Gourds, and more!.......2003-07-21
I first read this book as part of a college course on East-Asian thought as is described through the art and architecture of China. This though is a fansastic book, full of wondrous illustrations and woodcuts. Perfect for those people interested in EastAsian thought, bonsai gardening, sinology/anthropology, an all around intriquing and very beautifull book. Hard to find, but is possibly available direct from the publisher.

Book Description
In Paris between 1909 and 1948, the salons in the Grand Palais near the Champs-Olys es were installed with extraordinary decorative interiors to accommodate automobile and other trade fairs. The splendor of these temporary sets was a direct expression of a gloriously progressive Paris married with the work of the French architect Andr Granet (1881-1974). In 1948, Granet's work was documented in a large-format book, which has long been out of print and is now available again here as a stunning facsimile reprint. D cors Oph mAres contains photographs of Granet's installations and lighting designs, as well as his illuminations for the Eiffel tower and the banks of the Seine. It is completed by outlines and sketches of his daring designs.

Black & White Photography.......2006-04-22
Please be aware that the book contains only black and white photos, NO COLOR photos or diagrams. As I was expecting to see color photos/diagrams, I was disappointed and thus downgraded the book to two stars. But some B/W photo enthusiasts may like the book, esp. for the historical context.

Book Description
Consider the future with less fossil fuel and no new natural or technological energy sources. How can it be peaceful and prosperous? More and more leaders concerned with the global future are warning of the impending crisis as the surge of unsustainable growth exceeds the capability of the earth's resources to support our civilization. But while history records the collapse of countless civilizations, some societies and ecosystems have managed to descend in orderly stages, reducing demands and selecting and saving what is most important.
Although some scientists predict disaster, The Prosperous Way Down shows how our world can still thrive and prosper in a future where we live with less and charts a way for our modern civilization to descend to sustainable levels. The authors make recommendations for a more equitable and cooperative world society, with specific suggestions based upon their evaluations of trends in global population, wealth distribution, energy sources, conservation, urban development, capitalism and international trade, information technology, and education.
This thoughtful and provocative book will force us to confront our assumptions and beliefs about our world's future, which is all too often taken for granted.

Taking the shock out of the future.......2002-03-23
From Enron to the September 11, 2001 disasters, it is apparent things are changing in our world, much as we would like to keep things as they were.
In "The Prosperous Way Down" H.T. Odum does not give us feel-good babble.
Instead, he delivers to us a coherent and timely way to do the hard work of knowing how our world works, the changes that are already upon us, and some of the things we may do to increase our opportunity for security and satisfaction in a world that may be very different from what we know today.
There is a lot of contention about Odum and his eMergy methodology. This is to be expected. Odum brings things together, where others are content to be expert with parts.
The bottom line is that with the intellectual tools Odum lets us discover, we can learn to manage far more complexity than any would normally think possible. He lets us first recognize the problems we have with the signals our society sends out through economic and other circumstances of social behavior. And then the tools he provides let us clean up those signals, so we may make better use of the energy and other resources, the environment, and all the benefits (and problems) inherent in our diverse cultures.
The difficulty in all this is indicated by the fact that there is no Nobel prize for looking at the whole of our world. Those fabulous awards go to those who are very good at knowing parts, with very little idea of how the parts come together.
Instead, there is the very quiet Crafoord Prize for those who try to let us know more about the systems of our world--which of course H.T. Odum and his brother Eugene won back in the early 1980s.

Book Description
Wisconsin accounts for about two percent of the nation's total population, but its contribution to the history of working people and social reform extends far beyond these numbers. In the early years of the twentieth century, Wisconsin became a veritable laboratory for social and political reform, producing such landmark legislation as workers' compensation, unemployment insurance, and other laws that became models for several states and helped shape federal labor policies. The study of the history of labor also began in Wisconsin when University of Wisconsin economics professor John R. Commons started to document the history of work and labor in America.
Workers and Unions in Wisconsin includes nearly one hundred selections covering the period from 1850 to 1990, illustrated by scores of historic photos, most of which have never before been reprinted. Editor Darryl Holter has included accounts of episodes that took place in more than twenty-five cities and towns in Wisconsin, including labor activities at such nationally known companies as Oscar Mayer, Kohler, Case, Allis-Chalmers, and Ray-O-Vac and workers as diverse as dairy farmers and university teaching assistants, lumberjacks and hosiery makers, municipal employees and paper mill workers.
The result is a book that will fascinate and inform anyone interested in American labor history and economics, as well as in the personal stories that are part of any great societal change.

Customer Reviews:
The "best" collection for expecting Dad's and beyond. .......2007-09-07
With its sophisticated "New Yorker" style comics and light hearted, realistic approach. I enjoyed reading these much more than my "What to Expect" books, which I still consider invaluable resources.
I loved how these books covered practical issues, such as college savings and some relationship issues that the Mom geared books don't touch. It supplies advice about weathering Moody Moms and creative ways to offer support. It gives enough relevant information to the Dad to understand and relate to the wife's stages of pregnancy, infant health and development and charts toddlers moods and stages without bogging down with a lot of potentially superfluous detail. These books even have some special "Dad" recipes, like making pretzels in the oven, that are supposed to be fun for Dad and Toddler. (I think that is pretty neat.)
In short these are great books, geared towards Dads, covering some things that the more technical books don't have room for, AND they didn't set off my "sexist" alarms. Let me tell you, my alarms are sensitive. I loved reading these. -The Mom (Oh, and my husband liked them too!)

Book Description
Baby Tips for Dads - Baby's First Year. New dads are often as mystified by their wives after they become mothers as they are by their babies! This book will help any dad adjust to his new role so he can enjoy the experience and be a hero! It humorously expresses a lot of the things new parents think about each other, but won't admit. Mothers will want their husbands to read this book-and it makes a great gift for new dads.

Prefer the GoodFather.......2004-12-27
My brother received this a baby shower gift and it wasn't too bad overall. It had some funny stuff and is better than most
Related Note: His best gift was definitely "The GoodFather" which is a CD-ROM which teaches new dads baby skills through a parody of the GodFather series. It came in a cool box, had an impressive collection of baby lessons, and was hilarious.
I'd give the Baby Tips book a thumbs up, but my money will go to The GoodFather by Dr.MOZ www.drmoz.com any day. That's my 2 cents.
Funny, light.......2004-07-03
This book was so funny, I had many great laughs while reading it, and I've given some as gifts. With a newborn, humor is greatly appreciated. I don't think it's meant to be a serious parenting guide but it is just a really funny book.
For New Dads or Neanderthals??.......2001-06-28
I bought this book for my husband since he and I are adding to our family. It sounded cute and easy to read and as a new Dad I thought it would be a way to include him in the wait for our child. The only thing good about this book is that it is easy to read and can finished in less than 30 minutes. If I had given it to him to read he would have rightfully felt insulted at the authors attempts to be funny as she lambbasted fathers. As an example, page 92's wisdom is 'Never say: "Hey, you delivered the baby early! Can I go to the football game Sunday?"' At least the book offends equally since it makes it clear mothers should be lied to, humored, and handled. Parents can laugh with each other, instead of at each other. Parenting is funny and heartbreaking, but instead of being at war with my husband I would rather be in the trenches with him.

Moving crisply from Abraham Lincoln's inauguration in 1861 to the final Confederate surrenders in 1865, this smart collection of essays provides a neat history of the Civil War. With nearly two dozen noted historians contributing to the volume (it is an all-star roster that includes Thomas Fleming, Geoffrey Perret, and James McPherson), the approach is necessarily idiosyncratic. There's no essay on Pickett's charge, for instance, but there is an interesting discussion of Robert E. Lee's orders at Malvern Hill, which were arguably a forerunner to that fateful action at Gettysburg. The editor, Robert Cowley, has done an excellent job of piecing together a group of essays that stand well on their own.
Between these covers, however, they manage to become more than the sum of their parts--always a difficult goal for anthologies to achieve. Cowley himself is the founding editor of Military History Quarterly and the man behind the acclaimed What If? anthology. Each of the selections included in With My Face to the Enemy has appeared previously in MHQ, and many of them have appeared in book form as well. "Lincoln Takes Charge" by David Herbert Donald is drawn from Donald's biography Lincoln, for instance, and "The Ordeal of General Stone" by Stephen W. Sears appeared in Controversies and Commanders.
John Bowers writes one of the most interesting chapters, on Confederate hero Stonewall Jackson. "Jackson was not a natural leader," writes Bowers. "In fact, Jackson probably had what we now call a learning disability." Yet he became one of the most fearsomely effective generals in American history. "He personified the word indomitable. He would not accept defeat and had a way of coming back, prevailing no matter what was thrown at him.... When the Battle of Cedar Mountain was being lost, bluecoats storming over Stonewall's regiments in a clatter of musket fire, Jackson himself galloped into the maelstrom, drew his sword, and rallied his retreating troops back into the fight.... The tide turned, and Cedar Mountain was won." Filled with such compelling perspectives, With My Face to the Enemy is a worthy addition to any personal library on the Civil War. --John J. Miller
Book Description
Essays on the most vital conflict in our nation's history written by renowned historians and presented by the editor of the acclaimed What If?
With My Face to the Enemy is a provocative and wide-ranging anthology of essays on the Civil War-our nation's defining struggle and the first modern war in history. In thirty-five illuminating essays and one hundred and fifty thousand words, it examines the war from the perspectives critical to its outcome-the larger-than-life personalities of the important players from Lincoln to Lee, and the national strategies and key battle tactics that shaped the four-year-long crisis. Contributors include the leading lights of Civil War scholarship: James M. McPherson, Stephen W. Sears, Gary W. Gallagher, David Herbert Donald, and twenty others.
James M. McPherson's essays ponder three diverse, yet fascinating subjects: Abraham Lincoln's use of language and its role in his victory; Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee's failed Southern strategies; and Ulysses S. Grant's memoirs as a reflection of his superlative generalship. Stephen W. Sears, in four essays, describes the daring flanking maneuvers of Stonewall Jackson at Chancellorsville, and presents the last word on Lee's infamous "lost order," among other topics. Other highlights include David Herbert Donald on Lincoln's early command; Gary W. Gallagher on Lee's record before his ascension as a Southern icon; John Bowers on Chickamauga; Noah Andre Trudeau on the battle of the Wilderness; Thomas Fleming on West Point, and much more.
Customer Reviews:
Audiobook: Six Interesting Essays.......2007-07-23
I listened to this book on audiocassette. I assume that the editor picked six of the best essays from the hardcopy book for the audio version. They are:
Lincoln Takes Charge by David Herbert Donald
Failed Southern Strategies by James M. McPherson
Malvern Hill by Stephen W. Sears
When Lee was Mortal by Gary W. Gallagher
The Rock of Chickamauga: George H. Thomas by John Bowers
Rebel Without a War: The Shenandoah by Robert F. Jones
All of these are worth listening to. Narrator Eric Conger does an excellent job, and of course, the highly-respected authors all conducted thorough research and wrote clearly on interesting topics.
Personally I found the last two to be particularly intriguing because they covered stories that were fairly new to me. For example, George Thomas was a native of Virginia who chose to remain in the U.S. Army after his home state seceded. His family never spoke to him again! His leadership at Chickamauga and elsewhere in Tennessee earned him well-deserved acclaim.
As for the final essay in this version, the CSS Shenandoah fired the last shot of the Civil War basically because the captain and crew did not know that the war had ended until late in the summer of 1865. Their job had been to damage Union commerce by destroying commercial vessels, and this they did. In particular they sunk a number of whaling ships.
Subtitled "Perspectives on the Civil War," the book is suitable for anyone interested in that period of American history and particularly for those who already have some familiarity with the Civil War and would like some fresh ideas and detailed stories.
Collection of Magazine articles is good, but inconsistent.......2004-08-17
Essay collections are hard to review. You always wind up with something you liked, something you didn't, and a few things you were surprised by, either pleasantly or otherwise. This book is no exception: while some of the essays in here are worthwhile, some are less wonderful, or otherwise uneven.
One real difficulty is that there's nothing new here at all: every "essay" in this book was previously published in Military History Quarterly. This means that if you subscribed to that magazine, you'd have all these articles already, and you wouldn't need this book. The only thing you'd get by having this is that Robert Cowley writes an introduction for every piece, but as noted elsewhere, he cribs his intros from the articles themselves, with the result that you almost read a short version of the piece before reading it itself. Some of the articles are also taken from larger books, so that you may wind up reading those twice before getting to this book. And as noted, there are no illustrations, maps, footnotes, index, bibliography, or any of the other stuff that you'd expect in a book like this. It sort of cripples the usefulness of the book, to be honest, for anything other than entertainment.
I've enjoyed stuff Cowley has done elsewhere (the What If? stuff, especially), but he and his publisher need to work on how these books are presented.
A uneven potpourri but enough there to make it worth reading.......2004-05-07
It's pretty much common sense that Anthologies are a real mixed bag but With My Face to the Enemy is more than the average. This compilation has some wonderful stuff and to be honest one or two that I'm surprised got past the editor considering the factual errors they have.
On the good side you have some really first rate pieces. Stephen Sears comes through with some great stuff as usual with 'The Last Word on the Lost Order', 'The Ordeal of General Stone' and 'Malvern Hill'. However these works can be found in his book "Controversies and Commanders" or his book on the Peninsula Campaign.
Still there are other less well known writers in addition to the well known ones like Sears, Gallagher and McPherson, to make this worth picking up. Robert Jones' Rebel Without a War sticks out as exceptional as does John Taylor's 'The Crater'. Also two different articles that cover Col William Oates and Col Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain 'The Antagonists of Little Round Top'I found to be very interesting reads.
On the bad side a few of the article lean a bit towards the dry side and there are some factual errors, especially in Tom Flemming's 'Band of Brothers'. The article makes a number of mistakes such as stating that General Richard Garnett rode in Pickett's Charge because he was to sick with fever to walk. The actual truth however is that Garnett had been kicked by a horse and his leg was still to sore for him to walk. Flemming also repeats the old fable that Grant sent an engraved silver serving set across the battle lines at Petersburg to George and Sally Pickett as a present when their son was born. However this story is widely known to be a fictional creation of Sally Pickett's after the war.
So in the end while a bit uneven, there's enough first rate material to make the book worth it.
Various perspectives........2004-02-19
This book carries a similar format to books that look at the "hows" and "whys" of a battle, but instead follows popular events in the Civil War. Featuring and all-star cast of writers such as Gallagher and Sears, the book covers a variety of topics concerning subjects like Lee, Jackson, Grant, Vicksburg, Forrest at Fort Pillow, Union prisons, Sherman, Sheridan and many others. I have to admit the lack of references was disappointing as at times writer opinion versus fact were questionable. A majority of the chapters did offer interesting insight and tried to look at either popular misconceptions or myths surrounding the subjects. There is over 500 pages of material here that offer the advanced student of the Civil War possible new insight to events. I couldn't recommend this book to novice readers as a majority of the topics seem to be written in the assumption of past reader knowledge.
Fine, but flawed, collection.......2003-05-02
I am greatly torn over whether to give With My Face to the Enemy three or four stars. Four stars ultimately prevails because it seems to me that just about any book about the Civil War is almost by definition worth reading, and there is much in With My Face to the Enemy that will please both Civil War aficionados and those with but a passing interest. Of particular moment are two articles about the Confederate pirate ships (and let's be honest, they *were* pirate ships sans the physical violence) Alabama and Shenandoah, which reveal the genuinely global reach of the conflict. Every article has something to recommend it, even if, like Stephen Sears' essay on Chancellorsville, you've read it all before.
But there are some flaws, too. Most glaring and annoying is the lack of an index. Is there any Civil War student who does not rush to the index first to find references to his (or her) favorite general or battle? No such luck here; you'll have to read the entire book for those brief references to Howard, Hancock, McPherson, et al. Second, the articles lack two of the major selling points of military history magazines - color maps and illustrations. Now, I'm a big boy and I don't *need* pictures with my text, but often the art that accompanies an MHQ article is more powerful than the text. Third, there is a fault that lies with far too many Civil War pieces: biographies of important figures devolving into hagiographies. For too many Civil War biographers their subject can do, and did no, wrong. Crowley himself uses the word "hagiography" in one of his introductions. Whether it's Stonewall or Lee, or Admiral Porter or Sheridan, the lavish praise becomes tiring. And the final gripe to be made is toward Crowley's introductions, which borrow too liberally from the essays, adding nothing yet stealing the thunder of the contributors. (The same complaint can be made of Crowley's introductions to the What If? series.)
These are not much more than petty gripes, however. The Civil War remains a fascinating topic, and With My Face to the Enemy provides a wide range of essays covering many areas of the war. The collection deserves a spot on the bookshelf.

Book Description
Amazing stories of the author's friendship with Spirit, and other tales of crows.
Customer Reviews:
No Way: Not Enough Crow.......2001-05-27
This entertaining 94 page book is mostly about the author with a few snippets about the crow: if you want to learn about crows, in general, skip this book.
This is a book for women.
Ms. Lacy is an excellent author. Her technique and imagination are excellent. She writes visual images that come alive in the reader's mind's eye. This book is an excellent read and it is very entertaining.
This is an author-centric book; this is not the book about a crow or crows it is advertised to be. Ms. Lacy is an author and painter who lives in Canada. She writes about taking walks and inspiration and spirituality and painting and ... oh, yes ... once in awhile she writes about her crow, Spirit, or crows, in general.
Regarding Crows: Ms. Lacy teases and seldom delivers. Ms. Lacy writes at great length about how much she learned from her crow, named Spirit. She writes at great length about the fact that she shared so much with Spirit. She writes at great length about how smart Spirit was. She tantalizes! She entices! She makes you hurry to the next page. You can't wait for these revelations to come forth. But, they don't. She doesn't fulfill her implied-promises of great revelations. Mostly she talks about ... her. She tells you how much she's going to tell you, but, then, in the end, she doesn't.
When Ms. Lacy finally gets around to talking about Spirit, it is anecdotal.
BUT!!! When she quotes the letters she received from other Canadians about their crows, the book is crow-oriented. And, there are some excellent items that I did not know. If you want to learn about crows, the cumulative amount of crow is MAYBE ten pages.
Oddly, there is a short bibliography in the back.
While not-talking about talking about crows, Ms. Lacy cannot resist a political cheap shot. Ms. Lacy takes a swat at US farmers who try to protect their crops from crows and phrases her comments to make US farmers to appear as murderous monsters. If you've ever seen crows destroy an entire corn, peanut, or chicken crop (also known as livelihood or income), you understand the farmer's concern....
For The Love of a Crow.......2001-05-04
"Black Spirit: The Way of the Crow" details one man's experience caring for a crow. The crow, Black Spirit, sustained injuries that prevented him from being able to survive in the wild. If you love crows or have an interest in birds in general, this is the book for you. If you consider the crow to be only a pest, this book may change your view. Crows are highly intelligent creatures who sometimes lend themselves to mischevious endeavours. I love this book because it enabled me to get closer to the essence of the crow. Laurie Lacey's life was touched by the lively and endearing crow and from the experience he learned things about himself and about life. Seems like a rather tall order for a bird. Enlightenment comes to us from the strangest sources, nothing in the universe is immune to it... or above being used as the bearer of the message. Crows have long been the source of myth and legend, and sometimes, they manifest themselves into the fabric of reality. This book can be more than just about a man taking care of a crow if you consider the spiritual element and the role it played in the author's life. In any case, whether you are interested in bird behaviour or like to dwell in the mysterious, I highly recommend this book.
