All does not read well that starts well and ends well.......2000-08-12
Starts off very well with the hope that it will get more technical but instead becomes more theoretical in areas such as aesthetics and fine art, areas which the author seems to not have a background in. ie, his discussion of perception, symmetry and balance etc. If you can skip the middle chapters its not bad but again I had hoped for more technical insights. Perhaps I needed a book on golf course construction. I just assumed from architecture courses that construction issues and recommendations as well as more detail of layout relative to game play would be discussed.
Amazing!.......1999-10-18
This is one of five best technical books I ever found. As a beginner in golf course design, I found in this book all I needed to realize my projects.
Fascinating,.......1999-10-15
This is a fascinating book for any golf enthusiast or historian, as well as an essential practical resource for anyone actively involved in golf course design, construction and maintenance.
The design process progresses from the green to the individual hole to the entire course. Detailed technical information is well integrated with aesthetic and theoretical concepts making the entire book interesting & readable.
The book is packed with color photos of individual holes to illustrate design concepts, sites under construction and wonderful historical documents. The technical drawings & plans are well done and very useful.
This book is a great example of making a technical manual a joy to read. Any golfer who appreciates the background of the course he or she is playing on will love it.
It makes me want to become an architect.......1999-06-29
This book is filled with wonderful pictures from cover to cover. An incredible collection of the worlds most famous golf courses and designers.
Comprehensive overview of designing and building courses.......1997-12-22
Simply an outstanding look at the fascinating process of taking a piece of land and sculpting a chapmionship layout. A step-by-step process that details the many intricacies and disciplines involved in creating a golf course. Any golfer will more fully appreciate the not only what they see on a course, but also what they "don't" see. The photos and illustrations are plentiful and precise in leading one through each phase of construction. Must reading for an serious student of the game. Kevin Burke

Product Description
Having grown up in the ancient rug-making region of Kerman in Iran as part of a family of educators, collectors, and dealers in Oriental rugs, New York dealer Parviz Nemati knows as much about these magnificent textiles as anyone in the world. Though his commentary here provides a solid foundation for the enthusiast or collector, this large album is foremost a visual feast of rugs and tapestrieshandmade textiles that the author believes are the most expressive artworks ever created. These weavings from Persia, Turkey, the Caucasus regions, India, China, and Europe are presented in 300 lush color plates and additional closeups, along with Nemati's notes and his introductions to each region. Of particular interest is the section on tapestriesthe "movable frescoes of the North"with sumptuous examples from the 16th century to the 20th.

Book Description
Essentials of Corporate Finance, 4/e by Ross, Westerfield, and Jordan is written to convey the most important concepts and principles of corporate finance at a level that is approachable for a wide audience. The authors retain their modern approach to finance, but have distilled the subject down to the essential topics in 18 chapters. They believe that understanding the "why" is just as important, if not more so, than understanding the "how," especially in an introductory course. Three basic themes emerge as their central focus: 1. An emphasis on intuition¿separate and explain the principles at work on a common sense, intuitive level before launching into specifics. Underlying ideas are discussed first in general terms, then followed by specific examples that illustrate in more concrete terms how a financial manager might proceed in a given situation 2. A unified valuation approach¿Net Present Value is treated as the basic concept underlying corporate finance. Every subject the authors cover is firmly rooted in valuation, and care is taken to explain how decisions have valuation effects. 3. A managerial focus¿Students learn that financial management concerns management. The role of financial manager as decision maker is emphasized and they stress the need for managerial input and judgment.
Customer Reviews:
Easy to follow and a good resource to keep on the bookshelf.......2007-05-01
Excellent finance book offering just what is promised, the essentials. Examples are clearly presented with an excellent use of color coding to highlight concepts and formulas. In fact, I purchased this book as a textbook requirement for a pre-requisite finance class (as a refresher after an 8 year hiatus after my BBA). Then, when I actually ended up taking the Financial Management class as part of the MBA program, I discarded the textbook from that class and referred back to this one (got an A in the class). It's that good.
User-Friendly.......2006-02-24
This is an excellent book for anyone who needs an easy to understand approach to Corporate Finance. I'll be holding on to my copy.
Look elsewhere for Finance intro..........2005-12-21
I'm an adjunct professor at a regional liberal arts university, and I admit I've not read as many textbooks as the average ivory tower dweller. That being said, I used this book (through no choice of my own) to teach an Undergraduate Intro to Finance class. Decent text, and some good explanation of the more complex ideas in the second half of the book, but what kills this as a textbook is the HORRIBLE support materials. Errors throughout the Power Point presentations, test bank questions, study problems...I was so disgusted by the end of the semester. It's probably okay as a brush-up text, but not what I'd recommend for newbies.
Great Experience.......2005-09-29
This book arrived on a timely manner and in real good condition. It was exactly what they said it would be in their description. Wouldn't mind doing business with them again in the future!
Good choice, Easy to read and understand.......2005-03-14
Very good intro book that is easy to read and easy to understand.
Book takes a very basic approach to explaining things so as students not familiar with finance can easily grasp the concepts. Use of color a nice touch compared to older black & white texts, also lots of recent events (Enron/MCI/M.Stewart) are discussed along with subtle references to Metallica, NIN, Bowie, etc...
Many hints that tie in excel and the web, even an appendix section on how to use your financial calculator. Good 'preview' book to their more exhaustive book aptly titled 'Corporate Finance'

Horrendous.... Avoid!.......2006-06-08
I picked this book up from the library, with the goal to see how obstetricians view pregnancy and birth. What a terrible book!
Most of the things the author puts forward was in complete contradiction with what we learnt in our childbirth preparation class. And this was a hospital sponsored class, not hippy, tree-hugging class.
Quotes from the book:
On epidurals: "Epidural is a miracle procedure" and "Epidural is God's gift to pregnant women." "I respect the decision of wome who elect to endure childbirth without an epidural, although I can't say I understand it."
On mobility in labor and continuous fetal monitoring: "I've had patients who initially complained about the continuous monitor, telling me that they read in a book that it was better to walk around during labor. In the long run, however, my patients are ultimately grateful for the chance to stay in bed and take it easy."
Horrible! Horrible! Don't read this book.
Horrible..........2006-04-05
As a nurse I was appalled when I read this book. Dr. Brasner sounds like most other OBs out there - big headed and full of herself. I would encourage women to do their own research on the interventions such as epidurals and continuous fetal monitoring. Most of what Dr. Brasner says in this book is lies. Sad...
What a waste of paper........2005-05-13
Zero stars would be a more appropriate rating.
I agree this book is full of false information. Don't waste your money. I paid $2 for this book at a discount book store and I felt that it was money wasted.
There are many great pregnancy and birth books out there that are actually based on factual information. They give the pros and cons to many of the interventions that are commonly used in obstetrics today. How can a woman make the decision that is right for her if she is not presented with ALL the facts?
I will recommend a few books that are worth your money.
Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn by Simkin, Whaley, Keppler
THe Birth Book by Dr. Sears
The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth by Henci Goer (this may be a little to the anti-epidural side of the scale, but at least her statements are factual)
Highly Recommend.......2004-02-25
It's been three years since my labor, and I still recommend this book as my favorite to pregnant friends. I was just about to buy it for someone and was interested in reading the reviews. Now I feel the need to comment on the couple of negative ones. It's self righteous comments like that, that made this book all the more comforting to me. I had an absolutely beautiful amazing childbirth. I had and epidural that my doctor made sure had worn off 2 hours before the birth so that I was prepared to push. I respect every woman's choice to try to have the kind of child birth that they envision. What I don't respect is women that spout their own opinions as if we should all do it their way.
Informative, Practical and Realistic.......2004-01-23
The book is excellent: Very informative, practical and realistic. Dr. Brasner is an excellent physician and a true leader.
Book Description
The official life of the soldier and statesman killed by the IRA in 1979 paints a rounded, sympathetic, and yet undeceived portrait of Mountbatten's character. From his christening (attended by Queen Victoria) to his days as Supreme Commander in Southeast Asia during World War II, to India where he oversaw the move to independence to the Suez crisis, we meet a figure who was profoundly human. "Lucid, stylish, perfectly organized and immaculately presented, it has all Mountbatten's best qualities."--John Keegan, Sunday Times.

Official, but honest biography of Mountbatten........2001-10-27
Philip Ziegler was Mountbatten's official biographer. However, he claims in the preface to the book not to have been subject to any censorship, and given the frankness with which he acknowledges his subject's flaws, one can believe his claim. Mountbatten was a close relative of the British royal family; Prince Philip is his nephew, and he regularly referred to Queen Elizabeth as his niece; and he was also a close confident of Prince Charles. He was quite ambitious, and not above using his royal connections to advance his military career. How successful that career was is open to some debate. There is no question about his physical courage -- indeed, he may have had too much of it. As Field Marshall Mountgomery enjoyed pointing out, Mountbatten had three destroyers sunk under him during the early part of the war. Later, he oversaw the Dieppe raid, which was one of the worst fiascos of the war -- a large commando raid on a fortified port resulted in near elimination of some units by German forces composed in many cases of file clerks and cooks. This loss did not stop his career, however; he ended the war with the command of the Burma theater, where he seems to have performed well. After the war, he became the last British Viceroy of India, with the task of working out a peaceful transition from British rule. That was a failure, as hundreds of thousands died in riots between Hindus and Muslims. The Muslims could have been forgiven for suspecting Mountbatten's neutrality; his wife was carrying on an affair with the Indian leader Nehru. Mountbatten was no saint in these matters, and could hardly complain. Mountbatten was murdered in 1979 when the IRA put a bomb on his boat. Why they did this has never been clear. Mountbatten had never been involved in Irish affairs, and at almost 80 years of age played no important part in the Government.
Ziegler does a good job of capturing Mountbatten's charm -- almost everyone who met him liked him -- and his vanity -- after Elizabeth became queen, his aides would compete to see who could be the first to get him to refer to "my niece, the Queen." Curiously, Ziegler begins the book with a description of Mountbatten enjoying reading books on his family tree, an opening that is quite similar to that of "Persuasion" by Jane Austen. The similarity is odd because the character in Austen's novel is a fool and a snob with no ability, and no other claim to distinction. That could not be said of Mountbatten.
Mountbatten lead a truly interesting life, and Ziegler has produced what is likley to be the definitive biography of that life. His honesty is such that one need not be an uncritical admirer of Mountbatten to enjoy this biography.

Book Description
Classical Greeks considered the Mycenaean civilization to be the basis of their glorious and heroic heritage, but its material existence was not confirmed until the excavations of Heinrich Schliemann in the late nineteenth century. In the ensuing years, as with the field of archaeology in general, emphasis has shifted from revealing monuments and finding treasure to dealing with less glamorous, more scientifically-oriented investigations concerning aspects such as social and political organization, economic functions and settlement patterns.
With its more than 2000 entries, this reference work serves as both an introduction to and a summary of the study of ancient Mycenaean civilization. Considerably expanded from the first edition, there are 500 new entries representing materials published since 1991. The largest part of the book is made up of annotated bibliography entries arranged topically with introductory material for each section. The book also includes a general introduction to Mycenaean civilization, a glossary, and author, place and subject indexes.
Book Description
Easy-to-follow instructions and diagrams for building dozens of attractive, practical birdhouses — from a one-room house for bluebirds to a forty-two-room structure for purple martins. Also contains a supplement with easy projects for novices, among them houses made from such common objects as gourds, flower pots, and tin cans. 56 plates; 4 figures.
Customer Reviews:
Easy does Not mean for Beginners.......2006-03-12
This is a great book if you already know how to read drawings, but no step-by-step instruction are included in the individual plans. What it does have is a lot of great ideas and information, such as how to build a hinged pole to make cleaning easy and what size hole to bore for the type of bird you want to nest. The drawings illustrate how to make the birdhouses easy to clean and maintain, as well as dimensions for each part. If you have made at least half a dozen woodworking projects, you can make the "easy" birdhouses. If you are an intermediate level woodworker, you can make the "advanced" projects.
