Severely dated, but still excellent.......2007-06-17
St. Louis is an architectural treasure, much like many of our other rust-belt cities. Cleveland, Baltimore, and Pittsburgh also fall into this category. These cities retain much of their old classical buildings from a time when the idea of grand public architecture meant something to the eye and was a source of civic pride. St. Louis is a fine example of this idea, and a real treat for American urban architecture lovers. The book itself is quite dated, published in 1989, but the authors do an excellent job of choosing the structures they know we will want to see. All the classics are here, all with at least one photograph and a nice descriptive essay. Also, the authors have taken the time to bring us many of the most interesting old structures from the surrounding towns as well. A new addition would be a real treat.
ST. LOUIS.......2006-04-14
I remember the first time I visited St. Louis, I was expecting a run down, dirty, industrial mess, much like Detroit, so you can imagine my surprise with what I found. I loved the city, it was clean and quite beautiful, especially the area around Forest Park. This book does a fine job of capturing the St. Louis I experienced, I especially appreciated that every entry is accompanied with a requisite photo, that should be de riguer in a book of this sort. This book is divided up and it covers not just the city, but the environs, which is essential. If you have any interest in St. Louis, or quite frankly if you have any appreciation in architecture then you will not be disappointed in this wonderful book.
Good survey of the St. Louis area's architecture.......2000-01-03
This is one of the best guidebooks for a city's architecture I've seen. The entries cover not only St. Louis proper but also the entire metro area, reaching far into the suburbs in both Missouri and Illinios. Every entry has at least one photograph, a rarity for such books. The maps are clear and concise; a regional map shows where each local map is located. Also includes a number of color photographs in the introduction pages. About the only thing I would fault the book for is skipping a few of downtown's historic towers; however, the book does an excellent job of directing city explorers to St. Louis's most interesting areas.

The early glory and late exhaustion of St. Louis architecture.......2005-07-01
This is a fine little book, prepared for an annual conference of the American Institute of Architects that was held in St. Louis in the late 1980s. It has a succinct history of the city, fine pictures and captions, and it is conveniently organized by sub-areas. Without explicitly intending to do so, it demonstrates the early glory and the more recent but steady decline that the city has experienced. Buildings dating to before World War Two are enduring works of architecture that could stand up and do well when compared with any other city in the country. After the War, and before a few examples built after the book was published such as the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts by Tadao Ando, the city saw most of the new construction move to the suburbs. Particularly in the case of commercial structures, most are designed in so generic a fashion that they could fit in any suburban office park in the country. But for the magnificent Arch and for some International Style homes, there is little to cheer about.
Customer Reviews:
Great art but not very helpful.......2007-06-13
This book is definitely not for beginners. I recommend this for skilled or somewhat intermediate artists.
This book is good as a reference and nothing more. I wouldn't call this book instructive at all. The How to Draw Manga title is misleading. How to Draw implies instruction this book is more of a reference than instructional.
Excellent reference material - but not for beginners.......2005-09-09
This is the sort of reference book made for people who already have a grasp of human body drawing basics. This is made more to build up from those basics, to show you what a body in action looks like. It also gives a lot of Japanese names for things (like mukoozune -- kicking someone in the shins). For a nice touch, not every scene depicted is totally serious appearing; there are several little goofy looking action scenes, true to the anime nature. A good buy for the beginning artist who wishes to build their skills.
Just to clarify..........2005-09-01
If you're worried about nudity, then don't get the book. It should be noted, however, that most shounen genre (which has a lot of action / hero comics), has a lot of this "vile" stuff. Although the base is changing, most of their readers are teen boys, and they do something called a little "fan service".
Beginners may want to wait before getting this, or hold on to it if they already own it. It's a fairly good book on illustrating battle and fighting, and I have yet to see another book that does as well on the subject.
Great Book.......2005-04-07
hello all
DESPISE ALL THE BAD ADIVCE. This book is NOT VULGER or GROSS. This book is great referance. The Nudity and all graphics are Needed for real life movements and other things. Unless you are going to illastrate a lill baby children books. you don't want it. now if you are serious about manga and anime. you NEED THIS BOOK. well thank you for your time.
Do not get this book.......2004-12-21
I repeat: you do not want to get this book. I ordered it for a friend for christmas and I looked over it before I wrapped it. And boy, was I glad I did! This book has vile, obscene, and had highly unappropriate content. I was hideously disgusted and was so ashamed I picked the book in the first place- I walked to the trash can and put it in. A complete waste of money and I had to go to the store that night to find a last minute replacement book. If you want a book, I would highly recommend the book How to Draw Manga, All The Basics. That was the book I got for my other friend, and it was very impressive. At the risk of sounding redundant, I say: Unless you want to burn money- DON'T BUY THIS BOOK

All Women Are Basically Southern.......2004-04-26
Lindsey O'Connor confirmed what I have suspected for some time now--that all women have roots in the "south." Only it's not the south you think of with towering magnolia trees, it's the south of stress related to the towering responsibilities of marriage and motherhood. Lindsey "gets" the fact that women are often fatigued in every since of the word, but her faith in a God up North, so to speak, helps us gain the perspective we need to keep those downward turns to a minimum. I also found her take on modesty bold and refreshing--every church youth leader and Christian mother should read this book.
Very Good Book.......2004-04-07
I really enjoyed this book

Book Description
Who's driving credit unions asks and answers whether a volunteer board or a professional management team is in the best position today to deal with fast paced changes and complex issues. A brief history of the evolution of credit unions from the early 1930s to current times reveals how the internal change of decision processes has not kept pace with the rate of change externally. Credit union trade associations and regulatory agencies focus on the largest population of credit unions that require traditional decision processes. The remainder struggle to modernize their processes without the support they need from regulators. This book offers ideas for boards, CEOs, and regulators to take practical steps that may allow these credit unions to thrive in the decades ahead.

Book Description
Is there a conflict between economic democracy and efficiency?
Democracy and Effeciency in the Economic Enterprise confronts this question and its philosophical and empirical dimensions by combining chapters on the theory of the firm, ethical issues and on experiences of various forms of industrial democracy. The contributors show that these issues are of vital importance with major consequences. They argue that the end of the authority of the social bureacrats should not coincide with the beginning of the authority of capitalist counterparts.
Book Description
Dr. Stephen Holt offers a layperson's handbook on cardiovascular disease, with an emphasis on prevention and self-care.
Customer Reviews:
heart views.......2000-08-08
This book is a nice compilation of integrative medicine as it pertains to the prevention of heart disease. As a practicing physician, one is bombarded by questions that were once considered foul territory; now, questions related to alternative medicine are now on the real playing field.
Although lacking cited references, asides from "recommended readings", the author writes in an interesting manner. An easy to follow, non-stringent guide to diet, relaxation, vitamins and natural nutrients are discussed. The book looks at the way to help oneself in the battle against heart disease with assistance from a physician.
The book may be a bit more detailed with "science" beyond the needs of the lay public. Nevertheless, this is a quick flowing book that opens eyes to alternative practices, without bashing conventional medicine.

Book Description
During this period, the outcome of the war was effectively decided by Wellington's advance from Portugal into Spain. The operations that took place at this time included the French campaigns of late 1811, the Allied offensive, and Wellington's great victory at Salamanca. Other notable actions included that at Garcia Hernandez, and there were also smaller operations such as those on the east coast of Spain. Orders of battle, lists of strength and casualties, and an account of Wellington's intelligence officer and code-breaker Sir George Scovell, whose efforts contributed greatly to Wellington's plans of campaign, are given in the appendices to this volume.

The Turning Point of the Peninsular War .......2005-06-04
This affordable paperback edition of Volume V of Charles Oman's definitive study of the Peninsular War covers the turning point of the conflict. In early 1812, Napoleon withdrew some of his Imperial troops from occupied Spain for his ill-fated invasion of Russia. The dispersal of the remaining French troops to hold down Spanish insurgents coincided with a buildup of the Anglo-Portuguese Army, enabling Wellington to go over to the offensive with an experienced and well-trained force. The bold seizure of the Spanish frontier fortresses of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz opened the way for Wellington's magnificent victory of maneuver over Marshal Marmont's French Army at Salamanca. Although Wellington overreached himself at the siege of Burgos and was forced to retrench on the Portuguese frontier over the winter of 1812-1813, the French had lost the initiative in the Peninsular War for good.
Oman brings out how Napoleon's attempts to run the Peninsular War from Paris and Wellington's superior ability to gather intelligence contributed to French defeats. Oman includes a brief but fascinating account, perhaps particularly relevant for modern readers, of the challenges faced by the British Tory government in supporting a long and expensive campaign to dislodge the French from Spain and Portugal. The Whig Party, in opposition, decried every expense and every casualty in favor of an immediate peace treaty with Napoleon. Such a treaty prior to Napoleon's defeat in Russia would have ceded control of Continental Europe to the French Emperor. The Tory government withstood Whig opposition and internal dissension to perservere against Napoleon, trusting Wellington to fulfill the mission of his command.
Oman's command of his subject in volume V is masterful. His narrative is mature and confident. While the focus is on the operational level of war, Oman provides descriptive and ocassionally thrilling vignettes of the critical battles. The footnotes provide much additional context.
This volume and series are highly recommended to serious students of the Napoleonic Wars. The casual reader without background of the conflict may find this volume a very challenging read.
The Complete Story.......2005-05-24
Sir Charles Oman's comprehensive seven volume history of the Peninsular War is the yardstick by which any other history of this theatre must be measured. It is exhaustive in detail and in breadth of coverage. If it happened, it is in one of these volumes. Napoleon may have considered Spain a side show, but as results turned out it was a bleeding ulcer. French losses here, combined with the 1812 campaign, placed a strain on the Empire which could not be overcome by even the best generalship. Any true student of the Napoleonic Wars should find these books and read them. They are essential to a complete understanding of the conflict.

This wonderfully affordable paperback edition makes available Volume V of Charles Oman's definitive history of the Peninsular War, which covers the turning point of the war. In early 1812, Napoleon withdrew some of his Imperial troops from Spain for the ill-fated invasion of Russia. The dispersal of the remaining French forces to hold down Spanish insurgents coincided with a buildup of the Anglo-Portuguese Army, enabling Wellington to go over to the offensive with his experienced and well-trained force.

However, the French had lost the initiative in the Peninsular War for good.
Oman includes a brief but fascinating account, perhaps particularly relevant for modern readers, of the challenges faced by the British Tory government in waging an expensive six year campaign to dislodge the French from the Iberian Peninsula. The British Whig Party, in opposition, decried every expense and casualty in favor of an immediate peace treaty with Napoleon. The effect of such a treaty prior to Napoleon's defeat in Russia would have been to concede control of Continental Europe to the French Emperor. The British Ministry withstood both Whig opposition and internal Tory dissension to persevere against Napoleon and to trust Wellington to fulfill the mission of his command in Spain.
Oman's command of his subject is masterful; his narrative is mature and confident. While the focus is on the operational level of war, Oman provides descriptive and occasionally thrilling vignettes of the critical battles. Product Description
The island of Balis sensational image was created by the tourists, artists, and scholars who visited the tiny nation between the two world wars. A Dutch colony from 1908, Bali was a source of revenue for the Dutch government, which began to develop its image as the ultimate vacation spot. The tourism industry spread the idea of Bali as a paradise in which noble, happy, spiritual Balineseall prodigiously creative artistslived in innocence. Sensual images of beautiful people on an enchanted isle unspoiled by modernity predominated. Bali also acquired a reputation as a homosexual paradise. A host of books and articles fed these images of Bali until it evolved into one of the most romantic stops on the tourist itinerary. The Balinese people, however, made little profit from the tourist traffic. This history of the development of tourism in Bali stretches from the Dutch occupation in 1906 to the Japanese occupation in 1942. After exhaustive research in published records and in unpublished letters, diaries, and oral histories left by many of the American and European visitors to the island as well as the Balinese residents, the author explores the reasons for Balis popularity among Westerners and their effects on the native culture.

yes,but!.......2003-06-12
The book was great, better than his last effort-"Two years living in a wine boda".He is very poetic and draws wonderful word pictures. It's every thing you need to know about Coopers hawks and more, except how to get rid of the damm things.I have an attic full of them, they bring dead things back to the house, they stay up late, bully other flying animals. Whats a person to do?
Great book for the Cooper's Enthusiast.......2003-02-11
This book will appeal to Cooper's Hawk enthusiasts and naturalists alike. A good read providing useable information related to this wonderfully efficient predator. His passion for the bird is obvious through the detailed and often poetic descriptions of his life experiences with this raptor. He is careful not to forget the wonderful econiche this bird occupies by providing details about the other wildlife in the Cross Timbers area as well. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with a curiousity about all things natural.
