Book Description

The Bra. The Box Kite. The Cat. The Milk Carton. The Reclining Picasso. These are the playful names given to the eccentric beach houses of Andrew Geller. Built in the 1950s and 1960s, these whimsical vacation homes reflected the idea of summer leisure for a generation more concerned with fun on the beach than ostentatious display. For clients in the Hamptons, the Jersey shore, and in New England, Geller built dozens of houses, most of wood and most on modest budgets. Geller, who worked with Raymond Loewy and directed the design of such modernist landmarks as the Lever House in New York, combined a modern interest in light, breeze, and functional living with playful form-making. These spirited houses, many shown here for the first time through vintage photographs and drawings, still delight today and will inspire anyone interested in beach house living.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An appealing architectural survey.......2003-11-13

Architect Andrew Geller's quirky and unusual beach houses built in the 1950s and 1960s are profiled in Beach Houses: Andrew Geller, a fine title surveying these whimsical vacation homes. Geller built dozens of houses on modest budgets, along the East Coast: Beach Houses: Andrew Geller combines black and white sketches and photos with color photos and a running discussion of Geller's artistic and practical challenges. An appealing architectural survey.

4 out of 5 stars A little known pioneer in modern architecture.......2003-07-03

I have known Mr. Geller and parts of his family for over 15 years. This book can only begin to explain the genius involved in the designs I have seen. I have stayed in a home of Mr. Geller's design which was absolutely remarkable in its use of open space while still allowing for privacy in a home that at the time was shared by 7 people.

I am thrilled that this book finally gives some long overdue credit to one of the pioneers of modern residential architecture.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book about a fantastic architect!.......2003-06-01

I love this book. It's beautifully illustrated and well written. Certainly a must for anyone interested in modernist architecture second home design!

            Book Description

            In the twentieth century the human body was explored, repaired, remodeled, and reinvented in ways that would have amazed previous generations. A major role in this process has been played by photography, which allows us to see the body with new eyes, down to the minutest internal structures. Science and technology are one means of photographically imaging the body and its potential. Art is another, and many of the greatest photographers have taken the body as their subject matter. The Century of the Body presents chronologically one hundred photos that represent all the significant genres of body-centered photography, in both art and science. Anthropology, criminology, physiology, anatomy, medicine, dance, sport, photojournalism, fashion, the nude, body art, and other lesser-known but important fields are featured, each represented by the most innovative photographers of their day. The greats of scientific and technological imagemaking, notably Lennart Nilsson, Pietro Motta, and Ralph Hutchings, are included. So, too, are the leading art photographers of the century: Alfred Stieglitz, Man Ray, Brassai, Edward Weston, Imogen Cunningham, Bill Brandt, Lee Friedlander, and Robert Mapplethorpe. The Musee de l'Elysee in Lausanne, one of the world's foremost photography museums, has compiled this extraordinary book to celebrate some of modern photography's finest achievements. Essays by the curators of the museum, including commentaries on every photograph, survey the full range of twentieth-century body-related imagery, focusing on the radical shifts in attitudes to the body that have taken place since 1900. The images, magnificently reproduced in duotone and color, stand as a lasting memorial to the finest photographic artists and scientists of the past one hundred years. 115 photographs in duotone and in color.

            5 out of 5 stars Artistic, Commercial, Political and Scientific Body Views.......2001-07-05

            Review Summary: This book and the exhibition it documents convey a stunning awareness of how photographing the body has evolved in the last 100 years. The essays and commentaries on the 100 works are excellent for describing the movements involved as well as the photographers. For most people, this will be a better book to borrow and read from the library rather than to purchase for permanent use. Many of the book's images involve pornography, horrible suffering, disfigurement, and other unsettling subjects that you will want to be moved by but probably not linger over.

            Reader Caution: The images in this book would exceed an R rating if the book's content were in a motion picture.

            Review: Photography and views of the human body have shifted enormously in the last 100 years. This extremely interesting book does a great job of exploring those shifts. It also conjectures forward into the world in which the combination of mastering genetics and body reshaping methods (like plastic surgery) will provide even more choice. The book will be of most interest to those who are not very familiar with the history of photography since the images and essays cover little new ground.

            The essay is extremely thorough and interesting in explaining the book's themes which are:

            Flesh -- the naked body to appeal to the prurient rather than the artistic

            Microcosm -- microscopic images of the body's interior

            Gaze -- the public part of the body, especially the face and eyes

            Memory -- the aid to the mind's recollection

            Icon -- the idealized body

            Form -- the artistic nude

            Pain -- the suffering body

            Politics -- meanings and values are contested

            Enquiry -- scientific investigation

            Fiction -- images, dreams, and fantasies

            Macrocosm -- a single human body in relation to the universe.

            My favorite images in the book were mostly old favorites:

            Man Ray, 1924, Violin d'Ingres;

            Imogen Cunningham, 1932, Nude;

            Sasha Stone, 1933, Study of the Human Body;

            Leni Riefenstahl, 1936, Jesse Owens;

            Edward Weston, 1936, Nude;

            Louise Dahl-Wolfe, 1948, Nude in the Desert;

            Gerhard Kiesling, 1952, Miners;

            Don McCullen, 1969, Albino Boy in a Camp of 900 Dying Children, Biafra;

            Nick Ut, 1972, Napalm Bomb Attack, Vietnam;

            Lennart Nilsson, 1973, A Human Foetus at Three Months;

            Hermut Newton, 1981, Sie kommen (naked and dressed), Paris;

            Robert Mapplethorpe, 1982, Lisa Lyon.

            I suspect that the book would have worked better if it had narrowed its focus to a single theme. Perhaps such works will follow.

            Those who see their favorite photographs in this book will often be a little disappointed that their size and reproduction are a little on the smallish side and below top grade.

            After you use these images and essays to capture a better sense of what the body has been all about, perhaps you could take a moment to think about what your body means to you. How can you create a more positive connection with your body? How can you draw more strength from it? How can you enjoy being at one with your body?

            Draw upon images of what is . . . to create plans to build what is better for all!

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent, diverse compilation of body images.......2001-03-17

            Editor William A. Ewing has put together a well-structured presentation of photoworks taken from exhibitions in Lisbon (1999) and Lausanne (2000). I was as impressed with the organization of this book as I was with the photographic artwork itself.

            The foreword gives a nice explantion of the how the book tries to capture the essense of the European exhibition, and is followed by a dozen or so pages chronicling the evolution of photographic science and human body photography through the 1900's. Mr. Ewing, who is Director of the Musée de l'Elysée in Lausanne, definitely knows his stuff; this is interesting reading.

            The one hundred photos (all b/w except for a handful) are displayed in chronological order, and in much the same way as a museum would: photograph on the right-hand page; title and credit on the left. A major plus is the insightful commentary about the artists and their photographic styles which accompanies each photo credit. In keeping with the gallery presentation, thirteen themes are evidenced in this collection, the most prominent being "Expression," "Form," "Politics," "Fiction," and "Flesh."

            "The Century of the Body" portrays many photographic genres: Pictorialism, Modernism, Surrealism, body art, fashion and even endoscopic photography. Noteworthy contributors include Stieglitz, Imogen Cunningham, Man Ray, Weston, Avedon and Mapplethorpe. Every image made me look a long time; none were lewd or offensive. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in photographic style, or simply . . . art.

            5 out of 5 stars REVIEW.......2001-01-31

            I really liked this book. My wife also liked this book. Thank you Mr. William A. Ewing!

              This book provides an excellent blend of childlike whimsy and adult sophistication, and I laugh out loud whenever I read it. The interlocking stories are ambitious and a lot of fun to come to grips with, and there are more great moments than I can count. Highly recommended!

              Jay Stephens, here. All these review spaces were blank, so I'm going to start the ball rolling myself.

              The ROCKABYE BOOK is one of my best collections. Nominated for three Eisner Awards and a Harvey. It stars JETCAT, who went on to become a cartoon star on Nickelodeon TV... now she doesn't return my calls... ;)

              Here's what THE COMICS JOURNAL said in their review,

              "If Hanna-Barbera delt with existential angst and deconstructionalism, the end result would probably resemble the Land of Nod, the new comic from Jay Stephens. I sincerely doubt, however, that they would do anywhere near as good a job as he has. Make no mistake, this book is quite an achievement."

              3 out of 5 stars Good, but don't expect the further adventures of Nod and co........2001-08-11

              The Land of Nod Treasury is the funniest comic I've ever read. The Land of Nod Rockabye Book contains only 2 stories set in the Land of Nod. Both are up to the standards of the Land of Nod Treasury. The rest is mixed, but never as good as the Land of Nod. Space Ape Number 8 is the best of the rest, but once again, not nearly as good as the content from the preceding volume. The villains in Jetcat are good, but the rest are lame. Tuttenstein is pretty bad, and the Bug Patrol resembles parts of the Land of Nod, but like the volume on the whole, lacks the absurdity and frenetic energy that The Land of Nod possessed and made it great.

                    5 out of 5 stars Excellent historical insight.......2001-01-10

                    This book is more than just interesting quotes. I gained much more insight into the history of the American labor movement. People's words can be very effective in giving later generations a sense of what really happened. This book offers much to think about. I was struck by the contrasts of courage and pain, strength and cynicism that were evoked by the quotations of real people.

                    This is a labor quotation sourcebook and provides an intriguing survey of issues of work and labor drawn from the experiences of the American labor movement. Writers and speakers will find this packed with quotes organized by topic, from civil rights, economics, politics and the law to the corporate world and unemployment. An excellent reference.

                    5 out of 5 stars inspirational.......2000-12-11

                    This book is a wonderful source of inspirational quotations. Through the words of plain folks and great thinkers, you are continually reminded of the spirit of hope and the advancement of the state of working people. The first chapter, This Working Life, has quotes beginning with the Bible and continuing with voices throughout history and from all over the world. The other 16 chapters are more prominently by Americans and about the labor movement. There is a lot more here than quotations. There are short biographies of labor leaders. Photographs and cartoons illustrate issues like unemployment, global competition, and working conditions. The book is a great reminder of how far the average worker has come in the last 100 years, how the fight for a decent living never ends, and how these issues effect all of us. Union members will find the resource directories helpful in finding many more information sources. Overall, a very well thought out book that's captivating and a good resource.

                    5 out of 5 stars learn a lot.......2000-12-05

                    This book delivers a lot more than a collection of quotations about work and the labor movement. Quotations are divided into 17 chapters that cover work issues in everything from Politics and Union Organizing to professional Sports. There's 19th century drawings, photographs and current cartoons that address the issues covered by the quotations. Visually, the book looks like a labor of love--each page is outlined with quotation graphics, and drawings and photos are handled well. To summarize, this book is a great source for quotations; they're easy to track down through 3 different indexes. But what is surprizing is all the history that's presented through the quotations, citations, author comments, and biographies of labor leaders. It's great fun and a very rewarding book. I savored it a few pages at a time.

                    This book is deep and complex. One has to read it to grasp and understand. Anyway, Diop essentially divides the world into two cradles - the Northern (patriarchal in character), and Southern (Black and matriarchal). He clearly demonstrates that matriarchy could only be found in Black populations, specifically in Africa, or other places subject to Black influence. European and Asiatic societies have a patriarchal regime because of the demanding nomadic lifestyle in the Eurasian steppes. The sedentary life of Blacks is what fueled great respect for women...the Black woman being the inventor of agriculture. Children often got their names from the mother's lineage. He clearly argues his facts by explaining dowry, fire worship, cremation, amazonism, etc. He gives thorough examples throughout.

                    This is not just another feel-good book from a zealous Afrocentrist. This is true scholarship! I am sure all readers will be convinced when they finish reading it. Islam, colonization, and Christianity have truely changed the Black world in terms of its matriarchal character. We should respect our women. In European and Asian history, you will never find anything resembling the armed Sudanese Kandake, the Angolan Nzinga, the Egyptian Hatshetsup and Tiye,...the list is endless. Perhaps it's matriarchy that fueled our ancient societies to become world powers in our glory days. We can only imagine. Can Africa ever really gain what it's lost? That's the question. In a way, I feel that Diop asks the same question.

                          Book Description

                          Outposts of the War for Empire is being reissued in hardcover format, reproducing the original 1985 edition, to mark the 250th anniversary of the War for Empire, perhaps better known as the French and Indian War.

                          Much has been written on the events of the fifteen years from 1749 to 1764, a conflict that decided the ownership of most of the North American continent. Some historians have addressed the politics of this great conflict; others have focused on the daily lives of the people on the frontier and the ravages they endured in war. In Outposts of the War for Empire, Charles Stotz brings his specialized knowledge as an architect and architectural historian to tell and show what colonial forts looked like, where they stood, who built them and why, what materials were used in building them, and how they varied in design to fit different military purposes. Stotz describes twenty-two forts built by the French, the English, and the colonists in Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania --from tiny outposts built by the Ohio Company at Wills Creek on the North Branch of the Potomac to the fortresses that guarded the Ohio at Pittsburgh, first the French Fort Duquesne and later the English Fort Pitt. Using mathematically accurate perspective drawings, he shows exactly how the most important of the forts were constructed and documents their twentieth-century reconstruction.

                          Through narrative and illustration, Charles Morse Stotz creates a unique and important perspective on the War for Empire, a world war that had profound and lasting influence on the frontier region of western Pennsylvania.

                                New Zealand, noted life scientist Jared Diamond has remarked, offers science an approximation of studying life on other planets, because the islands of New Zealand lie so distant from other landmasses that their flora and fauna are markedly unlike those of other places. Of particular interest to biologists is the kea, Nestor notabilis, a small parrot found only in the alpine beech forests of South Island, and one that has evolved in curious ways. A survivor of the great wave of extinctions that occurred when humans arrived in New Zealand a thousand years ago, the kea has long been hunted, especially by European ranchers who found it a danger to their livestock--for, as Judy Diamond and Alan Bond write, while the kea once preferred to feed on insect larvae, it shifted its dietary habits with the arrival of new food sources. This transformation, the authors suggest, speaks to the bird's adaptability and intelligence. With the change to carrion eating, the kea's population grew, although it is now again in decline. And with that change, the authors write, new characteristics emerged, so that kea groups are now male-dominated, aggressive, and hierarchically organized, unusually so for an avian species. Diamond and Bond have conducted long-scale fieldwork among keas in their native habitat, and their well-written study speaks beyond the description of one species to the benefits--and limitations--of evolutionary flexibility in general. --Gregory McNamee

                                Book Description

                                The kea, a crow-sized parrot that lives in the rugged mountains of New Zealand, is considered by some a playful comic and by others a vicious killer. Its true character is a mystery that biologists have debated for more than a century. Judy Diamond and Alan Bond have written a comprehensive account of the kea's contradictory nature, and their conclusions cast new light on the origins of behavioral flexibility and the problem of species survival in human environments everywhere.
                                New Zealand's geological remoteness has made the country home to a bizarre assemblage of plants and animals that are wholly unlike anything found elsewhere. Keas are native only to the South Island, breeding high in the rigorous, unforgiving environment of the Southern Alps. Bold, curious, and ingeniously destructive, keas have a complex social system that includes extensive play behavior. Like coyotes, crows, and humans, keas are "open-program" animals with an unusual ability to learn and to create new solutions to whatever problems they encounter.
                                Diamond and Bond present the kea's story from historical and contemporary perspectives and include observations from their years of field work. A comparison of the kea's behavior and ecology with that of its closest relative, the kaka of New Zealand's lowland rain forests, yields insights into the origins of the kea's extraordinary adaptability. The authors conclude that the kea's high level of sociality is a key factor in the flexible lifestyle that probably evolved in response to the alpine habitat's unreliable food resources and has allowed the bird to survive the extermination of much of its original ecosystem. But adaptability has its limits, as the authors make clear when describing present-day interactions between keas and humans and the attempts to achieve a peaceful coexistence.

                                Forced to read this for a project - couldn't. I made up stuff rather than finishing this. Not too pleasant experience. go buy a parot instead. Its probably less anoying.

                                1 out of 5 stars Not so good.......2001-09-12

                                As a naturalist and native of New Zealand, I was eager to purchase this book about one of my favorite New Zealand creatures, the kea. I must, however, express my disappointment. This book is not only flawed in places (especially concerning the kea's behavior), but it is also exceedingly dry.

                                1 out of 5 stars Slow reading.......2001-08-20

                                The kea may be an interesting bird, but this book is not. As painfully tedious as a college textbook, this book lacks personality. If you need information on the kea, stick to your internet browser and spare yourself the time.

                                5 out of 5 stars A great book about a fascinating parrot........1999-10-31

                                A fascinating book about a fascinating parrot. New Zealand's kea is a highly social parrot that survives through its ability to learn instead of relying on instinct. It is the world's only alpine parrot and the only parrot that preys on sheep. Based on extensive field study, this book offers an indepth look at kea society and evolution. Although it is written by scientists, it is both easy and entertaining to read. It should appeal to parrot lovers, ornithologists, and anyone interested in island evolution and ecosystems in general.
