Excellent choice for beginner and intermediate artist!.......1998-06-18
Diana Constance, deals with drawing the human figure in a direct and concise way. I had use of this book while taking a course in college. It showed methods of drawing, with examples and was not another anthology of famous masterworks. I needed information on techniques and found this book to be a valuable resource.
Please, have the publisher place this book back in print!

The Last Folk Hero: A True Story of Race and Art, Power and Profit
ASIN: 080782397X
Release Date: 1998-04-01 |
Book Description
Why, beginning in the late 1960s, did expressive objects made by poor people come to be regarded as "twentieth-century folk art," increasingly sought after by the middle class and the wealthy? Julia Ardery explores that question through the life story of Kentucky woodcarver Edgar Tolson (1904-1984) and the evolving public reception of his poplar "dolls."
The Temptation presents a vivid chronicle of folk art's ascendancy in the late twentieth century, enlivened by the voices and opinions of diverse participants in the folk art scene. Drawing on in-depth interviews with collectors and dealers, museum and auction house officials, and Tolson's own family members and friends, the book traces a twenty-year tug-of-war over the definition, sale, and interpretation of folk art. Unlike earlier studies, Ardery's work also links the popularity of folk art to larger historical forces: the civil rights movement and the War on Poverty in Appalachia, government and corporate arts sponsorship, developments in arts education, and an expanded art market.
Well illustrated and impeccably documented, The Temptation offers an engaging account of how a generation both reflected and reinforced its ideals through its fascination with crayon drawings, quilts, and wooden dolls.

Essential Book for the Folk Art Library.......2002-05-28
Whether you are a fan of Edgar Tolson's work or of woodcarving in general, this is an essential book to have if you are interested in folk art of the 20th century. The thorough research done on Edgar Tolson is fascinating and through his art and career the world of 20th century folk art is examined. From key folk art collectors to various museums and institutions, the 20th century folk art movement was created and sold to the buying public. By the time the "important" artists were established all of the "important" early work was already in the hands of a few collectors and the museums. It's no accident that Tolson's work ended up in a prestigious Whitney Biennial and his artwork sky-rocketed in price. The same with Howard Finster. By the time his work was presented as being important to the general public, a narrow group of collectors and critics had already hoarded the first few thousand of his numbered pieces which the critics then deemed as the most important of his career. And the story continues to this day with collectors / critics buying early key works, then recommending them to the general folk art buyers. This book is perhaps the best analysis of why and how a folk artist becomes "important" in the 20th century. It may or may not sour your view on 20th century folk art but is a great read either way. As with all art or decorative objects, if you just buy what you like and ignore the critics, you'll be happy. Who's to say 10, 20 or 50 years from now if anyone will even care about "20th century folk art."
A granddaugther from Guam who loved Edgar Tolson & the book........1998-05-08
Ms. Julia S. Ardey has put together an extraordinary work -- filled with stories and pictures of a poor Kentucky man who whittled stuff to which other folks took a liking. My grandfather Edgar Tolson will always remain an elusive character both in life and in death hard to explain and to understand. As all great artists he was not one dimensional. Ms. Ardey did a fine job of grasping enough bits and pieces of his life, through the eyes and hearts of those who knew him, to give a reasonable representation of who Edgar Tolson was and why he whittled. Ms. Ardey interviewed scores of people and personalities who all have their own opinion of Edgar Tolson the Man and Edgar Tolson the Woodcarver and the times in which he lived. Ms. Ardey managed a remarkable feat in compling those interviews into an a very good work. She included many pictures that give insight into an artisan and his art. Many pictures capture Edgar's soul in his eyes -- others show a family life of just real folks who just have a Daddy that whittles in the living room and lets the shavings fall to floor. As a granddaugther of Edgar Tolson, beloved Kentucky woodcarver, I am very pleased with the work Julia S. Ardery managed to put together on his life and extraordinary talent. With a family as large as he had I am sure that this book will be debated into generations, however, it is a real good starting point at which to kick off the debate of fact or fiction. The papaw I knew was a wonderful minister; he loved his God, knew his bible and had a passion for sharing the Biblical Truths of his God with others through his work. He managed to reach the very far corners of the earth with his renditions of Adam & Eve in Garden of Eden, Their Fall, and Noah's Ark among a few--how many ministers can stake that claim. He carved what was upon his heart to carve. He was discovered by others who marketed it to a world who craved his carvings and what they represented to them. I am so pleased that Ms. Ardery managed to compile so much ! of his life and work into this book. It makes for really good reading and gives the reader the opportunity to linger with story and photo's of Edgar Tolson and his artwork long enough to gain an understanding of why so many are so drawn to it, him and living upon this earth. Thank you Ms. Ardery for a job well done.

not quite what I thought.......2003-05-10
This CD does a great job of what it tries to do.. show the balance and movement of the human figure in motion. It isn't quite as usefull as an aid to figure drawing as I thought it would be though. I suspect someone would have to be pretty seriously involved in animation or advanced painting to make effective use of this resource.

Description:
This study evaluates if verbally oriented scales are as effective as the visual instruments of self-figure drawing and video interpretation in detecting treatment responses after 6 months of dance/movement therapy in fibromyalgia patients. The self-figure drawing and video interpretation technique captured treatment effects that were not seen on verbal scales. In the self-figure drawings, significant differences were seen in the variables ''amount of body details'' and ''amount of paper use in percent'' between the treatment group and controls after dance/movement therapy. The treatment group showed a significant increase in the ''amount of body details'' and ''amount of paper use in percent'' compared to controls. Specific parts of the verbally oriented ratings in CPRS, ''bodily discomfort'' and ''compulsive act,'' were positively correlated to ''number of different colours.'' The variable ''pain and ache'' in the CPRS indicated a negative correlation to the ''amount of paper use in percent,'' i.e. the more pain, the less paper used. The use of different assessment techniques may affect the treatment outcome and verbal instrumentation may not be the most appropriate in this patient group. Difficulties perceiving information through verbal/cognitive modalities as well as alexithymia are factors that are discussed. d.

Why Male-ness need not be just for Gays.......2005-02-13
Of late, there has been considerable effort to monopolize male-ness and gender design in a covetous attempt to reflect only gay attitudes rather than focus upon the fact that while homosexuality exists, it is actually women for whom the male gender and appearance has most fascination. The refusal of women to be candid about that appreciation, or public, creates the presumption that only males enjoy the sight of males, and that females don't. This is a sad misconception that has been traditionally preached for far too long, and indeed, may help to contribute to the incidence of homosexual lifestyles. Surely, women in their silence had not expected to give up their preference for men to homosexuality due to society's female repression over expressing their interest in men or in sexuality. The one thing that God failed to imagine may be that women would (by mankind) not be permitted to be natural about sex, and hence, become obsolete, while the "field" becomes increasingly dominated by homosexuals, more interested and driven to express their own. Are women "losing out" to homosexuals?

Customer Reviews:
Exploring the art of magic in the Buffyverse.......2004-01-18
"The Magic Box" is a supplement for the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" roleplaying game that makes it clear that magic is powerful and available in serious measure only to the right person with the right knowledge (i.e., Willow), otherwise it is dangerous and unpredictable (i.e., early Willow). This volume by John Snead combines background from the show with more creative meanderings, along with quotes, stats, suggestions, and painted symbols for your game playing edification. However, even if you are more interested in the dearly departed television series than in playing a game (my hand is raised at this point), this is still a fun look at magic in the Buffyverse (through season six).
This book is broken down into six chapters and an appendix: (1) The Witchy World includes speculations on the history of the supernatural, specifics on magical organizations and their use, as well as a look at the latest and most potent mystical adversaries from the television series; (2) The Magical You reveals more details on the show's magical cast members, discussing new backgrounds, qualities and drawbacks. There is also a new group of archetypes and an update on a few magical favorites from the Original Cast; (3) The Art of the Arts presents the new game rules for magic such as power boosting, virtual magic, and varying side effects; (4) Magic, Light and Dark includes all the spells from the series that are fit to print; (5) Beyond Magic covers psychics and super-science, which are different from magic in the Buffyverse, but still need to be considered; and (6) Orphan Trouble is a ready-to-run "BtVS" roleplaying-game episode "in which the new kid on the block is far more naughty than nice." The Appendix includes a handy guide to potential spell elements and conversation notes for importing regular unisystem metaphysics to your games (and they say television and roleplaying-games are not educational).
The book is filled with those pithy quotations that made "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" a test of your pop culture knowledge, boxes containing additional information and supplemental charts and tables, and fiction sections or cut scenes that give you a sense of what sort of scenarios you can play out in these games. There are other supplemental volumes to the Corebook available, with the "Slayer's Handbook" for the heroes and "Monster Smackdown" for the villains. These books are filled with photographs and illustrations, with gorgeous production values, so that they will appeal to fans of the series whether they play the game or not. Final Note: Unlike the other volumes form Eden Studios "The Magic Box" is a trade paperback and not a hardback volume.

Book Description
This book is a commanding assessment of labour market theory across the social sciences. It provides a radically original critique of labour market theory, which draws constructively but critically on existing literature. The work:
* contributes to the debates on key issues in labour economics such as unemployment, gender, equal pay and the minimum theory
* illustrates the policy implications in empirical studies
* supplements existing orthodox labour market theory texts.
Customer Reviews:
Keynes 's GT is based on purely competitive microfoundations.......2005-05-18
Fine does a good job of examining the microfoundations analysis(of the labor market)of practically every existing school of economics.Fine covers the representative agent approach of the various neoclassical schools(New Classical,Real Business Cycle),various Keynesian and Neoclassical Keynesian approaches based on fixed price, quantity (or quality)constrained disequilibriums, the Neo Keynesian approaches based on intertemporal coordination failures, efficiency wage models,insider-outsider models, menu costs, imperfect information, asymmetric information,as well as institutionalist(problems of poverty, discrimination, lack of access to education) and Marxist(exploitation) approaches .The major omission in the book occurs in chapter 2 and its attempt to deal with the question of what Keynes meant. On pp.28-36,Fine offers a reappraisal of Keynes's General Theory that argues that Keynes's work has to be provided clearcut microeconomic foundations in rational agent maximizing behavior.Fine overlooks the fact that Keynes provided just such a foundation in chapters 20 and 21 of the GT based on the theory of purely competitive firms and industries. The major result of the GT is spelt out clearly by Keynes twice on pp.261-262.The condition for optimal macroscopic resource use is that the marginal propensity to spend on consumption and investment goods must equal 1.Keynes formally derives the following optimality condition linking together the commodity and labor markets in chapter 20 of the GT.He repeats this analysis in chapter 21 when he adds the money market. The condition is that w/p=mpl/(mpc+mpi),where mpl equals the marginal product of labor, mpc equals the marginal propensity to spend on consumption goods, and mpi equals the marginal propensity to spend on investment goods.Unless the mpc+mpi=1=mpc+mps(where the mps is the marginal propensity to save)it is impossible for labor ,in the aggregate,to cut its money wage in order to reduce the unemployment rate.Involuntary unemployment automatically exists. It is mathematically and economically impossible for any type of flexible (free market) policy of price and/or wage changes to move the economy to a full employment equilibrium in either the short run or the long run.

The Book's Suggestions Work....For Real!.......2007-07-04
When I put the advice in play, I heard, saw and felt the difference from my lady. I heard more sounds of pleasure from her. She literally begged me not to stop. [I never had a woman cuss at me during our lovemaking before! Quoting her: "Don't stop, damn it!" It shocked me and at the same time it was a turn on. That's an experience that is burned into my memory for the rest of my life.] She had more orgasms than before to the point where one could say that she almost turned the mattress into a waterbed. After we were spent, she made comments about how passionate we were, how many climaxes she attained and how it made her feel afterward. The book's suggestions gave both of us a good workout!
A must read for every woman.......2007-05-03
Great book, not only explain how a man can fully satisfy his partner, but also explain to every women how simple things can be very powerfull, and taking time to enjoy it instead of rushhhhhhhhhhh.... ok is done.. A must read for every woman and man... excellent.

This is really a great book for men. It teaches you some basic techniques that will make a big difference in the bedroom...or wherever. I hear the author also wrote a book about how to satisfy a man everytime but I don't see how that can be anymore than 1 page. ba boom ching
Women 101.......2007-01-10
Came within a week. Very educational and interesting. I recommend this to anyone interested in pleasing a woman the right way!
Good News for Lovers Who've Lost the Magic.......2006-11-08
For decades I have recommended the "How to Satisfy a Woman" book to men and women whose marriages are floundering and as a result it has made me a hero. The book saved many families. If mates were not close, they got closer. If they were considering divorce, they made a quick "U" turn and fell in love with one another again... joyfully!
The 'war between the sexes has been artificially created. It need not be. It came about as a result of men (and women) who have been physically altered as children with knives on the most sensitive parts of their bodies. Who can function well when he or she has lost a good deal of their erotic tissue? For more information on this important subject, see my book, "The Rape of Innocence : Female Genital Mutilation in the USA". It discusses both male and female surgical alteration in the USA.
I call the effect Hayden's book has, powerful. Yes, there's a goofy, 'apologetic' girl talk tone in it, but sex is not an easy subject to talk about -- it's scary for women to talk to men about their sexuality and i congratulate her for sharing her wisdom despite her obvious embarrassment.
In this age, when the majority of the men in our country have been circumcised and have lost the soft mucosal tissue, the prepuce, that allows them to naturally be in synch with a woman, it's invaluable to read this little book. It helps us all learn a different way of moving than the mechanical 'in and out' that chafes and apparently doesn't work for a lot of American women.
I talk with men daily who express grief due to having been sexually altered and the difficulties they have maintaining happy sexual relationships with women. So another book i recommend is "The Joy of Uncircumcising" by Jim Bigelow. The good news is, men can regain what they lost.
And the other good bit of news is that they can learn "How to Satisfy a Woman" even now. They can use what they have as if they have it all, even before they grow their skin back.
There's a reason why Europeans have a reputation for being great lovers -- they simply were not altered with knives -- they have, luckily for then, retained all their vital moving parts.

Not for sloppy, lazy, straight men.......2004-05-11
This book was hard to read. The book design is like something you'd see in Cosmo or Lucky, or maybe one of the style magazines for metrosexuals.
If they're really going after the type of guy that needs the answers in this book, they should have packaged it more like a sports magazine or a tool catalog.
I don't *think* this is a bad book, but it's hard to tell. On the few occasions that I've been able to find the part of the book that answers my question, it's been very helpful.
Brilliant.......2004-03-14
Okay, now how many homekeeping books have you read that made you laugh? The title the chapter headings, even the illustrations are all funny but this book isn't a joke. It spells about for even the most hapless reader everything you need to know to keep your home from becoming a nasty, cluttered nightmare. It's written for men but anybody can learn from it and I must say it's superior to many of the other organization/home management books that I've read.

Misleading title.......2007-09-07
Only about 5 or 10 pages of the book are about the liberation of the camp. Large portions of the military action are not even touched on. The first part is a general descripiton of the war situation and most of the book is interviews with internees about their time in the camp. No real time-line or story just disjointed personal accounts. Agonizing little about the soldiers, the fighting, the rescue, or the aftermath.
I have read just about every book on this subject as my Father was in the 1st Cav and participated in the liberation of Santo Tomas and in the later fight for Manila and this is my least favorite book. I guess it might be a slightly better book if it was titled, "Short Interviews with former Interns of Santo Tomas"
A Hero.......2004-06-14
Bob Holland and the members of the First Cavalry were true heroes. Without their brave efforts thousands of Allied civilians surely would have perished. Bob tells a compelling story of how the rescue was accomplished. This should be required reading for anyone interested in WWII.
An untold story our brave soldiers' heroism saved 4000 lives.......2004-06-05
This book is unique. It is written by a Marine who was there and took part in the rescue of 4000 American and Filipino civilians held prisoner by the Japanese from 1941-1945 on the island of Luzon.
The first half of the book details the operation itself--how the mission, which was extremely dangerous, was accomplished with a few Marines and members of the 1st Cavalry, US Army, under the direction of General Douglas McArthur
The second, perhaps most moving, half of the book contains personal stories and accounts of several of the internees themselves, who were interviewed by the author over a series of four years. The living conditions in the camp were atrocious, there was no food, and the tyranny of the Japanese captors unparalleled. The internees' vivid recollections of their rescue and the gratitude they expressed truly touch the heart
