the rise, fall and resurrection of southern movie palaces dull? You limit yourself to five theaters, minimize the history of the theaters, focus on the civil rights movement, provide few photos and none in color and make the text as dry as possible. I should have known from the low price that this was going to be a waste of my money--and it was. A great topic wasted by a startlingly dull approach. Hopefully, someone else will tackle the theme.

An enlightening book.......2002-11-22

This book is an accessible guide to labor law history in America. The careful analysis of the groundbreaking NLRB and Supreme Court Cases guides the reader through the legal developments in labor law, while explaining the signifigance of each developement in a practical way. Anyone who is involved in a union or is interested in labor managment relations would benefit greatly from reading this book.

Tara Revisited is an only marginally convincing portrait of the "real" southern woman. Clinton successfully debunks the myth of the Old South, yet fails to put in its place a convincing and thorough discussion of the real lives of these women.

Clinton, in refuting the popular myth of the "southern belle," does put up her own model for the southern lady. But this model depends little on how these women actually lived and what they really though; rather she consistently insists on painting women in an overly noble and (still) idealized way.

If you are looking for a good history and examination of women during the American Civil War, try "Mothers of Invention" by Drew Gilpin Faust. It is immensely more satisfying than Clinton's depiction.

Factual Alternative to a Myth.......1999-10-20

Southerners carry a chip on their shoulder when it comes to the Lost Cause, so any book which attempts to set the record straight is an exercise in masochism, certain to be fired upon by those weened on Plantation Mythology. Clinton investigates the development of the "Tara Mystique", that belief that plantation life consisted of happy slaves working for the love of the masters and mistresses. She both dispels this legend and defends the character of Southern womanhood during the Civil War and afterwards. Those who want their ancestors to be demigods will hate this book. Those who want to demonize Southern forebears will find it too light. Those who are willing to confront history as a record made by human beings will enjoy this book and ask for more.

Disappointing, one sided, laced with Author's own prejudice.......1998-07-30

As a lover and avid reader of history I was VERY disappointed in this book. I found Ms. Clintons opinions and interpretations of the south and southern plantation era one sided, selective, and laced with her own prejudices. Yes, it was a horrible, horrible time for the blacks, whites and our country. Slavery will always be Americas greatest shame, a flaw that most of us struggle to understand and rectify in our human frailty each day, but if Ms. Clinton is to be believed, there was but a handful of humane, caring "white" people residing in the south during this time! Which is Not true! If Ms. Clinton considers herself a true historian (which I do not) and writer of history I feel it is her duty to tell All sides honestly, with equal amounts of pros and cons, and without her own bias slants. To my fellow history buffs I can not reccoment this book and I can honestly say that I will never read another of Ms. Clintons books in the future.

A Connecticut Yankee's views on Southern Life.......1998-07-14

I picked up this book and a bookstore in Georgia, thinking it to be a historical book about the South. I was apalled by her insensitivity to the Southern plantation owner. Though there were cruel plantation owners, there were also the genuinly kind people, who cared for the slaves. My ancestors owned slaves, but the majority of them stayed with our family after the war. I wish that the author would pay more attention to the what the southerners had to go through after the war, with homes burned, and families starved, instead of calling it all "southern myth" which has be made into movies and books and over publicized with Scarlett O'Hara and Mammy to stir the hearts of America's people. For the "southern myth" is no myth at all; it is the true story of thousands of Americans who fought for what they believed in their hearts as right, the protection of their values and way of life.

At minimum, a very interesting read........2005-12-26

I found the text to be quite readable and a lot more interesting than some other books on raptors that I have read. This book, of course, cites many different sources, and with those cites, they are clearly stated that these are the opinions and facts of the authors he is citing from. A good portion of the books I have read regarding raptors, the authors use pictures of wild birds where this book mostly uses pictures of captive birds; I was some what puzzled by this, but all the pictures are clearly marked.

There are many tables and graphs in the book and where some are incomplete there is at least one where I questioned just how accurate the data actually was; I had to keep reminding myself that when I read this book, the opinions of the experts vary; I got the impression that the author was trying to give the reader the impression.

Hawks, Eagles and Falcons of North America: Biology and Natu.......2003-04-24

I was a little disappointed when I received the book. I found several inaccuracies in the text and many of the photos appear to be of captive or mounted birds.

It was an interesting read about the different types of raptors seen in North America.
