Love this book !.......2007-08-10

Of all the photography books I have read, and/or have sitting on my shelf, this is still my favorite.
Yes, the technology is outdated.
Yes, the corporate gigs he shoots are past the limits most photographers will ever experience.
But the techniques he uses, thoughts behind his style, and photos he creates are timeless.
This book may not be the best for the amateur photographer. But as an experienced photographer, I love flipping through the book to get inspiration, ideas and options.
And, the shoots he outlines in the book are even easier in today's digital world of Pocket Wizards and multiple lighting options.
If you are to the point in your career (or hobby) where you want to become more creative in your lighting, you won't regret purchasing this fine book.

The author gives a little bit of flash "basics" and gives a lot of great ideas on how to light different locations. I would recommend this book even to just get different ideas. FYI: No digital photography information,

Very useful book, full of practical details and advice. Only (slight) problem is that most examples are for film-based photography, i.e. not a lot of digital-specific advice. Still, an extremely informative book.

The best, most carefully written book on location lighting I've read. Needs to be updated for digital (all references are to film and the associated color correction issues). Can be skimmed for the great examples, each explained in detail, or read through to get his narrative as well. Most of the work has been for national magazines, so it is slick and impressive. I will read and re-read this book.

Multiple Polaroids Teach the Effects of Changes in Lighting.......2000-06-20

I disagree with the review below titled "Limited book." As an intermediate amateur photographer, I learned a lot from "Lighting Secrets..." Virtually all the 31 shoots are indeed creative. I have not seen multiple Polaroids showing the effects of changes in lighting (pp. 46-133) in any other book. Freeman's "...Studio Manual" has only a few pages devoted to lighting. My only complaints about "Lighting Secrets..." are: (A) The title should have the word "studio," since the book does not cover natural lighting. (B) Chapter Two (pp.17-43) on the "Whys of Lighting" shows only a single lighting diagram and a single photo from each shoot. (C) The images on pages 109 and 125, manipulated using 1990 computer technology, are not very attractive. (D) The photo on p. 113 (identical to the cover) should be swapped with the photos on p. 115. (E) It would have been nice to know the film, camera, and lens for each shoot.

I own many lighting books. Although not a beginners how to book, it does show the shots that were taken before the final shot. This is unique! The reader is able to see and read about the small changes that are made in working towards perfection. Most other books show the final shot with minimal verbage. This book discuses very detailed lighting adjustments that are made and the sequences of shots relating to them

Limited book........1998-07-09

I'd rate it with 1/2 star if I could! If you read the Booknews Inc. review above, you'll think that the book shows you "how to" do anything you want, but that's not what the book is about. Very limited! It shows you "how to" waste your time and money in extensive so-called "explanations" of few and uncreative shots. It is NOT a step by step book, and it is NOT meant to teach you anything. Everything you could eventually learn from this book, you would learn better if you read Michael Freeman's The Photographer's Studio Manual. Period.

Scott & Jean's Wedding was the best..........2005-04-02

I'm relatively new to comic books. I've only been reading them for the past 10 years so I missed out on a lot of "golden" era of comics. It's interesting to see how far comics have come in storytelling from the 60's (when Mr. Fantastic married the Invisible Woman). The stories seemed so one-dimensional (good guys vs bad guys with women waiting for a man to save them). They are a little bit laughable but interesting at the same time.

We get to read the wedding stories of more than just what the back of the TPB says. We see Reed and Sue from the Fantastic Four, Wasp and Yellowjacket from the Avengers, Quicksilver and Crystal from the Avengers, Betty Ross and Bruce Banner from the Hulk, Mary Jane Watson and Spiderman, and Scott Summers and Jean Grey from the X-Men.

I think the X-Men story was the best wedding story (but then again, I'm partial to the X-Men so maybe I'm biased).

Labour markets are differentiated by occupation and types of training, and these submarkets are seldom in equilibrium. This disequilibrium -- shortages and surpluses in labour markets -- is often attributed to a lack of flexibility in wage structures, the limited possibility for substitution between submarkets, and the high adjustment costs. Understanding childhood.......2003-04-21

This book is a new project between John Wiley and the Open Unigersity based on the course on "Childhood" at that unimersity. This is the first book in a series of four dealing with childhood and youth in a modern perspective, but with a strong historical background.
The editors and the contributors are all affiliated with the Centre for Childhood, Development and Learning at the Open University and they have accomplished a great task with this book.
It was a real pleasure to read this book with its colorful illustrations and also the many questions asked in an educational and instructive way with further resourse material. You really feel like taken the actual course at Open University and many questions to be answered throughout the reading
The book has six extensive chapters on: what is a child ?, childhood in time and place, the child in development, children and rights, gendered childhoods and innocence and experience. You will find topics and information on how childhood was looked upon throughout history and how science on child development started and where we stand today. There is a wealth of information from recent international research with a pleasant lay-out.
Each chapter was clear and in a straightforward language and this book can be warmly recommended to professionals working with children, in fact even every adult with children can learn a lot from this book.

Driving south down I-110 from the Baton Rouge airport you won't know it but you will be passing the field of a battle fought long ago, August 5th, 1862. As you near the North 22nd Street Exit get ready for a trip through history. At the curve at Memorial Stadium look carefully and you may see the foggy outlines of Lieutenant Fountleroy barking orders as he unlimbers his Confederate cannon. In the curve on the left the white triangles you see are the tents of the 14th Maine Infantry Regiment. You are now headed straight toward the capitol building. See fresh earthworks thrown up around the Indian mound. Look! In front of the Governor's Mansion are two Howitzers and nervous infantry of the 4th Wisconsin and the 9th Connecticut. They are waiting for battle and listening carefully for the sound of the long roll.

At your speed you are now at North Street. In the far distance to your left are nine cannon lined up wheel to wheel at the old Orphanage. Out of the corner of your right eye you can see something rising over the levee and heading over your head. These are huge eleven-inch cannon balls from the ironclad ram U.S.S. Essex. They are exploding around North 22nd Street.

Stay off the bridge. Keep straight. Slow down. Look to your right. You may be able to see flags waving off the masts of Union gunboats on the river. One mile to your left, in a deteriorating neighborhood, a battle is raging. Let down your window and listen to the rumble of Yankee cannon. Hear the sharp barking of Rebel cannon. The sound is different because they are pointed at you!

At 60 mph history will fly by you. Look left down Government Street and see retreating Yankees running toward you. When you get to City Park Lakes look to your left and you may see Colonel H. W. Allen shot off his horse by a blast of canister. Near Perkins road there are wagons filled with wounded Rebels headed you way!

In the last three minutes you have passed a long ago battleground. Slow down, take a deep breath, and read about the Battle of Baton Rouge.

The Battle of Baton Rouge -- Really, The Confederates Lost.......2007-01-20

Having read two other published versions of this battle, plus the same personal recollections as the author, I find he has carried over some of the same mythos as the contemporary newspaper reporters of the time. Two glaring errors are: 1)the denial that the 21st Indiana Infantry used breechloading Merrill rifles and 2)the part played by Nim's Massachusetts Battery. The 21st Indiana had between 128 to 131 Merrill rifles in their battle line on August 5, 1862. Nim's battery did not play an important part in the action until very late in the battle, when they helped repulse the final charge of the Confederates on the Yankee Center and Left (not the Federal right). The 4th Louisiana attacked the Jackass Battery, improvised by the 21st Indiana. Also, a lot of battle and individual personal detail is given without without citing any sources for what these people did or said; therefore their activities are fiction and should not be confused with fact.

I will offer the disclaimer that Dr. Richey is my father in law and that I did offer a few comments on the manuscript so I have some personal investment in this book. That said, Dr. Richey provides a detailed look at an often overshadowed part of the Civil War through his exhaustive genealogical and historical research. This book will be a great boon to anyone interested in the Battle of Baton Rouge and lower Mississipi operations in general. The appendix and notes alone represent a great collection of information sources and jumping off points for further research.

Short and Concise.......2002-01-03

Spedale gives a very quick rundown of the Union capture of Baton Rouge in 1862, the Confederate counterattack, and the aftermath. More of a brief engagement than a battle, the back and forth between Union and CSA troops left much of the city in ruins and empty as both sides soon pulled back to more defensible sites. What makes the slim volume quite nice, however, is the myriad pictures that run throughout -- both sketches and photographs from the 1800s and modern photographs of the sites as they are today.
