If you love historical architecture, and the histories of old homes, then you shouldn't miss this book. The photographs alone make this a book worth owning, but the author has also included well written, indepth, and informative stories about these incrediable homes, their builders, owners and subsiquent owners. Reading this book has encouraged me to plan a trip to visit to the Hudson River Valley to see these beautiful places for myself.

Mansions For Miles.......2005-05-19

This is a nice overview of the best of the estates along the Hudson. The book give a nice short history on the houses presented and the photos are nice, though the pictures could be more crisp. Having said that, I did enjoy the book and was just amazed at the variety in the styles of the houses from period to period; really a very informative book. If you are interested in this sort of thing, then you will certainly be pleased with this book, though the $50.00 price tag is a bit daunting.

Hudson River Mansions.......2002-04-27

This book is fantasic! I highly recommend it. It has loads of spectacular color photographs, and the mansions are breath taking. Being someone who has never visisted the area, this book really makes me consider a trip to New York, if only to see these mansions.

Easy to read.......2004-02-04

Having just bought a top end digital camera I reviewed several books on photography in order to learn some tips. I found this book to be by far the easiest to read and understand. Don't let the word 'Encylopedia' fool you - Mr. Davies breaks done every topic involving the use of cameras, explaining everything form aperture to zoning in a way even a rookie like myself could understand. Lots of color pictures and graphics.

Where most other books describe in paragraph after paragraph, Stoppard's book shows, with detailed line drawings, full-color photographs, and lucid charts and diagrams. OK, so maybe it's bit disconcerting to see an image of an actual vaginal birth and the site where the epidural shunt tucks in. On the other hand, the line drawings showing the size of your child's hand as it develops will help you visualize that tiny life better than the commonplace description that your child is now the size of a pickle or a strawberry. Overall, this book is pretty informative (good photographs, interesting sidebars, especially for the new mother). I appreciated the step by step pictures and details of the physical changes that a pregnant woman and her baby go through in each stage of pregnancy. While some of the case studies were interesting and informative, such as the study on Rh incompatibility, many of them offered too much opinion, often politically correct and illogical, and not enough fact. For example, the case studies on choosing single parenthood and on being a working mother, promoted many of the viewpoints that would make a single parent or working mother feel better about her choice, but these viewpoints lack common sense. For example, Ms. Stoppard promotes her beliefs, such as that the child will "not suffer from having only one parent", that even though the single mother mentioned in the case will be working full-time, she will have "quality time" with her child (as a full-time parent who does not believe that there really is such a thing and that it can be scheduled into tiny slots of time, I disagree with this statement), and that the job of the single mother mentioned in the article will automatically bring her "great satisfaction", while her child is home being raised for the most part by someone else. I also disagreed with her politically correct advice that although the "baby will develop close bonds with her caregiver.....this will in no way affect her relationship with her parents". In short, for the most part, this book provides a decent amount of information, but I would skip reading the majority of the case studies, as they are composed of too much opinion.

Love It!!.......2002-12-01

I was given this book by a friend during my first pregnancy and have since given it as a gift to several of my other friends who are expecting. I had several books given to me and this one was by far the easiest to use and the most informative. If you like the facts then this book is for you. The book explains some of the things the doctors check for at regular exams but don't explain to you. It even has a handy reference guide for all the problems you might experience, the reasons they occur, and things you can try to alleviate them. It is a small book just packed with information.

This is the book I buy for any expectant mother I know. My first copy was purchased 13 years ago and info not out dated!
I refered to this book over and over again throughout my pregnancies.

Incredibly useful.......2001-08-03

Having just found out I am pregnant my sister gave me this book and it is so useful. Incredibly useful. I am one of those women who are coming to motherhood late - in my late thrities and without any experience of either pregnancy or children in the family much. It is a bit nerve-wracking (as well as marvellously joyous) so this book has proved to be a real salve to my nerves. It is so straightforward, well set out and has a plethora of easy to access information to take you through the pregnancy and after.

The contents are divided into 15 sections - the second chapter is the one I turned to immediately - it has all the pictures and information about the developing baby - even photos of what the fetus looks like at various stages. There is certainly a lot to think about health wise as well - Chapters 4 and 5 are on eating and fitness during pregnancy.

Other chapters deal with making a Birth plan for yourself, managing labour, dealing with common complaints, sex during pregnancy, preparing for the baby, and there are three chapters at the end on issues dealing with being new parents.

I have found this book comforting in the extreme. I realise once the pregnancy gets more advanced I will be in an antenatal group and generally have more contact with people who know about what the hell is going on. But for a first time mother with a lot of burning questions to ask and not many people to go to about them it is a wonderful reference book to have on hand.

I've been searching for a specific guide on pregnancy and birth book and Dr.Miriam Stoppard books are the best. It is very specific in detail and it guides and helps any new mothers to be on their month to month pregnancy until they experience the birth of their child. All symtoms of pregnancy are explained easily and therefore no doubts occur except the feeling of self confidence and the courage to go on; overcoming all fears.It is a fantastic book! I had bought one for myself and I have bought another for my dear friend who is planning her pregnancy. It is definitely a great buy and keep for all mothers to be. I will definitely recommend this book for any of my friends.

North vs. South in Medieval Britain.......2000-06-09

A detailed account of the circumstances leading to Buckingham's rebellion, and the connection between the revolt and the ultimate fate of Richard III at Bosworth Field. The focus is on the gentry of the south of England who were loyal to Edward IV and eventually became the instigators of the rebellion. This book may be heavy going for the casual reader since it presumes basic familiarity with the events of the period. A good complement is Paul Murray Kendall's biography of Richard III, which describes how Richard gained support from the nobility and gentry of the north of England. The book includes lots of photographs and helpful maps. All in all, a good read.
