Book Description
In this groundbreaking volume, conventional assumptions about one of England’s greatest and most influential classical architects are turned on their head. Traditionally, Inigo Jones has been looked upon as an isolated, even old-fashioned, figure in European architecture, still espousing the Palladian ideals of the 16th century when European contemporaries were turning to the Baroque. Yet an investigation of contemporary European architecture and of Jones’s buildings belies this impression, demonstrating that Jones must be viewed in the context of a European-wide, early-17th-century classicist movement.
Giles Worsley examines the full range of Jones’s architecture, from humble stable to royal palace. Worsley shows that key motifs that have been seen as proof of Jones’s Palladian loyalties—particularly the Serliana, the portico, and the centrally planned villa—have a much older and deeper meaning as symbols of sovereignty. The book transforms our understanding not only of Inigo Jones but also of the architecture of his time.

Book Description
In 1971, when the author enrolled in the Yale School of Art as an aspiring photographer, his principal aim was to learn all he could from one of the leading and most admired American photographers of this century, Walker Evans. Once Evans accepted Jerry Thompson as a student, they developed an extremely close working relationship as well as a personal friendship. At Yale, at Evans's Connecticut home in Old Lyme, and during a number of field trips to other parts of the country, Thompson was always close at hand, helping in the darkroom, fetching and carrying, mounting prints for exhibitions, driving, dealing with the archives that were the accumulation of almost forty years of work, and absorbing all the time what the articulate Evans had to say about his interests, his intellectual curiosity, and the basis of his approach to the art of photography. By the time Evans's health deteriorated and he died in 1975, Thompson had become deeply involved with his idol, learning as much about Evans's foibles and eccentricities as he did about the man's genius. As a result, Thompson's account of those last four years gives us a precious insight into the mind and sensibilities of a great man. On a smaller scale, this is as enlightening as James Boswell's memories of Samuel Johnson or Eckermann's of Goethe. To remind the reader of some of Evans's most famous photographs that are discussed in the book, a number are reproduced here, along with informal photographs of him at home and a sampling of his late interest in color Polaroid photography, published here for the first time. In combination with an unusually sensitive text, this is a book of great interest not only to photographers and those interested in photography but also to all who respond to biography and the analysis of character.
Customer Reviews:
A highly recommended book for anyone interested in Walker Evans.......2005-10-26
This is a thoughtful, and at times amusing, book
of the latter years of Walker Evans. It gives an insightful
look at both the artist and the man. I thoroughly enjoyed
this book.
Walker Evans.......2000-07-15
This book gives an excellent example of Walker Evans. It shows the reader not only his style but also his feelings. The photos prove that Walker Evans is one of the greatest photographers of all time.
A personal and touching account of the artist's last years.......1998-06-25
The Last Years of Walker Evans Jerry L. Thompson Thames & Hudson, 1997
Review by Sean Flynt
The last two decades have been good to students and fans of Walker Evans, one of the most important artists ever to work in the medium of photography. We've enjoyed significant (and expensive!) retrospective volumes, reprints of Evans's books, and at least one significant biography. It's appropriate attention to an enormous talent most often represented by images of Alabama tenant farm families, vernacular American architecture, and the earnest artifacts of everyday life.
Although Evans is in no immediate danger of being Ansel Adams-ized, with poster-size reproductions of his work available at every shopping mall, it's not difficult to find his work. Surprisingly, it is more difficult to find thorough biographical information about the artist. Belinda Rathbone's recent contribution in this area, Walker Evans: Message From the Interior, offered cradle-to-grave coverage of Evans's life, but seemed somewhat cold and detached. However, it also seemed to reflect both Evans's public persona and the cool directness of his artistic vision. Without any comparison, one could be forgiven for thinking of Rathbone's effort as the last word on Evans's life.
Then, along came Jerry L. Thompson, Evans's student, assistant, friend, keeper, and author of The Last Years of Walker Evans. In contrast to Rathbone's over-emphasis on the occasionally sordid details of the artist's private life, Thompson does much to humanize Evans without demeaning him or treading too heavily on the artist's grave. In fact, although it is not explicitly stated in the book, The Last Years of Walker Evans may be a direct response to the Rathbone biography. One can only wonder at whom the following passage, from the close of Thompson's book, is directed:
"...may (Evans) rest in peace-that is to say, unvexed by meddlesome studies that dwell on messy personal details and ignore the complex greatness of his work, and its central role in any! reasonable account of his life. And cursed be any whose inept, reductive, or mean-spirited scribblings disturb that well-earned rest."
But lest anyone fear that The Last Years of Walker Evans is a superficial panegyric, be assured that "dwell" is the key word in the previous quotation. Thompson does not dwell on Evans's personal flaws, but neither does he overlook them. In the tradition of Evans's straightforward photographs, Thompson merely presents information he feels is important in some way, then moves along. Oh, occasionally he betrays his formal education by over-intellectualizing Evans's work or artistic motivations, but such instances are infrequent and usually followed by his admission that postmodern, deconstructionist theories fail to account for either Evans's native gifts or the great impact of his art.
As Evans's student and personal (but not too personal) friend from 1971 until the artist's death in 1975, Thompson is uniquely qualified to write this insightful and touching account. As a photographer who accompanied Evans on his working excursions, printed Evans's work, and generally served as a willing tool in the service of Evans's creativity, Thompson is also an informed and thoughtful student of the artist's later work. These traits, combined with Thompson's crisp writing, brevity, and deeply-felt concern for Evans, make The Last Years of Walker Evans a must-have for anyone interested in the life and work of this tremendously influential artist.

Book Description
Gender constructions do not stop at state boundaries.
Global understandings of masculinity and femininity can emerge out of the matrix of international politics. Proposing an innovative conception of global politics by de-emphasizing state actors and instead analyzing competing transnational discourses, The Global Construction of Gender focuses specifically on people who work at home for pay. Prügl explores the debates and rhetoric surrounding home-based workers that have taken place in global movements and multilateral organizations since the early 1900s in order to trace changing conceptions of gender over the course of this century.
As Prügl relates, home-based workers, both urban and rural, engage in a broad array of activities: they "sew garments, embroider, make lace, roll cigarettes, weave carpets, peel shrimp, prepare food, polish plastic, process insurance claims, edit manuscripts, and assemble artificial flowers, umbrellas, and jewelry." These (mostly female) workers are widely recognized as underpaid and exploited. In investigating their plight, Prügl describes the rules that have separated home and work and, in the process, created a diverse array of distinctly gendered identities, including that of the working mother as a social problem, the wage-earning worker as a male breadwinner, the crafts-producing woman as the symbol of Third World nationhood, the woman micro-entrepreneur as the heroine of structural adjustment, and the new androgynous home-based consultant/freelancer/teleworker as the exemplary worker of a flexibly organized global economy.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent!!! .......2007-07-23
This is a very well researched and written book. Lots of rare photos that detail the rise and fall of the mighty Empire. I also recommend "Adventurous Empires: The Story of the Short Empire Flying Boats" which is a book with (unfortunately) a similar sad ending.
Great photos, but very poorly written and edited........1999-06-20
Any 314 or Pan Am fanatic will undoubtedly enjoy this book for its terrific photo coverage of the aircraft. But the writing is so poor that it is hard to discern what the author is trying to say most of the time, and the editing was non-existant. It is sheer torture trying to sit down and read the text, which is a shame because the author unquestionably was in possession of a significant amount of good research material. And typical of most Schiffer books, there was not even an attempt at editing the manuscript for typos, misplaced punctuation, or other errors.
Great history and great photos.......1999-04-18
As a Flight Engineer on the B314 for three years I shudder at the thought that future aviation buffs will take this as the "bible". I think the author was drunk when he wrote about crew duties and procedures!
Most comprehensive aircraft book ever........1999-01-24
This is the most comprehensive book on an aircraft I have ever seen. Unfortunatly the author kills himself with querky writing ( I agree with all the comments from the gentelman from Canberra) In the first half of the book there are many glaring technical errors. The author should have had a technical person edit this book!!!! Unfortunatly this book will remain in this form for many years. I would be happy to have a dicussion with the author on this magnificent but flawed book.
This is a beautiful book, let down by quirky writing style.......1998-12-17
This well presented book is supported by exhaustive research, together with extensive illustrations, mainly from the manufacturer of the wonderful Boeing 314 flying boats. The book is let down however, by numerous spelling errors and typographical mistakes. One example of many is the use of the word 'howser', when the author means 'hawser' in reference to the waterborne handling of the flying boats. The description of crew training and procedures is quite unrealistic and overly emphasised. For example, in talking about radio operators, he persists in saying they gained 'degrees' after studying various technical subjects - these were technical courses for which certificates would have been issued. More concerning is the rather quirky writing style, the meaning of which at times is hard to follow. The author persists in using hypenated expressions which strain the imagination of the reader. One example in the caption to a photograph showing the ladies' rest rooms is 'Female early-to-rise amenities to primp one's self for the Horta arrival were elegantly provided and well thought out when planning for sky-havened powder rooms'. His quoting of statistics (which is extensive), while of interest to the technical reader, would have far better been reserved for a tabular presentation in an appendix. The author has spent a lifetime collecting data on the Boeing 314 flying boat and it is unfortuneate that errors and lack of style editing, which should have been carried out by the publisher, detracts from the overall product. Notwithstanding this however, the book is a definative work on the subject and is worth buying by the flying boat enthusiast.

Book Description
German-speaking people have always lived, either as temporary or as long-term residents, in the British Isles. While the majority of the visitors arrived to pursue trade, others came for a wide variety of reasons. In the sixteenth century German reformers came to promote Protestantism. In 1714 the Elector of Hanover came because he had inherited the crown. In Victorian times Karl Marx came to write Das Kapital in the British Museum. The nineteenth century was perhaps the highpoint in the history of German settlement, with the establishment of widespread German communities and organisations. The First World War, and a combination of official and unofficial hostility, destroyed most of these communities. During the interwar years both Nazis and Jewish refugees from Nazism entered the country. Since the war, professionals have formed the basis of the German community. The present volume traces the history of German settlement through a series of essays designed to cover each period and to analyse specific aspects. Germans in Britain since 1500 represents a unique history of an immigrant grouping in Britain over almost 500 years.

Written in the language of a poet.......2006-01-26
Reviewed by Linda Benninghoff for Reader Views (1/06)
In "To Walk in Beauty" by Allen Benton, many plants or animals are not too insignificant to be purposeless, and beauty can be found in the least expected of places. This meditative book begins with the cycle of the seasons in a western New York State suburban area. Winter is the first season to be described. Quoting Robert Frost's poem "Reluctance," Benton observes the behavior of the oak tree during this cold season. "The leaves are still dead on the ground/Save those that the oak is keeping."
The oak, unlike other trees, does not give up all its leaves. Some remain "stubbornly attached to their stems, brown and withered during the dulling days of early winter." Then a storm may blow them down. During winter, many mammals are invisible except for their prints. One phenomenon that is interesting to study during this season is the ball gall on goldenrod, a round ball caused by the activity of a small picture-wing fly. Spindle galls, also found in a field of goldenrod, are elongated and oval in shape, and are caused by a small moth. These snatches of the extraordinary inside the ordinary fill the book.
Natural life may often have a purpose. This is apparent in many creatures, even the earthworm. "In fact our own lives depend upon not only the plants that transform solar energy into chemical energy, but upon a thin layer of soil whose fertility and structure are largely due the humble earthworm." Earthworms eat dirt, and when dirt passes through the worm's body, the dirt's fertility and structure are enhanced.
In "To Walk in Beauty," Benton makes some very interesting comments on the functions of living things that otherwise might go unnoticed, and he describes the biology behind the sights of each season. This way of looking at nature enhances the reader's perception of the beauty lurking in his or her own backyard.
The book initially tells of the four seasons, describes spiders, fleas, smells and birds' nests, but it is the author's reverence for life that permeates these pages and seems to organize the book. This reverence for life leads him to describe the passenger pigeon, which once may have numbered in the billions, but was easy to kill. Adult birds were considered good eating. Squabs provided little food value, but were massacred also, and served in some restaurants. The last surviving passenger pigeon, "a female named by her attendants "Martha" was found dead in a huge block of ice and sent to the Smithsonian Institution, where she can, I suppose, still be seen--a pathetic monument to human greed, ignorance and disregard of the creatures with whom we share this planet."
In the epilogue to this book, Benton warns of the dangers of overpopulation and pollution. "This beautiful world is deteriorating at an increasing rate. Extinction of species is at an all-time high, and many wonderful and possibly useful organisms will be gone before we even know they exist. I'd like to help people understand this and make them care."
This book may help him achieve his purpose, with its interweaving of the casual beauty found in a backyard and the rare beauty found in birds that he traveled as far as the Caribbean to sight. "To Walk in Beauty" is full of imagery and meaning, and its stories are told with the language of a poet.
