Great Promise With Plenty of Problems.......2001-03-29

This book is a great resource for those interested in architecture in Los Angeles, but it has MAJOR problems. Not only are the maps inaccurate about 50% of the time (wrong intersection, wrong place along a street, or just plain wrong), but I have also found several listings for which the street address is wrong, including one for which the wrong street name is given. I have also searched for buildings only to realize that they have been demolished. While Los Angeles has gone through a lot of changes in the last few years, several of the buildings on question were demolished before this edition came out. So if you going to use this book to discover architecturally significant buildings, bring along a good map, a great sense of direction and allow plenty of time, you're going to need all of those to overcome the mistakes made by the authors.

this is a unique, one-of-a-kind guide to l.a. architecture, from the 20s (maybe earlier) to the 60s or 70s. pictures, addresses, etc. if anyone has a copy, i'll buy it. i can't find it anywhere and apparently, amazon won't do a search for it.

Walker Evans' radical photography of the 1930s demonstrated that unembellished photographic fact could serve as a highly poetic language. These works expanded the potential of the art of photography and at the same time defined a lasting iconography that recognized advertising, movies, and car culture as central images of modern American identity. Walker Evans & Company focuses on Evans as a central figure in the arts of the 1920s and 30s, and includes works in photography and other mediums that influenced Evans or were influenced by him, or which resonate in a significant way with aspects of his imagery, sensibility, and style. Photo Fine Art.......2007-05-21

Peter Galassi focuses on Evans as one of the great photographers of the twentieth century who also had a huge influence on many American photographers (and some contemporary graphic artists) and the ten visual chapters in this beautiful book provide a convincing case.

Photography as an art form has had a hard time proving it. Unlike fine art paintings, which exist as an entity, photography has mainly presented a visual record in many printed mediums (newspapers, magazines, advertising, packaging, posters) all seen by the public but not as art. Walker Evans helped to change that perception in America.

The first two chapters are interesting because Galassi features photographers who influenced Evans, especially Eugene Atget and his studies of Paris. The remaining eight each start with work by Evans then the chapter theme is carried on by other well-known photographers (and artists) who drew inspiration from the style and subject matter in his work. The hundred creative folk featured are a who's who of American photography since the 1940s.

Just over three hundred images are shown printed in an impressively fine screen (more than 250dpi) that brings out the wonderful detail in so many of them. Galassi contributes a fine introduction and each photographer get a comprehensive list of their photos in the back of the book. Overall I thought this was a fascinating survey American art photography whose origins clearly owe so much to Walker Evans.

All the Livelong Day.......2006-03-25

The essential argument underlying this book is that human beings want to work. We love work. Work is part of our nature. But human beings don't work with the unstoppable fervor of machines, so the people who dole out work have tried to compress us into the role of industrial robots.

Barbara Garson doesn't pretend to be impartial. She's outspokenly socialist, believing that the people who do jobs are best capable of judging how those jobs ought to be done. She is not looking for a free hand in the world, and she's not looking to loaf on the clock. But when work is stripped of its inherent meaning and reduced to trivial repetetive twists and pulls, this necessarily strips the workers of some of their noble humanity.

Garson began work on this book in the 1970s, and you can tell. Several of her interviewees think they're doing pretty well to be making a buck eighty-five an hour, because that's two dimes better than some of their friends. Her earliest interviewees are bulk industrial workers manufacturing light consumer goods, a field that barely exists in the U.S. these days. Her final interviewees crunch numbers on computers for banks and other institutions, and if anything their work is even more meaningless because they can't see their co-workers and have no idea if the next person on the line is even still alive.

There are a couple of chapters in this book where the author steps back from her interview subjects and draws conclusions. These chapters seem a little preachy, and will offend anybody who believes that the current employment system is the only way it could possibly be. This book is best when Garson stands out of the way of her subjects--cannery workers, auto plant techs, desk jockeys, and more--and trusts them to tell their own story.

If you've ever had a job so trivial that you wonder why you bother, you'll recognize that you're not alone. If you've always been on the top of the heap, you'll gain a broad understanding of what it's like for the people whose shoulders you're standing on. And either way, you're likely to understand why it's so important that workers link arms and stand together, what they lose when they work with blinders on, and what work could be if humanity were restored to its place of honor.

An eye opener for those who haven't alot of work experience.......1999-03-28

Garson has produced an interesting work which revolves around her research and interviews of workers engaged in some rather unusual but boring occupations.

UCLA's Michael S. Goldstein has written the definitive study of alternative health care. His superb book provides a fascinating description of the therapies now in use, and for that alone his book will reach a broad public. But his task is much more than description, and he offers an impressive analysis of why alternative health care is becoming such a major force in American life. Growing out of well-founded grievances with the dominant biomedical system of care, alternative health care offers 'age-old wisdom made new.' Goldstein has mastered a vast literature to generate a clear picture of the core beliefs and practices of alternative medicine and its relationship to religion, politics and the broader health care system. He concludes with an examination of a future that may include even more growth but also the risk of assimilation into mainstream health care. Anyone concerned about his or her own personal health or about the future of American health care must read this excellent book.

ENGAGING AND WELL DOCUMENTED.......2005-05-20

Martin Middlebrook's World War II books are very much alike - and that is to say engaging, well-written, balanced, and original work. This book is a little slow at times, but that reflects the swings of the Atlantic War, whether during a single convoy or an entire "campaign".

Middlebrook uses a lot of narratives that he copies and pastes into his books. These unfortunately substitute, to some extent, for good analysis and rigorous reviews of archives; and it is not certain that these recollections are accurate or representative. However, they add a great first-person perspective, help keep the story moving, and I do not doubt that they were selected as best as possible.

One fundamental problem I have with this book is that though it might have been the largest U-Boat engagement of the war, it was not necessarily decisive or critical. Indeed, it could be seen as just another day in the Atlantic War, but just a little larger. In this sense, Black May by Michael Gannon may be better in that it has a "thesis" or theme - the point at which the Battle of the Atlantic shifted to the Allied advantage. This "Black May" was sort of the El Alamein for U-Boats.

Similarly, Gannon's Operation Drumbeat book is a fascinating demonstration of American unpreparedness and poor tactics and resource allocation.

In conclusion, this is not *THE* U-boat book to read, but it is well done and is a good balance between a fixed period of time or single operation and the much less useful, broader, books about "the U-Boats in WWII" or something else similarly vague.
