Almost the family album.......2003-02-07

This book is very personal--my late mother- and father-in-law were two of the founding members of the Mill Reef Club (they are both buried on the island in St. Philip's Parish) and it's wonderful to study the old photos and see the genesis of one of the most beautiful places anywhere. Robertson (Happy) Ward created something unique and lovely in the club itself and in the houses--the open uncluttered living spaces, the soothing pastel colors and, always, the inviting views of the beach, the bougainvillea, the expanse of impossibly unique blue of Caribbean water. If there is a paradise, for me always it will be the remembered aspects of the club; the mornings under the huge thatched umbrella on the beach when everyone gathered to visit--periodically getting up to walk into the shallows to cool off. In the struts supporting that umbrella were stored flippers, snorkeling gear, forgotten sunglasses, suntan lotion, odds and ends. Residents and guests, visitors invariably found their way to the umbrella--an ever-elastic gathering that was the focal point of the farthest end of the beach from the club. Everyone made the long walk along the sand, back and forth to the club, admiring the houses fronting the water--those pastel creations that looked almost edible. It was an intimation of what heaven might be like. And this book offers portraits of the original members, insight into Ward's creative gifts, and a singular view of another time in another place.

An absolute INSULT!!!.......2002-09-20

I ordered this book hoping that it would provide some valuable insight into developing a recruiting strategy for our company. Instead I received a book that was only 50 pages long, with half the pages either blank or only half written on. The content of this book is worthless. There are "95" "pages" in this book, but the last fifty are blank except for "notes" written at the top. I wouldn't care about the length of the book if there had been any valuable content associated with it. This content, AT BEST should be a FREE PDF download on the author's website. To charge anything for this nonsense is criminal. My 13 year old could have written this book....and probably done a better job. Don't waste your money!

There were many elements to British Napoleonic naval success but one of the key factors was gunnery. Other countries developed different naval weapons to fit their maritime strategies. The French and Spanish systems developed on similar lines, while those of the Baltic navies tended to rely on smaller craft and weapons. Holland, during this period, was part of the French sphere of influence and this had an effect on the development of its naval weapons. This title describes the systems of all these countries as well as the fledgling navy of America, whose gunnery skills embarrassed the Royal Navy at the height of their dominance.

Napoleonic naval guns.......2005-06-28

Not much new information for anyone who has already studied this era,and I would think a bit confusing to someone who is new to it, since many of the descriptions for the gun photos are not with the correct guns. It is a good source of general information on british cannon.

Sails.......2004-06-14

This is the fist book of a series. So I shall evaluate it as such.

I liked that the author gave the caliber, bore, weight and barrel length of the British naval guns. (This information is readily available in most books on the subject). But I am a little bit peeved that he forgot to give the same information on the artillery for the French and Spanish navies. Though this may be in the next book of the series. At the same time I am a little bit bemused that he forgot the name for the long barreled musket used by the french, F 1, shown on page 31. It is called a Buccanneer.

I shall keep my full judgement until after I have seen the entire series.

Mr. Sutton captures the wonder of birding........2004-01-05

This book is not meant to be a field guide. Each bird's page is a description of Mr. Sutton's encounter with that bird in the wild. He captures the beauty, wonder, and excitement of birding. I realize there are some that want to make an "extreme sport" out of it, trying to see how many species one can identify in one day, by checking off your list and quickly moving on to the next one. If this is your style, then buy Peterson's. But if you are the sort of birder that can stand for an hour or more, hardly breathing, just watching and listening, then you will find this book a rich experience to savor again and again. I was very happy to find that it is still available.

I wanted to like the book, but was gravely disappointed. I was originally going to rate it two stars--I raised it to three because the author seems such a nice guy! The book consists of fifty sets of two facing pages, each set devoted to a bird. On the right is a painting, usually showing a side view of the bird and nothing else. On the left is a page of text on the bird, usually an anecdote about the author's experience with the species. Most of the stories are very dated, from the 1940s or 1950s. I find the book mildly amusing to leaf through when I'm bored, but it is no use as a reference, didn't challenge or inspire me, and I wouldn't dream of taking it into the field. There are much better uses for your reading dollar.
