A book for sailor wannabees...like me.......2007-05-16
I picked this book up before leaving on a cruise and sat on my balcony deck to read much of it.
When I got home, I read in it each night before bed.
It's a beautifully written book, has much adventure and describes the landscapes and ocean well. These men had to reach down deep to do the things they did and I admire them.
I enjoyed the book and am glad I got to read it.
Now I'm going to read Capt. Joshua Slocum's book..."Sailing Alone Around the World."
seamanship.......2007-01-04
an excellent book for anyone who is fascinated by the outer hebrides as i am.
Do NOT Sail with this guy!.......2005-08-09
The text recounts a voyage that the author undertakes from the southwest of England, to the Atlantic coast of Ireland, northward to the Hebrides and the Orkneys, and finally to the Faroe Islands.
This is a genuinely annoying book. As others have noted, there is, with a few exceptions, very little description of the lands and coasts traveled to. Mostly the author waxes philosophical about this or that aspect of our relationship with nature, embodied here by the sea. But that's not the problem. The problem is that, ultimately, the author proves to be a very un-admirable individual - someone that you would NOT want to sail with, much less depend on, in challenging circumstances. The real hero of the voyage (in my opnion) is George Fairhurst, an experienced professional sailor whom the author employs to skipper his boat, the Auk. By the end you come to sympathize with Fairhurst's assessment that the author is merely a "plucker": the sort of individual who floats from experience to experience, depending entirely on others to keep the boat sailing (Fairhurst), or the home and family going (the author's wife Sarah), while assuming none of the risk. You may consider it brave of Nicolson to reveal enough about what happened on Auk to allow the reader to form such a negative judgment of him. Personally I find this simply a species of the same instinct that causes him to climb three miles barefoot over sharp rocks to a hilltop holy place, despite being an avowed agnostic. It's self-indulgence masquerading as self-revelation. It's solely about the personal experience, and not about the truth.
More philosophy than travelogue.......2005-05-29
SEAMANSHIP is author Adam Nicolson's account of his 1,500-mile voyage along the outer fringes of the British Isles aboard the 42-foot ketch "Auk".
Perhaps I should have realized the thrust of Nicolson's narrative sooner. Indeed, as soon as I opened the front cover, seen the extent of the voyage as depicted on two end page maps, and then noted that this small hardcover is only 177 pages long with relatively large print. I mean, if one is sailing from Falmouth in Cornwall across the Celtic Sea to Ireland's southern tip, then back across to Cornwall, north to southwestern Wales, across the Celtic Sea again, up along Ireland's west coast, across to Scotland, up through the Inner and Outer Hebrides, east to the Orkney Islands, and finally ending far to the northwest in the Faeroes, how much description of so many places can be jammed into such a small space? Disappointingly little, if that's what you're looking for.
Rather than a travelogue in the traditional sense, SEAMANSHIP is more a ruminative consideration of Sailing Man's relationship to the Sea and his Ship, and, in this volume specifically, Adam's success (or not) in manly bonding with the Auk's skipper, George. Nicolson's philosophical bent is well represented by the following passage:
"The nature of the voyage is set before you cast off. A sea passage is shaped by the boat's time attached to the land. Every moment at sea is dependent on, and even twinned to, a moment in harbor. What a boat sails on and in is not only the ocean and the wind but the days, weeks, and months tied up alongside."
And, using a mixed metaphor:
"That is why death at sea is such a casual affair. Death has no need to approach ... It doesn't come rolling on like a swell, proceeding grandly towards you with its bosom before it and its intentions clear. Death is already there, a few feet away, resting beneath the table, its head on its paws and a smile in its eyes, happy to accept the scraps that fall."
I love the landscape of the British Isles more than any other place on Earth, especially its wild, wave and wind-ravished margins. Here, the author's description of the ancient monastic island off the Irish coast, Skellig Michael, almost brought tears of longing to my eyes. I wanted to visit the place myself - now. But, for me, there wasn't enough of such descriptive power between this book's covers to satisfy a raging wanderlust.
SEAMANSHIP is far from being a bad read. Whereas I'm only awarding 3.5 stars (translated to four by an inadequate rating system), one more in tune with Nicolson's lyrical prose will emphatically award five and excoriate me for my shallow obtuseness. This is a book you must read and decide upon for yourself.
Not A Travel Story, A Love Story About a Trip.......2005-05-13
This book is not, as you might expect from the title, a book on how to make the boat go where you want it. Instead it is a love story. It's about a love for the sea, for the boat, for life itself.
Nominally it's the story of a voyage along the Atlantic coasts of England, Ireland, Scotland, and the islands north of there. It's partly the story of the trip; it's partly a philosophy of life, of man putting himself and his wind propelled boat against the elements.
Mr. Nicolson has a way with the written word that makes his prose almost like poetry or music in the hands of another. I'm not a boating person, but it almost makes me want to go find a sailboat.
Delightful story.

Book Description
B2B presents the first definitive blueprint for creating a profitable business-to-business e-commerce strategy. Showcasing successful initiatives designed by industry leaders such as Cisco Systems and Dell Computer, as well as lesser-known trailblazers such as VerticalNet and eCredit.com, Michael Cunningham clearly identifies the key issues in assessing opportunities, building technological and organizational capabilities, and designing a successful business-to-business strategy using the full power of the Internet.
Customer Reviews:
Thorough and useful information.......2006-01-27
Michael J. Cunningham, founder and CEO of the Harvard Computing Group, has provided strategies and best practices to launch a business-to-business E-Commerce solution for your organization. Financial transfers, online exchanges, auctions, delivery of products and services, supply-chain activities and integrated business networks are all examples of B2B e-commerce. Business-to-business E-commerce is a rapidly growing market. The author guides you through the process from transforming an intranet into an extranet, using portals and digital procurement systems, finding partners, selecting applications and software and finally designing architecture and infrastructure for a B2B business. He has also included a list of best practices used by successful B2B E-commerce companies.
Update on the first edition.......2002-10-01
The revised and updated version of B2B (paperback edition) reflects the changes in the market since the first version was published. As the author of the book, I would like to thank both the input from the press, editors, industry analysts and users of B2B technologies for their experiences and knowledge to keep this title current. I hope that others still find this a useful blueprint for the development and delivery of their stategies.
B2B - Bible........2001-04-18
Charles Stevens, this is possibly the best B2B book I have ever read. Cunningham provides a clear-cut approach to B2B business. He clearly defines differences and avoids excessive jargon making this book ideal for the experiences business professional or anyone new to the field. It was key in developing the fundamentals and our approaches of our own corporate B2B plan. As sacrilegious as it may be this book has been our B2B Bible. 75% of business - to - business transactions for computers, electronics, and storage are done online. There is a need to develop B2B commerce, improving systems and methods are crucial. People and corporations are hesitant about investing in the Internet because of the current tension in the ecommerce market highlighted by the media. Let it be understood that the failings of high-profile corporations should not be a reflection on the B2B market. Even considering this media-driven pseudo-bear market the estimated revenue from B2B business for 2004 exceeds 3 trillion dollars. Pick up this book, at the very least flip through it at the bookstore (and take notes).
B2B: It's about creating value.......2001-04-12
Many organizations today are focused on the bad news in the B2B markets. Failing exchanges, dot com crashes and vendor and consulting layoffs. In my experience, B2B is and will be a potent weapon the the development and optimization of business processes and technology to support new and better ways of conducting business. Collaborative technologies, widespread affordable communication and faster to implement solutions will allow winning firms to take the lead in this segment of the market. While some start-ups have failed, most are because they were not adding enough value to their clients and partners in the first place. B2B technology, tools and platforms are providing the opportunity for organizations to improve and optimize their position in the market. There are good examples of start-ups, existing businesses and others moving to leverage the Internet sprinkled throughout this book. Winning strategies are built by companies following good business practices and being innnovative in their approach to the market. This book was obviously created as a blueprint for individuals and organizations that are looking for a path through this maze. The examples are based on strategies that have worked and produced excellent results for the firm's using them. Like all technologies and strategies there are winners and losers. Emulating winners is still the best way that we know to reduce risk at the early stages in the marketplace. This book helps others achieve this goal, by providing guidance on the good, bad and the ugly of this complex subject. An powerful and comprehensive read.
An Informative Guide to B2B.......2001-04-09
I was extremely pleased with this informative book. Cunningham clearly explained the ins and outs of B2B in a clear and thourough fashion, making this book a great guide as to how to improve B2B strategy most effectively. It was a superb introduction to B2B strategy, as Cunningham was able to address the many issues associated with B2B and instruct on the best ways to use B2B to the advantage of your business. A comprehensible guide to understanding the newest revolution in international commerce. Great as an introduction for those new to B2B, as well as a guide for experienced business professionals looking for a tool to enhance their commerce.

Book Description
Corporatism or Competition? is concerned with the importance of institutions in determining labor market outcomes. There has been a great deal of research in the past ten years comparing wage differences, wage movements and employment behavior in different countries, none of which has been brought together in an organized and coherent fashion. The aim of this book is to fill the gap. The book is destined to become a standard work in labor economics.

Book Description
To what extent have different sectors of the political economy in Scotland and northern England responded to Thatcherism's determined attempt to replace the corporatism of the 1970s with the discipline of the market and a competitive environment? This book discusses the distinctive political,
economic, and social arrangements within Scotland, and identifies failures by public and private sectors to adjust to the changes that have occurred since 1979 as well as successful attempts to create a more competitive and enterprising environment.

Customer Reviews:
At risk seen as "at promise" -.......2003-10-18
I recently heard Mr. Stuart speak at a teacher convention - giving a brief overview of this book. Not very often do you get new insights into the theories of education and the art of mentoring. Usually teaching seminars are just tune-ups on the basics. There was a lot of truth that seemed intuitive in Mr. Stuart's findings, but his approach is definitely unique, and I greatly appreciated hearing his thoughts. I think his ideas are useful for teachers who struggle with at-risk students (both the privileged and non-privileged types), and as far as I can tell that's pretty much all of us. I highly recommend this book as a great resource for teachers who are interested in growing in their ability to mentor students effectively.
A Fresh Perspective.......2003-10-02
What an enlightening message these two authors have to share! Parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles will want to get this book into the hands of all adults who impact the lives of the children they love. Truly this book offers a fresh perspective and a hope for all with a concern for kids and their impact on our society in the future. As a parent, I have been motivated to continually examine my parenting tactics in light of these concepts. This is a "must read" for parents and educators alike.
Not just for parents.......2003-09-24
This book was instrumental in changing my parenting paradigm, but it's message is not limited to parents. It can speak to anyone who relates to children and teens. The book advocates the value and promise of every child, regardless of that child's exposure to aspects of the environment that we, as a society, have labelled "risky". But don't expect a lot of feel-good psycho-babble. This view of child-relating is clear and challenging. The "at promise perspective" has given me a renewed hope, not only for my own kids, but for myself, and for those I previously would have viewed as "hopeless". This changed outlook has prompted me to react so much more positively to adverse circumstances. It is a concept that just makes sense!
Book Description
At the time of the Second Empire, under Napoleon III, the French army, elevated from tactful obscurity, was re-modelled on Napoleonic lines. This army first fought in the Crimea, and then against Austria. Later, In Mexico, they had a disastrous adventure while in Europe Prussia was fast emerging as a challenge to France's military pre-eminence. Together with Austria, Bismarck first crushed Denmark before turning on Austria herself. The victory at Sadowa in 1866 stunned Europe, and in Paris Napoleon and his advisers set to thinking of a way to counter this new threat. In this first of two volumes looking at the French Army of the Franco-Prussian War, Stephen Shann and Louis Delperier examine the history, organisation and weapons of the French Imperial troops.
Customer Reviews:
Useful addition to the subject.......2006-03-21
Unlike many titles in the Osprey series that only deal with the uniforms as objects ( colours, buttons, insigna, etc.), this one is a good and short synthesis about the republican army of 1870-71. No such book was available before. The only noticeable defect is that there is no bibliography.
The army described in the book was raised by the new republican government of France in 1870 to try to repel invasion by the Prussian and German armies, after the two main French Imperial armies had surrendered at Sedan and Metz and the Second Empire had collapsed as a consequence.
(NB: The Imperial army is covered in The French Army of the Franco-Prussian War - part 1).
The republican army was composed of the remnants of the regular army that had not surrendered, as well as the " Garde Mobile" and "Garde Nationale mobilisee" ( made up of people who had drawn a " good number" and were not conscripted in the regular army; they were untrained civilans) and various volunteer or partisan forces.
This books explains clearly and simply what each component of this army was made of, how it was raised, their equipment, weapons and uniforms, their battle records.
At the time, republican France took American civil war armies as their model; they had also been citizen armies raised in haste. Only their opponents, the German armies, were revolutionizing warfare at the time, with their very organized general staff, officer and non-commissioned officer corps, mobilization of well-trained reserve troops, as well as a superior artillery ( Krupp breech-loading steel cannon).
The improvised French army did not stand a chance and all it did in the end was to save the honour of France, that had been badly tarnished by the disasters at Sedan and Metz.
As in every book in the Man-at-arms series there is a series of colour-plates illustrating the uniforms worn by combatants.
The uniforms of this army were quite colourful and the artist has done a good job at reconstructing them.
For more pictures of those uniforms and the battles of the time, the paintings of Edouard Detaille and Alphonse de Neuville, the two most famous French military painters of the time, are THE SOURCE. They are reproduced in many books but the few monographs covering their work in pictures are in French and are very difficult to find.
I would however warmly recommend an excellent recent book by Francois Robichon: L'Armee francaise vue par les peintres, 1870-1914, available from Amazon.fr.
For a thorough account of the war, you can refer to "The Franco-Prussian war" by Michael Howard and a few other titles.
republican armys had no chance against the german troops.......2000-11-12
The Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 was a dark page in French history, and ended with the destruction of the Second Empire,But even after the surrender and abdication of Napoleon III, the french army continued to battle in the ranks of the Republican armies. The Turcos,The chasseur's d'Afrique,The foreign Legion, The infanterie Legere d'Afrique and the Spahis with a detachment of Papal Zouaves which was dispatched by Pius IX to aid France in the conflict were ready to continue the fighting. Despite the disastrous result of the war, the republican troops took the arms and decide not to surrender but The newly raised republican armys had no chance against the german troops. In January Paris surrendered. This Book covers the last part of the Second Empire with information on the uniforms, eigth full color plates with black and white photos. If you are interesting in the FRANCO-PRUSSIAN WAR you can also consider the Next Titles The Debacle by Emile Zola, Art, War and Revolution in France, 1870-1871, and a Beautiful title from the master of illustration L'Armee Francaise : An Illustrated History of the French Army, 1790-1885(Edoaurd Detaille)
Great set of plates and photos.......2000-11-12
The Second Empire has become a more and more popular period of study for many uniform and military historians. This is the first of two books depicting uniforms of Napoleon III's Imperial Guard troops. the Zouaves,Voltigeurs of the Imperial Guard and many more plates from the Imperial troops
In July 1870, France declared war on Prussia in part over a disagreement about a Prussian prince accepting the crown of Spain. By September 1870, a French army had been defeated, Emperor Napoleon III captured at Sedan, France declared a republic, and Paris under siege. In January 1871, Wilhelm I of Prussia was crowned Kaiser Wilhelm I of a unified Germany at Versailles, Paris fell, and France surrendered, losing Alsace and Lorraine and forced to pay huge reparations. Otto von Bismarck, Chancellor of Prussia since 1862, and now Germany, subsequently sought to keep France isolated to prevent the recovery of Alsace and Lorraine.
The Second Empire, under Napoleon III, was a reaction against the bourgeois age of the previous ruler King Louis Philippe in spirit as well as in deed. The army, elevated from tactful obscurity, was re-modelled on Napoleonic lines, and its neglected iconography revived in the form of the eagle, the crowned 'N' and the Imperial bee. What was needed to complete the resurrection was victory in the field. It is hardly surprising that Napoleon and the army were mindful of the great Napoleonic traditions and were anxious to emulate them. Their first real opportunity came with the Crimean War, in which, despite a muddled campaign, the army acquitted itself well. In 1859 it was again successful, against the Austrians this time, with costly victories at Magenta and Solferino. Their next adventure, unfortunately, ended in a humiliating withdrawal, after a protracted anti-guerrilla struggle in Mexico. Meanwhile, back in Europe, Prussia was fast emerging as a challenge to France's military pre-eminence. In concert with Austria, Bismarck first crushed Denmark before turning on Austria herself.
Remember there are two volumes this is the Imperial troops there is also the republican troops
Book Description
Since the collapse of the French Army in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, military strategists and officials have recognized the critical importance of mobilization and concentration to the outcome of armed conflicts. This study breaks new ground in the study of military history by providing a reconstruction of the French mobilization in 1870. Thomas Adriance demonstrates that the French defeat was largely due to their inability to match Prussia's mobilization and exploit Prussian concentration blunders. A major contribution to our understanding of the reasons for France's costly defeat in 1870, The Last Gaiter Button also sheds new light on the general importance of mobilization and concentration in the conduct of modern warfare.

Given the notorious difficulty of photographing rainforest birds, this book represents a major achievement. It is an ideal volume for travelers to the region as well as for all bird lovers.

birds of southeat asia - a photoguide book. .......2007-03-28
This is excellent guide book to have if ever you in southeat asia.
Not the book for the serious birder.......2003-04-19
While it is nice to see the birds in the flesh with real-life pictures of them, it is certainly not pratical for use in the field.
Some of the pictures are poorly taken and it is highly difficult if not impossible to identify certain birds. Some of the images are back-lit, giving a silhouette of the bird!
There is no proper classification and very little info given of the birds - how the juveniles look like, breeding plumage, male/female plumage etc.
I suppose it is a good book for the casual birder who would like to know what's chirping outside his apartment window or chalet in the wilderness. It also comes with some interesting information on where to go birding to catch wetland or passerine birds etc.
I must commend Strange though for all his efforts into going into the field to capture these pictures - all pictures in the book were taken by Strange - good job Strange!

Interesting sampling of about half of Borneo's 580 species.......2005-04-03
Not a comprehensive guide by any means, this book nevertheless offers valuable info on most of the species an average birder is likely to encounter. There is one major plus behind photos rather than traditional illustrations: you get to see habitat. Right off, just by the picture, you know where to find a leafbird: in the bright green leaves high up in the canopy; you know the frogmouths will be down low camoflaged with the brown leaves; you get the idea that Bar-winged Flycatcher-Shrikes like palms... despite the fact no specific mention is made in the alongside text of preferred trees.
