Book Description
The old buildings and historic places of British Columbia form a kind of "roadside memory," a tangible link with stories of settlement, change, and abandonment that reflect the great themes of Western history. More than a decade ago, Michael Kluckner began painting these dots on his personal map of the province in a watercolor sketchbook. With small towns declining and old rural properties changing, so little of the history of these places has been recorded in museums or archives, and so much of it may disappear "within a heartbeat" as families disperse and memories dim.
After he put a few of the sketches onto his web site, a network of correspondents emerged that eventually led him to the family letters, photo albums, and memories from a disappearing era. Vanishing British Columbia is a record of these places and the stories they tell, and an argument for stewardship of regional history in the face of urbanization and globalization.

A moving tribute to a vanishing world.......2005-10-06
Even as the face of British Columbia is changing, artist Michael Kluckner is capturing a vanishing region in watercolors, as best he can. Vanishing British Columbia uses words and images to examine ethnic sites and diverse roadside towns and worlds. Historic towns, houses, railways, and more are given strong social and historical treatment in a moving tribute to a vanishing world.

Book Description
The role of the stock market in the recent global financial crisis has led many to question the way in which the modern international financial system operates. This highly topical book offers important insights into the stock market, contrasting the speculative explanation of stock market fluctuations with the conventional efficient markets hypothesis.
After summarizing economists' views on stock market behavior from the classical period to the present day, the authors focus on two particular explanations of stock price fluctuations. They examine in detail the mainstream neo-classical theory with its emphasis on the efficient markets hypothesis. They then compare this with the theories of Veblen, Galbraith and Keynes who consider markets as being inherently prone to speculation and crisis, in contrast to the neo-classical approach which largely ignores the instability of stock markets and particularly the crashes that have recently occurred. The authors go on to develop a speculative model to account for stock market fluctuations which provides a useful and realistic explanation of how stock price expectations are formed.
This book will be welcomed by bankers, financial and monetary economists, historians of economic thought and all those interested in the causes of the recent market crashes.

Book Description
The first comprehensive history of the Chrysler Corporation, this book is intended for readers interested in the history of automobiles and of American business, and for fans and critics of Chrysler's products.
Customer Reviews:
A brilliant effort on a flawed company.......2006-10-16
Excellent analysis of the somewhat tortured history of Chrysler. From humble beginnings to corporate powerhouse, Professor Hyde brings to life a story on Chrysler seldom told with such rich detail. Inside you'll find facts and figures to back up Hyde's thesis. Chrysler is certainly a roller coaster, for customers, employees, and shareholders. Hyde's account is balanced and insightful and no automotive afficionado should be without this book.
a major contribution to business and technological history.......2003-09-29
In many ways the most interesting of the "Big Three" automobile manufacturers, the Chrysler Corporation has seen as many ups and downs as the evocative title of this volume suggests. Charles Hyde, a professor of history at Wayne State University, has produced a thorough, scholarly, yet highly readable book on a company that was the second largest producer of automobiles in North America at several points in its long history and was nearly out of business at others. The main thread of this fascinating story begins with the formation of a new automobile company by Walter P. Chrysler in 1925 and ends shortly after the merger of Chrysler and Daimler-Benz in 1998. However, Hyde has also given us detailed coverage of the developments that led up to the formation.
This is primarily a business history with a focus on corporate management and the marketing of automobiles. It is also a study of Chrysler products and the technology that created them. Hyde is both an economic historian and an industrial archaeologist. His understanding of assembly line production and the architecture of automobile plants is second to none. He says in his preface that "The origins of this book go back to late 1980, when I took on the monumental task of documenting the sprawling Dodge Main factory complex in Hamtramck, Michigan, before its demolition."
Hyde has filled an important need by writing the definitive history of the Chrysler Corporation. This is much more than a synthesis of existing scholarship. Most of his
interpretation is based on original archival research. Among the many significant historical contributions is his coverage of Dodge Brothers, which became a key part of Chrysler in 1928. Also very impressive is Hyde's discussion of the Chrysler Airflow (1934-1937), a major advance in engineering but a failure in style and sales. He even devotes an entire chapter to Chrysler's amazingly effective shift to military production for World War II.
The fascinating characters in this book give it a vitality lacking in most business histories. Hyde provides a new look at Walter P. Chrysler, one that sometimes differs from the image that this dynamic captain of industry tried to project in his autobiography. Those who need another fix of Lee Iacocca stories will not be disappointed. We also learn a great deal about such important but often overlooked figures as Carl Breer and Virgil Exner, who had so much to do
with the form and function of Chrysler products.
Riding the Roller Coaster should be required reading for anyone with an interest in the automobile industry. Serious scholars will welcome the new information and insights that Hyde delivers in every chapter. Those who simply love cars or want to understand the business strategies that produce them will also be pleased by this fine book.
Entire Chrysler story: Dodge/Plymouth/Exner/NASCAR/Up/Down.........2003-09-17
I really like old Chrysler and especially old Dodge cars and trucks and until I read this book I hadn't read the entire company story in one book before. There are other books about Walter Chrysler and the Dodge Bros. and Lee Iacocca and their cars but not everything told together in one big story before. This book starts at the very beginning of Walter Chrysler's career when he worked sweeping the floors at the Chicago & Great Western Railroad and how he was one of the early pioneers that saw the potential of the automobile. Eventually he went to work for Buick and learned the business so well he bought his own car company.
This book also tells the curious history of the Dodge Bros. and how they worked with Henry Ford but then decided to build their own Dodge Bros. cars which Chrysler later bought out. The book covers the Great Depression and how the company managed to get through it when so many other companies failed. The author also tells how Chrysler contributed to WWII by building military equipment. I especially liked the chapters on the '50's and 60's which tells about how Chrysler needed to build dealerships in the suburbs and sun belt states to survive--I hadn't ever read that before--and how they got Virgil Exner to design their cars. I really liked the parts on Carl Kiekhaefer and NASCAR in the mid-'50s.
I kind of get tired of reading about Lee Iacocca so I mostly skipped over that part and I'm not much interested in the later Chryslers except the Viper but I thought this was a really good book about the company. It's got some statistical tables and lots of illustrations. I met the author at my library where he spoke about his book and he was very friendly and signed my book.
Nothing new.......2003-09-14
This book is fine for someone who has no previous knowledge of the subject. However, for anyone who has read other materials on this topic, this book had nothing new to say, even though there was much that could be said, particularly of the post-Iacocca and post-DC merger eras.
For my money, Moritz' and Seaman's "Going For Broke" remains the best book on the history of the old Chrysler Corp., even though that book is now 23 years old.
Well Done History of an Important American Company.......2003-06-12
Books on the history of companies have never interested me much. When my friend told me he had finished writing his book on Chrysler, I cringed because I knew Charlie would expect me to read it. Poring through a boring company history was not something I looked forward to. But I figured I would bite the bullet and at least skim through it. My father and brother worked for Chrysler and my daughter is working there this summer as an interne. With the pathetic exception of a Ford Pinto, all the cars I have ever owned were Chryslers. So maybe by reading this book I would learn a something interesting about the company my family is associated with as laborers and the cars that I owned.
Much to my surprise I found this history of Chrysler to be very interesting and entertaining. Riding the Roller Coaster brings to life the history of Chrysler by focusing on the key people who contributed to the company's development, including Walter P. Chrysler and Lee Iacocca. Charlie covers labor issues, gives enough details of technological developments for a novice to follow along, and discusses all the important points of Chrysler's complex history even including the Redstone missile that my father first worked on when he joined the company. Charlie's analysis of the key people at Chrysler is balanced but he does not shy away from making critical observations. In his chapter discussing the "merger" between Chrysler and Daimler, Charlie does not hold his punches.
The roller coaster analogy is perfect. Reading through the ups and downs of Chrysler I reflected on how these changes affected my family and realized that we too, like other families of Chrysler workers, were riding this same roller coaster. This book helped put my experiences as a child of a Chrysler employee into perspective. I recall the times my dad was laid off or on strike and when my dad briefly moved us down to Louisiana so he could work at the Michaud plant where the Redstone missile production was transferred. Now I better understand these shifts in the fortunes of my family.
I also enjoyed reading about the introduction of the various car models, the story to their creation, their special features, problems some of them faced, technological achievements incorporated in others, their marketing success or failure, etc. It was fun to reflect on all the Chrysler products my family has owned over the years. The two-toned black and pink 1956 Plymouth Belvedere with the awesome tailfins that was totaled in an accident soon after my dad bought it. This is the first car I can remember. This was one of Chrysler's "Forward Look" models. The last car my dad owned was a K-car Plymouth Reliant that seemed like it would last forever and played such an important role in Chrysler's recent history. As the owner of four Minivans, reading about their development, introduction, and modification was informative.
But of all the Chrysler cars I can recall, the one I remember most particularly is the 1957 Dodge Coronet my dad owned with push button automatic transmission. Now I know that this was the Powerflite automatic transmission with pushbuttons on the dashboard introduced in 1956. I distinctly recall this car because when I was four or five I sat in my dad's car, innocently parked in our drive way, and continuously pushed the buttons until I succeeded in jamming them. My father had to call a tow truck, he was not pleased! Apparently the Chrysler engineers had not taken into account how fascinating the buttons were to a kid.
All in all Riding the Roller Coaster does a very good job reviewing the history of Chrysler and I would recommend it to anyone interested in this company. Charlie is a good writer and he makes it a pleasure to turn the pages. Reading this book was a pleasant walk through my family's association with Chrysler as both workers and consumers. If you can find a better book on Chrysler--buy it.
Book Description
In this incisive reinterpretation of the history of the American labor movement, Howard Kimeldorf challenges received thinking about rank-and-file workers and the character of their unions. Battling for American Labor answers the baffling question of how, while mounting some of the most aggressive challenges to employing classes anywhere in the world, organized labor in the United States has warmly embraced the capitalist system of which they are a part. Rejecting conventional understandings of American unionism, Kimeldorf argues that what has long been the hallmark of organized labor in the United States--its distinctive reliance on worker self-organization and direct economic action--can be seen as a particular kind of syndicalism.
Kimeldorf brings this syndicalism to life through two rich and compelling case studies of unionization efforts by Philadelphia longshoremen and New York City culinary workers during the opening decades of the twentieth century. He shows how these workers, initially affiliated with the radical IWW and later the conservative AFL, pursued a common logic of collective action at the point of production that largely dictated their choice of unions. Elegantly written and deeply engaging, Battling for American Labor offers insights not only into how the American labor movement got to where it is today, but how it might possibly reinvent itself in the years ahead.
Customer Reviews:
Unconvincing finding of class consciousness.......1999-11-23
The author's primary goal is to destroy the myth held by many that the American working class turned to the AFL because it does not regard itself as a class in opposition to the capitalist class. More of the myth is that workers do not find it necessary to participate in politics and they view capitalism kindly.
His means of making his case is to follow the various ups and downs of the shiploaders of Philadelphia and the culinary workers of New York City from 1913 into the 1930s. He clearly shows that when workers are strategically located and can control the relevant labor market that they can extract concessions from employers as long as those advantages remain. In both cases the fortunes of workers rose and fell many times.
A weakness of the book is that it does not explore the ramifications to workers' lives to operate in a direct action mode. What sort of hardships were endured and what were the effects on workers' thinking about capitalistic relations? The claim that in their actions lies class consciousness is not convincing. Obviously some solidarity is needed to effect a strike, but it seems fairly evident that the actions of the workers represented mostly a realistic assessment of their situation and of the best means to achieve economic gains. The actions of the workers could in no sense be termed revolutionary; they are presented in the context of a contest of economic wills within US capitalism.
There is no doubt that class consciousness would have to exist in a capitalistic society for the working class to make permanent headway. In many social democracies, workers have expressed themselves through political parties. That has not occurred in the US. The author does not mention that adverse judicial rulings of that era could be a reason that the political route was not taken by US workers. The IWW viewed direct action as a way of transforming capitalistic relations, but the author demonstrates that workers had little interest in IWW ideology.
Other than a few passing comments, the reader is hard-pressed to determine any applicability to the present era. Industrial relations have been completely transformed in the US with the passage of the NLRA and the rulings of the NLRB and the courts since the era under discussion. Furthermore, working class culture has embraced consumerism as the operant ideology. One wonders whether the author would like to mount an argument for worker class consciousness at this point in history. One suspects that such an argument would be even less convincing than one from the early 1900s. END

"My first day at school to-day.
Funny sort of day.
Didn't seem to learn much.
Seemed all we did was play.
Then teacher wrote some letters
On a board all painted black,
And then we had a story and...
I don't think I'll go back."
Sure, Mama said there'll be days like this, but little did she know they could be so perfectly captured in a poetry anthology. In this catchy collection, Simon James gathers 19 poems by writers such as Rod Hull ("First Day of School"), Eve Merriam, Ogden Nash, and Charlotte Zolotow; illustrates them; and wham! Days like this become something to look forward to. Celebrating the joys and trials of summer days at the beach, strumming a one-string guitar in the moonlight, bouncing on a bed, and watching rain fall, this buoyant book is worth a second, third, or 99th look. James's sensitive watercolor portrayals of the world as seen through the eyes of small people will amuse and touch readers of all ages. Simon James is the author-illustrator of many acclaimed picture books, including Leon and Bob, a New York Times Book Review Best Illustrated Book of the Year. (Ages 4 and older) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
"Each brief verse has the rhythmic lilt and play with sounds and meaning that so engage young children. . . . But James's illustrations are the best feature of this inviting collection." —THE HORN BOOK (starred review)
DAYS LIKE THIS is a book of celebration — whether it's the novelty of sleeping outdoors, the delight of picnicking on the beach, or the sheer joy of bouncing on the bed in the afternoon. These small poems, some familiar, some new, have been carefully selected by acclaimed author-illustrator Simon James, whose expressive line and watercolors portray an everyday world overflowing with wonder and possibility. With words and pictures given space to breathe, this is a collection of poems to read and revel in from beginning to end.
Customer Reviews:
Endearing poetry for girls AND boys.......2007-05-25
This book contains awesome writing-- poetry that engages even adults who don't love poetry, but love to share special reading moments with children. It appeals to boys and girls (a good thing, since much children's poetry is illustrated with foofy, flowery art... which I do like, as well). My 3-year-old-daughter knows them all. We often recall lines from the poems when we're out in the world, making for fun shared moments and common ground between us. My husband enjoys reading it to her, too. The illustrations set the perfect tone. I have given this as a gift to children who's parents later thanked me for this jewel. Thank YOU, Simon James, for creating a treasure for our family.
Perfect introduction to poetry for any child..........2001-02-08
"Days Like This" is the perfect introduction to poetry for a small child. The sketchy, squiggly illustrations are just as captivating as the simple, sweet poems that accompany them. Each illustration tells a story by itself--a refreshing story of the wide, open world--while the poems focus the reader (or listener) to consider a single aspect of that world. The text and the pictures worked so beautifully together that I'm not sure if I can say which was illustrating which. It's a symbiosis I've never experienced in a book of poetry before, but let me assure you, it is thoroughly enjoyable!
Days Like This: A Collection of Small Poems.......2000-07-08
This lovely picture book of small poems captivated my youngson. Simon James' pen and watercolor illustrations beautifully setoff a collection of whimsical verse that spans the four seasons. "The Wind came running over the sand, it caught and held me by the hand."
Book Description
Glory Enough For All is the groundbreaking story of the Civil War cavalry battle that took place at Trevilian Station, Virginia, in June 1864, as well as the ordeal of Sheridan's second cavalry raid. After the ferocious fighting at Cold Harbor, Virginia, Union Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant ordered his cavalry, commanded by Maj. Gen. Philip H. Sheridan, to distract the Confederate forces opposing the Army of the Potomac. Author Eric Wittenberg chronicles the battle that resulted when Confederate cavalry pursued and caught their Federal foes at Trevilian Station, which was, perhaps, the only truly decisive cavalry battle of the Civil War. Wittenberg tells the stories of the men who fought there, including eight Union Medal of Honor winners and one Confederate whose death at Trevilian Station made him the third of three brothers to die in the service of Company A of the 4th Virginia Cavalry. It also addresses the little-known but critical cavalry battle at Samaria (St. Mary's) Church on June 24, 1864, where Union Brig. Gen. David M. Gregg's division was nearly destroyed. This well-researched study features appendixes that outline the order of battle, strengths, and losses on both sides. The only modern strategic analysis of the battle, it challenges prevailing interpretations of the Union cavalry and of General Sheridan. Eric Wittenberg shows that the outcome of Trevilian Station ultimately prolonged Grant's efforts to end the Civil War.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding Campaign Study.......2005-03-25
Mr. Wittenberg makes a convincing case for the decisiveness of this cavalry battle and campaign, and his evaluations of Sheridan, Hampton, Fitz Lee, and others are fair and incisive. He did not need to prove his stature as an authority on the cavalry of the Army of the Potomac, but clearly has done so with this volume and with his subsequent works.
I had the chance to visit the Trevilian battlefield recently, and used this book as a guide. In spite of the paucity of markers (maybe that's a good thing!), it was easy to follow the action using the author's excellent endnotes, maps, and descriptions of terrain.
A local preservation group recently purchased a large portion of the June 11 battlefield, which is a very good sign. Anyone interested in the Civil War's eastern theater should not miss this book.
Just Excellent!.......2004-09-27
Mr. Wittenberg is the author of several books on cavalry operations in the Eastern Theater, all well documented, informative and very readable. This book is my personal favorite. He hits the "sweet spot", balancing a solid battlefield history with personal experiences of the participants. The history set up an experience, which amplifies and explains the history bridging the story to the next incident. The result is an informative history of Sheridan's cavalry raid in June 1864 with an in the saddle feel rarely found in nonfiction books.
The heart of the book is the battles of Trevilian Station on June 11 & 12, 1864 and Samaria Church on June 24, 1862. Trevilian Station is Sheridan's attempt to cut the vital Virginia Central Railroad and Samaria Church is Hampton's attempt to capture Sheridan's wagon train. The two battles do not stand-alone but exist in Sheridan's cavalry raid, with the raid firmly placed in Grant's Overland Campaign. This means that the reader never forgets the total operation and the war. Very often, battle histories do not include or spend very little time on the larger issues causing us to miss this vital information.
This raid contains a who's who of Eastern cavalry personalities: Philip Sheridan, Wade Hampton, Fitzhugh Lee and George Custer are well known, Thomas Rosser, Matthew Butler, Alfred Torbert, Wesley Merritt and David Gregg much less so. Each man has an interesting word portrait with a detailed account of his role. Mr. Wittenberg draws some interesting conclusions about the battle and the men. As always, his conclusions are well supported and thought provoking, making for a book that is both an introduction with something for the more knowledgeable too.
Gory Enough for All.......2002-09-25
A useful and vivid study of the largest all-cavalry battle in the Civil War. The author's trenchant criticism of Sheridan is especially interesting as he does most of his work on Michigan cavalry--thus can't be accused of Southern partisanship. It's a long and detailed account, including plenty of quotes for human interest as well as an assessment of the battle's tactical and strategic import. In a larger context, it works well to fill a gap--cavalry actions get less scholarship than I think they should--and to offer a perspective on Sheridan that differs slightly from the norm.
IT IS ABOUT TIME.......2001-10-16
It is about time that a true scholarly description of this long neglected but fascinating battle has been written. It destroys quite a number of myths! Sheridan was not invincible. The Confederate Cavalry did not die at Yellow Tavern with J.E.B. Stuart (it died at Appomattox with the rest of the ANVa). That Wade Hampton was a capable and perhaps more suitable cavalry commander for that period of the war. I bet that with even numbers that Hampton would have trounced Sheridan. As it was, outnumbered he stopped Sheridan cold and hurt him bad.
The battle is exciting, complex and had Hampton had just a little more strength Sheridan would have been in bad trouble; as it was he was hard pressed to claim any real results.
It is also hoped that this draws more attention to the preservation of this battlefield, which is in pretty good shape- but the bull dozers will come eventually.
This is a book for learning Civil War personalities, style of command, how cavalry fought in the civil war and documents this battle superbly. Well done and well worth the price od admission. I'll be on the outlook for more by Messr Wittenburg.
Outstanding Coverage of Trevillian Station Fight.......2001-08-27
Phil Sheridan's battle against the Confederates at Trevillian Station is covered in 391 pages with maps, photos, orders of battle, statistics on loses, an excellent bibliography, and index. Author Eric Wittenberg has done an outstanding job of narration, explanation, and interpretation of the battle. (Wittenberg's knowledge of the Union cavalry adds to the book immensely, as does his keen appreciation of the landscape.) This text is a treat for Civil War buffs and would be a great addition to the library of descendants of those on both sides who were participants.

Good overview of the Crater, pedestrian writing.......2007-01-10
Duane Schultz is a historian. Why he chose to write a historical novel I don't know. He's done other stuff on the Civil War (on the Dahlgren raid on Richmond, for instance) but as far as I know this is his only, to date, historical novel, in any setting.
The story mainly follows the Union side, and focuses for the most part on Henry Pleasants, the young Lt. Col. of the 48th Pennsylvania Volunteers who led the construction of what was, at the time, the longest military mine (think a tunnel with explosive charges planted at the far end) that had ever been constructed, in history. Pleasants, a mining engineer in civilian life, was insistent that he could construct such a mine, and in spite of protests from experts, went ahead and did it. The ensuing explosion destroyed a portion of the Confederate lines outside the city of Petersburg, but the Union attack mounted thereafter was a poor effort and the result was a disaster for the Yankees. Blame can be spread pretty much everywhere in the Union army, from drunken or cowardly division commanders (two of whom waited out the battle in a bomb shelter, drinking) to Burnside, the Corps commander of doubtful competence, to Meade and Grant, who of course shifted the leadership of the attack at the last minute without consulting anyone, thereby screwing the whole thing up.
The odd thing about this book is that it's already been done, as a novel, and a bit more poetically at that. The other book is Richard Slotkin's "The Crater" which was published maybe 20-25 years ago. Slotkin's book is longer, gives more attention to the Confederates (here they're merely background, for the most part), and spends a lot of time with the Black troops who were supposed to lead the attack. Schultz limits his discussion of everything other than Pleasants.
I enjoyed this book, but frankly remember Slotkin's book as better, and would probably recommend it instead, if there were a choice. Glory Enough for All isn't bad, though.
Completely absorbing story which echos today.......2005-04-15
This an absolutely absorbing story of the Battle fo the Crater near the end of the civil war. But this book is more than just a civil war novel. It is a study of how people with different agendas and motives affected the war, and ultimately the lives of many people. If you work in corporate America, you will see modern simliarities which will makeyou simulatneously laugh and cry: The general from West Point who wrote the book on military mining but never stepped foot in a mine; the poor decisions made because the motive was to personally win, at the expense of winning the war; the yankee ingenuity of the 'workers' to solve problems in spite of no support -- even intereference -- from above. It is a wonderful story that is easy to tell as a teaching aid later. Great book!
The "Killer Angels" type novel of the Crater at Petersburg........1997-12-30
From a top-notch historian comes top-notch historical fiction bringing light and life to the story of the Crater at Petersburg like "Killer Angels" did for Gettysburg. The story is told from the viewpoint of the Union Army's 48th Pennsylvania Volunteers, raised in the coal-mining country of Pennsylvania, and commanded by a former mining engineer. Individual players are brought to life, from coal miner-soldiers and young officers to well-known generals Burnside, McClellan and Grant. One seems to get a good feel for the soldier's life in the trenches around Petersburg. Despite knowing the eventual outcome from one's history books, author Duane Schultz builds a high degree of suspense for the reader-- it was hard to put this book down between readings! I also enjoyed the almost unnoticed peripheral benefit of learning a lot about the strategies, logistics, tactics, and military thought of the day. Glory Enough for All is a great historical novel that could almost double as a history text, yet at the same time it's as riveting as a fictional story can be. Highly recommended for the general audience. Definitely a "Must Read" for Civil War enthusiasts.

Realism, tragedy and period detail of 1864 Union fiasco.......1996-07-17
A fine blend of historical facts, attitudes and personalities
from a mostly Union characters. Good presentation of a Confederate
sharpshooter, Union coal mining soldiers, brave front line commanders
and stupid generals. Racism is a issue in this novel as it was
in the Union and Confederate armies of the time. Close to a "I
don't think I can put it down" experience. It left an impression
of the courage of the soldiers on both sides and disgust with the generals who
never thought the attack through. The setting is Petersburg,
VA, 1864.

Excellent docu-fiction on the siege of Petersburg, VA.......2005-04-03
This book is very similar in style to the great series of Civil War docu-fictions written by Jeff and Michael Shaara ("Gods and Generals", "The Killer Angels", "The Last Full Measure"). In "Glory" we pretty much stay behind the Union lines, sensing the low morale of the entrenched troops and the desperate desire to end the war quickly before the Pres. election of 1864.
The book centers around the Forty-Eighth PA volunteers, their brilliant leader (and engineer), Lt. Col. Henry Pleasants, and the mine they dug underneath Confederate lines in an attempt to end the seige. The story is told in a gripping discussion of wartime politics, personality clashes, outstanding engineering and good-old-fashioned back-breaking work. There are MANY different subplots to the whole endeaveor, providing the reader with outstanding insight into what may have transpired during this period of the war. With so many odds (man-made, technical and natural) stacked against them, the Forty-Eighth's achievement is remarkable.
Overall, just a great read for a Civil War enthusiast (a bit too focused on a tiny part of the whole conflict if you're new to studying the war). The reader must keep in mind that while much of the novel is based on documented fact, it is still a fiction; many details (conversations, etc.) were not fully documented and the author "theorizes" how a conversation may have occured. In the end, perhaps only a history purist would not enjoy this detailed look into this extraordinary attempt to end the war in one "blow" (pun intended!).

Primary documents that can really illustrate history.......2001-11-18
Voices of Power is a very helpful book to see the actual words of those who have led countries in times of strife and success. Divided into sections on authoritarian, totalitarian, democratic and presidential leaders, this book offers small and long documents that support history's judgements.
In some cases, interviews are excerpted, and in others, speeches. Churchill, Meir, Khruschev, Trotsky, Stalin- they are all here with two dozen other counterparts. i really recommend this book to history buffs and teachers- I don't think I can use it enough!

Book Description
Stellar pulsations provide a complex system in stars. This complexity is studied by analyzing the non-sinusoidal, semi-regular, or irregular light curves. This unique volume summarizes the application of recent theoretical results obtained from stellar pulsation studies. In addition, the latest developments in hydrodynamic simulations are discussed. A historical sketch of the study of beat Cepheids, first known for their variable amplitudes, is given as an introduction to the book. This introduction clearly demonstrates how complicated the study of variable stars can be, and therefore challenges and invites the reader to study the entire book.
