Book Description

Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's magnificent mountaintop home in Charlottesville, Virginia, has attracted public attention ever since Jefferson's day, when sightseers regularly visited the grounds in hopes of catching a glimpse of the former president. Today, each year more than half a million people from around the world visit Monticello, the only home in America on the United Nations' list of World Heritage Sites that must be protected at all costs.

Thomas Jefferson's Monticello is a superb collection of essays, adorned with beautiful color photography, that showcases this American treasure. Designed by Jefferson himself, Monticello is a model of elegance and symmetry. It is also home to Jefferson's world-class collection of art and porcelain from France, scientific instruments from England, the finest American furniture from Philadelphia and New York, and enduring furnishings made in Monticello's own joinery by enslaved craftsmen. The celebrated gardens and grounds form an experimental yet breathtakingly lovely landscape featuring flowers, fruits, and vegetables of the Old and New Worlds.

Featuring essays by Monticello's scholarly staff, this stunning book explores all aspects of Jefferson's home. A section on the plantation and the enslaved community at Monticello provides a larger context in which to place and understand the house, its activities, and its owner.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Look at a Great Home.......2007-01-09

This work successfully links the many unique qualities of Thomas Jefferson's personality to the unique qualities of the home that he designed and spent most of his life building and rebuilding. All of the intriguing features of this home are covered.
Anyone interested in this remarkable man and his home who is unable to visit Monticello in person should strongly consider this work.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional .......2006-08-03

This is a highly informative, well documented book covering all aspects of the design and building of Thomas Jefferson's home, plus insights into why things were done the way they were done, through Jefferson's own notes, sketches and correspondence. Plus, the photographs are exquisite.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful guide to America's most interesting house.......2003-05-03

One of the clichés about Monticello is that few houses do so good a job revealing the personality of its builder. But clichés get to be such generally because there's truth to them, and that's definitely the case here. If Thomas Jefferson was one of the most interesting figures in American history (and I think that's unquestionably true), then Monticello may well be one of America's most interesting houses. And for this colorful book produced by the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, we are guided through the house and grounds by people who know their stuff.

Specifically, the chapters of this title are written by Monticello's director of restoration, the curator, the director of gardens and grounds, and other experts associated with the Foundation. Large, colorful photos are accompanied by informed commentary and all the requisite history, as well as documentation of the decades of restoration work it has taken to get the house and grounds to its current condition. A book doesn't make up for a visit in person -- if anything, I wished for more photos of the interior, especially of the book room and "cabinet." But for a general overview of the house, grounds, and collection, and an insight into the man himself, this book is hard to beat. I recommend it as a souvenir, as well as a nice companion to a Jefferson biography.

Book Description

The great architectural significance of Albemarle County and Charlottesville, Virginia, rests, not surprisingly, on the continuing influence of Thomas Jefferson. Not only did Jefferson design the State Capitol in Richmond, his home Monticello, his country retreat Poplar Forest, and the University of Virginia; after his death, master builders continued to construct important examples of Jeffersonian classicism in Albemarle County and beyond.

But what is less well known are the many important examples of other architectural idioms built in this Piedmont Virginia county, many by nationally renowned architects. At the turn of the twentieth century, the renewed interest of wealthy clients in eclectic architectural styles attracted some of the finest Beaux Arts architects in the country to the Charlottesville area. Grand new buildings complemented and competed with the Jeffersonian models of a hundred years earlier. In addition, throughout its history Albemarle County has seen construction of a great variety of public architectural landmarks: mills and churches, movie theaters and hospitals, gas stations and taverns.

For many years K. Edward Lay has been teaching, guiding tours of, and writing about this rich architectural legacy. Here at last is his definitive treatment of a topic that has been his life's work, presented in an elegantly illustrated volume. Following a general introduction by John S. Salmon, Lay divides his book into six chronological chapters: "The Georgian Period," "Thomas Jefferson and His Builders," "The Roman Revival (1800-1830)," "The Greek Revival (1830-1860)," "Beyond the Classical Revival," and "The Eclectic Era (1890-1939)." He discusses over 800 buildings, from a Sears house to grand estates, the Abell-Gleason house and the Albemarle County Jail to Wavertree Hall and Zion Baptist Church, with 26 color photographs and 369 black-and-white illustrations complementing his text. A final chapter discusses the University of Virginia. Maps of the area allow readers and visitors to trace the locations of individual buildings and to recognize trends of settlement and construction in the area.

Available to supplement The Architecture of Jefferson Country is a comprehensive CD-ROM inventory of over 3,000 images identified with 2,400 buildings. The CD-ROM allows its user to scroll through county and town maps and click on important buildings to access individual records. The records, drawings, and photographs are searchable by building type or characteristic, surname, or other keyword. As an important bonus the CD-ROM includes the 1907 Massie Map of the county, a large, detailed wall map showing historical data and the locations of buildings. The map is definitively indexed and has never been reproduced since its origin.

With the CD-ROM or alone as an elegant giftbook or reference, The Architecture of Jefferson Country gives architects, historians, visitors, and residents an unprecedented view of the wealth of buildings in Charlottesville and Albemarle County.

            Book Description

Strategic planning can guarantee the survival of a financial institution, while lack of planning can ensure its demise. Douglas Austin and Craig Bernard have written a straightforward, pull-no-punches book that tells senior management how to develop a strategic plan and, just as important, what to do with the strategic plan once they have it. The emphasis is on review of previous plans, implementation of a new strategic plan, and rewriting the strategic plan on an annual basis. In an entertaining but always direct style, this book reveals: How to produce effective strategic plans for merger and acquisition activity; Positive short and long term implications of well-focused strategic planning; An in-depth discussion of valuation procedures for preparing to sell a financial institution.

                Book Description

Great powers often initiate risky military and diplomatic inventions in far-off, peripheral regions that pose no direct threat to them, risking direct confrontation with rivals in strategically inconsequential places. Why do powerful countries behave in a way that leads to entrapment in prolonged, expensive, and self-defeating conflicts?

Jeffrey W. Taliaferro suggests that such interventions are driven by the refusal of senior officials to accept losses in their state's relative power, international status, or prestige. Instead of cutting their losses, leaders often continue to invest blood and money in failed excursions into the periphery. Their policies may seem to be driven by rational concerns about power and security, but Taliaferro deems them to be at odds with the master explanation of political realism.

Taliaferro constructs a "balance-of-risk" theory of foreign policy that draws on defensive realism (in international relations) and prospect theory (in psychology). He illustrates the power of this new theory in several case narratives: Germany's initiation and escalation of the 1905 and 1911 Moroccan crises, the United States's involvement in the Korean War in 1950-52, and Japan's entanglement in the second Sino-Japanese war in 1937-40 and its decisions for war with the U.S. in 1940-41.

Ken Davis has a very good sense of humor that helps us look at our everyday problems and situations and he gives us ideas on how to make the best of it. I used it for our Jr. High Bible class and it was a good conversation starter and problem solver.

5 out of 5 stars How to keep your sanity while preserving your kids'.......2000-04-01

This is a great book for any youth leader. It provides sensative and thoughtful insight into how hard it is for teenagers growing up in today's world. All too often, adults forget that they, too, were once teenagers.

This book uses sound Biblical references in trying to show teenagers that they are: 1) not alone, 2) their parents DO love them and 3) their parents are not out to get them!

I am using this book for an 8-week Bible study with 9-12 graders at my church for Sunday School. They found the 2nd chapter about the inside of your parents' minds hilarious and helpful. Yes, they DO believe there is a microchip in their parents' brains that is programmed to ruin their lives and their fun! The chapter on sibling relationships is equally well-done.

I think this book is providing good food for thought for my kids about how to survive in their families and make a difference, not only in their families, but in the world as young disciples of the Risen Lord.

This book breaks new ground in several major areas. It pioneers the idea that parenting skills for adolescence can be taught and learned. Amongst the skills the book teaches are:

Understanding how to live amicably with teenagers--knowing the difference between praise and criticism--and how to use both effectively.

Knowing the secrets of "time and touch"--and how to communicate love.

Problem-solving techniques that allow a family to solve problems without aggravation.

How to communicate effectively within the home--and solve problems.

What is normal teenage behavior--and how to recognize it.

Body language and how to communicate--and how to communicate positively with teens.

The difference between authority and control--and when to use it.

How to recognize anger in the parent--and how parents can deal with anger constructively.

Why teens blow up--out of proportion--and how to cool off family situations and avoid fighting.

Problem-solving skills that solve family conflicts.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book on Special Schools and Prescribed Drugs.......2005-08-05

I was touched by this book written by a struggling mother who got mad when caught up in a seemingly deceitful school/medical system. She provided a lot of useful information about what to do and what not to do to get help for a child. Can the people you would normally put your trust in, really be so cruel and deceitful just to cover their mistakes? My heart goes out to this mother. More people need to speak out. This book contains a lot of useful contact information as well.

5 out of 5 stars Honest, Realistic and Hilarous.......2001-02-09

Having a special needs child, I have read so many books about parenting in my journey to find out what I was doing wrong, I have learned a lot from this book. While Christian based, it did not smother me in many of the typical ways that have made me feel that I should be damned into the fiery depths of hell for my shortcomings and/or imperfections as a parent. It is the first book I have read that not only admits parents are imperfect, but celebrates that very fact! What a relief to not be brow-beaten by "perfect" parents and those "expert" child professionals. This book will make you laugh until you cry as you listen to the author tell stories as if he had been sitting in your livingroom watching you. This is a definite read for parents who want realistic ideas on parenting and for parents who need to be reinforced for not being a perfect parent. Outstanding! I only wish Amazon could get the publisher to print this one again!

                                  Book Description

Grippingly told, Blood for Dignity is the tale of a fas-cin-a-ting and little-known piece of American history, told through the eyes of K Company, 394th Regiment-the first black soldiers integrated into white combat units since the Ameri-can Revolution. From basic training in the Deep South, to hard labor in Europe, these men traveled a long and difficult road before they could fight for their country. The 394th finally saw combat at the Remagen Bridgehead as they fought side-by-side with white soldiers, driving back a broken, but still danger-ous German army in 1945. The performance of these soldiers laid to rest the accepted white attitude of a century and a half that blacks were cowardly and inferior fighters. In fact, they proved to be just the opposite. In-depth interviews with many who fought in the 394th help paint an absorbing, combat-heavy portrait of men fighting together for their nation.

5 out of 5 stars Gives recognition but also tells an exciting battle story.......2003-03-09

As the son of a 99th Division infantryman, I heard stories of The Battle of the Bulge, and the Remagan Bridge battles. So when I saw this unique book on the first "integrated" army units of WWII, many serving in the 99th, I purchased it. Just as Chinese workers were rarely pictured in the 19th Century railway construction photos, black soldiers never appeared in popular WWII films, except when seen as laborers, servants, orderlies, or drivers. This book helps to initiate wider recognition of these men and a historical correction. Each of the early chapters contain contemptuous outrages of life in the U.S. Army, including racist incidents, segregated Red Cross centers, poor training, and earned combat medals that were never delivered to African American soldiers. German POW's were treated better than black soldiers, in many cases, and one can imagine life for soldiers from the Northern states who were shipped to racist Southern states for training, such as at Camp van Dorn. The book details how at the end of the war, black combat soldiers were quickly sent back to their old units, sowing bitterness. The dignity for their spilled blood did not come until fifty years later. Colley, who briefly outlines the contributions of black soldiers in colonial American armies, the Civil War, and the Spanish American War, opens this book in the heat of a battle, when black volunteers come to rescue their fellow infantrymen in K Company on March 13, 1945. 2,221 African American soldiers in about 52 platoons were allowed to volunteer for combat assignments as the war was coming to an end. This book mainly focuses on members of the 5th of K (99th Infantry, 394 Infantry Regiment, K Company, 5th platoon, led by Lt. Richard Ralston) and the 5th of E. The author introduces the reader to these men's lives prior to war, and shows their evolution into combat troops. By the close of the war, as Iserlohn falls, and the 394th crossed the Altmuhl, they are grizzled veterans. An excellent book, an exciting read, and a necessary contribution to American History.
