3 out of 5 stars A decent book.......2005-02-24

I liked West Coast rooms better. The rooms were more contemporary overall. East Coast rooms did have much more of a variety of styles. A little of something for everyone. They were well styled, nice photos. I wouldn't purchase this if I were looking for an instructional design book though.

4 out of 5 stars No stodgy traditionalists here..........2000-05-29

I really enjoyed this book. Most east coast design that is not country in orgin is very traditional. This book features a very nice array of styles to choose from. More modern and hip designs are found with a smattering of the east coast thrown in...

    Book Description

An international authority of paper and Senior Conservator for Paper at the Winterthur Museum, John Krill has written a detailed and interesting account of the evolution and types of paper available to artists in England from the Renaissance to the early nineteenth century.

The first chapter provides the basic information needed to understand hand papermaking and discusses each of the paper types. The second chapter introduces the three major types of paper produced: white, brown, and blue. The third focuses on new products, especially papers for printing and drawing. The last chapter explores the influx of new artists' paper that occurred around the year 1800.

2 out of 5 stars A good start to enter 3D Max world........2002-03-06

This is a 4 stars book, but is outdated.

        My old commentary:
With practic examples and tutorials since the beggining, it teaches in a easy way.

4 out of 5 stars Good for Intermediate and begginers........1999-03-17

This books has good tutorials and explanations about topics like, methods of object creation/modeling, textures and lights. This is what you have to understand before making a scene or animation. You can also work with animations, if you pc is good enough. This book gives what it takes to start working or work better with 3DSMax fx. By the way, the book is about 3D Studio Max 1, but since the way lights, materials and objects work is the same, it's a good choice.

Go to #3dsmax at Undernet if you need help.

        5 out of 5 stars wonderful!!.......1999-01-29

This IS the book to get if you are a biginner with MAX! I bought Inside 3D Studio MAX Vol. 1 about a week ago. I now know that 3D Studio MAX Applied is the book i should have bought. I learned more in the first fifty pages than i did in the two- hundred of Inside 3ds!! Excellent!

2 out of 5 stars Do NOT buy it if you're going for animation..........1998-10-03

I read the book and saw that the book teaches you more of a CAD style MAX than the MAX that an animator would like to see. If you want to design kitchens and bathrooms, this book is for you. If you want to design or animate characters...move on to something else.

4 out of 5 stars A good book if you are going from r4 to Max.......1998-04-22

More visuals would help, but overall I thought the book was good at re-aquainting an old user with the new layout. I'm not sure how this book would fare for brand new users, however, most books covering this topic can be quite daunting to the new user.

That's the only word i can describe this book with...it really is. If your anything like me and you get bored quickly this is the book for you.Unlike others it doesnt start out with those boring animated sphere tutorials. It really gets right down to business and prevents you from that inavitable hybernation of studying. Begginers-This is the Book for you. One Warning though. If you are a CD buff you wont find satisfaction with the CD inclosed here but hey you can always play frisbey with it on the spare time provided to you by the Cut To The Chase-Keep Me Awake Stucture of this book(if you wont spend time on the Useless Technical support and just give up on the CD part-you dont need it anyway).

4 out of 5 stars Excelence is the key.......1998-10-13

When I deciced to start learning 3d max I din't know what book I had to buy, I was looking for a book where I could learn from the biginning and get familiarize with the Interface not something standard where they just explain things in general, I wanted to see the "CLICK here and there type of explanations" step by step. After reading the book I consider myself a Person who knows what is doing.

note: Fundamentals from riders is a book made for intermediate people. ( too standard and just explain stuff generally).

4 out of 5 stars This book if just perfect for starters.......1998-10-07

When I decided to learn 3D studio max I headed right to a book store to find the best book for for this subject however, they all looked like they were made for professional users, even the "3d studio max fundamentals" Everything changed when I got my hands on this book.. You will learn everything so fast...I'm so glad I found it.

                              Book Description

Big businesses have faced a persistent dilemma in China since the nineteenth century: how to retain control over corporate hierarchies while adapting to local social networks. Sherman Cochran, in the first study to compare Western, Japanese, and Chinese businesses in Chinese history, shows how various businesses have struggled with this issue as they have adjusted to dramatic changes in Chinese society, politics, and foreign affairs.
Cochran devotes a chapter each to six of the biggest business ventures in China before the Communist revolution: two Western-owned companies, Standard Oil and British-American Tobacco Company; two Japanese-owned companies, Mitsui Trading Company and Naigai Cotton Company; and two Chinese-owned firms, Shenxin Cotton Mills and China Match Company. In each case, he notes the businesses' efforts to introduce corporate hierarchies for managing the distribution of goods and the organization of factory workers, and he describes their encounters with a variety of Chinese social networks: tenacious factions of English-speaking compradors and powerful trade associations of non-English-speaking merchants channeling goods into the marketplace; and small cliques of independent labor bosses and big gangs of underworld figures controlling workers in the factories.
Drawing upon archival sources and individual interviews, Cochran describes the wide range of approaches that these businesses adopted to deal with Chinese social networks. Each business negotiated its own distinctive relationship with local networks, and as each business learned about marketing goods and managing factory workers in China, it adjusted this relationship. Sometimes it strengthened its hierarchical control over networks and sometimes it delegated authority to networks, but it could not afford to take networks for granted or regard them as static because they, in turn, took their own initiative and made their own adjustments.
In this book Cochran calls into question the idea that the spread of capitalism has caused business organizations to converge over time. His cases bring to light numerous organizational forms used by Western, Japanese, and Chinese corporations in China's past, and his conclusions suggest that businesses have experimented with new forms on the basis of their historical experiences--especially their encounters with social networks.

When my 38 year old daughter was diagnosed with breast cancer, the bottom dropped out of my world. For nine months, we tried our best to support her through a mastectomy, eight chemotherapy treatments and 35 radiation treatments. Reading Maureen McCutcheon's book gave me hope and helped me to laugh with my daughter at things that were far from funny. I would reccommend the book to all family members as well as to the patients. Thankfully, our daughter is doing beautifully now.

                                        Book Description

In the summer of 1862, President Lincoln called General Henry W. Halleck to Washington, D.C., to take command of all Union armies in the death struggle against the Confederacy. For the next two turbulent years, Halleck was Lincoln's chief war advisor, the man the President deferred to in all military matters. Yet, despite the fact that he was commanding general far longer than his successor, Ulysses S. Grant, he is remembered only as a failed man, ignored by posterity.

In the first comprehensive biography of Halleck, the prize-winning historian John F. Marszalek recreates the life of a man of enormous achievement who bungled his most important mission. When Lincoln summoned him to the nation's capital, Halleck boasted outstanding qualifications as a military theorist, a legal scholar, a brave soldier, and a California entrepreneur. Yet in the thick of battle, he couldn't make essential decisions. Unable to produce victory for the Union forces, he saw his power become subsumed by Grant's emergent leadership, a loss that paved the way for Halleck's path to obscurity.

Harnessing previously unused research, as well as the insights of modern medicine and psychology, Marszalek unearths the seeds of Halleck's fatal wartime indecisiveness in personality traits and health problems. In this brilliant dissection of a rich and disappointed life, we gain new understanding of how the key decisions of the Civil War were taken, as well as insight into the making of effective military leadership.

3 out of 5 stars Old Brains on the Couch .......2006-10-06

A biographer has many roles and one of them is to be something of an armchair therapist for their subjects. This seems to be a constant theme in Civil War biography these days and perhaps Stephen Sears can be blamed for his heavy handed psycho analysis of George McClellan. I just finished "Commander of All Lincoln's Armies" by John Marszalek, a good look at Halleck and better than the Ambrose and Anders books on the subject. The problem is that Marszalek argues that Halleck's bad relations with his father ensured that he could never order Union generals around, from McCllean to Burnside to Meade to Buell while acting like his tyrannical father with Sherman, Hooker and Grant. Even worse, Halleck apparently spent his entire life searching for substitute fathers and he should have found one with Lincoln but didn't. I'm probably more of a fan of Halleck than most Civil War students (comes with being a college registrar, I appreciate the skill of pushing papers) but it is fair to say that Old Brains had little skills as a field commander or an executive (though he was a solid administrator). It's fair to say he was assigned the wrong role as opposed to blaming it on bad relations with his father. Despite these odd trips into the twilight zone, the biography is solid. While the Ambrose and Anders books cover the war but leave the rest of Halleck's life untouched, Marszalek offers a fairly detailed look into Halleck's rise in the military and California politics and society. The account of the post war years seem a little lacking. While the book certainly has a number of flaws, this remains the best look at "Old Brains," an important and overlooked leader in the struggle to preserve the Union.

4 out of 5 stars An enigmatic officer.......2005-07-04

The author, as he did in his biography of Sherman, bases much of his interpretation of Halleck's character on his relationship with his father. Whether this is correct or not, this book does a good job of delineating Halleck's prewar life and career. Once the war gets underway, Halleck rises to a position for which he is unsuited. Henry Halleck has managed to remain in the shadows of history for a long time. This book does bring his performance into the light of scrutiny.

4 out of 5 stars The best study of Halleck, but...........2005-05-13

This is only the 3rd biography of the least remembered General of the Army of the Civil War. James Robertson published a short monograph early in his career. Not to long ago Kurt Anders released Henry Halleck's War, which fulsomely praised Halleck's accomplishments and intellectual influence; but blithely ignored Halleck's manifest failures as a commander.

Dr. Marszalek provides a tonic. His research has revealed the development of the man; his intellectualism, his ambition, and his inability to compete and lead others forthrightly. There is also the picture of a frustrated and ill man dealing with stress and disease with opiates, alcohol and tobacco. While Marszalek leaves one wondering as to the ultimate debilitating effects of these drugs, there presence leaves the reader ill at ease.

While this is a superior critical biography, I was left most unsatified by the discussions of general staff prosecution of the war and how Halleck managed his role as the chief executive of the Army. Kurt Anders detailed review of the Official Records correspondence gives more credence to Halleck's influence over Sherman and Grant than Marszalek allows. Since critical journals and papers for the national command principals are generally lacking it is easy to slip into operational summaries and not detail the strategic management of ways and means which brought armies into the field. There is a regretable void here.

There is also the problem of the status of the General in Chief. The office was created at the end of the War of 1812 and codified by John C Calhoun afterwards. But the position never had authority in law, or a clear military charter. The President of the United States was the Commander, and the division of labor between the Secretary of War and the General of the Army was not defined. Halleck is criticized for not taking the opportunity of the situation and asserting more control than he was authorized. But Halleck was a lawyer among Capitol Hill lawyers. The relations between these movers and shakers could be Byzantine. When Grant was elevated the decision was made to give him a new title, General of the Armies. For Grant it was made clear that he had full authority to command, and was fully expected to command, the armies in the field. A different kettle of fish from that which Halleck got thrown in.

At any rate; this is a much needed and revealing biography of an important and neglected senior leader of the Union war effort.

5 out of 5 stars An interesting biography.......2004-11-04

Marszalek has written an interesting biography about General Halleck and his failed leadership within the Union High Command. According to Marszalek, Halleck was severely handicapped by a hostile relationship with his father that later influenced his relations with subordinates. Marszalek believes that Halleck was unable to preasure McClellan,Buell, and Meade because they symbolized in Halleck's mind his own intimidating father. However, Halleck often acted like his father in relationships with Grant and Hooker by chatising them for their supposed sloppy behavior. The main weakness of the book is that Marszalek fails to account how institutional defects such as a lack of any post-graduate officer training that made Halleck, Buell, and McClellan share similar traits.Nevertheles this is an interesting account of how Halleck commanded the Union armies from 1862 to 1864.
