Book Description

The architect of some of Southern California's most notable and spectacular gardens of the 1920's. This book reconstructs the making of nine of them, including the Harold Lloyd estate in Beverly Hills, the Andalusian garden of Archibald Young in Pasadena, and the Italian garden of Kirk Johnson in Montecito. The autobiographic first chapter gives an engaging account of Hanson's self training in the profession and his dealings with clients.

5 out of 5 stars Creating Gardens in Los Angeles in the 1920s.......2001-05-09

I love this book. The writing is totally conversational, effortless to read, yet full of insight and humor. A.E. Hanson practiced landscape architecture for many years in southern California, and during the 20s he became very successful creating gardens for wealthy clients. His biggest and most notable commission was the Harold Lloyd estate which he created (including hiring and directing the architect) over the course of several years before the depression.

Every landscape architect and landscape contractor will enjoy this book. His descriptions of the problems he faced, and the way he dealt with them, are amusing and inspiring. He describes, for instance, walking through a gulley in Benedict Canyon, a miserable eroded dry wash, and telling Harold Lloyd (who has just purchased it) that, "sure, no problem, we can put a golf course here" then going back to his car and sitting with his head in his hands for half an hour wondering how in the hell he was ever going to deliver on his promise. Needless to say, he delivered, and the story of how he did what he did makes a great story.

Everyone who has ever built anything big knows the huge effort required to carve beauty out of inanimate and uncooperative materials ( and dealing with clients, architects, and builders) . You will relate to A.E.'s story, and you will learn something.

A great book. Lots of black-and-white illustrations, many (if not most) from the period, illustrate the text very well. Like all Hennessy & Ingalls publications, it suffers a bit from mediocre printing, but it is a nice looking paper-back book and that's a small quibble. Well worth the price.

4 out of 5 stars John Barrington: Forgotten genius.......2000-07-28

John Barrington, an artist and photographer who studied at St Martin's School of Art in London as well as L'Ecoles des Beaux Arts in Paris, is perhaps the most seminal British photographers of the male nude. Beginning in 1948 and continuing almost to the 1990s, Barrington almost single-handedly created the British market in male physique photography. Much like Bob Mizer and his Atheltic Model Guild in the U.S.A., Barrington created and sold thousands of photographs in art, physique and gay magazines in the United Kingdom. Like Mizer, too, he was prosecuted numerous times for his art.

The 60 or so photographs included in this slim volume encompass Barrington's work over the last half-century. Barrington's philosophy is that the model takes precedence over the camera, the photographer or the dark-room technique. Barrington primarily focused on athletic models -- men who range from the trim-but-toned look to men verging on the boydbuilder type. His black and white photographs are somewhat static in their presentation, however; almost invariably, the men face forward, and are shot from knee to head. Barrington also used exclusively heterosexual models, to reduce the erotic response of both the model and the viewer.

Yet, Barrington's work is not simply of historical importance. Yes, many of these photographs typify the times -- emotionally as well as legally -- in which Barrington worked. But Barrington eschews the "living statue" philosophy. His models are often smiling and relaxed. They aren't unapproachable gods, they are real men whose distance (because of sexual orientation, body type, and beauty) is palpable but not off-putting. The setting of these photographs -- taken in the studio, in homes and in the out of doors -- also helps maintain a fresh, friendly sense in the images. The impression is that these aren't professional body-builders or models, these are actual men. What a difference from the posed, self-conscious posturing of more modern photographers!

This collection also contains African men, a welcome respite from the hairless, smooth white body that implies classicism and sculptural qualities.

"Kouros" is an invaluable introduction to John Barrington's immense body of work and his technique. Hopefully, this book will lead to more complete retrospectives into this, Britain's most important and historic photographer of the male nude.

This book has a lot of great information for the bookhunter. It covers the Midwest, and would be especially helpful for those that live there. My wife and I have travelled around and always bring this book to find hidden bookshops. The only problem with the book is that the occasional shop is no longer in existence or has moved, so call ahead of a visit as the book suggest. Any book lover would love this book!!

Truly a treasure map for the reader! Even if the book did not necessarily give a favorable review of the different book stores,it was a blast to seek some of these shops out. The main drawback to this book is it becomes dated when a tiny bookstore doesn't make it and shuts down. But I've been to some of the shops that ARE still open and loved them all! I was also able to find books that are waaayyy out of print. If you are looking for ignorant used book sellers to sell you a 1st edition "Gone With the Wind" forget it. Most book sellers in this manual are savvy when it comes to the trade. When I retire from my real world job and open my book store in 14 years, I hope to be listed in this book. Please keep revising and printing this one!

                    Book Description

The 1940s in Canada are crucial to the understanding of labour history in this country. Following the Depression, and sparked by the need to mobilize the workforce during the Second World War, this decade led to a restructuring of the relationship between labour and the state. In Harnessing Labour Confrontation, Peter S. McInnis examines the reformation of Canadian society and its industrial relations regime from the perspective of labour organizations and their supporters and from that of government and business. What results is a synthesis of labour and political history, which the author uses to analyze in a North American context the role of confrontation and heated debate in the formation of a national postwar compromise and in the birth of a modern welfare state.

Among the factors affecting the postwar compromises were, argues McInnis, the divided jurisdiction between federal and provincial governments, the return to gender-biased societal norms, a developing Cold War climate of national insecurity, and a promise of strong consumer purchasing power based on postwar wages and benefits packages. While some of the results of the 1940s compromise and the welfare state remains intact today, many of the political and social structures have deteriorated in the last two decades.

                        Book Description

Based on thirteen years of research, "FATHER AND CHILD REUNION: How To Bring The Dads We Need To The Children We Love" will force a re-examination of the circumstances in which a dad or a mom is best for children. For starters, some findings on children with single parents ….

                        • Children do better with single fathers than with single mothers. Both boys and girls are healthier and do better psychologically and academically, as well as socially.

                        • Even characteristics such as empathy are exhibited more by children brought up by single fathers.

                        • Single fathers experience less stress juggling children and work than do single mothers.

What family structures are most likely to be in the child's best interests? Dr. Farrell's findings suggest the following ranking:

                        (1) the intact family;
                        (2) shared parent-time (joint physical custody);
                        (3) primary father time;
                        (4) primary mother time.

While the intact family is the winner, Father and Child Reunion makes it clear why, if divorce cannot be prevented, children being primarily with their dads gives children more of both parents than when they are primarily with their mothers; reduces a mother's economic dependency on a man, and reduces men's ten times greater suicide rate after divorce.

Does Dr. Farrell conclude, then, that men are better at fathering than women are at mothering? No. But he does conclude that we have been waging a "War Against Fathers" - and mothers and children are among the losers.

Father and Child Reunion answers questions relevant to every family.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant book for ALL to read, not just fathers.......2006-11-01

That's because this book uses purely publicly available statistics, which can be checked by anyone with the time, to explode countless sexist anti-male myths that have built up over time, mainly due to a simple lack of opposition from men, who only have themselves to blame for their position. But men's cultural conditioning makes this completely understandable as they too have been at the mercy of forty years of unopposed feminist propaganda (whose manipulation of selected statistics, exposed in Warren Farrell's other books, when objectively viewed is morally no better than that of any totalitarian regime of the past), which has resulted in them being as uninformed in this area as women themselves, as seen by the number of men who gave this book a bad rating. I can only hope that this book may at least help free the minds of their sons to see what is really happening, even if their fathers' sexist conditioning has rendered them incapable of doing so. However, a simple intelligent analysis of those uncomfortable statistics which feminists love to avoid has brought many of their favourite myths to fall with a crash. It is not my intention to reproduce the most amazing facts in this review, as I would practically be reproducing the whole book, but whoever is reading this, man or woman, you owe it to yourself to read it. The message to men is - spend time with your children, and insist on your rights to see them if you're one of the 42% of men illegally hindered in seeing your children, and if possible try everything you can to obtain custody. This is because the more time you as a male parent spend with your child, the higher will be its IQ and school grades, the lower its chances of committing suicide, being abused, becoming an adult child abuser, rapist, drug abuser, criminal or murderer, or suffering from clinical depression, even if you earn LESS than your ex-wife. And this is true for boys AND girls - you owe it to them to be there, if only to ensure them better futures, and longer, happier and healthier lives. Consider that single moms are 24 times more likely to kill their children than single men, although there are only 5 times as many single moms, and that most family murders are mothers killing sons, and one gets a truly frightening picture of the media filter which currently exists that downplays anything that contradicts women's pure image while putting the spotlight on men who've only been ACCUSED of crime.

This book will certainly change many of your perspectives, and make you realise how warped they were before reading it. I would encourage everyone who has read this book to pass it on, mention it to others, or give it as a gift, and help the wonderful Dr Farrell in his quest against ignorance. It will be a long hard journey with many a struggle, but at long last we have a man who is man enough to really get the ball rolling. And, as every intelligent reader well knows, the attacks on Dr Farrell's character in book reviews, which I've been sorry to read here, amount to nothing other than an admission of defeat as far as an intelligent criticism of the book's content is concerned. You're really scoring points for the other side.

1 out of 5 stars Wonder if Farrell still thinks incest is positive.......2006-07-05

I dunno, I'm kind of skeptical about taking fatherly advice from a guy who thinks that incest is just a sign of a repressed society, and who's gone on record saying that date rape used to be just a good time. Hm, a good time for whom, one wonders?

Farrell likes to leave out certain facts. Like, for example, his complaints about how men die sooner and work more dangerous jobs. The former is proof of what, exactly? The latter is disingenuous---men work more dangerous jobs from wihch women are excluded because these jobs tend to pay better. Then the danger is used as an excuse to keep women out of those jobs because the little ladies need protection, for which men of the Farrell type expect gratitude. Farrell mentions at some point that almost no women died in the Viet Nam war. This is becuase women weren't allowed to FIGHT in the Viet Nam war at all. And so forth and so on.

5 out of 5 stars Not for Man Haters.......2005-12-09

I find Farrell's books and perspective quite refreshing in this day of political correctness-it's obvious that some in the feminist community are foaming at the mouth due to his books. One can only imagine the spittle that needed to be wiped from their keyboard after their review was punched in.

If you peruse the negative reviews, you'll see some of these reviewers have posted multiple critical reviews of other books that dare to be sympathetic to the male of the human species.

Their perspective can very eaily be distilled down to: men are the root of all evil, women are all that is just, peaceful, graceful, artistic, nurturing, etc. etc. One can only wonder what kind of lala land these people live in and what kind of medications they forgot to take.

                        What tripe and nonsense!

                        1 out of 5 stars Warren's World.......2005-11-05

In Warren's World men can do no wrong - and women no right.
Farrell misses an obvious connection between absent fathers and delinquent children - that the childen are likely to have inherited traits from these fathers. When good fathers die, single-mother households do not end up with delinquent children so inherited traits must be considered.

Lie: 'Many wild animal species boast dedicated dads.' In fact, male parental care is very rare in nature. The wolf, like the few others, is monogamous - and those loving pups he feeds are not averse to chasing off or even killing him when they are older.
Farrell also avoids Jeffrey Masson's (who he quotes re. the wolf) points about human males being amongst the worst fathers. Masson also writes about the numbers of infanticidal males in nature.

Farrell is a champion manipulator of statistics, for example he pushes the belief that single fathers are better for children than single mothers. A 1989 study by Richard Gelles found that single mothers were 71% more violent toward their children than married ones, especially when poor. Single fathers, regardless of income, were 420% more violent than married ones.

So, ONLY 2300 girls per 100,000 are sexually abused by their biological father compared to 17000 by a stepfather. No problem with biological dads, then!
Farrell prefers to concentrate on false accusations of sexual abuse. He quotes a Dr Richard Gardner's methods for proving false allegations. Gardner wrote an article, 'A Theory About The Variety of Human Sexual Behavior', in which he states that pedophilia is unjustifiably punished and needs greater tolerance, sympathy and respect!

We know from Farrell's 'Why Men Are The Way They Are' that Farrell himself is impressed by men who risk sex with a child. And, if nothing else, Farrell provides an excellent guide for sex abusers to avoid detection and conviction.

Farrell also includes the lie that middle-aged men initiate adolescent girls in sex in some tribal societies.
If all this wasn't enough, Farrell makes a laughable case absolving males from the need to use a condom.
His biological understanding is clearly poor as he thinks the fetus' blood is isolated through the Eustachian tube - which is in the ear.

He thinks that in Dickensian England the father went to prison for the family's debts because it was his responsibiliy to earn money when, in fact, the wife was deemed not to exist legally and she was his property along with anything she might own or earn.

I do agree that paternity tests are a fine but I look forward to another paternity certainty DNA test that will show if a man is likely to 'cuckold' his wife by deserting her and the children for a new wife and children. It's too late then for the wife to learn she has had her children by the wrong man and experiences that 'deepest level of betrayal' and 'feels raped' - just like a cuckolded male, in fact.

Warren's World is full of lies, manipulation, ignorance and a dubious attitude towards sex with underage girls. It is a concern that he manages to gain the support he does.

Yes we want good fathers but Warren's World is not where we will find them.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ for all fathers!.......2005-10-20

A MUST READ for all fathers! Drawing on evidence from court cases, law enforcement records, national statistics, and therapeutic case studies, Dr. Farrell shows us in easy to understand language how dads are often made to look like the enemy. Finally, an insightful author who makes a superb case for creating equal opportunity for men as parents. Share this book with every father you know.

The final demise of Jacobitism amid the slaughter of the Highland clans on a cold and damp Culloden Moor in April 1746 is undoubtedly one of the most famous battles in British military history. It has also been, until recently, one of the least understood from both a military and political perspective. In this modern and highly detailed account, this book combines a thorough understanding of 18th century tactics, an intimate knowledge of the battlefield itself and a scandalously underused archive of contemporary material from both sides to provide a detailed, accurate and dramatic account of this controversial battle.

The work reviews the final battle in the campaign of Bonnie Prnce Charlie (Stuart) to regain the British threone from the Hanoverian line. The Authors describe the opposing sides and political situation well. The battle is done with great care and leaves the reader with a sense of being there. I can best describe it as similar to the experience of watching the movie Culoden nearly forty years ago on PBS.The period has always fascinated me and I have continually searched for works on the topic. For many years John Prebble was the only source. It is nice to find good works at a fair price available.

In 1991, Osprey Campaign volume #12 by Peter Harrington covered the Culloden campaign of 1745-1746. Now eleven years later, Osprey recovers the same ground with campaign volume #106 Culloden Moor by Stuart Reid. Aside from the questionable logic of re-doing the same topics when so many other topics in military history remain neglected, Osprey has at least picked the right person to revisit this infamous campaign. Stuart Reid, is an expert on the subject of Culloden and author of the ground-breaking accounts, Like Hungry Wolves and 1745: A Military History of the Jacobite Rising. Reid's narrative is efficient and professional, and the graphic presentation methods of the campaign series have certainly improved over the past decade. As to whether Reid's volume is better than Harrington's, I would say that both are good campaign summaries but they approach the subject from different angles. Harrington's earlier volume dealt with the '45 as a whole, spending considerable effort discussing the battles of Prestonpans and Falkirk and only 41% on the Battle of Culloden itself. Reid's account is more squarely focused on Culloden with 60% devoted to the battle, and much less to events preceding the battle. Unlike Harrington, Reid does not even bother to discuss the flight of the Pretender or the brutal mop-up operations. Therefore, Reid's account contains more battle narrative than Harrington's, but Harrington provides more background material on the campaign as a whole.

Culloden Moor 1746 follows the standard Osprey campaign series format and begins with a short introduction and campaign chronology, followed by short but well-written sections on opposing commanders, opposing armies and opposing plans. Reid includes orders of battle for the Dutch and Hessian auxiliary troops that served under British command, as well as the main Jacobite and British forces that fought at Culloden. The campaign narrative itself, which covers the period January-April 1746, is 55 pages long. Reid concludes with a brief aftermath section, notes on further reading and comments on the battlefield today. There are five 2-D maps (Major troop movements in Britain, operations around Inverness, the Jacobite night march, initial dispositions at Culloden, and Culloden moor today) and three 3-D "Bird's Eye View" maps (Culloden opening moves, the Highland charge and the destruction of the Jacobite army). There are also three full color battle scenes: the Highland charge at Prestonpans, The Royal Scots at Culloden and the Royal Ecossois at Culloden.

Reid makes a number of very good points about the weaknesses of British cavalry in the reconnaissance role, the Jacobite oatmeal stockpile in Inverness that was critical for their survival as an army, the operational choices facing the Jacobites in April 1746 (run and disperse, defend or attack) and the cautious but professional tactics of the British. The author also makes insightful comment that the British infantry volleys at Culloden almost certainly caused far greater casualties to the Jacobites than the artillery barrage, which he reckons was shorter and less destructive than generally claimed. Indeed, the reader is left with little doubt that Reid has mastered the historical details of this subject.

The only complaint with Reid's narrative applies equally to his other works on Culloden: a tendency to downplay British atrocities. Nowhere in these pages do we find mention of "Butcher Cumberland," the notorious accolade for the British commander who presided over one of the grimmer chapters in British military history. Reid's bias is the standard device for those who wish to avoid dealing with black pages in their country's history: deny, minimize, ignore. According to Reid, John Prebble, author of the classic Culloden in 1961, was too inclined to accept atrocity allegations at face value. Reid denies the most vicious atrocity stories about Culloden - such as the alleged burning of Jacobite wounded in a farmhouse and bayoneting of wounded - but concedes that "isolated incidents" by the "vestry men" (British short-term conscripts) probably occurred. Minimize: it wasn't the British army that did these atrocities, but if any occurred it must have been the draftees not the regulars. Furthermore, the "everybody was doing approach" is employed by suggesting that other countries dealt just as harshly with rebels (this is really the "lowest common denominator" approach in suggesting that one's army merely need not act worse than any other army - say, the Turks - rather than setting any kind of higher standard). Then, Reid has the audacity to state that, "the bitter legacy of those punitive expeditions [that followed the Battle of Culloden], justified as they were..." Murder and rape are justified? Readers should consult Prebble's account to get a better understanding of the year-long killing, raping and looting spree that the British army undertook along the Great Glenn in reprisal for the Jacobite Uprising. In particular, Prebble - unlike Reid - notes that the British were so indiscriminate in their reprisals that they often brutalized loyalist Scots who had supported the crown against the rebels. Even if Prebble's account is too biased against the British as Reid claims, there is no doubt that the British punitive measures were very harsh indeed. Furthermore, American readers should consider the brutal repressive measures that this same British army would use to combat American rebels thirty years later; British regulars bayoneted many unarmed American soldiers in the Gowanus Swamps outside New York in 1776 and Banastre Tarleton's atrocities in the south were infamous. Reid's efforts to whitewash this sorry chapter in British military history are just as offensive as German historians attempting to minimize the activities of the SS or Japanese historians the Bataan Death March.

The fact is that Culloden was a seminal event in Scottish history. Reid's account is essentially an operational account that - while very good in the military realm - leaves out the true social, political and psychological context of this battle. The British used Culloden and the suppression of the Jacobites to crush any trace of Scottish independence for over a century and in that unstated sense, it was a national tragedy.

                                      Book Description

This book attempts a comparative analysis of the condition of Blacks in the new world diaspora. The editors contend that this diaspora cannot be fully understood apart from politics and social structure, or apart from the broad historical background of the political economy of plantation society, capitalism and their profound structural legacies. It brings a focused perspective to a previously neglected group of people in different nation-states who labor under very real social and political handicaps. Ultimately the themes of persistence and resilience are the focus of these essays. Contents: and Contributors: "The Formation of Black Society in the Diaspora"-James Walvin, Subhas Ramcharan, Calvin Holder, James W. St. G. Walker; "Reflections on the Experience of Blacks in the Diaspora"-Pierre L. Van Den Berghe, Aubrey W. Bonnett, George Beckford; "Structural Aspects of Discrimination: Colonialism, Racism and Economic Relations"-Frances Henry, Arnold Gibbons, Priestly, Suzanne Michael; "Aspects of Black Culture in the Diaspora"-Abiola Irele, G.
