Lovely book!.......2007-09-27
A treasure of a book...pure and simple! One that I enjoy and am very happy to have in my library.
HRH The Prince of Wales Watercolours: An Inspiring Book.......2001-08-01
This delightful book is a treat for those who have an interest in art, England, or for those who simply wish to understand the mind of Prince Charles a little better. Far more than any biography, this book will give you an insight into the artistic mind of the Prince of Wales, as well as enlighten you to the way he feels about the environment, his country, and the World beyond England. The book follows His Highness through his many travels hither and thither around the world, including his travels in Scotland, Italy, Spain, and the Middle East. There are 73 beautiful color examples of Prince Charles's work selected by him. For an "amateur", as the Prince so calls himself, his work reflects the fact that His Highness has put his all into these works, and he has tremendous talent in the watercolour medium. Each of the 73 color plates in this book also are accompanied by Prince Charles's personal experiences while painting the picture. Some of these experiences appear soul-stirring and patriotic; for example his painting entitled View of Double Haven Bay from HMY Britannia. Then there are some phrases throughout the book that are quite humourous. Such as this line from page 38.."I was sitting on a grass slope amongst a large quantity of sheep droppings with my back beginning to give out and with pins and needles in my bottom!" Similar examples of the Prince's humor are all throughout the book. He also addresses some of the problems he had along the way with his artwork, such as rain and the "gentlemen of the press" getting in the way of artistic expression! On the whole, this is a wonderful book that will inspire you with its artwork, and keep you laughing along the way as well with bits of Prince Charles's humor. His rather humble attitude towards his work is understandable, given his position in life. However, His Highness must indeed feel a hint of pride for producing such lovely scenes on paper. I only hope that Prince Charles will eventually publish more of his artwork, for it certainly deserves to reach a wider audience. I highly recommend this book. It is certainly a "must-read" in my library!

Book Description
Shortly after the dawn of photography, the unlikely partnership between the respected painter David Octavius Hill and the young engineer Robert Adamson produced some of the most important photographs in the history of the medium. During their brief but prolific association (1843-1848), Hill
and Adamsom experimented with some of the earliest calotype processes, creating hundreds of portraits, staged dramatic photographs, and architectural and landscape images. The Getty Museum holds more than four hundred of their works, forty-seven of which are featured in this latest addition to the
popular In Focus series. This collection of remarkable images also includes commentary on the plates, a chronology of the artists partnership, and an edited transcript of a colloquium on the artists.

Customer Reviews:
Simpsons Comics at its Best!.......2004-06-17
Out of my humongous Comic book library, this comic is one of my favorite. It's not like the other Simpsons Comics that I have. One thing is that this comic seems to have used water color which makes the pages seem more smoother and the pictures more realistic. The Comic contains a whole lot of other single Simpsons Comic Books into this one jampacked Comic. One of my favorite Comics here have to be "The Incredibly Stimulating Life of Sideshow Mel" which has no actual talking going on but it just shows Sideshow Mel going to the laundry and meeting up with an odd looking dog ...it's sort of hard to explain but it actually looks so boring that its amusing. This is a worthy addition to any Comic Book Collection.
'Lisa in Wordland' alone earns this 5 stars.......2003-05-26
As an avid Lisa Simpson fan, I have hunted high and low for Lisa Comics #1:Lisa in Wordland (ca. 1995). I have finally found it in this comic collection. Besides Lisa in Wordland (perhaps the most thought-provoking comic in the Simpsons comics series), I also enjoyed most of the other comics and Matt Groening articles in this volume. Two weak points: The one where Krusty gets the Hollywood job wasn't that funny, and the first comic had a plot IDENTICAL to a TV episode (the Old/New Springfield one). However, I doubt there will be a Lisa Comics #2 anytime soon (Lisa in Numberland would be a good idea, since I AM a math person.)
If you like the Simpsons and comics, you'll like this book!.......2003-04-12
This book is great for any collection. It is fun to read, and the illustrations are so colorful and bright! It's just like watching the TV show, but your reading it! What more can I say?
serch put it well........2002-12-20
It just wasn't very funny.
I agree with pretty much everything serch said.
Not a big laugh to be found here, there's some kay spots though.
The Lisa story is just bad.
Not as Jam-Packed as Simpsons Comics Unchained.......2002-12-15
This book is one of the larger ones--159 pages. Unlike the even bigger book, Unchained, which was over 170 pages of comics and other fun stuff, Royale includes short stories by Matt Groening. These stories are about his childhood (his first bully, cheap haircuts, etc.) that sheds some light on what influenced his creation of those cool Simpsons characters. While the stories are interesting, I'd prefer more comics, fake advertisements, etc. Groening could put his stories in a separate book for those interested in his life. Comic-wise, the book includes shorts featuring Radioactive Man, Krusty the Klown, Bartman, Sideshow Mel, and Itchy & Scratchy. The four full-length comics are as follows:
"Wall or Nothing": The first comic is the funniest. In a fight over Springfield's water supply, residents of upper and lower Springfield start a feud that culminates in a giant wall dividing the town. When visiting his father, Milhouse finds himself on the other side of the wall. Can Bart rescue his friend?
"The Inquisitory Zone": Lisa is excited about a new "educational" kids' play house at the mall. Bart is excited when he discovers some of the attractions likes "Whack the Abandoned Vehicle," "Fun With Saws," and the "Graffiti Area." Wait 'til Lisa finds out whose really behind the Inquisitory Zone.
"Krusty's 11": Hoping to try out his serious acting skills, Krusty stars in his first motion picture. The producers, however, only want Krusty to clown around.
"Lisa's Adventures in Wordland": A very clever comic that can only be appreciated through detailed exploration. How many comics come with references?

Book Description
Where once computers and technology were viewed as great time savers and tools to enable greater profitability, businesses today view technology simply as a cost of doing business. Achieving Process Profitability: Building the IT Profit Center shows that the typical classification of IT as a cost center is wrong, lays out the three canons of IT and shows how to transform the attitudes and perceptions about computers and technology within a business in order to achieve the single, universal and undeniable mission of IT.
Written in an easy-going and down-to-earth style that does not talk down to the reader, Achieving Process Profitability puts powerful and empowering concepts and ideas into action plans. Full of real-world examples and analogies that make it accessible to a CEO or an intern, Achieving Process Profitability will revolutionize your conceptions about computers and technology within business and show you exactly how to build the IT Profit Center.
Customer Reviews:
A good primer, but limited to the school house.......2003-12-15
I've read the book, but cannot recommend it for anything other than the academic world. The environment that the author proceeds from in this book is too limited to make it useful as a real-world guilde to process reengineering.
Comments like, "A business is a collection of processes" can be seen as a valid point, however, discounting the employees and relegating them to the status of mindless automatons limits the usefulness of this book to a Business 101 class.
On a positive note, the author makes a good point that businesses need to review the processes they use and ensure that they are accomplishing these processes in the most efficient manner possible.
While the book could be used for building the case for process engineering/re-engineering, there are better books available for the nuts and bolt of actually doing the process changes.
Leaves the reader wanting for more........2003-11-08
I found the book to be an easy read, touching upon some total quality management principles I would love (perhaps wishfully) to see implemented more in the industry. There are far too few businesses where the Information Systems departments are looked at as profit centers.
I am rereading this book in preparation for passing it on to the management where I work. Although they probably will not agree with what it contains sadly. A recommended read.
IT and how it's SUPPOSED to work........2003-10-27
The book brings to light what IT is SUPPOSED to be doing... helping the business be profitable... not a money pit. This book is TQM 101 mixed with a philosophy of what IT's mission really should be. While it only provides a cursory view of TQM, I think it's better point is the philosophy of what IT should be doing for a business. The author sees IT they way it should be as opposed to the common perception that IT is a cost instead of a benefit.
I liked it well enough that I've passed it on to my management with a recommendation that they read and pay attention to this.
Beginners guide to process management for IT........2003-09-29
I read this book (closer to a booklet than a book) in a few hours. The author does a fairly good job of translating some basic TQM principles as they relate to IT. The book is an easy read but could have used more real world scenarios to emphasize certain points. As far as the philosophy of the author goes, I feel that Greg has highlighted some of the failures that many IT people make in their assumptions as to their role in an organization. (I won't get into great detail as I'll leave other people who may be interested in forming their own opinions.) I've called it the Mainframe Mentality in the past. Build it and they will come has no place in IT anymore. His assumptions as to the role in IT I've feel he got it partially correct, but missed some things as well. Automation of manual process is important, but the I in IT does stand for something that the author failed to talk about at all. There is another area that I feel that was missed entirely. The importance of have a strong, flexible and reliable infrastructure. Most of the focus at the end of the book was (to me) from the point of view of an application developer and most of the points are valid. However, developers must have an strong infrastructure to develop on. This is one of the most difficult concepts for IT to sell to the money managers.
Overall I'd rate the booklet "Fair". For those not familiar with TQM, ITIL or Six Sigma it is a basic introduction to some of those concepts. For those who what to delve deeper into those concepts, I'd suggest reading "The Deming Management Method" and "The 5 Pillars of TQM". The ITIL website also has information on IT Service Management. http://www.ogc.gov.uk/index.asp?id=2261
Practical IT in Operation.......2003-09-23
I found this book an excellent read. As someone trying to apply IT in real-time, this book is a first. It cuts through to the core of implementation - great practical approach to getting the job done.

Book Description
This book presents results of a cross-national research project on self-employment in eleven advanced economies and demonstrates how and why the practice is reemerging in modern societies. While traditional forms of self-employment, such as skilled crafts work and shop keeping, are in decline, they are being replaced by self-employment in both professional and unskilled occupations. Differences in self-employment across societies depend on the extent to which labor markets are regulated and the degree to which intergenerational family relationships are a primary factor structuring social organization.
For each of the eleven countries analyzed, the book highlights the extent to which social background, educational attainment, work history, family status, and gender affect the likelihood that an individual will enter--and continue--a particular type of self-employment. While involvement with self-employment is becoming more common, it is occurring for individuals in activities that are more diverse, unstable and transitory than in years past.

Book Description
The demise of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s radically and permanently altered dominant twentieth-century notions of a "balance of power." With the competing policy options of international cooperation and unilateral military, political, and economic dominance, the United States continues to struggle with its new role as the world's only superpower in the new century. The events of September 11, 2001, served to further polarize political debates, with some policy makers emphasizing a multilateral diplomatic approach to fighting terrorism while others demand immediate and possibly unilateral military action to preserve American interests and the existing world order.
In this groundbreaking book, policy expert Colin S. Gray presents a clear and sophisticated argument that the United States isand should continue to bethe world's guardian. The Sheriff: America's Defense of the New World Order sets forth a strategic analysis with nine basic themes as guides to where, when, and how America should be involved in international security affairs. Gray's constructive critique of recent trends in national security is comprehensive, rooting defense issues and prospective solutions in both U.S. national security policy and the emerging international security environment.
In an era marked by terrorism, political unrest, and the increased interdependence of the world community, Gray describes and prescribes America's continuing role as "sheriff." According to Gray, world order is not self-enforcing and nations do not always act reasonably or predictably. Therefore, Gray concludes, the U.S. serves itself by selectively serving the world. He argues that military, strategic, and political effectiveness are separate issues and that goals for each of these areas should be effectively articulated to the American public and the world community. Additionally, he maintains that technology alone does not dictate military success and that the current transformation of the U.S. military must be engineered in the context of a well-defined global strategy.
Essential reading for understanding the changing dynamics of a twenty-first century world, The Sheriff is a hard-nosed look at the fundamental workings of world politics and an explanation of the necessity and scope of America's guardian role of today and for decades to come.
Customer Reviews:
Latest chapter in a 2,500-year old book........2006-05-13
I feel monumentally ignorant not to have known of Gray, or,
at least, not to have registered his work more securely in the
thoughts. As an admirer of George Kennan and his several
tours d'horizon, as well as of Robert D Kaplan's fantastic
journalism, I kept trying to find an approach that would tie
such work together. I have always heard the word "strategic"
kicked about, but this uncluttered gem makes it clear what
it means, means for the United States, and means for world
stability, all the while admitting that strategy is not easy.
I suggest that you dip into this book, and when you emerge,
you shall need to own it.

This explosive examination of the Saud dynasty, whose greed and corruption have brought Saudi Arabia to the brink of bankruptcy--and the world to the edge of disaster--"raises important questions, not the least of which is whether Washington can afford to blithely close its eyes to developments within Saudi Arabia" (Newsday). of photos.
Customer Reviews:
Horror stories.......2005-09-16
Full of horror stories - this book refers to the situation in 1994,when the first edition was issued, with a very short foreword describing the present context.
If all the contents are true,we will get a disheartening opinion of Western statemen, of their shortsightedness, their servility and their cupidity
Perhaps,we know now who is "the prince of this world" alluded in John 12,31
Interesting Read.......2005-06-26
I found that Said did a wonderful job here in making a compelling presentation of his view of the "House of Saud".
Yes, this book is heavily critical of the current Saudi kingdom, but I think he is a very careful author and explains things very well.
I find what he is saying to be believable and he definately is very knowledgable on the subject. It definately was worth the read, especially since I am interested in the happenings in the Middle East.
It really makes you wonder why the U.S.A. supports Saudi Arabia.
over the top, but rivetting.......2005-05-24
This book is completely over the top, and refuses to see that ANYTHING in Saudi society is worthwhile. The author simply despises the Al-Saud -- every last prince and princess. He seems to have spent only a little time there, and generalizes too much on the basis of someone he happened to bump into. But as an expose of the extreme lifestyles of the royal family, it is unmatched. You just can't stop reading, because you know on every page that's left there's going to be yet another of those gobsmaking revelations about whores or drink or financial corruption. Could do with an update to take account of post 9/11 US-Saudi relations. Apparently, when it first appeared the Al-Saud did everything they could to try and stop this book's publication. Luckily for us, they failed... Buy it with John R Bradley's SAUDI ARABIA EXPOSED: INSIDE A KINGDOM IN CRISIS, which I have just finished reading, if you want more balanced and sympathetic insights...
A barbaric regime empowered by western leaders.......2004-09-24
As America is in the midst of 'liberating' Iraq, perhaps one should consider this book.
It details how the House of Saud were a barbaric family, with little public support, on the verge of being terminated forever. They were viewed as barbaric by other ruling classes in the Arabian peninsula. However the ruling classes in Britain obviously felt differently and decided to give these barbarians money and arms to make them rulers of 'Saudi' Arabia. Once the British were out of the scene, the Americans stepped in allowing the House of Saud to consolidate their power. Why did they do this? Oil and strategic power. In other words the House of Saud were/are a puppet government. Who are the losers? The Arabian people who must put up with corruption and a backward and restrictive religion called Wahhabism (a religion that has always been a minority in the area). So much for western governments liberating oppressed people ruled by barbaric regimes!
I am sure a similar picture is true of many other countries in the Middle East.
This book has been made more relevant than ever by the recent invasion of Iraq. Once the book has been read, the reader will be in no doubt of the real motives of America in the Middle East and will be saddened by the fact that in the western world we have not really moved on since the 1920's with regards to foreign policy.
Middle Eastern Ax-Grinding.......2004-09-18
This book will certainly appeal to people who want to bash Saudi Arabia. The author, a Lebanese, shows a particularly Levantine distain for the Saudis. He considers them creatures from the sand and thus colors his entire commentary with more venom than really necessary.
Are there corrupt members of the Saudi ruling family? Certainly. Is the family, as a whole, corrupt? No. Many are pious, charitable, open-minded and liberal.
Aburish takes up too much time discussing what amounts to no more than street gossip and not enough on what's really going on.
He also factually misrepresents the early 20th C. in Saudi Arabia. It was a harsh place with a harsh justice. Feuding tribes slaughtered others; they did not "count coup" as did American Plains Indians. They fought viciously and were fought against viciously. It wasn't only Abdel Aziz who put his enemies to the sword--members of his own family were similarly treated by both other tribes and the Ottoman Turks.
It's really a pity that many will buy this book expecting to "get the goods" on the Saudis. What they are getting, instead, is spite expressed by a "civilized" Arab for his "dirty, sandy cousins". It's a frequent lament: "Oh, how could this uncultured Saudis have the luck to be sitting on all that oil, while we, the cultured elite, have nothing!"

Fans of country style will enjoy these birdhouse-themed pieces. Projects comprise both wooden birdhouses of various shapes adorned with rustic designs (sunflowers, wildflowers, ivy, quilt patterns, stonework, fences, and other motifs), and an assortment of items (storage chest, lap desk, cabinet, mailbox, metal buckets, T-shirts) emblazoned with birdhouse designs. Brief general directions explain basic decorative painting techniques; painting patterns are included for each of the 29 step-by-step projects. --Amy Handy
Book Description
Many of these 29 easy-to-make projects work as household decorations. Each design features a full-page photograph of the finished product, instructions, patterns, and diagrams. There’s a “Floral and Hardies” house with glued-on cutouts, a shingled wildflower home with topiaries, and a “church birdhouse” for bird worshippers. Or light up your living room with a birdhouse lamp. Plus: a village of other birdhouses to build.
