4 out of 5 stars The District.......2001-10-31

This book is wonderfully funny and full of life. It really shows the colourful characters that exist in Cape Town and their amazing community spirit. In the face of immense adversity the characters in this book keep their infectious sense of humour and light hearted outlook on life. If you have lived in Cape Town be prepared for a roller coaster ride of emotions and memories!

4 out of 5 stars "End of an Era: The Destruction of District Six".......2000-07-08

Rive chronicles the establishment of two houses in District Six, Cape Town. Rive recreates the neighborhood of his youth in which con artists, prostitutes and throw-aways of apartheid South Africa survive and thrive despite poverty and racism. Each vignette, no matter how criminally absurd, captures the liveliness and sense of community found in District Six during its heyday.

        Book Description

The book is a sociolinguistic case study of District Six, an inner-city neighbourhood in Cape Town characterized by language mixing and switching of English and Afrikaans. Its early inhabitants included indigenous people, freed slaves of African and Asian origin, and immigrants from Europe and elsewhere. The ravages of apartheid affected the residents' attitudes towards their languages in various ways, which are described. The book examines the norms and practices regarding language choice for various functions and domains in the only surviving sector of District Six. It also contains detailed analyses of extended bilingual conversations showing a range of social, linguistic and discourse features. Of particular interest is the paradoxical polarization and blending of the two languages. They are strongly polarized symbolically and functionally, yet they are also habitually blended in vernacular speech through lexical borrowing and intrasentential language switching. This paradox has interesting implications for the construction of individual, community and language identity.

          Book Description

This is a literary biography of one of South Africa's most eminent men of letters, Justin Alexander La Guma, who is better known as Alex La Guma and is one of the twentieth century's most prolific, eloquent, and courageous writers. Although Pointer gives some attention to La Guma's years as a journalist, he mainly focuses on La Guma's novelette, A Walk in the Night, and his novels, And a Threefold Cord, The Stone Country, In the Fog of the Season's End, and Time of a Butcherbird.

By engaging in an interpretation, analysis, and critique of the ideology that informs the themes, images, and techniques in La Guma's writing, Pointer deals with the worldview of the "Colored" or Mixed-Race community, which La Guma belonged to, was proud of, and protrayed in his work. Most importantly, Pointer notes that the implicit question in La Guma's work is: What is the relevance of African Nationalism or Pan-Africanism to those who have embraced "Coloredness" as a valid and viable status in the race-based political ideologies of South Africa?

This book turns our attention to a man whose work helped to expose Apartheid and to extol the noble struggles of those who opposed one of the most hateful, white supremacist, and racist systems the world has ever known. It is about a man who turned personal and collective abuse and pain into art, risked his life, and suffered exile from his homeland to create works of enduring value.

This is a fantastic little book. I bought three of them - two for the kids and one for me. It really does teach you how to draw a horse - it looks like a little kids book but it can be helpful fun for kids of all ages. I always wanted to know how to draw a horse! :)

5 out of 5 stars Horse drawing the easy way!.......2000-05-06

What a wonderful book for a child aged 5-10 to learn to draw horses! The simple uncluttered pictures even encouraged this mom to try. It is one of a series printed by Reader's Digest Kids books.

The focus of the book is to draw the basic shapes of the horse. In the corner of each page is a highlighted box that shows you the part you need to be drawing. The overall picture is on the same page and it shows you where to put it. It also shows you the horse coming together. Your child will follow the story that comes together at the end of their drawing.

I would easily recommend this book to more people but it will be hard to get--it is out of print!

                      Book Description

Though they are largely unknown, sculptor, draughtsman and painter David Smith took photographs of great depth, beauty and precision throughout his career--from 1931 until his death in 1965. The large part of these images can be divided into two categories: the photographs of assemblages of found objects from the early and middle 1930s that were conceived as artworks themselves, and the pictures, taken mostly after 1945, that documented Smith's own sculpture. The photographs of his mature works are interpretive documents. Every sculpture, no matter how large or small, was photographed, often repeatedly, in different seasons and lighting conditions, and from different vantage points. In the 1960s, Smith also turned his camera to the figure. The images from this lifelong project are aesthetic statements in their own right and give new insight into Smith's artistic evolution. A pitch-perfect selection is collected here.

4 out of 5 stars Cute cartoons from an admirer of Rush Limbaugh.......1999-01-10

These adorable cartoons feature a zombie-like father (Bil), his shapely but enigmatic spouse (Thel), their genius-level no. 1 son (Billy), the precociously coquettish daughter (Dolly), their second son with reddish and hypnotically wavy hair (Jeffy), the inarticulate baby of the family (PJ). Thel and the kids are depicted as having melon-like heads. Dogs Barfy and Sam and cat Kittykat round out the household. Present in spirit are (1) Not Me, (2) Ida Know, and (3) Dead Grandpa. Present in spirit but not shown are Uncle Roy and the shapely Ms. Bird. In this book, Jeffy's droll antics with a sack of nuts are featured, as, on a camping trip, he tries to keep the family tent from leaving its appointed position. Caution: certain scenes in the book may be unsuitable for younger viewers. Kittykat's habitual means of slaking his or her thirst in particular are questionable at best.

                          Book Description

Few decisions made by today's organization are as highly visible, as expensive, and as long-lasting as the ones it makes about its physical facilities and properties. Because downsizing, out-sourcing, and networking have transformed organizational boundaries, and because advances in telecommunications and "virtuality" are changing almost everything about how companies occupy space, managers in every area of business are being forced to radically rethink the physical aspects of their companies.

In Strategy and Place, real estate strategy expert Martha O'Mara presents a framework for making strategic decisions about how organizations should occupy space when they are no longer tied to a specific place by the physical tools of work. In this groundbreaking work, based on cutting-edge research at companies such as Digital Equipment Corporation, Pacific Bell, Lever Brothers, Merrill Lynch, and Fidelity Investments, O'Mara presents a much-needed guide for thinking strategically about corporate real estate and facilities management and how to implement the right strategic plan once it's been formulated.

Strategy and Place outlines three main approaches to real estate and facilities management decision-making: Incrementalism, in which only short-term commitments to space are made and capital expenditures are kept to a minimum; Standardization, where control over design and management procedures is rigidly maintained through centralized decision-making; and Value-Based planning, in which organizational values and corporate culture are integral parts of all design-related decisions, and procedures are flexible enough to meet the needs of the individual parts of the organization. In this clearly written and insightful work, O'Mara explains the advantages and disadvantages of each approach and shows how to apply them appropriately.

5 out of 5 stars Places do matter - read this book!.......1999-10-11

I am a facility planning consultant and have looked at practically every book about aligning the built environment with business needs. "Strategy and Place" will be the one book I will be recommending to my clients because of its broad and deep coverage of the strategic and organizational issues which impact facility decision making. O'Mara clearly describes the numerous ways in which facility resources enhance organizational vitality. Its most significant contribution is a description how business uncertainity impacts decision making. A must read for anyone who has a part in formulating facility strategies.

                                    Book Description

This major new textbook provides a concise introduction to employment and industrial relations. Unlike many other textbooks, this adopts a comparative approach, examining the changing nature of employment practices in relation to the processes of globalization, and engaging critically with the literature on Human Resource Management. By taking account of the international dimension of employment relations, this book is at the forefront of new developments in the field. The thematic approach of Comparative Employment Relations makes it distinctive from the country-by-country studies of this topic. Jack Eaton synthesizes recent work in the field to establish a basis for further study in the most important areas of industrial relations, including Japanese-style employment practices; comparative collective bargaining; the rules of employment and routes to skill formation; collective labour law; globalization and transnational companies. He concludes by examining the prospects for comparative employment relations. By equipping students with a set of useful concepts and perspectives, this book will give them the confidence to explore the now extensive international literature on employment management, and to utilize the methods of comparative analysis in their own work. This book will be essential reading for second- and third-year undergraduates studying business, management, economics and the sociology of work and industry.

I really did not know what to expect when I began reading the book, but once I got started I couldn't put it down. Mrs. R. did a wonderful job answering questions on issues teens have been wanting to ask for years but were not sure who to ask. As an educator and a parent, I would recommend this book to my fellow teachers as well as other parents.

                                      Book Description

Bridges and Boundaries offers a conversation between what might loosely be described as traditionalist diplomatic and military historians, and political scientists who employ qualitative case study methods to examine international relations. The book opens with a series of chapters discussing differences, commonalities, and opportunities for cross-fertilization between the two disciplines.

To help focus the dialogue on real events and research, the volume then revisits three empirical topics that have been studied at length by members of both disciplines: British hegemony in the nineteenth century; diplomacy in the interwar period and the causes of World War II; and the origins and course of the Cold War. For each of these subjects, a political scientist, a historian, and a commentator reflect on how disciplinary "guild rules" have shaped the study of international events. The book closes with incisive overviews by Robert Jervis and Paul W. Schroeder.

Bridges and Boundaries explores how historians and political scientists can learn from one another and illustrates the possibilities that arise when open-minded scholars from different disciplines sit down to talk.

                                              Book Description

Surveying Africa, Asia, and the Americas, this important new collection looks at roles of science, medicine, and technology during five centuries of colonialism. This thought-provoking history examines the many intersections of science, politics, and culture during colonialism, including the relation between racism and medical science, "exploration" and its potential for wealth, and the perceived differences between indigenous knowledge and European science. Sixteen chapters focus on such topics as intellectual property rights and biodiversity, "acclimatizing" the world, and science and development. Bringing together contributions from scholars of history and science from around the globe, Colonialism and Science forges a new path for readers interested in science and society during the modern era.

Of all Anne LaBastille's books, this is my favorite. She practices what she preaches and heads to South America where she documents the extinction of a species. Her compassion for the environment coupled with her own personal narrative make for very compelling reading.

The only thing I do not understand is why so many of her books are out of print. The Woodswoman series should be required reading in college courses and Mama Poc should be read by anyone that cares about the environment.

4 out of 5 stars Behind the extinction of a species.......2000-09-10

Every year, newspapers dole out articles about the endangered or even extinction of a species somewhere on the globe. Yet, few describe the multitude of reasons for this event, much less the brave people who fight the battles. Dr. Anne LaBastille's, "Mama Poc" details the myriad of mistakes and consequences of the now extinct Atitlan giant grebe. Starting over 25 years ago, Dr. LaBastille started a one-person movement to save a rare species of a water bird on a large volcanic lake in the middle of Guatemala. A modern day Dr. Livingston, Anne LaBastille dealt with local residents of Lake Atitlan, the Guatemalan government and dozens of foundations to obtain the necessary grants. These were not just to save a bird species, but a large recreational lake, a way of life and the residents livelihood. The author has woven a personal memoir detailing the dilemmas of her work. Far from a flat testimonial, one reads about the friends and coworkers that befriended Dr. LaBastille during her years of research. It is a personal story as well as a brilliant documentary of her research filled with stories of earthquakes, revelations, periless lake storms, successes, political guerillas, murder and love. At first the reader may wonder why on earth someone would go through all this trouble to save a water bird. By the end of the first chapter you will find yourself cheering for the underdog with all the odds stacked against her. The Smithsonian Institution's Thomas E. Lovejoy summed it all up in the 'forward'. "The measure of our success will be in the number of species that survive. They will also be our reward". Well said.

5 out of 5 stars A tale of extinction told in a moving, but unsentimental way.......1997-05-17

Among all the tales of commitment to a cause, personal loss, and bravery to face the world despite the heartbreaks it brings, Anne LaBastille's story of the decline and eventual extinction of the giant pied-billed grebe of Guatemala's Lake Atitlan is a winner. Beginning with the author's arrival at the lake in 1965, the memoir-cum natural history tells the saga of how the young naturalist came to fall in love with the most engaging of the country's water birds and its surroundings, and how against the odds of weather, earthquakes, and political turmoil, she and her Guatemalan cohorts documented the gradual erosion of the species's habitat over the subsequent two and a half decades. LaBastille weaves together the story of losing a species with that of losing a lover and friends, so that we feel her grief in both personal and professional domains. At the same time, she keeps enough distance so that we learn the facts of the case with its details of over-development and careless management of the lake's assets that contributed to the final loss of a species. Although we know the outcome of her story from page one, her suspenseful account leaves us hoping for a different ending right up until the last sentence. LaBastille blames no one cause, but her tale makes it clear that the the giant grebe's fate was not inevitable.
