This book shows you all you want to know about colours. It's not truly scientific but it showed me the best and most of colour-theory. I had some trouble with the science-language but hey, I'm Dutch, not a native "American" speaker! The only thing that I would change in this book is more pictures, and all in colour!

Great coffee table book.......2006-03-19

While I won't go to the trouble of selling this book, I do regret having purchased it. There are many other texts that do a much more nuanced and cogent exposition of the relationship between color and culture. My future use of this book will be as a visual reference, i.e. to refer to the various paintings and other works gorgeously reproduced in color.

Otherwise, Gage's Color and Culture as well as Color and Meaning are best used as "intelligent" coffee table tomes.

Derriere Views.......2001-03-30

The famous fantasy artist Boris Vallejo has produced here his photographic "homage to one single body part." In doing so, he expresses his "undying fascination with the human body" in this "tribute to female beauty."

This book contains nudity that would exceed an R rating in a motion picture.

Derrieres. What can I say about them? My guess would be that you either find them interesting to look at . . . or you don't. If you are in the first category, read on. If in the second, look elsewhere.

There are more angles and ways to picture derrieres than I would have imagined before reviewing this book. As a result, there is minimal repetition in the images portrayed here.

Mr. Vallejo primarily photographs to create images for drawing his illustrations. So for the most part these images don't have a lot else going on. They are basically partial body studies. As such, they are unretouched and unfiltered so you see the flaws very clearly (whether scars, stretch marks, blemishes, or whatever). A few have props or interesting poses, but for the most part you can imagine you are taking close-up views of classical statuary from the midpoint of the body in the rear.

As usual, Mr. Vallejo does not name, identify, or number the pages so it is hard to refer to the individual works. I will do my best here in order to give you a better view of what's in the book.

Most of the models are Mr. Vallejo's usuals (including his wife) and are body-builders. But there are also some nonbody-building women in the collection of images. Certainly, body-building seems to have a large impact on the shape and tautness of that area of the anatomy. He uses very few models here, so the images do get a little repetitive from that perspective.

The images are in both color and black-and-white. The images on the facing pages sometimes have interesting dialogues with one another, and sometimes the dialogue doesn't quite work.

The book would have been better with a little more editing. With about 30 fewer of the weakest images removed, a fine essay, and some references to the images, this would have been a five-star book. You can simply skip over those weaker images (once you identify them for yourself), and make the book more interesting for yourself.

Here are my favorites (as best I can describe them without being too lengthy, and in the order they appear in the book):

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I suppose what makes this book most unusual is that it addresses a part of our anatomy that it is hard for us to see, except on others. Does that change our perspective? I think so. I suspect it makes us more objective.

After you finish viewing these images, my suggestion is that you take some body part that appeals to you (whether eyes, ears, neck, arms, or whatever) and take a few days to notice them on everyone you see. This will be good experience in helping you become more observant, as well as letting you develop your taste. After you have done this with one area, try it with another one. Keep doing it until you find yourself capturing the personality of people better through what you can observe in these ways. Be sure to consider posture as one of your views.

Get past the surface, to the reality within, through careful observation!

Nice photoes...some great....a few sorta cheesy.......2000-01-01

While overall the photoes were terrific, I was a bit turned off by the few images of the woman in jeans and boots. A bit too "hicky" for my taste, and all you really saw was...well, a woman in jeans. Also, it appears all the "tushes" are of women. Sometimes I get tired of people only thinking the female form is beautiful. Men are beautiful too.

Boris Vallejo is the perfect person to do a butt book........1999-04-05

I was lucky enough to interview this artistic genius many years ago, and it's great to see that his talent keeps expanding. Boris has a passion for the derriere, epitomized by his paintings but also perfectly represented in this collection of his photographs. If you're a fanny fan, this book is for you.

A Must for Art Fans-- he's on Pg 4.......1999-01-21

Arse, Butt, Behind, Fanny, perhaps even 'the Shanks'; call it what you like, this book is 100 pictures of it. The photography is beautiful-- some of the images are so true-to-life you feel as if you could reach out and touch them. They're all beautifully lit, and any serious student of art, photography, or proctology would do well to spend some time poring over the varying subjects depicted here, especially #'s 17, 44, & 61, which, I feel, are testament to the ever-constant pathos of man. Looking through this book at all the asses--love 'em or hate 'em--you'll find you just have to have one. Makes a great coffee table book, as your guests will undoubtedly regard it with wonder.

Hindsight: Boris Vallejo--His Photographic Art.......2000-06-17

I have always been a fan of Boris and his methods of coming up with a painting. But what has really interested me in his work is his portrail of the human body. Now that I have seen his book and witnessed his love for the human form, I see why his paintings look so real. The models he uses are believeable in the poses they do. I recomend it to people who have a love for the human form and also a love for Boris' work. It is also good for practing drawing the human form as I have used it for so many practice sessions.

This is a very good book with great pictures, the only reason it didn't get 5 stars was because there was no obese, skinny, or male "hindsights". If it was truly a pictorial of "hindsights" it would have more diversity in it. The pictures that are in it are of perfectly formed bums, which is good, but so is diversity.

By taxing the income of corporate firms at a different rate than non-corporate firms, taxes can play an important role in a firm's choice of organizational form. The sensitivity of the organizational form decision to tax rates provides a key indicator of the distortion created by the corporate income tax. This paper uses new cross-sectional data on organizational form choices across states compiled in the Census of Retail Trade to estimate this sensitivity. The results document a significant impact of the relative taxation of corporate to personal income on the share of real economic activity that is done by corporations and that the impact is many times larger than has been found in the previous empirical literature based on time-series data. The results show little impact, however, on the actual operations of firms such as their labor intensity, wages and the like. They do indicate that firms are able to exploit the progressivity of the corporate income tax system by dividing into numerous firms.

Not very readable and not much use to a worried step-parent. As a review of research it now suffers from age - 1987 publication. It might be of use if you are doing a research paper and want some early references. To be fair it's better than some of the other books on remarriage, which are inspirational or first person with little solid fact.

A Solid Contribution to Civil War Naval Literature.......2000-04-11

The Civil War is one of the last bastions of the amateur historian, and has given rise to a lot of amateurish work--but not in this case. Author William Marvel has cast aside many of the hackneyed myths that surround the Alabama and her last battle and has gone back to primary sources. Using these obscure logbooks and diaries, he alternately describes the lives of both the Alabama and the Kearsarge and particularly their crews. What emerges from Marvel's combination of conscientious research and lively writing is a tale both scholarly and enthralling, a detailed and fascinating slice of Civil War life at sea. I have read no other account of the Civil War-era sailor that gives such a vivid and convincing picture of his origins, thoughts, work, fights and ultimate fate. To back up the narrative there are a few interesting photographs (no plans for modelers, though), plenty of footnotes, a complete bibliography, a glossary and crew rosters. This book stands head and shoulders above the standard glory-mongering Civil War tales of derring-do, and will delight the armchair historian or naval history buff.

The auks are marine birds widespread in the cooler parts of northern seas. Often regarded as the northern hemisphere's counterparts to penguins, they are accomplished underwater swimmers, able to dive to great depths. Among bird families, they exhibit an unusual degree of variability in their
breeding sites, which range from old-growth, temperate forests to barren sea-cliffs and rocky outcrops among mountain glaciers. Chick development is equally variable: in some species chicks leave for the sea soon after hatching, while in others they grow to full size at the nest site. This diversity
of behavior makes the auks an excellent subject for the study of adaptation. The authors, who have extensive field experience with auks, provide descriptions of the major features of the family and an engaging discussion of the adaptive significance of various traits. Part I contains general
chapters on auk evolution, ecology, behavior, chick development, populations, and conservation. These chapters are illustrated with black-and-white drawings, summary graphs and tables. Part II follows with the twenty-three species accounts, giving comprehensive information on the birds in their
natural state, including distribution maps. All species are illustrated in color, in superb plates by Ian Lewington especially commissioned for this volume.
The Auks is part of Oxford's multi-volume Bird Families of the World, a new series of handbooks for professional scientists and amateur ornithologists. Each volume gives a comprehensive synthesis of current knowledge on one bird family or several related families; the complete series will be the
definitive source for information on species of birds.

A fascinating account of the biology of the world's auks (or alcids). Full of valuable nuggets of information, much coming from years of field research by the authors. The text is rich in useful maps, line drawings and tables of facts and figures. The color plates by Ian Lewington are up to his usual very high standard and show all living species in the majority of plumage states. I found the discussion of the evolution and radiation of both extant and extinct species particularly interesting. The high price and limited treatment of field identification may put off many birdwatchers, however those who read the book will be surprised at how interesting the auks really are.
